Minnesota Devastates Cardinals, 47-3

Bernard+Berrian+Bryant+McFadden+Minnesota+ug_XMC8JbBnl.jpg

(Bernard Berrian)

The Minnesota Vikings began the 2009 season looking to start off hot, and start off hot they did indeed do. Heading to Glendale, Arizona to face off against the Cardinals, they ended up not only dominating the game on offense, but forcing turnover after turnover on defense, intercepting QB Matt Lienart 4 times. The rookie quarterback from Army, Colby Arden, had a great debut in his limited performance, as he threw 12/16 for 198 yards and 2 TDs. The big story today was Adrian Peterson going wild, as he ran 41 times for 279 yards, 17 yards shy of the single game record he himself set two years ago against the San Diego Chargers. Peterson also hauled in three touchdowns, two on the ground and one in the air, to gain the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award. In the receiving game, it was all Bernard Berrian and Adrian Peterson, who caught 6 passes for 92 yards, and 4 passes for 91 yards respectively. Bobby Wade also caught a 14 yard pass for a touchdown from Arden.

Defensively, the Minnesota Vikings decimated the Arizona Cardinals and only allowed 3 total points from their offense. Chad Greenway had the lone sack on Matt Lienart, however, Lienart threw four interceptions, two in the red zone. Ben Leber hauled in two interceptions himself, and so did Antoine Winfield, but perhaps most impressive was Cedric Griffin's goal line interception that was hauled back for a 103 yard pick-6. On Special Teams, Chris Henry also forced a fumble on returner Steve Breaston. The kicking game was perfect as Josh Brown went 4/4 on Field Goal Attempts, the longest from 43 Yards. He was also 5/5 on Extra Points.

Passing:
Colby Arden - 12/16, 198 Yards, 2 TD

Rushing:
Adrian Peterson - 41, 279 Yards, 2 TDs, 1 FUM
Maurice Hicks - 4, 10 Yards
Thomas Tapeh - 1, 5 Yards
Chester Taylor - 6, 5 Yards

Receiving:
Bernard Berrian - 6, 92 Yards
Adrian Peterson - 4, 91 Yards, 1 TD
Bobby Wade - 1, 14 Yards, 1 TD

Defense:
Chad Greenway - 1 Sack
Ben Leber - 2 INT
Cedric Griffin - 1 INT, 103 Yards, 1 TD
Antoine Winfield - 11 Tackles, 1 INT
Chris Henry - 1 FF

Regular Season Week 2

Vikings Slip Past Eagles 21-26

84208757.jpg.0.jpg

(Cedric Griffin Intercepting A Pass)

The Minnesota Vikings returned home to the Metrodome following their Week 1 smashing of the Arizona Cardinals and followed it up with a thriller of a game against Donovan McNabb and the Philadelphia Eagles. A slow start and a Colby Arden interception put Minnesota down 14-10 with 4 minutes left in the half. Minnesota drove down the field and Josh Brown smashed a 58-yard field goal (tied for longest of his career) through the uprights to put Minnesota down by one, 14-13. An opportune interception by Antoine Winfield then allowed Minnesota to drive down the field and for Adrian Peterson to rush for a touchdown, putting Minnesota up 14-20. Minnesota then dominated the game on time of possession and on defense to eak past Philadelphia with a final score of 21-26.

On offense, Colby Arden went 16/27 for 231 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Adrian Peterson touched the ball 39 times for 72 yards, and thanks to the Full House (three running back) set, Minnesota's rushing game went over 100 yards for the second week in a row. Bernard Berrian caught four passes for 44 yards; Jermichael Finley also had a very good receiving game, catching 3 passes for 43 yards. Bobby Wade caught the lone touchdown of the game and had the most yards of anyone, as he caught 3 passes for 58 yards, and the lone touchdown.

On Defense, the Minnesota Vikings were as dominant as they were last week, intercepting Donovan McNabb four times and sacking him once. Antoine Winfield had two key interceptions on McNabb, and Doss and Griffin also intercepted McNabb once a piece. EJ Henderson was all over the field as he had 10 total tackles; Pat Williams also got the lone sack on McNabb as well.

In the kicking game, Josh Brown was 4/7 on Field Goal Attempts, the longest from 58 yards. He missed three field goals, two to the right, and one hitting the uprights. He was 2/2 on extra points, however.

Minnesota moves to 2-0 for the first time since 2006.

Passing:
Colby Arden - 16/27, 231 Yards, 1 TD / 1 INT

Rushing:
Adrian Peterson - 39, 72 Yards, 1 TD
Chester Taylor - 7, 21 Yards
Thomas Tapeh - 5, 20 Yards
Maurice Hicks - 1, 5 Yards

Receiving:
Bernard Berrian - 4, 44 Yards
Jermichael Finley - 3, 43 Yards
Bobby Wade - 3, 58 Yards, 1 TD
Sidney Rice - 3, 42 Yards

Defense:
Pat Williams - 1 Sack
Antoine Winfield - 2 INTs
Mike Doss - 1 INT
Cedric Griffin - 1 INT
EJ Henderson - 10 Tackles

It was a big back and forth battle with Minnesota mostly running it, so it's no surprise there was 7 field goals.

Regular Season Week 3

Minnesota Whoops Pittsburgh, 37-10

eb714ffb2a4faac7cabf9e48a7732852.jpg

(Adrian Peterson Running Over A Defender)
After a close game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Minnesota Vikings travel back to Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, which they visited in Preseason. Going up against the Steelers, this time, the Minnesota Vikings decimated the air attack for the Pittsburgh Steelers and intercepted Ben Roethlisberger four times and recovered a Steelers fumble once to force five turnovers en route to a crushing 37-10 victory. Colby Arden, the #1 Overall Draft Pick had another decent game as he threw 15/24 for 195 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. On the ground Adrian Peterson was handed the ball 36 times for 87 yards, but 2 fumbles. Chester Taylor also ran three times for 48 yards and a touchdown. Bernard Berrian only hauled in three receptions, but led the corps in yards with 81, and the lone Colby Arden touchdown.

Defensively, the Pittsburgh Steelers had no answer on offense against the Minnesota Vikings as Ray Edwards sacked "Big Ben" 3 times, and Antoine Winfield intercepted Ben three times, marking him as Minnesota's player of the game. Mike Doss also hauled in an interception on the Steelers Quarterback. Perhaps the most interesting play of the entire game was at the Steelers 5-yard line; a standard hand-off rush attempt by Willie Parker ended in disaster as Jared Allen broke through the Offensive Line and smacked Parker, jostling the ball loose. The fumble went all the way into the end-zone, and Ben Roethlisberger and EJ Henderson fought for possession of the ball, which Henderson won, resulting in a Vikings touchdown.

Minnesota moves to their first 3-0 start since 2003, in which they started 5-0, but ended 9-7 and missing the playoffs thanks to a last second Josh McCown to Nate Poole touchdown.

Passing:
Colby Arden - 15/24, 195 Yards, 1 TD / 1 INT

Regular Season Week 4

Vikings fall to Rams 27-33

20091016__kevinWilliams.jpg

The Minnesota Vikings turned the ball over a dizzying 4 times in a heartwrenching loss to the St. Louis Rams. Colby Arden threw the ball a staggering 52 times and only managed 29 completions for 376 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions; Adrian Peterson ran the ball only 27 times for 63 yards and a lone touchdown. The big hero for Minnesota was Bernard Berrian, who caught 8 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown, a yards/reception rate of 25.75 yards.

Defensively, Ben Leber hauled in the lone interception on Marc Bulger, as the rest of the team slowly fell prey to the offense that appeared in last year's NFC Championship. EJ Henderson and Chad Greenway each went over 10 tackles in the game and kept the game close for Minnesota right until the end.

Minnesota moves to 3-1, still holding onto 1st place in the NFC North against the Packers and Bears, whom are also 3-1.

Passing:
Colby Arden - 26/52, 376 Yards, 2 TDs, 3 INT
Chris Kluwe - 0/1, 1 INT

Rushing:
Adrian Peterson - 27, 63 Yards, 1 TD

Receiving:
Bernard Berrian - 8, 206 Yards, 1 TD
Bobby Wade - 7, 56 Yards
Sidney Rice - 5, 66 Yards, 1 TD

Defense:
Ben Leber - 1 INT
EJ Henderson - 12 Tackles
Chad Greenway - 11 Tackles

Regular Season Week 5
Vikings Dominate Bengals 37-6

Cincinnati+Bengals+v+Minnesota+Vikings+2mNnev1eKGcx.jpg

The Minnesota Vikings looked to bounce back from their humiliating loss to the Rams and they recovered by quickly stomping the Cincinnati Bengals 37-6. At Paul Brown Stadium on a lovely Sunday afternoon, the Vikings and Colby Arden threw only 13 times for 9 completions, 246 yards, and three touchdowns. For many analysts, they are arguing that Arden's rookie woes are over as he continues to show despite mistakes he is a superstar in the making. Adrian Peterson took the ball 40 times today for 161 yards, and Sidney Rice commanded the air attack by hauling in two catches for 158 yards and 2 TDs.

Defensively the Vikings snuffed out the Bengals offensive and intercepted Carson Palmer 3 times, one of them being returned for a touchdown by Chad Greenway. Josh Brown had a perfect day today as well, going 3/3 on Field Goals and 4/4 on Extra Points, his longest kick from 47 yards out.

The Vikings move to 4-1 convincingly and look to face long time rivals Chicago Bears at the Metrodome next week.

Passing:
Colby Arden - 9/13, 246 Yards, 3 TDs

Rushing:
Adrian Peterson - 40, 161 Yards

Receiving:
Sidney Rice - 2, 158 Yards, 2 TDs
Jerramy Stevens - 3, 35 Yards, 1 TD
Bernard Berrian - 2, 31 Yards

Defense:
Ray Edwards - 1 Sack
Chad Greenway - 1 Sack, 1 INT
Cedric Griffin - 1 INT, 30 Yards, 1 TD
Antoine Winfield - 1 INT

Kicking:
Josh Brown - 3/3 FGA, 47 Long, 4/4 XPA
