2008 PWI MOTY: WrestleMania XXIV - Career Threatening Match: Ric Flair vs Shawn Michaels
The crowd is obviously super into this, so they start it pretty basic with the crowd cheering everytime Flair does anything. Flair starts yelling at Michaels for calling him Old Yeller so Michaels slaps him so hard he bites his lip and it starts bleeding They keep going back and forth, and YOU THINK FLAIR IS GONNA GET THROWN OFF THE TOP BUT HE LANDS A FUCKING CROSSBODY FIRST TIME SINCE 1984 I ASSUME Michaels goes for a springboard moonsault on the outside, but Flair moves so Michaels lands sick af on his sternum on the announce table. JR brings up referee Charles Robinson being a huge Flair fan LIL NAITCH Flair’s offense really isn’t that great, he works the lower back okay, but I would have preferred him just go for the leg bc he was always better at that anyway. Michaels recovers and back drops Flair over the top rope, then Michaels hits a top rope moonsault to the floor that connects this time. Michaels starts doing his usual combo, but still selling his hurt ribs/back pretty well. He nails the elbow drop then slowly starts tuning up the band, but pulls up so Flair capitalizes and locks in the Figure-4, wow if only he’d worked the leg a little before this :hm: Michaels reverses the pressure to get out of it, then they try to do a bridge spot, but it doesn’t work, but they sell it well. Flair is able to hit a nice chop block, but Michaels reverses the Figure-4 into a small package for a two count, but then Flair is able to lock it back on. They work it for awhile until Michaels finally makes it to the ropes, really good job selling his desperation. Flair gets caught strutting and walks right into a sick Sweet Chin Music, but Flair is able to kick out at 2 as Michaels barely crawls over to him. Michaels yells at Flair to get up as he tunes up the band again, but Flair plays possum and catches him with a sneak low blow Michaels then catches Flair with his modified Figure-4, but Flair makes it to the ropes and takes off the bottom tunbuckle pad and catches Michaels with a thumb to the eye as the ref was putting it back on, then gets a close two count with a handful of tights. They have another chopping battle until Michaels is able to hit Sweet Chin Music out of nowhere again. Flair gets up and he’s already fuckin’ crying bc it’s over so Michaels does the “I’m sorry, I love you” kick for the win. Someone needs to stop cutting these goddamn onions in here, but I can’t help but point out that this wasn’t even the best match of the night. The crowd gives Naitch a standing ovation afterwards as he’s crying his eyes out, really great moment.
WON FOTY: UFC 86: Jackson vs Griffin - UFC Light Heavyweight Championship: Quinton Jackson (c) vs Forrest Griffin
They’re on their feet for most of the first round, each landing some good shots with Griffin more active, but he gets caught with a right hand and taken down by Jackson. Griffin’s defense is nice so he’s able to get out and they finish the round with a nice stand-up exchange. IDK who won that one tbh close af. Griffin catches Jackson with a nice leg kick early on to take him down in round 2, and he dominates Griffin for the rest of the round basically, almost getting a few submissions, but landing a lot of solid shots from full mount. Easy round for Griffin. They’re on their feet again for the whole third round, Griffin engaged more, but Jackson landed better shots so again a close round. Jackson comes out swinging in the 4th round and ends up on top after Griffin tries a desperation takedown. Griffin locks in a triangle choke from bottom, so Jackson goes for a powerbomb slam, but Griffin lets go of the submission to avoid most of the impact. Griffin got a nasty cut over his eye after the stand-up exchange to start this round. They exchange on their feet again for the last minute or so with Jackson getting a few more shots in. Super close going into the last round, Joe Rogan thinks Griffin is winning, but it’s close af. They fight standing up the entire 5th round as well, decent stuff with Griffin probably getting more in. Griffin ends up winning by decision with two judges scoring it 48-46 and one scoring it 49-46 for a super close fight.
WON MOTY: No Mercy - Ladder Match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Chris Jericho (c) vs Shawn Michaels
This video package showing this amazing feud Jericho comes out first even though he’s champion This starts with just some great brawling, continuing on their hate-filled feud. Jericho’s heel work is great, as he stops Michaels’s comebacks before they can really start before bringing a ladder into play for the first time, but Michaels avoids it, only for Jericho to lock on the Walls of Jericho out of the ring. Cool spot where Jericho is trying to drag a ladder into the ring, but Michaels see-saw hits it into his face. Jericho goes for a catapult on Michaels into a ladder set up in the middle of the ring but Michaels catches himself and almost gets to the belt really quickly before Jericho knocks him off Michaels is able to comeback and starts working on Jericho’s knee after slamming a ladder onto it, and he keeps using the ladder pretty creatively to hurt Jericho’s knee. Jericho is able to kick the ladder right into Michaels’s face, and they bring up the eye injury Jericho had caused as Jericho slams the ladder down hard af on Michaels’s head JESUS! Jericho gets pushed off the ladder, but lands on his feet and forgets that his knee is supposed to be hurting I guess Michaels sends Jericho over the top rope and then just throws a fuckin ladder at him from the ring Michaels sets up a ladder and strips the Smackdown announce table, but Jericho mets him on the ladder and both men fall through the table, so now Tazz and JR don’t have anywhere to sit the rest of the match. They keep going back and forth using the ladder in interesting ways in the ring. Lmao Michaels’s dumbass goes for an elbow drop on the ladder so he like breaks his arm, not the best spot they shouldn’t have forced that. Michaels tuning up the band while barely standing and leaning on the middle rope is awesome, and he just gets hit hard af with the ladder when he comes in for the kick. Jericho pins Michaels under the ladder and goes for the belt, but Michaels is able to lift it and push it forward so Jericho take a nasty bump to the outside. Michaels has a clear shot to the belt now, but Jericho barely gets in to save his title at the last second. They both end up on the ladder with Jericho getting trapped upside down on the ladder, but Lance Cade comes out to help Jericho so Michaels jumps down to take care of him with Sweet Chin Music, meanwhile Jericho recovers and they have this AMAZING sequence where both men unhook the belt and try and get it down before Jericho headbutts Michaels off and wins One of the better ladder matches of all time, definitely the best ladder match finish of all time tbh.
WON WMOTY: Survivor Series - WWE Championship: Triple H (c) vs Edge vs Vladimir Kozlov
So this was supposed to be a triple threat match with Jeff Hardy, but Hardy was “found unconscious in his hotel room” bc they thought a fake overdose angle was a great idea, so we’re just getting HHH/Kozlov supposedly. Lol this sucks ass, the crowd starts chanting “boring” and “we want Hardy” early af as they just do rest holds mostly with nothing of note happening at all. HHH starts getting something going, but the crowd is just booing like crazy still bc they don’t care at all. HHH goes for a Pedigree, but Kozlov cancels and lets HHH run right into his head which looks like it should break Kozlov’s neck, but it hurts them both. Kozlov’s offense is so meh, he just does the most basic shit that barely looks like it’d hurt. Kozlov works a bearhug for what feels like forever before HHH uses the “we want Hardy” chants to get momentum Tazz goes on record and says that Kozlov is gonna win the WWE title tonight HHH hits a Pedigree after reversing one move and both men are down. Vickie Guerrero comes out and says “I promised this will be a triple threat match, ladies and gentlemen HE’S HERE!” so the crowd thinks it’s Hardy, but instead Edge returns SWERVE I guess. Edge spears Triple H, but then Jeff Hardy comes running out to a huge pop and goes to hit Edge with a chair, but instead hits HHH, so he hits Kozlov too, but then gets caught with a Spear from Edge who covers HHH for the win. FUCK THIS CLUSTERFUCK BULLSHIT!
