Since we're only a couple of weeks away from the end of 2012 (or sooner if you buy into that Mayan crap) I figured its time to bring out the old "Best Movies of the Year" thread. Obviously there's a ton of choices here, from big blockbusters like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises to James Bond's triumphant return in Skyfall and Ridley Scott's stellar prequel to Alien, Prometheus. There have also been many excellent films that may have fallen under most people's radar, such as PT Anderson's excellent The Master, Beasts of the Southern Wild and a strong outing for Steve Carell in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. There's pretty much no right or wrong answer here, as everyone looks at movies differently, but I'm definitely interested in seeing what each of our picks are for the absolute best that we saw this year.

I'll be posting my Top Ten in Fuji's Top Ten in the next couple of days, but for now I'll say that as far as mainstream films go, I'm sticking with Prometheus as my favourite. While it didn't do the big money business that Avengers, Dark Knight Rises or Amazing Spiderman did, it managed to take the Alien mythology out a whole new door while also remaining one of the most entertaining movies of the year.

I present two choices. Best & favourite.

The all round best film I saw this year was Looper. Absolutely incredible film, and the lack of mentions so far leads me to believe more people need to see it. Fantastic cast, phenomenal story, hard to top.

But in terms of my favourite film, it's gotta be The Avengers. I don't think I've ever marked out for a film so much, so much fun, Wheldon nailed it perfectly.

The Hunger Games was my favourite film of the year.

Funnily enough, this is in my top 10 worst films of the year.

Best - Silver Linings Playbook. An excellent film with great writing, acting, and especially directing. David O. Russell keeps getting better and better.

Favourite - The Dark Knight Rises. I'm a huge Batman fan so it definitely is my foty.

It was a fun movie. Not the best acted movie but a fun and awesome film. Check out my review here.

I also liked Avengers, Taken Two (not as good as the first but decent enough for me). I also saw Jack Reacher. Not Bad could have been so much better but Cruise does well if you know the story they are using.

Speaking of Cruise, I loved Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Never seen any others but this one was good.

I thought my choices would be between Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises but Looper was just amazing. Prometheus was another really great movie. Comedy wise, I could watch 21 Jump Street 100 times.

Life of Pi has made a very late impact on my top 5 films for 2012. Amazing film, very faithful to the source material.
