Sacha Baron Cohen, possibly better known as Ali G, Borat, Bruno and Admiral General Aladeen, has made a career out of creating extreme comedy characters and immersing them in every day life on the unsuspecting public. He shot to fame as Ali G on The 11 O'Clock Show and was so successful that they gave him his own show, Da Ali G show.
I remember watching Da Ali G show when it aired and I was a fan right away. The clever way that he uses the character to expose peoples hidden prejudices is great and his interview with Mohammad Al Fayed where he raps with him is one of my favourite moments. He created a film based on the Ali G character but it wasn't as well received because it was completely scripted and didn't involve any of the segments with unsuspecting public that fans of the show usual expect to see. I myself liked the movie even though it was completely scripted, it was still a funny movie.
His next movie was Borat and that became one of the biggest hits of the summer. This time it was a mockumentary that featured him interviewing the public who had no clue as to who he was. It was an eye opener and how he managed to stay straight faced throughout the entire movie I do not know. I think that this was his best work and he thoroughly deserved the Golden Globe award.
He has done two more in character films with Bruno and The Dictator both of which had mixed success.
Outside of his own movies he has also appeared in big hits like Talledega Nights and Sweeney Todd. I especially liked him in Sweeney Todd which is just a brilliant movie. He is also scheduled to star as Queen's lead signer Freddy Mercury in a movie about his life entitled Mercury. That will be a real test for him to show his range and show how well he can play serious.
What do people think about Cohen? Are you are a fan of him as an actor and his films and if so what are your favourites?
