The only thing I can think of is they were being cautious about continuing to push BC/Elite guys since the majority left for AEW and Scurll’s contract was coming due at the end of the year. So they figured build up an in house heel in Taven and if Scurll stays, we can pull the trigger later.

AEW and Covid colliding was probably always gonna be disaster for ROH. Only so many mainstream promotions fans can pay attention to and hard to compete for talent when there’s now WWE/AEW/NJPW/Impact spending money to outbid you.

I mean hell you are seeing the after effects of it with NJPW now too - it hurt the Japanese economy big time and the clap crowd made a lot of wrestlers depressed . TNA barely stayed afloat and needed help a bit. a lot of indies shut down for a full year. really was a perfect storm to kill roh sadly

I think the timing was really the main issue with Taven from what I understand. They had this big show at Madison Square Garden on the biggest stage of their company's history. Putting the belt on a mid carder pinched in between okada vs jay white and ibushi vs naito made them look kind of like lil league. it wasn't Taven's fault, it just was not the event to do it. And unfortunately for Taven, he was unfairly blamed for ROH overall shitting the bed and basically killing the roh njpw partnership.

I don't think Taven as world champion is offensive by itself, the context of how it happened I think was the dick kick that made ppl sour

I thought the cruise, especially look good, because the purple and silver I thought really complemented each other.

I think, while it was the better decision in hindsight given him later being outted for sleeping with a 16 year old trainee, Marty not winning at G1 Supercard was deflating to people since he was the most over person in the match and Marty did end up staying in ROH when his contract ran out. But Taven was a good wrestler who just wasn't "hot enough" as a commodity and he didn't have enough people to face since years of WWE taking their stars, adding a second company now doing it, hurt ROH.

But at least Taven didn't abuse being in a place of authotity to sleep with a teenager. So, Go Taven.
