Madden NFL 09
Minnesota Vikings
Franchise Mode

January 3rd, 2008

???: It’s a pleasure doing business, Mr. McCombs. We just have to get it through Mr. Goodell and the other owners, and the transfer of ownership should be finalized.

Red: Hey, it’s your franchise as far as I’m concerned. I couldn’t get a new stadium, I don’t see those damned government officials granting you one. I was gonna move the team, to be honest.

???: That won’t be necessary, Mr. McCombs. I intend to keep the team here in Minnesota and getting that new stadium, one way or another.

Red: Good luck with that. I’ll have one of my guys fax the details to the league office and to the owners and we’ll see what happens.

???: That’s no problem, I have plenty of time to let the league do their thing; between you and me, who were the other interested parties?

Red: Hah, you really want to know? Well the Pohlads were interested, they own the Twins of course, but they were gonna throw some big money for the Vikes. Other than them, there were these brothers… uh, what’s their name again…? Wilf? Zygi and Mark Wilf- yeah, that’s right. They were offering quite a sum too, but then you came along and offered more.

???: Sounds like a couple of characters, heh. Alright, I’ll catch you later, I hope you have continued success in your business endeavors.

Red: Same to you, hope you get that team a Super Bowl… those folks in Minnesota truly deserve one at some point…

???: Hah… hah…

RED MCCOMBS TO SELL

Red McCombs in 1998

T
he Minnesota Vikings are officially getting sold for the second time in ten years. Red McCombs, soon to be former owner of the Minnesota Vikings, purchased the team in 1998 for a scant $250 million dollars. During his ten years as owner of the Minnesota Vikings, the team saw incredible highs and horrible lows: going 15-1 in 1998 but missing the Super Bowl in an overtime thriller NFC Championship, losing to the Giants 48-0 in the 2001 NFC Championship, and missing the playoffs three years in a row from 2005 to this past season. Citing his frustration with the team dynamic and the failure to secure a new stadium for his team, Red McCombs plans to bid farewell to the Vikings for a reported $860 Million dollars from a mystery businessman. Reports have been inconclusive in identifying the soon-to-be new owner of the Vikings. Red McCombs in a press conference yesterday refused to name names of the new owner, saying that “in due time, he’ll let you guys know who he is”. McCombs was close to selling the team in 2005 to the Wilf brothers, but the deal fell through at the last minute when neither could come to a financial agreement. The owners of the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell have reportedly voted in favor of the change in ownership, which will reportedly go into effect on February 2nd, the day after the Super Bowl. Blockbuster Trade

Allen to Minnesota for King's Ransom of Picks

Jared Allen is no longer a Kansas City Chief. The Minnesota Vikings have given a sum of picks for the 2007 All-Pro Defensive End out of Idaho State. Allen, 26 years old and entering his fourth year in the NFL, led the league in sacks last season with 15.5 sack on the year. Minnesota has given Kansas City their 2018 1st Round Draft Pick, two 3rd Round Draft Pick, as well as swapping their respective 6th Round Draft spots in order to procure the services of Allen. The addition of Jared Allen looks to add a much needed pass-rushing edge to the Vikings defense.

FRAN TARKENTON HIRED AS
OWNER REPRESENTATIVE

tarkenton-fran-6.jpg

Tarkenton circa 1973

Fran Tarkenton has signed with the team he led to three Super Bowls, but not as a player. Today, The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly contracted the 1975 NFL MVP Quarterback for an executive role as the Public Relations Representative for the new Vikings owner; the new owner, who's name has yet to be released to the public, purchased the team in February from Red McCombs for $860 Million. In a press conference, Tarkenton stated that he has met the new owner, who is "an extremely private man". Detailing his new job, Fran stated, "My job is to relay information to the general public from both the owner and the front office. All questions entailing the owner will be answered by myself with his permission and blessing."

TRADED
MATT BIRK AND KENECHI UDEZE TO CINCINNATI

Matt Birk

V
ikings Pro Bowl Center Matt Birk has been traded to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Vikings reached out to the Bengals during Training Camp and initiated a trade to switch their respective Centers; Birk, 32, was hit completely by surprise, and so was Defensive End Kenechi Udeze, who was also part of the trade. Minnesota's new Center, 27 year old Eric Ghiaciuc [GUY-check] will report to Mankato for Training Camp on Monday. He is currently on a 1-year deal; according to inside sources, the Vikings will be negotiating a new contract for Ghiaciuc for the foreseeable future.

MINNESOTA TO BRING BACK
DAUNTE CULPEPPER

lead2.jpg

Culpepper in 2004

Daunte Culpepper will be making his triumphant return to Minnesota. The former Viking, Dolphin, and Raider has been re-signed to the Vikings on a 1-year, $1.80 Million deal, including a $300K signing bonus. According to reports, the reasoning behind signing Culpepper was an inherent disappointment in how Tavaris Jackson performed under center last season. Jackson threw for 1,911 yards, nine touchdowns and twelve interceptions in his 12 games as starter. Daunte Culpepper had a nigh-MVP season in 2004 for the Vikings, throwing for 4,717 yards, 39 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. In 2005, Culpepper suffered an extreme season-ending injury to his ACL, MCL, and PCL. He was let go from the Vikings the following season. This return marks a hopeful comeback for the 31-year old, who was drafted in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. Reports state that it is possible he could be the starter in the preseason games.

Vikings Sign WR Chris Henry

29henry-a-popup.jpg

Henry as a Bengal in 2007

The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly signed free agent Wide Receiver Chris Henry. Henry, formerly of the Bengals, was said to have been excited to play for the Purple and Gold, and signed for a 3 Year, $11.4 Million and a $1.92 Million signing bonus. Henry, a third round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, was let go from the Bengals after multiple incidents with the law. In the 2007 season, Henry had 21 receptions, 343 yards, and two touchdowns through eight games. According to Vikings Owner PR Representative Fran Tarkenton, "The owner and front office felt he can be a great player if he keeps his nose clean. We at Minnesota are willing to give him all the help he needs and the environment to succeed. The impetus is on him to become a model player..." in a presser yesterday. In April, Michael Irvin, a former West Virginia teammate of Henry, encouraged him to clean up his act for the betterment of himself and his team.

Vikings Release Bollinger, Ferguson

Bollinger passing vs. Eagles, October 28, 2007

The Minnesota Vikings have waived Quarterback Brooks Bollinger and Wide Receiver Robert Ferguson today. The news comes after the major signings of Daunte Culpepper and Chris Henry. Bollinger played a short stint for the Vikings in 2006 and 2007. Ferguson had 32 receptions for 391 yards and a single touchdown through fifteen games last season.

Jim Kleinsasser Traded to Jacksonville for Draft Pick

Kleinsasser in 2000

Minnesota Vikings Tight End stalwart Jim Kleinsasser has been traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2009 5th Round Draft Pick. Kleinsasser, who has played for the Vikings since being drafted in the 2nd round of the 1999 draft, had a mere four receptions for 43 yards and a single touchdown. The 31 year old was on the trade block since last season. The Jaguars look for his veteran experience to guide their fellow Tight End Mercedes Lewis further into development. The Jaguars are currently predicted to go 4-12 in the 2008 season.

Vikings Re-Sign Safety Mike Doss

5405ca1a57179.image.jpg

Doss in Training Camp in 2007

The Minnesota Vikings bring back Mike Doss from free agency after releasing him after the 2007 season, according to a new report. Doss played through eight games in 2007, but had no interceptions and a mere 6 tackles. According to Fran Tarkenton, Vikings PR Representative, in a presser today "We're looking to see if we can continue to develop Doss more, he's a great talent, got good instincts, just needs more work on his finesse. He's twenty-seven, so we're poised to have him replace [Darren] Sharper if he chooses to leave or retire after this season." Doss previously played for the Indianapolis Colts from 2003 to 2006. The reported deal is a 3 Year, $4.89 Million, $630K

Defensive Tackle Ethan Kelley Signed by the Vikings

The Vikings have signed former New England Patriot and Cleveland Brown Ethan Kelley to a 4 Year, $13.5 Million, and $2.60 Million signing bonus. His career stats currently stand at 44 tackles and two sacks. The Vikings appear to hope they can have him develop late at 28 years old and become a replacement for the aging Pat Williams, who is currently 35 years old.

Vikings Sign Tight End Jerramy Stevens

90

The Minnesota Vikings continue to make huge moves here in training camp, as they now sign former Seahawks 2002 1st Round Draft Pick Jerramy Stevens. The 28 year old Tight End out of Washington reportedly signed for a 2 Year, $2.92 Million, and $440K signing bonus. They are looking to hope he can play to his potential that he was unable to with the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers between 2002 and 2007.

Yeah, my Madden philosophy is pretty weird to be honest, but I'm a bit like Belichick in my dealings.

Technically, Gus was a better QB but his ratings suck. As long as you pass to open receivers, you should be fine though

Grim are you actually playing these games or are you just doing the owner route and letting the computer take over? I'd respect a super bowl win more if the computer did it tbh bc that's way harder to do
