Since we're only a couple of weeks away from the end of 2012 (or sooner if you buy into that Mayan crap) I figured its time to bring out the old "Best Movies of the Year" thread. Obviously there's a ton of choices here, from big blockbusters like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises to James Bond's triumphant return in Skyfall and Ridley Scott's stellar prequel to Alien, Prometheus. There have also been many excellent films that may have fallen under most people's radar, such as PT Anderson's excellent The Master, Beasts of the Southern Wild and a strong outing for Steve Carell in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. There's pretty much no right or wrong answer here, as everyone looks at movies differently, but I'm definitely interested in seeing what each of our picks are for the absolute best that we saw this year.
I'll be posting my Top Ten in Fuji's Top Ten in the next couple of days, but for now I'll say that as far as mainstream films go, I'm sticking with Prometheus as my favourite. While it didn't do the big money business that Avengers, Dark Knight Rises or Amazing Spiderman did, it managed to take the Alien mythology out a whole new door while also remaining one of the most entertaining movies of the year.
