SUPER BOWL BOUND! Vikings Win Late Against Seahawks 28-24 The Minnesota Vikings are returning to their sixth Super Bowl in franchise history and second consecutive after shocking the world by defeating the Eli Manning-led Seattle Seahawks 28-24. Down 24-34 late in the third quarter, the Vikings began their comeback drive by scoring a touchdown off a huge 75-yard touchdown from Alex Smith to Nate Burleson. Smith scored the two-point conversion to put it within 2 points for Minnesota. A complete shut-down by the Seahawks offense courtesy of the Minnesota defense allowed the Vikings to drive down the field and allow Josh Brown to kick the deciding field goals in the fourth quarter. Alex Smith threw 17/33 for 224 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Alex Smith also ran for a two-point conversion on a QB Sneak. The running-back corps had themselves an excellent day between Maurice Hicks and Kolby Smith, who each went over 100 yards. Hicks ran 13 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns, while Kolby Smith carried the ball most (26 times) for 100 yards. Chester Taylor also returned to play for Minnesota, rushing 14 times for 58 yards and a touchdown before coming out to a major injury. Thomas Tapeh was also taken out with a major injury. Nate Burleson garnered big-time plays against his former team hauling in 7 passes for 157 yards and Alex Smith's lone passing touchdown. Defensively, Eli Manning took care of the ball and threw no interceptions to the vaunted Vikings defense, but Kevin Williams hunted Manning with a voracious appetite, sacking him four times. Jared Allen and Chad Greenway each had two sacks as well on Manning. Terence Newman also surprised everyone by forcing 2 fumbles; EJ Henderson forced and recovered a fumble as well. Josh Brown was again perfect when called upon, going 3/3 on field goals and kicking his longest from 43 yards. With this, the Minnesota Vikings return to the Super Bowl to attempt to garner a repeat Super Bowl victory. Vikings head coach Brian Billick is also undefeated at the Super Bowl (2-0), winning in 2000 with the Baltimore Ravens previously. The Vikings will face fierce competition in the Bill Belichick-coached New England Patriots, who in the last decade have won three Super Bowls in four appearances. The Vikings are 1-4 at the Super Bowl, while the Patriots are 3-3. |
