Which WM main events did they get wrong?

Here's a challenge: Have a think back to Wrestlemania past and the matches that main evented and then the other matches on the card that "headlined".

Which shows did WWE get wrong? Should Cena's first WWE Title victory been the main event of WM 21? Should Rock/Hogan have gone on after HHH/Y2J at 18?

I still think they should have had Flair vs Hogan instead of Flair/Savage. I think it would have sold more and we wouldn't have had to wait til Hogan was in WCW to see it what like 8 years later

Hogan/Austin at Wrestlemania X8, instead of what we actually got.

Rock/Hogan at Wrestlemania XIX. Wait a year and do it in Seattle. Forget about that crappy match they had at No Way Out a month before.

Undertaker/HBK in the main event of Wrestlemania 25, not in the middle of the card.

Those are really the only ones I can think of right now.

Given its star power and angle, Austin/Hart probably should have main evented 'Mania XIII, but Undertaker/Sid was also a logical choice so its not the worst call.

Anyone ever watch Wrestlemania II's main event? We had Hulk Hogan wrestling King Kong Bundy in a steel cage match. The match should have been Piper vs. Hogan since Piper was the possible the biggest heel in the WWF at the time. Instead, we had Piper losing to Mr. T, a movie star, in a boxing match, and Hulk Hogan beating Bundy in under ten minutes.

The Main Event of Wrestlemania 9 wasn't that great either. I know WWE was trying to establish Yokozuna as the top heel of the company but they really dropped the ball with this one. Not only did they have a man, who was three times bigger than his opponent cheat to win the title, but they had him lose it in under a minute in less than five minutes after winning the title. What WWE should have done was have Yokozuna win cleanly and then go on a monster run through the WWE... instead we get a 600LB Vagina cheating to win most of his matches.

Oh and Brock Lesnar vs. Goldberg should have been scrapped as soon as rumors about both leaving surfaced.

Well, WM 8 shouldve ended with Savage vs Flair, not Hogan vs Sid.

Yeah I agree with that. According to Flair's book, it was originally going to be Hogan vs. Flair at Wrestlemania 8 with Hogan regaining the WWF Championship. However, Hogan was more set on doing movies and other things at the time. The WWF lost out on what could have been the best fued of the early 1990s but Hogan pretty much killed it. The WWF were trying to push Sid as a megaheel (which is why he wrestled Hogan) at the time also, but he couldn't keep his ass out of trouble... The same could be said about his next WCW Run.

Hindsight being 20/20, Wrestlemania 1 should have been Hulk Hogan defending the World Title against Roddy Piper.

Wrestlemania 4 should have had a main event you could hype and advertise.

Wrestlemania 7 would have been better off with either Hogan vs Warrior or Warrior vs Savage in a career vs title match.

Wrestlemania 8's main event is pretty obvious.

Wrestlemania 9 would have benefited from Bret Hart vs Randy Savage as the main event.

Wrestlemania 11 should have been Bret Hart vs Diesel (Scrap the Royal Rumble bout) as they were legitimately the top two wrestlers in the company at that time.

I'm not too bothered by Wrestlemania 13 as there wasn't two obvious choices for the singles main event. At the time, the WWE had four equal top main eventers - Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Sid and Taker. Any combo would have been fine.

Wrestlemania 2000 should have been Rock vs Hunter.

WM 18 has a couple of possibilities. If you want Hunter to win the World Title, you go with Austin vs Hunter. If you want crowd reaction, you go for either Rock/Hogan or Austin/Hogan.

Wrestlemania 23 should have been Batista/Taker.

I suppose WM 25 should have been main evented by Michaels/Taker since Orton/Hunter died a painful death.

WM 27 should have been CM Punk defending the WWE Title against John Cena.

I'll do 16 onwards as that's when I started watching:

16 - Definitely should have been Rock/HHH.

18 - I appreciate WWE still followed their own rules by having the RR winner in the main event, but Hogan/Rock probably should have gone on last.

19 - No change, Rcck/Austin were both going soon and HHH/Booker wasn't main event worthy. With a lot of marketing for the show surrounding Vince/Hogan I guess that was a possibility but I'm glad it didn't. Besides, WWE were still serious about Brock at the time, so him having the big show ending
moment was more important long term (well, at the time).

20 - No change

21 - Obviously HHH/Batista worked out for the best as Cena/JBL sucked, but with Cena moving to Raw soon and becoming the face of the company, surely his big title win should have gone on last? Debatable.

22 - Right decision. Rey may have won the rumble, but the Smackdown main was very thrown together. Cena/HHH had the big match feel.

23 - The most debatable IMO. Taker won the rumble so his match with Batista had every claim to going on last, especially after they tore the house down. But Cena/HBK did have the better build, even if it wasn't the original plan.

24 - Edge/Taker didn't scream main event to me, but what other options were there? Floyd/Show had potential to suck (it didn't of course), the triple threat could have if Orton didn't win (and with HHH winning the belt a month later, why not do it here?). HBK/Flair maybe, but again match quality was up in the air beforehand.

25 - Hands down should have been HBK/Taker. It's the 25th anniversary, you've got the WM streak and the guy nicknamed "Mr. Wrestlemania", and it's in both men's home state. It's a marketing no brainer IMO.

26 - Fine with what we got, but wouldn't have minded Cena/Batista going on last.

27 - Ouch, I guess Cena/Miz was the right call of the matches on the show, but it probably was the wrong match to begin with.

28 - No debate here.

Pretty much any time Triple H has main evented a 'Mania was a mistake honestly, there were better matches on the card. Aside from WrestleMania XX of course.
