Vince Russo/Kevin Nash (c)/Scott Steiner/Jeff Jarrett vs. Goldberg/Booker T/Sting/Brian Adams/Bryan Clark
Russo's Revenge: WarGames 2000 for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

WCW Monday Nitro - September 4, 2000

Oh fuck, this is going to be fun. And by fun, I mean in the same way cutting your own legs off with a rusty saw is fun. As in, not fun at all, and also painful. Russo's fuckin' Revenge. WarGames 2000. Russo has outright called his team "babyfaces" and his opponents "heels". He's made the opponents re-qualify for the WarGames (which Ernest "The Cat" Miller failed to do, being replaced by KroniK all of a sudden). It's allegedly a team match but it turns out to be for a singles title. Russo has insinuated that he'll take the title for himself and off Nash. His own teammate. Hey, it wouldn't be the first time in 2000. Let's try to make sense of this.

Also, gonna throw it out there: that isn't a WarGames double cage. It's the Ready to Rumble cage. It's so wild to hear a young Jeremy Borash in the booth. They raise the possibility that either Jarrett or Sting (the first entrants) could win the match despite no one else having entered. Very typical WCW match to start with, which means BRAWLING ON THE OUTSIDE BABY. And Sting tossing Jarrett into the cage. Sting grabs a ladder but Jarrett takes the edge momentarily. He gets tossed into the ladder. Next entrant is Scott Steiner, who's got a broken nose. Sting's dangling from the roof of Cage Number 1, and Jarrett and Steiner pinata the ladder into him. In comes a taller ladder. Sting's just getting beaten up, in a typical WarGames heat segment. Fuck, it feels so wrong to call this WarGames.

Out come KroniK. Both of them. In the meantime Steiner's rushing up the ladder to Cage Two, and then using bolt cutters to try and open the door out. He leaves Jarrett to the wolves, who give him High Times then follow Steiner up. Thus follows the sort of weird shitty wrestling that's typical for an unsteady floor. Reminds me of the Doomsday Cage match. Both of KroniK gorilla press Steiner and give him an awful gutbuster. Out comes Russo, in full hockey gear and accompanied by the FUCKING HARRIS BOYS because it can always get worse. The Harris' climb the cage and battle KroniK with hardcore plunder. Meanwhile, Sting's giving the Stinger Splash to Russo. Scorpion Deathlock, and for some reason, the non-wrestler does not tap.

Out comes... Kevin Nash?? Hasn't the order been broken now? We've had two members of the same team in a row. Or does KroniK's presence change the rules? Sting misses a Stinger Splash and eats Nash's chokeslam. Russo stands up with minimal selling, Nash threatens to chokeslam him but the other heels calm him down. Somehow the Harris boys and KroniK are in the crowd now. Schiavone thinks this means they're eliminated. Eliminated? In WarGames??? There's arguments between the heels, and out comes Booker T. Scissors kicks for everyone, Russo tries to attack but gets one too. Nash decapitates Booker with a big boot, Sting is at the heels' mercy, and Jeff Jarrett sets up the ladder.

The crowd chants for Goldberg... and they get him! Jarrett and Steiner both get decked, and then try to protect Russo. Russo whacks Goldberg in the back with a bat. Meanwhile, Booker is in cage number two and no one noticed. Goldberg has now been handcuffed to the ring. Up goes Steiner, followed by Sting. Nash is guarding the cage door, forgetting that you can just climb down the cage too. Jarrett's up there now, Booker is now making it to the Guitar Cage. He's got the belt, and has to come down with it.

Jarrett attacks Booker but gets a belt shot. Same with Steiner. Mark Madden realises someone should just pit the belt on so they don't have to fight and climb one-handed. Sting is handcuffed to the cage now. Steiner has the strap and Jarrett is attacking Booker. Steiner drops the belt to Russo, who celebrates... THE CAT comes out?? Cat gets the belt, thinks he can be World Champ... but is Jackknifed by Nash. Nash eats the Bret Killer from Goldberg, who attacks everyone including Russo. Of all people, BRET HART jumps the guardrail, smashes the door in Goldberg's face, Russo gets the belt... hands it to Nash and hugs him. IT WAS A SWERVE! ANOTHER POINTLESS SWERVE! Nash retains.

That wasn't WarGames. I really don't think it was even wrestling. Twists and turns for the sake of twists and turns, structure being completely abandoned, camera missing everything and making it impossible to keep track, the Harris brothers... So stupid. So fucking stupid.
I've seen that match as part of the WWE War Games DVD and I was like "what's going on?" Now the three-tiered cage was previously used back in 1989 for the Tower of Doom Match, which is also on the War Games DVD, only in Tower of Doom you start at the top and there are time periods in which the door opens for the wrestlers to get to the cage below in an attempt to escape. On paper sounds a lot worse than this. Though, at least with War Games 2000 the top tier of the cage wasn't literally in the lights like it was in 89.

Seth Rollins (c) vs. The Fiend
Hell in a Cell Match for the WWE Universal Championship

WWE Hell in a Cell - October 6, 2019

And so now we get to the year and a half of Bray Wyatt's career that produced most of his career lows. Strap RIGHT the fuck in, folks, it's time for the Fiend. Bray disappeared from TV for half a year and re-emerged with the Firefly Funhouse. A series of vignettes full of awesome lore that recast the Bray Wyatt character in a subverted kids' show... which led to the introduction of a clown demon! One who just wants you to let him in. Promising stuff, could be the dark side of Bray going for revenge against those who wronged him in his previous lameo storylines. But then... they made him care about the title. They made Seth Rollins (at the peak of his Unlikeable Top Babyface arc) scream like a little girl. Then came this match, in the Big Red Box. Let's get this shit over with.

Champ out first, and the crowd doesn't really seem to care outside of shouting BURN IT DOWN. But, I will say, it does feel refreshing to hear the words "Seth Rollins" without "Freakin'" in the middle. I've got to say, Fiend's entrances hit different than Bray Wyatt's ones, but not in a good way. The ambience of the fireflies is ruined by red light flashing. WWE's visual shorthand is that RED LIGHT = SPOOKY. And that red light is what this match will be bathed in, tonight... I strongly dislike this already.

Fiend's just chilling in the corner. There's something about the camera cuts early on that makes it feel clipped, even though it was live. "Yowie Wowie" chants. Seth's soon under the ring, scrambling for a kendo stick. Which Fiend no-sells, naturally. Seth hits a forearm (which does get sold) then goes off the top rope, straight into a uranage. Time for BRAWLING ON THE OUTSIDE: Cage Edition. Which, obviously, is mostly bashing against the cage wall. Fiend eventually gets a body avalanche against the Cell, before whipping Seth into the steps a couple of times. Fiend goes to retrieve a weapon, but Seth has now picked up the steps and bashes them against him.

"Seth's gonna have to go to dark places" says commentary as Seth picks up a table. If a table is dark territory, the Dudley Boyz had the darkest hearts in wrestling history. Seth goes for dives a couple of times, then sets up the table. He goes for a third dive, but Fiend catches him and hits Sister Abigail on the cage wall. Fiend tries to put Seth through the table, but Seth elbows out, superkicks Fiend on to the table, and hits him with a frog splash through it. No pin, though, because Seth has that RVD syndrome where he gets hurt by giving frog splashes.

Superkick, Curb Stomp... Fiend stands right up! Seth tries it again but Fiend catches him into Sister Abigail for a close two. Then he does those blows to the back of the neck, but since 2019 WWE production is so dogshit there's 5 cuts in 2 seconds, all with shaky cam. Between that and the red light, how can you even watch this shit? Then as if this match hadn't lost me enough, he does that lame NECK SNAP! That's not how snapping necks works! It's somehow even more lame than when Kon does it in 2024! Seth does that uncomfortable spasm sell until Fiend rolls him out.

Fiend digs under the ring for his GIANT NOVELTY MALLET! Commentary talks about the weight of that mallet, even considering that it's made out of hollow plastic (at best). Mallet thrust to the midsection, but Seth fights back with superkicks (I now realise why people bash the Young Bucks) and then a Curb Stomp on the mallet. Fiend gets back up though. He then no sells a springboard knee a couple of times. More superkicks! A third stomp and a fourth, and a fifth. Crowd's BURYING this display, and cheering the Fiend. Seth hits a low-elevation Pedigree, and a SIXTH Curb Stomp... Fiend kicks out at 1!

The stomp counter reaches 11. ELEVEN. Yes, that means we've just had five stomps in a row. Seth does his best "going to a dark place" face, and grabs a chair. "Yowie Wowie" chants are back, but quieter this time. The Fiend is prone, and could have been pinned 500 times over by this point. Seth swings the chair right down on to the Fiend's clown demon head... kick out at 1! He drives a ladder into a chair on the Fiend's face... kick out at 2! Seth gets a pile of kendo sticks, but isn't satisfied with that.

He gets a toolbox now. He drapes the ladder over the Fiend's face, puts the chair between the two halves, and smacks the big pile with the toolbox. It comes open, revealing it to be full of more tools than the WWE writers' room. Crowd is BURYING this EVEN HARDER. Seth now pulls out his ultimate weapon: the Triple H-style sledgehammer! The ref begs him not to do it. "This isn't you", says the ref. "You're going to kill this guy", he continues. "Please, Colby", he adds, and RIGHT FUCKING THERE it's now a WORKED SHOOT. A worked shoot featuring a MAGIC CLOWN DEMON. I think this is the stupidest fucking part of the match, and I know the finish!

Speaking of which, Seth (Colby) cries a bit, before using the sledgehammer. And the ref calls for the bell. That's right, it's a DQ. In HELL IN A FUCKING CELL. DQ IN THE CELL. And just like that, the entirety of WWE takes a flying leap over the shark.

Crowd is absolutely shitting on this, "Bullshit" chants right away. The Cell's quickly raised, EMTs are checking on the MAGIC CLOWN DEMON, while the refs are trying to hold off Colby because apparently this turned him evil? A few people are calling for the match to restart. Colby tries to attack Magic Clown Demon but gets a mandible claw for his troubles. Sister Abigail on the floor. Now EVERYONE wants the match to be restarted. Sister Abigail on exposed concrete. Fiend tries to attack some refs, then gives the claw to Colby again while he spits fake blood and sub-haunted-house stings play. Fade to black. Fiend jumpscare.

(What you don't hear, because the feed finishes before then, is "AEW" chants. That's right. A few matches have led WWE audiences to chant for TNA, but only one has led them to chant for AEW.)

This is everything that was wrong with late Vince WWE. Zero internal consistency, awful production choices, major matches that are just cynical finisher spam, and most of all, the writers have no idea what they're doing. Clown demon worked shoot. DQ in the Cell bullshit. I'd rather watch a million Bushwhackers vs. Sheik/Volkoff rematches than this. Horrific insult to the intelligence of everyone still bloody-minded enough to watch. Somehow, a WWE match has pissed me off more than Lawler/Cole did. More than Cena/Laurinaitis. Actually one of the worst ANYTHING that has happened in wrestling history.

That was the absolute low point. Pandemic exposed more issues but that Cell was some of the worst shit I've ever seen in wrestling

Bray Wyatt vs. The Miz
WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders, and Chairs - December 15, 2019

So, it continued at Crown Jewel, in what was by all accounts a mediocre but not terrible match. Which they had to sell as a "Falls Count Anywhere, Cannot Be Stopped For Any Reason" match just to be sure the fans knew they weren't getting cheated again. But yeah. Bray's the Universal Champion now. But you need a palate cleanser between Fiend fuckfests, and after a decent Survivor Series match with Daniel Bryan, they decided to let Funhouse Bray wrestle! Against unlikeable babyface Miz! I'm seeing a patterrn here. A DUD from Dave, a 2.87 from the Cagematch hivemind... let's see why.

Bray's out in a sweater, and fuck, that reminds me of how hot it is outside today. He strips the announce table and mounts it to show off his belt. He keeps playing to the crowd like a goof. He does hip swivels for Miz, but he gets shot from the waist up Elvis-style. Miz goes right in with rights and knees. Bray refuses to attack. Miz just keeps going in. Miz goes for the nose-hooking and ROPE CHOKING~ because what the fuck. He pulls the sweater over Bray's head and corners him again. Bray briefly gets offence by tossing Miz into the corner, but it comes to nothing, Miz hits cornered knees (like Elijah Burke, except white, and worse). Bray's expression changes, he starts going for Sister Abigail... Miz counters into a Skull-Crushing Finale. No cover, though.

Miz tries to wrench off Bray's arm, but Bray laughs and encourages him. He starts lurching around, smashing his own shoulder into the barricade. "Let him in" chants. Miz follows for BRAWLING ON THE OUTSIDE, WCW-style. Bray is ploughed into the German announce table. He then goes for a charge but Bray sidesteps to send him over the barricade. He lands in the spot where he got his concussion at Mania 27. It scarred me too. Miz tries to climb out, and Bray hits Sister Abigail on the floor. Crowd is dead. Miz beats the count of 10 but walks into another Sister Abigail to give the win to Bray.

The Fiend appears on the tron, so Bray gets out the comedy mallet. He's about to bonk Miz when the lights flicker... Daniel Bryan shows up! That wakes up the crowd. This is short beard, pre-pandemic Bryan, so that's very cool too. He hits his moves on Bray, and is about to use a mallet, lights out, Bray's gone. Anyway, this was absolutely not a match, just an angle. It goes with Benjamin/Maven. Remember that one? We were all so young.

Hot take: The match was good story/character-wise between him and the Miz. First proper match with Funhouse Bray so we got to see a unique dynamic. Just it didn't belong on PPV. Could have been a fine match on TV, under 8 minutes.

The Fiend (c) vs. Goldberg
for the WWE Universal Championship

WWE Super ShowDown - February 27, 2020

And so, we take our first visit to what, according to Cagematch, is the worst WWE show and the second worst wrestling "event" (not TV) of all time. Here's the top 10, if you're interested.
  1. Heroes of Wrestling
  2. WWE Super ShowDown 2020
  3. WWE Crown Jewel 2018
  4. UWF Blackjack Brawl
  5. WWE King of the Ring 1995
  6. TransGraps Presents Wrestle Queerdom (most people didn't watch and are only rating because of the mismanagement)
  7. WWECW December to Dismember
  8. JCW Legends and Icons (which I will get to)
  9. WWE Super ShowDown 2019
  10. Blackcraft: No Apologies
So yeah, in some pretty dire company there. The Fiend vs. Goldberg, huh? I wonder why this one is remembered?

I know I talk a lot about Undertaker's entrance lengths, but let's see how long Goldberg can drag this entrance out: 3 minutes, 7 seconds. (Also, the sheer size of this stage makes him look like Gillberg). Fiend's entrance length: 4 minutes, 1 second. Spoiler alert: those are both longer than the match.

Big staredown to start. It's like they think they're Rock/Hogan. Stop it. Fiend takes off his jacket, and Goldberg gets a spear, but Fiend kicks out at 1. Mandible claw by Fiend, but Goldberg gets him in the corner, and hits him with spear two. Then three. Then four. Fiend still won't stay down. He does the sit-up, puts the mandible claw on Goldberg, but he fights back up eventually. He fights out with headbutts and knees, and gets the Jackhammer for the win. The unbeatable magic clown demon has been beaten in a sub-3-minute match.

Okay so... what? Clearly this was meant to set up Goldberg/Roman, but why have the title on the Fiend in the first place? Whatever. This just makes the Fiend look like nothing (clearly Goldberg is better than everyone else, because HIS finisher spam can beat the Fiend!), and had no substance as a match. Fuck it all.

Would not surprise me. WWE was in full "script torn up the day of" mode at the time

“I'm a talent and I do what the boss tells me to do. I flew to Saudi Arabia knowing that I was gonna lose. Then somehow it changed and the finish was different. And it surely wasn't me. Because it's an extremely selfish move, number one, to do. Number two, then truly it wouldn't be about the business, it would be about myself. And number three, who the hell am I as a part-time guy to come in and demand anything?”

Found it

So don't blame Bill, blame Vince.

But also blame Bill a bit because the match still wasn't good and even if Fiend had won it wouldn't have been good.

Braun Strowman (c) vs. Bray Wyatt
for the WWE Universal Championship

WWE Money in the Bank - May 10, 2020

Then came... the pandemic. And as soon as he'd been out of the title picture, Funhouse Bray was shoved back into it by virtue of the current champ being Braun Strowman, with whom he had a ready-made storyline. They had 3 matches on PPV (PLE? did they call it PLE yet?), and not one of them was remembered as any good. Let's see the first. (For the record, because we're looking at MitB 2020: NO, the Corporate Ladder match(es) will not go in this thread. Because that was brilliant, and I'm tired of people who have deluded themselves into thinking it wasn't. Thankfully, it didn't get a rating from Meltzer, so I'm not forced to cover it like I will be things like the Gimmick Battle Royal. Anyway, here's another regular guy Bray match.)

Bray looks for a crowd to play to, but only sees ladders. He compliments the commentators. This is the heel?? Bray tries to appeal to Braun, who shoves him, and eventually downs him with his power. Bray laughs and says "you're strong". Oh yeah, this is the other thing about pandemic wrestling. You got DIALOGUE. It was oddly refreshing at the time, but now just feels stilted. Bray gets a headlock but Braun shakes it off and shoulderblocks him down again. BRAWLING ON THE OUTSIDE! You know the sort of thing I mean when I say that. Against the guardrail, the steel steps, the post. That's what I always mean by brawling on the outside.

Back in the ring, Braun hits a body avalanche and Bray rolls out, Braun goes for a charge but Bray, like the true matador he is, dodges and makes Braun plough into the announce table. Out comes fucking HUSKUS THE PIG BOY. No, not Joe Gacy, the actual puppet. Over the barricade, to encourage Bray. So the puppets are not only real, but sentient. This gives Bray the strength to do some Classic Bray Moves. Lariat for two, senton, and now it's Braun's turn to roll out. Bray comes in with a clubbing blow to the lower back and shoves Braun into the steps. Bray's crying, distressed that he actually had to hurt Braun, in a wrestling match. Rewatching this is honestly giving me difficulty reconciling Funhouse Bray with cult leader Bray. Are they still meant to be the same person?

Bray does his bend back, resists Braun's attempts to hit offence, hits an honest to goodness TORNADO DDT, and then Sister Abigail for a close two. Bray does his best indie shocked face. He goes edgy mode and teases a second Sister Abigail, but eats a chokeslam. Braun tosses Bray out again, goes for the charge, but lands this time. He rolls Bray back in, but Bray kicks to keep Braun out of the ring, Suddenly Braun pops up wearing the Black Sheep mask. Bray's so happy that they're back on the same page again, they do the pose together, and hug. Then the other fucking puppets show up, I swear to God, I am not hallucinating. Then Braun pushes Bray off, removes the mask... powerslam for the win. There's flashes of the Fiend in post-match... that's what happens next!

Anyway, this was a surreal "match" that I don't know what it was going for. I'm guessing it's postmodern.

Yep, "weird for the sake of weird" is how I can best describe this.

To answer the PLE question, I'm like 90% sure the term was referred to for a Day 1 PPV first and after crowds came back, maybe a Rumble tho but it was January one year

As you can see, something has changed! An entire set of 373 matches ranked was getting unwieldy and I was nitpicking it constantly. So, I did away with it. Now it's just the Bottom 20, and all of the rest listed by year.

There's also red marking for the matches that are just nasty for non-wrestling reasons (Ric Flair's Last Match, Yasukawa/Yoshiko, etc.), and the much rarer green marking for the matches that are considered bad by others, but I genuinely enjoyed them. Which means there's one more I had to import from the thread. So, you can consider as entry number 374... Bully Ray vs. Tommy Dreamer from Victory Road 2011. Some people (who don't understand fun) bashed this, but the sex doll spot. You can't argue with the sex doll spot!
