I'd go with Michael Jackson if he counts. He was a recent and long-lasting cultural icon the world over who's influence still lives now.

I couldn't tell you who the pope is right now tho? Bill gates is a good shout. Steve Jobs would have been another punt at it..

Or Mother Theresa.

I'm assuming dead people and mythical beings count, so:

God, Hitler, Mahatma Ghandi, Santa Claus, Jesus Christ, Che Guevara (because most people know his face, even if they don't know who he is), Elvis.

"Pop-culture-famous": Michael Jackson, Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Ozzy Osbourne, Cristiano Ronaldo, Justin Bieber, Robert Pattinson, Daniel Radcliffe, Lady GaGa, John Lennon, George W. Bush Jr., Bill Gates, Steve (Blow)Jobs.

NOTE: I'm using "famous" in the sense of "even the smallest little kid in a faraway village in Africa has probably heard of them".
