President-elect Donald J. Trump is expected to name Senator Marco Rubio of Florida as his secretary of state, three people familiar with his thinking said on Monday, as Mr. Trump moves rapidly to fill out his foreign policy and national security team.

Mr. Trump could still change his mind at the last minute, the people said, but appeared to have settled on Mr. Rubio, whom he also considered when choosing his running mate this year.

Mr. Rubio was elected to the Senate in 2010, and has staked out a position as a foreign policy hawk, taking hard lines on China and Iran in particular.

I don’t hate it.

He definitely would’ve been a better running mate than Vance too.

Also, I don’t think confederate statues should be torn down either, and I am fairly anti-confederate.
Why is that? Unless it's to put them in a museum to educate. I personally see no use for the confederate statues

I personally don't really get having a strong opinion either way lol and full disclosure I'm a white man from the south tho. But like, if people are adamant about removing them, I don't feel like it's worth fighting for at all. At the same time, I'm kinda of the proponent that once they're there, you rework it to teaching the history and it doesn't have to be honoring them, but explaining why people thought they should have been at the time. And everyone would be case by case, some people were much more heinous than others. It just felt like such a silly and distracting fight at times, but in general I'm more of a fan of owning up to the mistakes of history than removing them, in a way you should be left to feel shame if you've put up a big statue of a slave owner bc you thought they were right

I think it's important to consider the context that many of these confederate statues were erected, and that was to largely uphold post-Reconstruction racial superiority and Jim Crow society. They were not erected by the soldiers themselves, but primarily by the Daughters of the Confederacy, who, by no surprise, are a heavily active racist ratbag organization.

Most efforts to remove Confederate monuments are done locally, and through the proper channels, therefore it should be nobody's business what a local community decides to do within their purview as long as it doesn't infringe on people's rights.

In my opinion anyways, the only good Confederate monument is a monument to their defeat, or a stolen flag.

You hear that Virginia? Go fuck yourself, we're never giving you your asswipe flag back!

Yeah that's fair, I do think it's lost on a lot of people, even in the South that the Confederate worship really did not start until the 1910s. Prior to that it was pretty shunned, people did still hold attachment but they had to hide it more and it was more bitterness of losing than this hero worship and history rewriting that was done by them.

Funny enough how forgotten he daughters of liberty are to those same people that worshipped them too bc they did their job so well and everyone forgot about their role in bringing those conservative "heroes" back lol

Precisely, and it also didn't help that extremely popular movies like Birth of a Nation, Song of the South, and Gone With The Wind had... shall we say, more uh, romanticized views of Antebellum history.

Birth of the Nation was by far the biggest offender. At least Gone with Wind was more or less just civil war as a backdrop, that's a story you can honestly pick and plop into any war on history and it'll work.

Song of the South was just racial stereotypes lol absolute offensiveness

Birth of a Nation was so glorified even after it's message was shunned for being so technically proficient in terms of early cinema that it was recommended we watch it in a college class I took but the professor was like "I tried once, it was garbage" so we watched the movie the same guy made after which was a fucking 4 hour silent movie. He lived to torture people.

Oh man that sounds rough, but honestly, now you got me thinking what movies I'd recommend for a college class on cinematography, and I feel like at least three of those films would be a Sergio Leone flick :heston

I only took the first semester of this class so we stopped at like 1950 basically tho I think we cheesed it with a few films from the 50s bc they represented movements that started prior well, but the movies picked were great tbh, especially once we got to like...real ones in the 20s lol I mean it was like Caligari, Metropolis, wizard of Oz, great dictator, at least one more Chaplin but I forget which, maybe Modern Times but that's also my favorite so I've watched it more than any other too lol

Yeah off the top of my head, it'd be Metropolis, Caligari, Wizard of Oz, Great Dictator, Citizen Kane, Vertigo, Lawrence of Arabia, Good Bad & Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Godfather, Barry Lyndon, Once Upon a Time in America...

Discounting the ones after 1950, we also watched Citizen Kane and I think Vertigo? Again that's one I've seen a few times so I don't remember if it was also in that class or not lol any western stuff probably would have been in semester 2
