Apparently a bunch of my friends became lawyers after this case, so ridiculous. I knew it was going to end up like this. I hate the whole story personally, and I don't think this should have gotten as much attention as it did.

I think it just says more about that "Stand your ground" law than it does anything else. If a guy is stalking another guy, getting advice from a 911 operator to not follow that guy and doesn't listen. And can still get away with shooting someone, it just doesn't compute.

Explain this to me, a Canadian who doesn't own a handgun, about having a concealed weapon and follwing someone you think is suspect. Isn't vigilantism itself against the law or something? Isn't Batman and Spiderman suppsed to arrested for that?

I didn't wanna jump into this thread because I'm not too informed about the case, but I'm confused by the ruling because this is basically my understanding of the situation.

Granted most of the sources I've seen were liberal but putting aside the race stuff and attacks on GZ's character and just looking at the evidence, I thought George was explicitly told by police not to follow the kid but went after him anyway. A couple of choice 911 calls I heard from other neighbors didn't really help his case. I don't get how he can claim self defense if he pretty much instigated the confrontation.

Since the jury found him not guilty there's obviously more to it, but I'm still not seeing it.

I agree with this for the most part, but to answer your question I believe the jury was looking more at the actual self defense (the bashing of the face on the sidewalk part) rather than the whole process of the event. Sad to hear but whatever, what done is done.

You know, I tend to agree with you when it comes to the case. The guy was getting his face smashed, but he was also stalking the dude, if I was in the same situation i would've beat the shit out of him too. Just sqaying.

News is basically wrestling now, black and white, cut and dry. Guessing they need some smarks to cover politics and news media tbh.

The media in America is pretty widely accepted to have a liberal bias with the exception of Fox News and CNN (imo, some might argue differently). I said so because they really did destroy George Zimmerman in the weeks following the shooting before any information was available; look no further than NBC editing the 911 tapes as proof of this.

A lot of people are talking about how he could get away with a not guilty verdict after the 911 operator told him to stay put and the fact is that you can't just convict the guy on any charge you see fit, not that there is a law against disobeying a 911 operator. The charge was second degree murder and later, manslaughter. That is all he can be convicted of. He can't be convicted of assault with a deadly weapon or first degree murder because he wasn't brought up on those charges. It's also worth mentioning that his gun was completely legal and because of Florida's stand your ground laws, he had no duty to retreat. Had he shot Martin in a state like New Jersey where the is a duty to retreat, he would've been arrested immediately because in that case you are to attempt to retreat at all costs, excluding your life of course. It's only once you are absolutely backed into a corner with your life on the line that you can pull out your weapon and use deadly force. Whether or not Zimmerman's life was ever actually on the line, we'll never know for sure, but if his account of the night is correct (which we kind of have to take or leave at this point), I think even in a state like NJ or any of the others without a stand your ground law, he might have had a case but at the same time, he would've been arrested on the stop and would've had to prove his case. The difference between Florida and a state without a stand your ground law is that in Florida they have to prove you weren't acting in self defense or at the very least, it's much easier to make your case, if there's no stand your ground law, you have to prove you were acting in self defense and it's tough to make a case.

What I truly think is bullshit is the DOJ trying to bring him up on federal charges. Are you serious? Have they heard of the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution? It protects us against double jeopardy. It's complete crap that they're trying to "fix" this situation now because they don't agree with the verdict. Leave that to a civil suit.

I wouldn't call them liberal at all. Thats a gross misclassification. I would however say that every news station from the ma and pa local station all the way up to CNN and Fox has an agenda and the news is secondary. But its not as clear cut as Fox and CNN against the rest of the world.

Prosecution went too hard by going for second degree murder, was always going to be difficult to prove when the only other witness is dead. I still believe that Zimmermann only has himself to blame for the situation he was in and he should be serving at least a few years in jail for killing an innocent. He reported it to the police and should have left it at that, no need to stalk the kid and get out of his car. In the end he will have to live with killing an innocent so hopefully it eats him up over the years.

In the end it shows how moronic the gun laws are in America. If he didn't have the gun on him then no-one would have been hurt. He would have called the police and left it at that. He wouldn't have had this false sense of security that he felt because he had a gun on him and he wouldn't have tried to be a hero. Would have left it for those that were trained to do it.

I have to admit, even though I've been a strong supporter of American gun laws and upholding the 2nd Amendment, this was definitely an incident that can make you change your stance on the matter. I have no doubt that Zimmerman at the very least intentionally put himself in a position where he could murder someone, make up any story he wanted, and people would believe it. And the fact he's "innocent until proven guilty" just took advantage of another structure of the American judicial system considering there weren't any witnesses to what really happened aside from the dead kid.

Even though I firmly believe Zimmerman's actions were unwarranted, I can't deny that he received the proper verdict in accordance to the country he lives in. And that's unfortunate.
