Basterds was fucking awesome. Jackie Brown was very strong as well. Pulp Fiction was OK, although I do think it's overrated. Reservoir Dogs is DEFINITELY overrated. Have yet to watch Kill Bill (I know, I know...). True Romance was OK as well.

OH and I completely forgot about Steven Spielberg. He is great!

Don't you mean USED TO BE great?! *Cough* RuinedArtificialIntelligencewithaliensandahappyending! *cough*

Also, from Danny Boyle, do watch The Beach. Give 127 Hours a pass. From Kubrick, you owe it to yourself to see Full Metal Jacket.

Haha! That's true. His movies used to be a lot better. Schindler's List is my favorite film by him actually. I have not watched Jaws yet. I am scared to. :/

I did watch The Beach! I didn't know he directed it until yesterday. I'll have to re-watch it though. I can't remember the film that well.

I really want to watch Full Metal Jacket. Is Clockwork Orange good? Any other recommendations?

Full Metal Jacket & Clockwork Orange are my favortie Kubrick films. The Shinning, Spartacus, & Eyes Wide Shut are also good, and it really wasnt my kind of movie, but 2001: A Space Odyssey also gets alot of praise from others.

Clockwork Orange IS good, but you need a strong stomach (for FMJ as well, come to think about it). 2001 is also recommended viewing, if only for its relevance in movie history (never saw it myself, but definitely plan to).

Spielberg's recent Adventures of Tintin was a return to form, admittedly. My favourites from him have to be Jurassic Park and Raiders. Used to be everything he touched turned to gold (American Tail, Gremlins, Back To The Future, Indy), but sadly, not anymore.

^By todays standards, are they really all that graphic? Compared to Saving Private Ryan, FMJ is relatively tame in the graphic department, and I dont want to give anything away, but the idea of Ultra Violence has changed since Clockwork Orange came out.

I watched Full Metal Jacket. I enjoyed the first half a lot more than the second half. I suppose that's because I'm not into war movies.

Full Metal Jacket begat my mancrush on R. Lee Ermey and molded me into the man I wanted to be.

But other than that, it wasn't much of a 'Nam movie.

Clockwork Orange is a good movie, but it isn't all that graphic outside of nudity by todays standards.

Amazing movie imo. I do not think it's portrayal of Electro Convulsive therapy is accurate though. Was it ECT or "Aversion theray"? I forget.

Kubrick for me is one of those classic when he is good he is very good and when's he bad he really goes off on one directors. Full Metal, Clockwork and Dr Stangelove great, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut terrible and 2001 overrated.

Spielberg's best two films are Jaws and ET. He is best when he does classic adventure stories the Indy films are an example of this too, but when he tackles more serious subject matters such as in The Colour Purple he falls down. His best recent film which I saw was War of the Worlds.

Start watching his films NOW!

True Romance was horrible. I despise that movie!

As for my favorite directors, here is my list:

Martin Scorsese
Quentin Tarantino
Christopher Nolan
Darren Aronofsky
Kevin Smith

I think Danny Boyle and David Fincher are great directors. In regards to Boyle, Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire were great films but I have not seen his other films yet. As for David Fincher, Fight Club and Se7en were great and although I was not that impressed with The Social Network, a lot of people do praise that film. I would like to watch more of his films though.

I would like to watch Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch's films. They were mentioned quite a bit in this thread.

As for Stanley Kubrick, I've only seen The Shining. I would love to watch his other films as well.

Tim Burton is awful now. I thought his earlier films were pretty good but I definitely don't think he is that great.

OH and I completely forgot about Steven Spielberg. He is great!

You should watch Danny Boyle's debut Shallow Grave also black comedy with a great cast. 28 Days was awesome very impressive Trainspotting is a favourite of mine.

Lynch wise you should watch Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man, Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive and the Straight Story to start with.

Hitchcock I woud go with Rear Window, Vertigo, Rope, Spellbound and Psycho to start with.

Don't tell him to watch Mullholland Drive! He'll be confused forever!

And whatever you do, DO NOT WATCH ERASERHEAD! Unless you want to waste 90 minutes and be turned off Lynch forever.

Been meaning to watch Shallow Grave, but the Ewan McGregor character really puts me off each time.

Why not? With some background reading I think that Mulholland Drive would make for some perfectly intriguing watching for him, imo. Without spoiling too much. (I mean, is there anything to spoil? It depends on how you read the film...) I have a neat Freudian explanation wrapped up, along with a diagnosis, but I don't know whether this was Lynch's thinking in making the film. Could be anything. I mean, my head is fairly pedestrian compared to his.

Don't watch Eraserhead unless you've gotten used to Lynch's weirdness. I'd suggest Blue Velvet or the Twin Peaks TV series to begin with. Dale Copper is his most approachable character. His eccentricities etc, it's all so common of a pedestrian man, his obsession with coffee, reminds me of me and tea, his particular preference for certain kinds of foods, the character is loveable imo.

Oh, and Lost Highway is a MINDFUCK of a movie.

Hitchcock I woud go with Rear Window, Vertigo, Rope, Spellbound and Psycho to start with.

+ North by Northwest, Strangers on a Train (imo)

On a not related note, I'm always reminded of Hitchcock when I watch American Psycho. (Not psycho) [The music]

Kubrick is the most overrated fucking director of all time. The director's only job is to make the actors perform well and there's only 1 or 2 good actors in every single one of his movies. His movies are a revolutionary cure for insomnia.
