Vikings Defeat Rams 13-31, Advance to Divisional Round

jerry-holt-st-louis-mo-8142010-1st-period-action-vikings-v-rams-pre-picture-id1155705652

The Minnesota Vikings, despite being down starting quarterback Colby Arden and Offensive Player of the Year Adrian Peterson, defeated the St. Louis Rams in dominating fashion this Saturday evening with a score of 13-31. Alex Smith had himself a heck of a game, going 19/27 for 214 yards and three touchdowns, not throwing a single interception nor fumbling. Kolby Smith, recently signed off of free agency, rushed 29 times and was a yard shy of a 100-yard game. Bernard Berrian, Sidney Rice, and Jamie Renick each caught one of Smith's passes.

Defensively, the Vikings sacked Marc Bulger 6 times and intercepted him once, stopping the Rams from scoring throughout most of the game. Rookie Cedric Wall had a sack and a Forced Fumble to his stat-book as he continues to impress the Vikings coaching staff. Josh Brown went 3/4 on field goals today, his longest from 37.

The Vikings move onto the Divisional Round where they will face off against the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome. Vikings head coach Brian Billick states that he is confident in his team's ability to stop Drew Brees and company on their home turf.

WHO DAT? SKOL DAT!
Vikings Dominate Saints 42-17
NFC Championship Bound

96226544_original.jpg

The Minnesota Vikings came into the New Orleans Superdome with a purpose, and that was to win against the 2-seed Saints. After a sluggish first half, the offense came out swinging in the second half to score 29 unanswered points. Alex Smith showed a massive flash of the 1st Round Draft Pick he was in 2005 by throwing 20/35 for 366 yards, a touchdown; he did throw a back-breaking first-half interception that ended up not mattering. Smith also ran for a touchdown in the third quarter, and in one of the weirdest plays seen in NFL history, fumbled forward to Bernard Berrian, who picked it up for a first down. Maurice Hicks broke out against the Saints' defense, rushing 28 times for 174 yards and two touchdowns, thus proving the mantra coined by Brian Billick, "No Peterson, No Problem". Bernard Berrian had a career game, hauling in 8 of Alex Smith's passes for 216 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Drew Brees threw and Reggie Bush ran all over the defense in the first half, but things became difficult for them in the second half, as Brees was sacked six times and intercepted twice, all in the second half. Terence Newman and Charles Woodson each were responsible for the Brees interceptions. Josh Brown was also perfect today at a time when he needed to be, kicking 5/5 with the longest from 44 yards out.

Head coach Brian Billick expressed his confidence in this team, "I keep telling these guys week after week, they have the talent to win, they just need to remain focused. Tonight they showed that we're still in this." The Vikings move on to their second consecutive NFC Championship against the heavily-favored Seattle Seahawks at Seattle.

So fun fact, I didn't realize it, but I broke the single-season record for most total offensive yards with 8,621 yards...

for reference, the real record is the 2016 Saints with 6,816.
