PAPUA New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has launched a bold plan for his country's inclusion in the NRL as they prepare for their World Cup opener against England in Townsville on October 25.

The Australian Rugby League received a letter from Somare that declared the government was willing to provide all levels of funding to ensure the nation joins the NRL in the future.

The letter has also invited NRL officials to travel to the country to open talks with the government about the prospect and to explore all the obstacles facing entry into the competition.

"In the letter the Prime Minister has invited people to Port Moresby to have initial talks," ARL chief executive Geoff Carr said.
"They're coming from a long way back. Stadiums aren't up to the standard of NRL clubs and these are all things that have to be looked at with the PNG government.

"It's not going to be an overnight campaign and at the end there are still no guarantees.

"But it's a rap on our game that a national government would be keen on exploring ways that its people can have (their) own team."

Serious communication is expected to begin between Somare and the NRL in the coming months and Carr said PNG could not be written off as a possible expansion area for the competition. He pointed at the success of the Gold Coast Titans, who joined the competition in 2007, as a blueprint for any PNG business model.

"Once the Gold Coast Chargers disintegrated a lot of people thought there would never be another team on the Gold Coast," Carr said.

"But they spent the best part of 10 years dotting all the I's, crossing all the T's and overcoming those hurdles.

"The challenges for New Guinea are the same as the Gold Coast, they have to have a credible national stadium and that's (the) obstacle the Gold Coast overcame, and they obviously need to have guaranteed financial backing.

Passion for league fires PNG bid

"There are a variety of conditions that would need to met, but the bottom line is they appear quite serious."

Australian players have experienced firsthand the passion the PNG people have for rugby league, the only country where it is their national sport, through the Prime Minister's XIII annual tour to the country.

"The population is fanatical about rugby league, they are great supporters of the game," Carr said.

"We go up there with the Prime Minister's XIII and the boys cannot get over how they are treated like gods up there."

And with the Kumuls set to play against the biggest nations (Australia, New Zealand and England in their pool) on Australian soil, two of those games in Townsville, Carr said the World Cup would be an ideal chance for them to showcase their skills.

"Their national team is competing in the World Cup and I guess as far as they're concerned the logical extension is to see a PNG team come into the national competition," he said.

"They've got the backing of the whole government. Not many sports in the world have their government apply to put a team in the competition.

"The PNG guys are in the tough pool so they get to showcase their talent and we know through our experience with the Prime Minister's XIII game that they are really, really tough players."

"There are obviously realistic hurdles (towards joining the NRL) but people should never say never."

The Kumuls arrived in Cairns this morning and will arrive in Townsville on Monday

My thoughts...

I wouldnt mind a PNG Side, but i don't know how would they deal with the friance of tripping there players to on road games... But i am up for it...

I personally think if they new sides here is some options:

QLD (west in the country region) - QLD crowd attandance are the best in the NRL atm, another new qld side would be good, but keep it a bit far from broncos/titans cause having it close to them could end up as South QLD crushers...

2nd NZ Side - New zealand are the 3rd best side in the rugby league in international level, A 2nd NZ side could make rival games with NZ warriors in which could draw big crowds...

a Side in South australian or N.T or W/A - these 3 options could be a new fresh idea.. IMO i think N.T or W/A could be the better option as i think South australia is a more AFL state...

But with all these options, they need to look at the money budget side to it and see if The NRL can afford another side or 2 in the near future (5-10 yrs)...

If the NRL are serious about expansion, the thoughts of a new team should fall directly to PNG. After that...

NSW-Coffs Harbour would seem a good destination, Central Coast would be another viable option

QLD-Another team in Brisbane is essential, definitely the second best location after PNG

Other States-Meh, I don't think a team would go over well in any of the other states

NZ-A second Kiwi team could be great if the popularity kicked up, games that invovled North vs South could draw huge.

I think that there are the perfect number of teams now but I am all for cutting a team (cronulla, souths) if it means a second team in NZ and/or Brisbane. I sadly dont see a PNG team happening unless they can take it slow and field a team for a lesser comp. If they jump straight to first grade then i dont see a PNG franchise lasting sadly..

how about one of the current sides move towards that area... I notice too many sides use sydney football stadium... (SFS hasnt been a good draw like it use to be years ago)..

the other states can be a good option to expand the sports more australian, as it's just QLD/NSW/VIC and NZ base... While the afl is QLD/WA/SA/NSW/VIC and afl is getting popular in Tasmania and N/T.. (but you need to afford it first...

X-power for your eels comments...

I felt Hindmarsh could of been in the side, he has played solid.. but there are 2 other forward i fell missed out is Chris heighinton (tigers), Alan tongue (raiders)..

I fell eels has a very shit year in 2008, i dont mind the side.. But for the roster of players they had they should of came atleast 6th...

---------------------------

side-note

Boyd and Hunt is in the side..

My thoughts: :smh aussies have 2 solid fullbacks already (slater, Gidley)

Boyd :smh he's decent

but Steven bell (manly) or anthony Quinn (storm) or preston campbell (titans) or Chris lawrance (tigers) could of been a better choice..

atleast with campbell he has experience in playing f/back, centre, 5/8, half/back and hooker.. Very ulitity just like Kurt gidley

^^Re-location would be better than adding teams in NSW imo, I should've put that in. I think one of the Sydney sides should move to Coffs or Central Coast, but the NRL wouldn't do it. PNG is ideal, they have the entire government will get behind them.

Please forgive me for this double post all ye mighty mods and admins.

Australia vs New Zealand, the World Cup kicks off this weekend! Some folks have tipped the Kiwis, but I have a feeling in my gut the Kangaroos will continue to dominate this sport. This will more than likely be the only match I watch, this tournament is destined to be a squash-fest. If the matches are shitty/squashes in the first/second week I probably won't bother tuning in until the finals.

So, thoughts on the World Cup and this upcoming kick-off game between Australia and NZ?

The actual tournament starts with England v PNG I think which should be a good match. Ill watch the tourny for the finals and the matches between the worse countries just to see who is the best of the losers. Australia will squash Lennie, i mean the sheepshaggers I mean New Zealand though

edit- Dipset still banned is he?

Lulz, I realised it wasn't the opener reading the paper just then, for some reason I assumed it was the kick-off game (which it should be by all rights).

I'm actually quite interested to see PNG, Fiji and the other island teams clash, they play an exciting brand of football no matter what code.

Yeah Aussie will pwn NZ this Sunday in what should be the best game of the whole World Cup, maybe these two teams in the final could be alright (if NZ beat England).

Yeah Dipests banned for a month just so you know and nice to see X-Power become another -HBK- :smh

There will never be another -HBK- :D. And technically, every Australian disses sheepshaggers. Lulz.

The 4 teams to make it to the Finals I hope will be Australia (of course), NZ, PNG and Samoa/Tonga/Fiji. England are queers and hopefully if PNG go well the NRL will realise if they want expansion a team in Port Moresby should be option number 1.

I would mark the fuck out if the 4 teams in the finals would be Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. That would kick ass. But then again, that wont happen so Australia ftw.

PS- My aunt married a New Zealander. And guess what- THEY DIVORCED!

Lmao, my mother is a New Zealander. But my father showed her the light and now she is an Aussie.

X, it's impossible for those teams to meet up in the finals. The 3 top teams in Pool 1 (NZ, Aus, England, PNG) make it to the Semi's and the top teams in Pool 2 and Pool 3 play off for a Semi-Final spot.

My dad lived in Aussie for a while so, HA! :shifty:

It will be Aussie and NZ in the finals without a doubt, England and someone will be the others...England suck penis but meh, it gives Aussie and NZ another team to kill

PS: We could probably spam this thread and no Mod would see because they don't come in here

BUMP

Shitty World Cup so far. The whole pooling system is screwed.

New Zealand play England 2 weeks in a row? That's bs.

Good to see Fiji in the semi-finals. (correct me if im wrong)

Australia will win.

Also, has anybody else heard the rumors of turning the tri nation into a 5 nations with France and the Combined Islander teams included. Also, they are making Samoa v Tonga an annual event now so that is pwnage. They should also make the rules for Test and origin matches stricter. Folau is a New South Waleser and Inglis is an abo. So, at least in the World Cup, they should play for thier country ofd birth. And lol at New Zealanders trying to get into origin. theyre not worthy.

State of Origin is entertaining because it's NSW vs QLD. NZ in there would fuck it up.

I've only watched about 2 games, awful world cup indeed. I'm going to watch the Australia vs NZ Grand Final, but that's about it.

Samoa vs Tonga was an awesome game, glad that's an annual thing. Folau is actually a Queenslander, and I don't know what Inglish being an abo has anything to do with it lol.
