Re: NFL Discussion Thread - Wildcard Weekend

Well RGIII tore his LCL:

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III suffered a partially torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee during Sunday's playoff game against the Seahawks, a source said.

Griffin also likely tore at least part of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), but it's unknown how severe it is because a previous knee injury he suffered at Baylor in 2009 required two screws and a rubber band to hold it together.

Graziano: RG Knee

Without much information on Robert Griffin III's knee injury, we are left to connect dots and it may not be a pretty picture, Dan Graziano writes. Blog

Because of the previous injury, doctors initially could not determine Monday if his ACL was partially or completely torn and doctors don't know what surgery should be performed.

The Washington Post reported earlier that Griffin's MRI suggested partial tears to the ACL and LCL.

Griffin, who entered Sunday's wild-card playoff game already nursing a previously sprained LCL in the same knee, appeared to tweak the knee on a pass attempt in the first quarter and then left the game in the fourth quarter after twisting his leg while attempting to recover a muffed shotgun snap.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said in a news conference Monday the results of the MRI are prompting the team to send Griffin to Pensacola, Fla., on Tuesday to see orthopedist Dr. James Andrews, who serves as a Redskins' physician, for further examinations to determine how to proceed.

"There is a concern," Shanahan said. "That's why he's going to see him."

Andrews, meanwhile, tried to clarify comments he made Sunday to USA Today that he didn't clear Griffin to return to the Dec. 9 game in which he originally hurt his knee, as Shanahan had claimed the following day.

On Monday, Andrews told The Washington Post that "Shanahan didn't lie about it, and I didn't lie."

"I didn't get to examine (Griffin's knee) because he came out for one play, didn't let us look at him and on the next play, he ran through all the players and back out onto the field," he told the newspaper.

"Coach Shanahan looks at me like, 'Is he OK?' and I give him the 'Hi' sign as in, 'He's running around, so I guess he's OK.' But I didn't get to check him out until after the game. It was just a communication problem. Heat of battle. I didn't get to tell him I didn't get to examine the knee. Mike Shanahan would never have put him out there at risk just to win a game."

Hope he is healed in time for next season.

Hmm, that was pretty stupid they allowed someone they put so much money into to play on such an serious injury. Very careless.

Re: NFL Discussion Thread - Wildcard Weekend

Jags Fire Mularkey:

The more Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan watched his team play, the more he realized one thing:

"We needed a rebuild from the ground up," Khan said.

So the Jaguars fired coach Mike Mularkey on Thursday after just one season, the worst in franchise history. The move came 10 days after Khan fired general manager Gene Smith.

Khan also introduced new GM David Caldwell on Thursday, and by parting ways with Mularkey, gave him a clean slate heading into 2013.

More from ESPN.com

Paul Kuharsky takes a look at the Jaguars' head coaching candidates, the team's starting QB dilemma and the brief tenure of fired coach Mike Mularkey. Blog

"I've always been a part of a winner," said Caldwell, who signed a five-year deal. "I've never been a part of a losing team."

Mularkey becomes the eighth NFL coach fired since the regular season ended. Two of those teams have since hired new coaches, with Andy Reid, who was fired by the Eagles, taking over the Chiefs and Doug Marrone joining the Bills.

Among candidates for the Jaguars coaching job are expected to be 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman, Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and Falcons special-teams coach Keith Armstrong, league sources told ESPN.

Roman and Caldwell were teammates and roommates in the 1990s while attending John Carroll University.

"I think Greg is a heck of a coach," Caldwell said.

The Jaguars already have requested permission from the Rams to interview Schottenheimer, according to a league source. Schottenheimer interviewed for the Jaguars' job last year.

Mularkey, who went 2-14 this season, became the eighth head coach fired since the end of the regular season. He looked like he would be one and done when Khan parted ways with Smith last week and gave Mularkey's assistants permission to seek other jobs. Even though Khan ultimately hired Mularkey, Smith directed the coaching search last January that started and ended with the former Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator.

"I felt like we needed a fresh start here," Caldwell said. "Coming in here as a first-time general manager, I'm looking for a co-builder of our team. When I talked to Shad in terms of a culture change along the football side, I felt like it was more of that. I felt like it was an atmosphere of change. I felt like that to do that, you've got to have a fresh start across the board."

Mularkey's brief tenure -- he didn't even last a year -- was filled with mistakes. His biggest one may have been his loyalty to Smith, who assembled a roster that lacked talent on both sides of the ball.

Mularkey probably stuck with Smith's franchise quarterback, Blaine Gabbert, longer than he should have. And the coach's insistence that the team was closer than outsiders thought and his strong stance that he had the roster to turn things around became comical as the losses mounted. The Jaguars lost eight games by at least 16 points, a staggering number of lopsided losses in a parity-filled league.

Mularkey would have been better served had he said publicly what he voiced privately: That the Jaguars didn't have enough playmakers or a starting-caliber quarterback.

Instead, he never conceded that Jacksonville was a rebuilding project that needed time.

Jaguars Coaches Trending Down

Including interim coaches, the Jaguars have had four head coaches, and Mike Mularkey's .125 winning percentage is the worst in franchise history. The 14 losses in 2012 were also a single-season worst in the franchise's existence.

Now it is -- and Khan made that clear Thursday.

"A year ago, when I came here, the organizational judgment was we were a pretty good team, just a few players and a draft away from really competing for a playoff spot," Khan said. "As the year progressed, it was pretty obvious that was not the case, and we would need a fresh start and a rebuild from the ground up."

Mularkey signed a three-year contract on Jan. 11, 2012, getting a second chance to be a head coach six years after resigning with the Buffalo Bills.

His return was shaky from the start.

His best player, running back Maurice Jones-Drew, skipped offseason workouts as well as training camp and the preseason in a contract dispute. His first draft pick, receiver Justin Blackmon, was arrested and charged with aggravated DUI in June. And his team was riddled with injuries, including key ones to linebacker Daryl Smith and Jones-Drew.

Even things Mularkey had control over went awry.

He had to backtrack after saying Chad Henne would compete with Gabbert for the starting job in March. He created a stir by threatening to fine players up to $10,000 for discussing injuries. He initially played rookie receiver Kevin Elliott over Cecil Shorts III early on. And he really irked some players with tough, padded practices late in a lost season.

Throw in the way he handled injuries to receiver Laurent Robinson (four concussions before going on IR) and Jones-Drew (admittedly should have had foot surgery sooner), and there were reasons to doubt whether Mularkey was cut out to be a head coach. Dating back to his final season in Buffalo, Mularkey has lost 20 of his last 23 games.

Caldwell and Mularkey spent four years together in Atlanta, getting to know each other well enough that Caldwell didn't need a sit down with Mularkey after he got the GM job Tuesday.

"It was tough," Caldwell said. "I have a ton of respect for Mike. ... It's never easy and that's probably the worst part of the business."

And they are not interested in Tebow either:

Tim Tebow won't be playing for his hometown team.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made it clear Thursday that they have no plans to pursue the popular and polarizing quarterback.

More From ESPN.com

New Jaguars general manager David Caldwell felt compelled to snuff out the Tim Tebow-to-Jacksonville storyline immediately, writes Paul Kuharsky. Blog

• AFC South Blog | Jets Blog

Tebow likely will be available this offseason after a disappointing campaign with the New York Jets, who were unable to find a consistent role for the former Heisman Trophy winner.

Sources told ESPN last month that the Jets likely will release Tebow, a Jacksonville native who has been linked to the Jaguars on numerous occasions.

But new general manager David Caldwell nixed the idea of acquiring Tebow at his introductory news conference Thursday.

"I can't imagine a scenario in which he'll be a Jacksonville Jaguar -- even if he's released," Caldwell said.

And Caldwell won't get any pushback from his new owner.

Shad Khan, who made a run at Tebow last year, said it was Caldwell's call.

"It's not my decision," Khan said. "I want to do whatever to help this team win. Who the players are is really the general manager's and coaches' -- it's a football-side operation decision. It's really not my decision."

What has changed for Khan in the 10 months since he wanted Tebow?

"I'm telling them to take a look at Tebow and they're saying, 'We're going to go in a different direction,'" Khan said. "That's the difference."

Tebow starred at nearby Florida, helping the team win two national championship, and created buzz that he would be a huge hit with the Jaguars. He would sell tickets and merchandise, many said, and bring the small-market franchise national recognition and Super Bowl rings.

SportsNation: No Tebow for Jags?

SportsNationThe new Jaguars GM says he isn't interested in Tim Tebow. Do you believe him? And what's Tebow's NFL future?
• Cast your votes!

Despite all the hype, the Jaguars passed on drafting Tebow in 2010 because former general manager Gene Smith didn't view him as a franchise quarterback.

But after Khan took over last year and the Denver Broncos quietly started shopping Tebow, Khan told Smith to look into acquiring the left-hander.

The Jaguars increased their offer several times. By the end of negotiations, Jacksonville had offered a fourth-round pick and agreed to pay $3 million of the $5 million in advance salary the Broncos had already paid Tebow. The money the Jaguars offered was better than the little more than $2.5 million the Jets agreed to pay, and the draft pick was nine spots higher than New York's fourth-round selection.

But it never really got down to the details.

The Broncos told the Jaguars they were allowing Tebow to choose between the teams, and the Jaguars believe Tebow picked the Jets because he felt he would have a better chance to compete for the quarterback job with Mark Sanchez than Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne.

Still, the Jets failed to find a way to effectively use Tebow this season.

Apparently, the Jaguars don't want to try now, either.

"We plan to address the quarterback situation, obviously," Caldwell said. "Blaine is the second-youngest quarterback in the NFL, but we're going to have open competition. Whether it's through draft or through free agency, we'll bring in some more people to compete at the quarterback position. We're going to let the best player win that position."

The Jets struggled offensively this season largely due to the erratic play of Sanchez, which fueled speculation that Tebow eventually would receive regular playing time on offense. Yet when Sanchez was benched, Jets coach Rex Ryan turned to seldom-used Greg McElroy instead of Tebow.

In all, Tebow was used for just 73 offensive plays for the Jets (6-10) this season.

Tebow, who has two years remaining on his contract, spoke Thursday for the first time since the season ended.

"I don't have any regrets," he said in an interview with the Fox Business Network. "I believe everything happens for a reason. I don't know what my future holds, but I know who holds my future and in that there is a lot of peace and a lot of comfort."

So where will Tebow Go?

Re: NFL Discussion Thread - Wildcard Weekend

Browns Hire Rob Chudzinski for Head Coach:

Rob Chudzinski's first head coaching job will be with the team he loved as a kid.

Chudzinski, who spent the past two seasons as Carolina's offensive coordinator, has been hired by the Cleveland Browns as their sixth full-time coach since 1999.

The Browns are hoping the first-time head coach can end years of despair and constant losing and maybe resurrect a franchise that has made just one trip to the playoffs in the past 14 years.

"I believe we came back with the best person to lead the Cleveland Browns to the kind of winning format that we want to have in Cleveland and we all expect to have," owner Jimmy Haslam said.

More from ESPN.com

Rob Chudzinski simply wasn't the type of coach the Browns were talking about when their search to replace the fired Pat Shurmur began 11 days ago, writes Jamison Hensley. Blog

• Offseason coaching changes

Chudzinski will target former San Diego Chargers coach Norv Turner to be his offensive coordinator, a source told ESPN. Turner's son, Scott, worked for Chudzinski in Carolina.

Chudzinski will be the Browns' 14th coach in team history. For the past two years, the 44-year-old has worked with talented Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

Chudzinski has had two previous stints with the Browns as an assistant coach. He coached tight ends for Butch Davis in 2004, and then came back to the Browns in 2007 and was Cleveland's offensive coordinator for two seasons under Romeo Crennel.

Chudzinski grew up in Toledo, Ohio, where he pulled for the Browns. Chudzinski interviewed with the team on Wednesday, and was viewed by many to be a longshot for the job.

However, he wowed Haslam and CEO Joe Banner during his meeting, and the team decided to give him the job after interviewing at least eight other candidates.

"I am excited about this opportunity. I'm excited about the chance to bring back what I grew up in and the feeling that this city, this region and this area has in the Cleveland Browns," Chudzinski said Friday. "I was the kid in the backyard playing and pretending I was Ozzie Newsome, Brian Sipe or the greats that played for Cleveland. The tradition of this franchise is such that the people here want a winner. And I'm here and I would not miss this for the world the opportunity to come back and bring a winner back to Cleveland."

The Browns have been searching for a coach since firing Pat Shurmur on Dec. 31 following a 5-11 season.

Under Chudzinski, the Panthers finished fifth in total offense in 2011 and 12th last season.

Browns Go On Offensive

Cleveland ranked among the bottom four teams in the league in scoring, total offense, touchdowns and touchdown percentage the past two seasons. It's hoping Rob Chudzinski, who led the Panthers' offense the past two years, can help. Here's a look at how the Panthers and Browns compared the past two years:
Panthers Browns
PPG 23.8 16.3
Total YPG 375.3 301.5
Total TD 88 48
TD pct 24.9 12.9
-- ESPN Stats & Information

Last year, Chudzinski interviewed for head coaching jobs with St. Louis, Jacksonville and Tampa Bay before returning to Carolina.

After his first stint on Cleveland's staff, Chudzinski spent two seasons as San Diego's tight ends coach, working with perennial Pro Bowl standout Antonio Gates.

Taking over the Browns offense in 2007, Chudzinski helped the Browns win 10 games -- the most since their expansion rebirth in 1999 -- and had four players make the Pro Bowl.

However, in 2008, the Browns struggled on offense, and a six-game losing streak led to a 4-12 finish and Crennel's firing.

Chudzinski went back to the Chargers for two more seasons before he was hired in Carolina.

Before they settled on Chudzinski, the Browns interviewed several college coaches and other NFL assistants.

On Thursday, former Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt was brought to Cleveland for a second interview and appeared to be the frontrunner.

But in the end, the Browns decided to go with Chudzinski, who has no head coaching experience.

The hiring won't cause Cleveland fans to dance in the streets, but it is in keeping with Banner's past of hiring a coach without a meaty resume.

When he was in Philadelphia, Banner went outside the box and hired relatively unknown Andy Reid, who spent 14 seasons with the Eagles before he was fired after this season.

Not sure how well he will do but he could do ok.

In Pro Football Hall of Fame News:

CANTON, Ohio -- Single-season sacks leader Michael Strahan and two players who tried to block him are among 15 modern-era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Strahan, who had 22½ sacks in 2001 and 141½ for his 15-year career with the New York Giants, is joined by offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden of the Ravens and guard-tackle Larry Allen of the Cowboys and 49ers.

The fourth first-year eligible to make the cut is defensive tackle Warren Sapp of the Buccaneers and Raiders.

SportsNation: Pro Football Hall of Fame

SportsNation The 2013 Pro Football Hall of Fame nominees have been announced. Which first-timers would get your vote? Cast your votes!
• Full ballot

Strahan, Ogden and Sapp all won Super Bowls.

The Hall announced Friday that the other finalists are running back Jerome Bettis; receivers Cris Carter, Tim Brown and Andre Reed; LB-DEs Charles Haley and Kevin Greene; guard Will Shields; defensive back Aeneas Williams; coach Bill Parcells; and former owners Edward DeBartolo Jr. of the 49ers and the late Art Modell of the Browns, who moved to Baltimore in 1996 to become the Ravens.

The two senior nominees are defensive tackle Curley Culp -- who played for the Chiefs, Oilers and Lions -- and linebacker Dave Robinson of the Packers and Redskins.

Between four and seven new members will be selected Feb. 2, the day before the Super Bowl, in New Orleans.

Bettis played for the Rams and Steelers -- he won the 2006 Super Bowl in his final game, something Strahan did in 2008. He's in his third season of eligibility and was beaten out by fellow running backs Marshall Faulk in 2011 and Curtis Martin in 2012 for the Hall.

Carter, Brown and Reed all were in the top 10 in receptions when they retired. Haley won five Super Bowls, two with San Francisco and three with Dallas.

Greene was one of the first hybrid linebacker-end defenders, which best suited his pass-rushing skills.

Shields was an ironman blocker for 14 seasons in Kansas City. Williams was a versatile defensive back who played on the corner and at safety. He had 55 career interceptions and 23 fumble recoveries.

Not a bad group of players.

Flacco is not elite yet, top 7 maybe. He hasn't won the big game and has issues with NE and I believe they won that game more for Ray Lewis than anything else.

LOL, wow, the first and last time I'll bet I see that statement. That game was so obviously fixed its not even funny. How do two safeties just decide not to play either the man or the ball when Baltimore needs a touchdown to tie the game? How does John Fox not make an attempt to move the chains with one of the best QB's to ever play the game? How does that QB suddenly miss nickel coverage and throw a game-deciding interception? Someone won a lot of money yesterday but it definitely wasn't legitimate.

Oh and don't even get me started on the myriad of horrendous calls that officiating crew made. It's almost as if they came with Baltimore on the bus.

Anyhow, I'm now convinced that you may as well bet the farm on the Ravens next week, regardless of who they play. It seems clear to me that the league wants Lewis to go out on top, and they'll do any amount of fixing necessary to make that happen.

The announcers were saying that the Broncos don't run Man 2 (man to man with the safeties over the top) which would have been crazy after Torrey Smith caught the first bomb for a td. If they weren't that's just poor coaching. However, the last play to tie the game was just a piss poor play because the safety was playing deep but he broke to the ball late.

With that said I'm glad the Broncos lost. I hate John Elway. I just wanna punch him the face. I think it's the shit eating grin.
