I watched Dead Heat and it’s cheesy but that’s to be expected I suppose. It’s cheesy but not in a bad kind of cheesy, more of a kind of fun cheesy. If you like movies with quips and one liners then this is the movie for you because this movie is chock full of them.

The special effects don’t look bad for the time and it’s a neat concept for a movie. The chemistry between Joe Piscopo and Treat Williams is good too. I knew who Piscopo was but never had seen anything with him in it until now and he’s not bad, Treat Williams is someone I’ve seen in some stuff and always liked him. Vincent Price being in this was kind of fun too.

Overall, it’s not bad, it’s not great by any means but it’s not bad. If you’re expecting the typical buddy cop movie well that’s what you kind of get but with a twist, it’s definitely a movie that doesn’t take itself seriously and you can tell the cast had fun making this.

6.5/10

Well... this was a fuckin' weird ass movie :lol

Basically a buddy cop movie, that begins like you'd expect, but gets outta hand hard and fast. The biggest positive, for me, is Treat Williams here and the whole transformation his character goes through, not just visually, but in his demeanor as well... just to end up pretty much like the Richard Mortis (Bonus point for that name btw, when you realize that he's technically dead for most of the movie :lol ) he was at the beginning in the final exchange with Zombie-Doug. That was a very fun character arch to watch unfold. Piscopo and Williams both were good as a tandem too. I'll definitely have to check more of Treat's work out. Extra shout out to Darren McGavin as McNab, an actual fun, entertaining villain.

Other than that, I also appreciate that they did do things in this movie, that you wouldn't really expect. Like killing off both "love interests", something I have never seen done in any 80s or even 90s movie in the whole Action/Comedy genre. In hindsight, yea, I guess one could've at least expected the twist with the Randi James character, but I definitely wasn't. I guess that one-two punch of Doug getting killed and immediately afterwards she melting away helped with that. Those special effects in that scene were great too, by the way. It's a shame to think that kind of quality and creative handiwork is pretty much extinct nowadays.

Overall, it's not bad, it's not amazing. I agree with Jimmy here and give it a 6.5 outta 10.

Oh yea... "Lady, I'm fucking dead." is a quote I will definitely take up in my personal book of quotes. :lol

Glad you enjoyed it
The movie is quite the treat

:cocopete
I had that pun in my head the whole day... and then forgot to put it in my review :lol

But it's true, yea. Treat Williams was the best thing about it.

dead-heat-dvd-movie-cover.jpg

Before we begin, I feel it pertinent to mention that the DVD cover I posted does indeed say "these CAPS". I once bought a copy of this movie from a Chinese mall solely for that grammatical error. Imagine my confusion when I realized that it wasn't an error and was greenlit for the ACTUAL DVD, likely by the same people that single-handedly propped up Bolivia's economy by producing this flick! That's not meant as a knock either, because Dead Heat is one hell of an entertaining piece of cine-trash, cocaine financing or not.

Your mileage on this one is definitely going to vary depending on how much you like Treat Williams (RIP) and Joe Piscopo on a scale of 1-10. I'm around an 8.5, particularly where Williams is concerned, having loved him in stuff like The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper and Deep Rising. He was a very versatile actor and it's a shame that he left us so soon. Piscopo is definitely an acquired taste, but he's usually pretty reliable when he's left to his own devices, which seems to be the case here. They have good chemistry, hit the right lines at the right time and really that's all you can ask for in a movie about a zombie CAP named Roger Mortis.

There's also some solid support from Fuji Fave Darren "Kolchak, The Night Stalker" McGavin, Robert "Johnny Cab/Voyager Doctor" Picardo, Keye "Grasshopper" Luke and Professor Toru "Sub Zero, now plain zero" Tanaka. Even Vincent MOTHERF**KING Price manages to get in on the action, though, sadly, his role is pretty small in the grand scheme of things. I know most people will consider Edward Scissorhands to be his "final" film, but that movie sucks, so I'm saying it's Dead Heat and if you don't like it, tough toenails.

When re-watching this movie, I was anticipating one line in particular, having always found the delivery hilarious. I am quite happy to say that Treat Williams saying "I'm dead, Rebecca. How much worse can it get?" was still enough to make me spit my drink out, and yes, I took a sip right before because I WANTED TO SPIT MY DRINK OUT OK?!?!?! Anyhow, I'm not about to say Dead Heat is a masterpiece, or even really a good movie by the metrics people use to rate them, but it's entertaining as all hell to me and still managed to get a drink to shoot out of my face. If that's not worth a 6/10 then I really don't know what is these days.
