Not normally a fan of this kind of storyline in wrestling, but once in awhile you do get a real gem which is given time to build and has a believable and enjoyable element to it and is also
linked to wrestling issues. So in the middle of the current Bryan/AJ/Punk love triangle I thought I would give you my top five ever soap related stories in Wrestling. I will stick with WWE as
I can't think of any great ones from elsewhere but feel free to suggest some.

1. Ric Flair claims to have had past realtions with Macho Man's wife Elizabeth going into their Wrestlemania VIII match, Spring 1992
The dirtest player in the game decided to play the ultimate mind game with Macho in the lead up to their WWF Title bout at Mania 8 by claiming that his main squeeze Elizabeth once unpon a time was
involved with the nature Boy. Flair went on using this claim to taught the challenger for his title and even went as far as to produce photos of the couple (Flair and Liz) together printed in the WWF magazine. In the end the pictures proved to fulse. This story was totally logical as what better way for someone to thrown a challenger off than to claim to have had a realtionship with the most precous thing in his life his wife, and the added touch of producing photos and having them published in a magazine made the angle feel all the more real and added a further layer of evil to Flair's character not least after it was proven than they were fakes. Of course both guys played their parts in a compelling story to perfection and it was topped off with a very heated match at the ppv.

2. Battle of the Sexes Chris Jericho and Christian VS. Lita and Trish Stratus, Fall/Winter 2003/early 2004
This one worked well for a number of reasons, firstly it was made clear all the way through that Jericho and Christian were the slimy, egotistical guys who were set up to fail and deserved everything they got (just like when Hugh Grant is cast as a knobhead in movies) and it made the fans get behind the faces more. Also the four involved were very believable in their roles, you had Trish
and Lita two of the most popluar female wrestlers maybe ever and Jericho and Christian who were just born to be cocky and over bearing. It was given time to build and of course at one
point fans were even fooled into believing that Jericho cared about Trish before the whole thing was revealed to be part of a nasty bet between the heels. It kept fans guessing, was believeable
and was paced just right.

3. Daniel Bryan/AJ/CM Punk Love Triangle, May 2012-present
Enough said about this one really but it has been far more complex than these sorts of sagas normally are and with the plus point of the AJ being presented as a smart and complex female character, as well as the fact that she herself has been excellent in the angles, it has gotten her over and puts her in a strong position when the whole thing is over.

4. Kurt Angle/Stephanie Mcmahon/Triple H Love Triangle, Summer 2000
With H's onscreen wife (at the time) things seem very rosey for them before Kurt Angle started getting momentum and becoming one of WWF's most talked about stars leading to a new supporting in
Stephanie Mcmahon much to the dislike of her husband. The story actually started early in 2000, but at that time it was only hinted at that there might be something there, it wasn't until the summer
where Kurt started to really full for Stephaine which caused all sorts of problems and tensions in her realtionship with Hunter as well as slow building feud between him and Angle. It all worked so well because there were moments where it seemed like Stephanie liked Kurt too which added to the intrigue. The totally oppisites of HHH and Angle with Stephanie in the middle made for some very entertaining television and priceless comedy segments.

5. Macho Man/Elizabeth Reunite and get merried, March-August 1991
The emotional reunion between Macho and his former manager (and real life wife) Miss Elizabeth came after his dramatic career ending loss to Utlimate Warrior at Wrestlemania 7. It came after his current manager Sherri Martel turned on him post match and Elizabeth who had been watching the match in the crowd (the annoncers aknowledged her post-match and there were many shots of her
intense facial expressions throughout) finally decided to get involved coming to his rescue. After recovering his senses Matcho finally relized that Elizabeth was in the ring and just what had happened
and after some tension the pair finally reunited. This was carefully told tale and was a unique way to turn Macho face in the process. What followed was a summer long story which included the WWF
finally reinstating Macho to the active roster and Macho purposing to Liz and their wedding at Summerslam.

Just missing out the top five: Billy and Chuck publicty stunt marriage, Fall 2002(okey they were terrible but this story and epsically the wedding angle on Smackdown was priceless), Edge VS. Matt Hardy insider feud with Lita involved, Summer 2005 and Hogan-Macho Maga Powers explode, Fall 1988-Spring 1989.

That Battle of the Sexes angle was horrible, I just recently watched all the Raws from December '03 until 'Mania XX, so that's fresh on my mind. Other than that, I agree with all these.

I would of had Kurt Angle/Stephanie Mcmahon/Triple H & Macho Man/Elizabeth Reunite above Battle of the Sexes and AJ/Bryan/Punk.

Also the who ran over Austin was Soap Opera Storyline right?, if so i would have it before Battle of the Sexes. Also the Undertaker has a brother named Kane in my top 5.

Rapist Angle was one of the greatest gimmicks people forget about.

As for the thread, I really liked the 'who got Stacy Keibler pregnant' one in WCW until it got royally fucked in the end. One of the worst payoffs to an angle ever.

So much nostalgia watching that Angle promo, awesome. Gutter slut!

The HHH/Angle/Stephanie love triangle was my fave I think. It was when I was getting really into wrestling for the first time and the storyline had me hooked line and sinker.

Well the Austin storyline was crap as it was just a lame way to remove him from TV and create a over the top storyline around it, and I didn't like the Taker-Kane one either, now that doesn't mean I don't like Kane and Taker as characters, but that whole saga with the fire storyline and Bearer's involvement was totally crap.

That Angle stalker story was in poor taste and you guys should be ashamed of yourselves for condoming it. So its alright to call a woman a slut when she hasn't done anything to even lead the man on and its alright to stalk or make light of stalking and rapeing someone just because its only a storyline? Part of the appeal of wrestling is that it is escapist entertainment which people watch to wind down and leave their daily problems at the door, they do not expect to see such depressing, sad aspects of every day life brought. Angle should have refused the storyline.

What was wrong with the Battle of the Sexes Storyline?

Triple H/Kane/Katie Vick is still my personal favorite, then Mark Henry/Mae Younge, & Kane/Tori/X-Pac.

I could care less about the content of a story, its sole purpose is to suspend belief, and entertain. movies like I Spit on your Grave, Last House on the Left, & Wicked Lake all base the stories around rape, but the entertainment comes from their revenge, same with Michonne in The Walking Dead, getting raped was her first major story. It is all about seeing the good triumph over evil.

Part of the appeal of wrestling is that it is escapist entertainment which people watch to wind down and leave their daily problems at the door, they do not expect to see such depressing, sad aspects of every day life brought.

That might be why you watch wrestling, movies, or other television, but ratings wont lie. Spartacus is one of the biggest shows going right now, and its about a man who is enslaved, forced into sex, and combat. There is also Dexter, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, & all of those cop dramas, that rely on depressing, sad stories. So I would think you are in a minority with that opinion.

^Yes but wrestling and TV drama are two very different things. Yes serious issues should be raised in art, but the reason wrestling decides to use these issues is to get cheap heat for heels or rather more desturbing because they actually find something entertaining about them. The art of Pro Wrestling is to put on a wrestling match which engages the crowd and makes them believe in the guys in the ring. What purpose do these storylines serve? What was the point of the Terri Rennels miscarrage story? Like Jim Cornette once said it serves no purpose either way because if it was real and that really happened to her then its a terrible thing to have happened, but if its fake then why because it serves no purpose? It doesn't sell a ticket, it doesn't draw money all it does is give people a bad feeling. Spot on Jim! Enough said.

You used Dexter as a example, but don't forget that is a very funny and entertaining show also, it is dark and gripping, but it doesn't glamous rape or murder it just covers it because it is a part of every day life. It is the job of TV and Movies to cover these issues it is not the job of Pro Wrestling, they are very different art forms.

Trish'a horrible acting (before she turned heel) is what ruined the Battle of the Sexes angle for me. Christian was good in it, but other than that, the segments were horrible. The Armageddon match was actually good though.

Jim Cornette is still living in the 70s when people in tiny smoky bingo halls were watching rasslin' and thought it was legit sports. The whole aspect of wrestling post-kayfabe is to showcase athletic sports operas.

Storylines are integral to sports entertainment, namely because we watch this shit weekly and in the old kayfabe days nobody could watch weekly episodic TV wrestling. Just watching a Superstars type show with just matches would get boring. You need to keep viewers interested in your product and how do you do that? By putting something more on the line than just a win/lose scenario.

Every legit sport does it.

Ali/Wepner was sold on racial tension.

Eli Manning winning another Superbowl and passing his bro.

See where I'm going with this?

If WWE thinks it's a good idea to put on such over the top storylines, I'm not goin' to complain or find reasons to nitpick especially in this era. I'm goin' to try find things I find funny out of it. I enjoy Katie Vick stuff and Gutter Slut stuff but I don't take it seriously. Wrestling has evolved to a state where it can't really come back from in this form. Tasteless things will continue to happen in wrestling... Does it make a tasteless person to accept them and continue to be a wrestling fan? If it does in your eyes than I guess I'm tasteless.

I am not sure whether its soap-opearish or not , but that Vince Illegitimate son storyline was a big bomb . Its was probably even more dumb than that bullshit limo explosion angle . Sure wrestling need storyline , but these angles are like , showing Cena fly like a superman , in a pre-taped segment . A storyline or a character is good and effective only when people can relate to it and can suspend their disbelif easily , just like movies , e.t.c... . Kane having sex with a deadwomen / katy vick angle was a dark soap-operish storyline too .
