I think Taylor Swift does, she's not on one that's consider a major record label, plus would she not not get more for producing the cd and writing the music? But yeah the one one she is with is an Independent American record label so she probably gets a good bit from CD Sales. I've bough all of hers.

Once you factor in production costs and marketing (which the record company pays for) and the fact that she has to pay all of that back before she even sees any money, its not as much as you'd think. Don't get me wrong, even at under $1 a CD she still profits, but compared to $30 a shirt it seems like less. Unless she owns her own publishing (not sure about that) she can't even profit a lot when her song is in a television show or a movie.

Well i mean 1 is better 0  it's just I do what I can to help the artist i truly like. If she has a concert come close enough by I'd to it and buy a shirt. But all I can do is buy a CD. But I mean I heard she makes a good amount but that's just what I heard

I'm sure she does alright, she sells a ton of records. That's actually another argument AGAINST anti-piracy laws, the sales of many artists have been proven to be boosted due to people being able to check them out for free before buying. Not everyone who downloads illegally doesn't also go out and buy their stuff.

Basically what I'm saying is the recording industry has been pulling the wool over the eyes of too many people and I can't wait to see them exposed.

More than you think, which is why the record companies are such hypocrites. Two years ago, in the midst of their supposed piracy crisis, they made more money than they ever had before in a single year. Hmmm........

Same thing for other mediums. It's a true fact that the #1 pirated film last year happens to the highest grossing film of all time, Avatar.

Their arguments in Hollywood hold even less water than in the recording industry. They know it too, that's why they are so eager to see some of these sites shut down so it can establish a precedent. A very dangerous one at that. However, these industries are very powerful and have lobbyists that work hard for them. Fuck man, I bet the Hollywood lobbyists are at least as powerful and influential as the anti-smoking ones.

I don't usually involve myself in debates but this one interest me .

My take is was and will be simple .

red-pill-or-blue-pill.jpg

"You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes." -Morpheus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_pill_and_blue_pill#cite_note-0http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_pill_and_blue_pill#cite_note-0

also lyrics from an old Edge theme ..........
"You know what I allow you to know"

Or what the labels and movie companies or other companies want you to too. Personally I like to think I'm not blind and I know the truth and the red pill .

I wouldn't normally do this but if anyone is interested in exactly what is going on with the record companies I would be glad to fill in some of the blanks.

This is a common misconception in the music industry. If you really like an artist you should go to their show and buy their shirt. They make next to nothing from the sale of their CD, particularly if they are distributed/signed to a major record label. By contrast, a band can make close to 80% of the profit on the sale of their merchandise.

Let's be honest here, how many people actually do this?

I have no misconceptions about how little money bands make from CD's nowadays, you can see it from the fact CD prices half after being released for 6 months that there's little money to be made from them.

I'm friends with several musicians and trust me, more people buy shirts than you think. Even a small, local Toronto band can do quite well with shirt sales. Hell, one band I know makes a ton of dough off buttons alone, never mind the shirts.
