End of the Regular Season

Larry Bird
took home his third MVP award as he pushed the Celtics to the Atlantic Division title. Bird finished with averages of 30.5 PPG, 10.5 RPG and 6.5 APG as the Celtics finished 57-25. That wasn’t enough to take the #1 seed though as the Cleveland Cavaliers, led by Kevin McHale, finished 59-23. McHale was awarded All-1st Team honors. Orlando Woolridge won the Most Improved Player Award for his role on the Cavs. The East still sport not only the strongest scorers…Tom Chambers for the Pistons ended up with 33.2, Dominique Wilkins for Chicago finished with 33.1 and Michael Jordan for Miami ended up with 31.4. The Nets, Pistons and Cavs also ended with top 5 defenses.

The Dallas Mavericks will enter the playoffs as the #1 seed and more importantly, healthy. Isiah Thomas, who led the league with 12.7 APG, was awarded with an All-NBA 1st team selection, pushing the Lakers’ Magic Johnson to the 2nd Team. Bernard King officially won the scoring title, despite only playing 50 games. Still, he, Magic and Robert Parish led the Lakers to 53 wins. Not enough for the Pacific Division crown though as the Sacramento Kings won 57 games behind Defensive Player of the Year Hakeem Olajuwon and Rookie of the Year Patrick Ewing.

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

Boston Celtics (2)

1985-1986 Record: 57-25 (18-11, 16-6, 23-8)
Key Players: Larry Bird (30.5 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 6.5 APG, 1.7 SPG, 51.7% FG, 93.8% FT, 37.2% 3P), Larry Nance (18.9 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 1 SPG, 1.8 BPG, 50.4% FG), Purvis Short (18.5 PPG, 6.2 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Larry Bird locked up his third MVP as the Celtics edged out the Nets for the Atlantic Division. Boston will take on the Hawks in Round 1. By getting the #2 seed they avoided Chicago, who has gotten the better of Boston in the playoffs the last two seasons.

New Jersey Nets (4)
1985-1986 Record: 56-26 (20-8, 15-7, 21-11)
Key Players: Sidney Moncrief (20.5 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 5 APG, 3 SPG, 47.8% FG, 80% FT), Calvin Natt (16.9 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 1 SPG, 48.4% FG), Cliff Robinson (18.2 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 1.3 SPG, 1.3 BPG), Moses Malone (14.1 PPG, 11.1 RPG, 1.1 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The Celtics caught the Nets during the last two weeks of the season to take the Atlantic Division. This makes the Nets’ playoff route to the Finals a bit more difficult as they’ll play ‘Nique and the Bulls. The Nets’ defense may prove to be good enough against anyone.

Miami Heat (6)
1985-1986 Record: 53-29 (19-7, 10-12, 25-10)
Key Players: Michael Jordan (31.4 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 6.4 APG, 2.5 SPG, 56% FG), Sam Perkins (15.9 PPG, 8.3 RPG), Xavier McDaniel (13.8 PPG, 7.1 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The Heat were close, but they couldn’t quite win the Atlantic. Michael Jordan leads the Heat into a matchup with the Pistons. While it seems Detroit has all the weapons in the world to throw at the Heat, the Heat have Michael Jordan so this could go either way.

Baltimore Bullets (8)
1985-1986 Record: 35-47 (11-17, 12-9, 12-21)
Key Players: Alex English (24 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 4 APG, 1 SPG), Sam Bowie (13.0 PPG, 10 RPG, 2.3 BPG), Eddie Johnson (18.7 PPG, 7.4 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The Alex English experiment is not looking good early on…but the Jazz couldn’t keep up with the Bullets and Baltimore will get to see their first taste of playoff basketball since 1973, before they moved to Washington for a decade.

New York Knicks
1985-1986 Record: 25-57 (10-18, 4-17, 11-22)
Key Players: Micheal Ray Richardson: (56 G, 20.8 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 9.5 APG, 1.7 SPG), David Thompson (18.6 PPG, 5.1 RPG), Antonie Carr (15.5 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 49.9% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Knicks were perhaps the biggest disappointment in the Eastern Conference. Thoughts of returning to the NBA Finals were dashed quickly as David Thompson looks to have lost several steps and Micheal Ray Richardson missed almost 30 games. Time to start over in New York, which they began with the Mark Eaton trade.

Philadelphia 76ers
1985-1986 Record: 20-62 (3-24, 10-10, 7-28)
Key Players: Manute Bol (4.6 BPG), Maurice Cheeks (15.8 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 6.2 APG, 1.9 SPG)

At least this time, the Sixers have their own draft pick and have the top odds. The championship era led by Dr. J feels like so long ago.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Cleveland Cavaliers (1)

1985-1986 Record: 59-23 (21-7, 16-6, 22-10)
Key Players: Kevin McHale (23.6 PPG, 11.5 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 3.3 BPG, 50.4% FG) Orlando Woolridge (18.5 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 54.1% FG), Rolando Blackman (19.5 PPG, 6.1 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Kevin McHale, Orlando Woolridge, and Rolando Blackman proved to be a strong scoring trio, while McHale’s defense has the Cavs near the top. This could be Cleveland’s chance to bring a championship back to the city, the first in over 20 years.

Detroit Pistons (3)
1985-1986 Record: 56-26 (22-7, 12-8, 22-11)
Key Players: Tom Chambers (33.2 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 49.8% FG), Michael Cooper (15.4 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 4.7 APG, 2.4 SPG, 1.2 BPG), Fat Lever (11.4 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 10.2 APG, 2.1 SPG), Dennis Johnson (14.9 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 4.1 APG, 2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Tom Chambers was unstoppable all season. While the Pistons fell short of the Central crown the Pistons looked formidable all season with Chambers’ scoring, Fat Lever’s playmaking and Michael Cooper and Dennis Johnson. The Pistons will have a tough 1st round matchup against Michael Jordan and the Heat.

Chicago Bulls (5)
1985-1986 Record: 54-28 (17-12, 17-3, 20-14)
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (33.1 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 1.6 SPG, 54.2% FG), Terry Cummings (19.8 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.0 SPG), Vinnie Johnson (15.6 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3.8 APG, 1.6 SPG), Johnny Moore (9.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 9.3 APG, 1.9 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Bulls were one game away from the NBA Championship last season. There’s only one way to improve, although they likely have to overcome home court disadvantage every series.

Atlanta Hawks (7)
1985-1986 Record: 48-34 (15-14, 10-8, 23-12)
Key Players: Bill Laimbeer (16.0 PPG, 10.9 RPG, 2 BPG), Karl Malone (15.0 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 52.2% FG), Mark Aguirre (57 G, 16.5 PPG, 5.5 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The Hawks looked strong down the stretch. Mark Aguirre and Bill Laimbeer have plenty of playoff experience, and rookie Karl Malone will likely give Boston some trouble.

New Orleans Jazz
1985-1986 Record: 32-50 (9-18, 11-11, 12-21)
Key Players: Charles Barkley (16.8 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 1.5 SPG, 48.7% FG), Jeff Malone (16.1 PPG), Detlef Schrempf (15.5 PPG, 6.2 RPG)
Big Moves: None

While the Jazz missed out on the playoffs, this ended up being the best season in their history so far. This was the first time they surpassed 20 (and 30) wins. The Jazz will continue to build on the Barkley, Malone, and Schrempf foundation.

Indiana Pacers
1985-1986 Record: 23-59 (13-16, 3-17, 7-26)
Key Players: James Edwards (14.8 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.2 BPG), James Bailey (13.7 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.6 BPG)
Big Moves: None

New era begins in Indiana.

Milwaukee Bucks
1985-1986 Record: 23-59 (11-19, 4-18, 8-22)
Key Players: Marques Johnson (17.6 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 1.5 SPG), Walter Davis (14.7 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 4.3 APG, 1.4 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The big question for the Bucks is what will they do with Marques Johnson in the off-season.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Dallas Mavericks (1)

1985-1986 Record: 63-19 (16-11, 18-2, 29-6)
Key Players: James Worthy (21.8 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 1.2 BPG, 52.8% FG), Isiah Thomas (20.3 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 12.7 APG, 2.7 SPG), Ralph Sampson (20.8 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 2 BPG, 54.8% FG)
Big Moves: None

Last season a late Isiah Thomas injury cost Dallas a chance at the NBA Finals. This year Isiah played like a MVP candidate and led the Mavericks to a 63 win season and the #1 seed. This is Dallas’ chance. There is no better trio than Isiah, Sampson, and Worthy.

Spirits of St. Louis (4)
1985-1986 Record: 46-36 (9-16, 14-8, 23-12)
Key Players: Dale Ellis (23 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 48.8% FG, 38.9% 3P), Alvin Robertson (18.3 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 6.4 APG, 2 SPG), Buck Williams (19.5 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 56.4% FG), Mark Eaton (9.1 RPG, 3.7 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The Spirits look for real. After a dreadful 1-14 start, the Spirits proved to be one of the best teams in the West since. Unfortunately, they’ll take on the young Trail Blazers without Alvin Robertson.

Houston Rockets (7)
1985-1986 Record: 40-42 (11-15, 9-13, 20-14)
Key Players: Kelly Tripucka (21.5 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.2 SPG), Ricky Pierce (23.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG), Darrell Griffith (18 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 1.8 SPG), Jack Sikma (13.6 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 3.1 APG, 1.5 BPG)
Big Moves: None

A solid finish locked up a playoff spot for the Rockets. The Rockets have to tighten up one of the worst defenses in the league if they want a chance to take down the Kings in Round 1.

Salt Lake Stallions (8)
1985-1986 Record: 39-43 (17-11, 8-14, 14-18)
Key Players: Adrian Dantley (27.9 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 1 SPG) Reggie Theus (20.0 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 5.5 APG, 1.6 SPG, 49.8% FG)
Big Moves: None

It wasn’t the strongest run, but the Stallions nabbed a playoff berth. The Dantley-Theus combo can score with anyone, but it’s quite the hill to take down Dallas.

San Antonio Spurs
1985-1986 Record: 21-26 (13-13, 8-13, 11-24)
Key Players: George Gervin (17.6 PPG, 4.9 RPG), Brad Davis (15.5 PPG, 7.4 APG, 1.6 SPG)
Big Moves: None

A late Brad Davis injury sunk the Spurs. Their biggest concern quite frankly is Iceman’s contract. Still three more years at over $2,000,000 each year remain.

Denver Nuggets
1985-1986 Record: 13-34 (6-20, 7-14, 9-26)
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (15.7 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 1 BPG), John Drew (16.5 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.4 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Denver has two top draft picks this off-season. Hitting them will determine if Denver can get back to their winning ways.

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Sacramento Kings (2)

1985-1986 Record: 57-25 (23-5, 10-12, 24-8)
Key Players: Hakeem Olajuwon (19 PPG, 11.5 RPG, 2 SPG, 3.1 BPG, 53.2% FG), Patrick Ewing (21 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 1.9 BPG, 50.4% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Kings are way ahead of schedule. Hitting two straight #1 picks with players the caliber of Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing will do that. The Kings won a NBA title when they were from Rochester in 1951. 35 years later they look primed to make a run.

Los Angeles Lakers (3)
1985-1986 Record: 53-29 (15-15, 18-3, 20-11)
Key Players: Magic Johnson (18.8 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 10.4 APG, 1.8 SPG, 51.2% FG, 85.9% FT), Bernard King (50 G, 34.2 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 3.4 APG, 1.3 SPG, 57.4% FG), Robert Parish (18.0 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 1.3 BPG)
Big Moves: None

Oddly, this feels like Bernard King’s team, even though Magic kept it afloat early on. Still, with the #3 seed, the Lakers look to make their fourth straight Finals…and to win their third straight NBA title.

Portland Trail Blazers (5)
1985-1986 Record: 45-37 (12-15, 13-8, 20-12)
Key Players: Chris Mullin (16.5 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.6 SPG), Byron Scott (16.4 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 3.7 APG, 1.9 SPG), Otis Thorpe (12.4 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 54.9% FG)
Big Moves: None

These young Trail Blazers are ahead of schedule. Led by rookie Chris Mullin, Portland gets to face a hobbled St. Louis team.

Golden State Warriors (6)
1985-1986 Record: 42-40 (16-13, 10-12, 16-15)
Key Players: Kiki Vandeweghe (26.1 PPG, 5.3 RPG), Andrew Toney (22.1 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 4.3 APG, 1.2 SPG), Darryl Dawkins (15.4 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 51.5% FG), John Stockton (14.5 PPG, 9.2 APG, 2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Lakers and Warriors will face off for the third time in three years in the playoffs, only this time it’s in Round 1. The Warriors nearly shocked the Lakers last year, forcing LA into a seven game series. The Warriors have the weapons to beat LA, but can they actually get the job done?

San Diego Clippers
1985-1986 Record: 35-47 (14-13, 7-14, 14-20)
Key Players: Otis Birdsong (25.9 PPG, 5 RPG, 3.9 APG, 2 SPG), Wayne Cooper (13 PPG, 11.3 RPG, 2.2 BPG), Doc Rivers (17 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 7.9 APG, 1.5 SPG), Jawann Oldham (10 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 1.6 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The last season in San Diego proved to be a disappointing one, but at least the Clippers have Otis Birdsong to lead them into the Anaheim era.

Phoenix Suns
1985-1986 Record: 29-53 (12-15, 8-13, 9-25)
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (24.3 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 48.9% FG), Mike Woodson (15 PPG, 4 RPG, 2.3 SPG), Craig Hodges (14.4 PPG, 1.2 SPG), Kevin Willis (12.0 PPG, 8.7 RPG)
Big Moves: None

A huge disappointment here after their Conference Final run last season. At least the Suns have a top 10 pick to add to the roster.

Seattle Supersonics
1985-1986 Record: 22-60 (8-21, 5-17, 9-22)
Key Players: Ray Williams (14 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 5.8 APG, 1.7 SPG), Steve Stipanovich (13.1 PPG, 8.5 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The Sonics do end up with a high pick as they own Indiana’s selection.

1/25 – MAVERICKS 107, Stallions 105
3/22 – STALLIONS 102, Mavericks 92

Series Preview

The NBA playoffs get underway as the top seeded powerhouse Dallas Mavericks take on the Salt Lake Stallions. Dallas is led by the trio of Isiah Thomas, James Worthy and Ralph Sampson, each who made an All-NBA team this season. Isiah specifically was fantastic, and was the RDT MVP. The Stallions are led by Adrian Dantley and Reggie Theus. Their scoring prowess will have to exploit an average Mavericks’ defense. Dantley has looked to make another run in the playoffs ever since Salt Lake’s Conference Finals run six years ago. Dallas is looking to bounce back after a disappointing playoff run last season without Isiah.

2/15 – SPIRITS 113, Trail Blazers 83

Series Preview
The Spirits built upon last season’s unexpected playoff appearance with a top 4 seed and homecourt advantage for Round 1 in this year’s playoffs. Their opponents are the youngest team in the league in the Portland Trail Blazers. Portland has eleven players two are in their third year as a professional or less. They are led by rookie Chris Mullin and three-point specialist and scorer Byron Scott. The Spirits are led by Dale Ellis, one of the league’s best three-point gunners himself, and free agent signing Buck Williams, who adds championship experience from his runs with the Lakers. The Spirits are missing the versatile Alvin Robertson, out for the series with a dislocated shoulder (he may be able to return for Game 5). Rookie Joe Dumars will likely start for him. This should be an interesting one.

2/22 – KINGS 115, Rockets 105

Series Preview
The towering twin Kings of Sacramento look to continue their dream season against the Rockets. Houston has played Sacramento quite well during the season. Houston does have a lot of talent. There are plenty of players who can score for Houston and if they can go off an upset will be right there for the taking. If Defensive Player of the Year Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing control the paint on both sides of the ball though, the Rockets won’t have much of a chance. It’ll be Jack Sikma and LaSalle Thompson’s job. Sacramento guards Danny Ainge, Terry Porter and Sedale Threatt will be asked to make sure Darrell Griffith, Ricky Pierce and Kelly Tripucka don’t find ways to win the game for Houston. The Houston crowd will likely be hot, as Kings’ Head Coach Del Harris returns.

1/4 – LAKERS 108, Warriors 95
3/21 – WARRIORS 115, Lakers 80

Series Preview
This is the third straight season that the Lakers and Warriors meet. Last season the Warriors pushed the eventual NBA Champion Lakers to Game 7 in the Western Conference Semi-Finals before the Lakers pulled out an insane 151-147 victory. Each team looks a bit different. The Warriors still sport a talent team led by Kik Vandeweghe, Darryl Dawkins, Andrew Toney, and John Stockton, with playoff tested Danny Schayes as well. The Lakers lost a couple of stars, but went all-in to win their third straight title by adding Robert Parish to the team. There’s been some mixed results in LA as injuries to Magic Johnson, Parish, and Bernard King held them back, but they’re all healthy at the moment. The Warriors played the Lakers well during the season, can they end the Lakers’ run on top of the West? To do so they’ll likely have to outscore the Lakers…the Warriors had the 24th ranked defense in basketball.

3/21 – CAVS 103, Bullets 88
3/26 – Cavs 105, BULLETS 102

Series Preview
The Bullets made a mid-season move to grab this playoff spot, which technically worked. Despite adding Alex English though, Baltimore will likely have a difficult time against the Cavs. This is the best Cavs team we may have ever seen, with Kevin McHale playing like a MVP candidate and Orlando Woolridge and Rolando Blackman going off every other night. Woolridge has shown to be the third scorer the Cavs lacked in prior years. The Bullets have some interesting pieces. One is English, who if he can be vintage English will be someone Cleveland has to stop. Sam Bowie had a good year as well. Eddie Johnson having a good series will help Baltimore’s chances. But still, it would be surprising if we didn’t get a Cleveland sweep here.

Series Preview
Both of these teams have had championship aspirations for a couple of years now. The Nets have come off back-to-back disappointing playoff runs despite adding one of the greatest players of all-time in Moses Malone and perhaps the best defensive point guard in the game in Sidney Moncrief. The Nets were looking at a third straight Atlantic Division title before Boston caught up to them at the end. That has led to a much tougher 1st round match-up as they face Dominique Wilkins and the Chicago Bulls. ‘Nique had the Bulls in Game 7 of the NBA Finals last season, where they fell to the Lakers. The Central division was as tough as ever as the 54-win Bulls ended up 3rd in the division. Still, despite being at a home court handicap it’s hard to rule out ‘Nique and the Bulls. It’s the battle of the top ranked defense against the scoring machine Wilkins. One of these teams will go home very early in a season with championship aspirations.

Series Preview
With Larry Bird locking up a third MVP award, the Celtics have looked like the East’s best team down the stretch. They finished the season 17-1 and with a 37-4 home record. Larry Nance has added a new dimension to the Celtics this season with his exciting, high flying play. The Hawks have been in the midst of their own comeback season. Bill Laimbeer and Karl Malone are perhaps the most physical frontcourt in the league and Mark Aguirre also provides solid scoring from the small forward position. Can they bother Bird and Nance enough to pull off an upset? It’s gonna be tough.

Series Preview

This season is a tale of two unstoppable scorers: Detroit’ Tom Chambers and Miami’s Michael Jordan. The Pistons have two elite defensive wings to throw at MJ in Michael Cooper and Dennis Johnson, while Sam Perkins and Xavier McDaniel will be tasked to slow down Chambers. Fat Lever has transformed into an elite playmaker who almost averaged a triple-double this season, and that’s something that Johnny Moore will need to figure out. This is a battle of the two best offenses in the league, which isn’t surprising as it involved Chambers and MJ. Detroit is also missing starting center Benoit Benjamin, which may help MJ. Like Chicago-New Jersey, this is a match-up of two teams with championship aspirations where one will end up very disappointed.

(All Box Scores to be added after the end of the season)

Game 1 - #8 Salt Lake Stallions at #1 Dallas Mavericks

In the aftermath of Game 1, mixed feelings swept through the Dallas Mavericks' camp as they secured a victory but suffered a major blow. The team's jubilation at triumphing was tinged with worry as their star center, Ralph Sampson, sustained a serious foot injury late in the first quarter, fracturing a bone that could see him sidelined for a month.

Despite the loss of Sampson, the Mavericks demonstrated their resilience and depth, cruising to a win backed by stellar performances from their key players. James Worthy led the charge, delivering an impressive stat line of 28 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists. Gerald Henderson and Jerome Kersey stepped up in Sampson's absence, each contributing over 20 points to the team's total. Isiah Thomas added to the mix with a double-double of 19 points and 15 assists, along with 4 steals, further cementing the Mavericks' dominance in Game 1.

However, the looming absence of Sampson could potentially pose a significant threat to Dallas's playoff run. His projected recovery time of about a month raises questions about the team's ability to maintain their winning momentum in the face of such adversity.

On the other side, despite suffering a loss in Game 1, the Salt Lake Stallions saw a glimmer of hope. Adrian Dantley led the team with a strong 27-point performance. While the Stallions fell short in this match, the unfortunate injury to Sampson potentially swings the door wide open for them to seize control and advance in the series.

MAVERICKS 130, Stallions 106 (Mavericks lead 1-0)

Stallions Stats
Adrian Dantley: 27 PTS, 4 REB, 12/17 FG

Game 1 - #5 Portland Trail Blazers at #4 St. Louis Spirits

Despite a valiant effort from the youthful Trail Blazers, the St. Louis Spirits emerged victorious in Game 1, largely thanks to a stellar performance from Buck Williams. Williams dominated the court, putting up a double-double with a whopping 23 points and 20 rebounds.

Dale Ellis, despite a less than impressive shooting performance, managed to contribute significantly to the Spirits' victory, ending the game with a solid double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ellis' ability to contribute despite his shooting struggles is a testament to his overall game and the depth of the Spirits' roster.

For the Trail Blazers, the game was marked by disappointment as rookie Chris Mullin, making his NBA playoff debut, struggled to find his shooting rhythm. Mullin managed to score only 10 points on 14 attempts, a far cry from the performances that have made him one of the Trail Blazers' key players.

Otis Thorpe led Portland with 20 points along with seven rebounds. Despite Thorpe's efforts, the Trail Blazers were unable to keep pace with the Spirits, signaling a need for improvement and consistency as the series progresses.

There was excitement all over the city of St. Louis as this was their first basketball playoff victory in 35 years.

SPIRITS 99, Trail Blazers 90 (Spirits lead 1-0)

Trail Blazers Stats
Otis Thorpe: 20 PTS, 7 REB, 4 BLK

Spirits Stats
Buck Williams: 23 PTS, 20 REB, 1 STL, 1 BLK

Game 1 - #7 Houston Rockets at #2 Sacramento Kings

In an emphatic display of skill and dominance, Hakeem Olajuwon led the Kings to a crushing victory over the Rockets. His overwhelming presence on both ends of the court was a sight to behold, as he concluded the night with a sterling stat line of 25 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and a staggering 6 blocks.

From the outset, the Kings were in full control, racing to a 35-13 lead in the first quarter and maintaining their dominance throughout the game. Olajuwon's performance was complemented by Patrick Ewing, who chipped in with an impressive 24 points, further solidifying the Kings' command over the game.

On the other side of the court, the Rockets appeared disoriented and struggled to find their footing. Kelly Tripucka emerged as their leading scorer with 26 points, but it required him 25 attempts - a clear indication of the Rockets' offensive struggles.

KINGS 116, Rockets 83 (Kings lead 1-0)

Game 1 - #6 Golden State Warriors at #3 Los Angeles Lakers

Lakers-Warriors kicked off with a commanding Lakers victory, led by a big performance from Bernard King and an exemplary showing by Magic Johnson. Despite a strong offensive effort from Golden State's trio of Darryl Dawkins, Kiki Vandeweghe, and Andrew Toney, the Warriors were unable to match the Lakers' intensity and fell behind considerably, resulting in a 127-103 loss.

King put on a scoring clinic, dropping a whopping 42 points and dishing out six assists. Magic added a triple-double of 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 assists, demonstrating once again his crucial role in the Lakers' offensive machinery.

The Warriors witnessed 20+ point performances from Dawkins, Vandeweghe, and Toney, but the offensive firepower was insufficient to counter the Lakers' onslaught. Vandeweghe had an efficient shooting night, making 10 of 13 attempts, yet it was not enough to bridge the gap.

Robert Parish played a pivotal role for the Lakers, contributing a 17-12 double-double along with 2 steals and 2 blocks. His presence on both ends of the court further solidified the Lakers' dominance, proving that even without a high scoring night, his defensive efforts could make a significant impact.

LAKERS 127, Warriors 103 (Lakers lead 1-0)

Warriors Stats
Andrew Toney: 23 PTS, 3 REB
Darryl Dawkins: 22 PTS, 4 REB

Game 1 - #8 Baltimore Bullets at #1 Cleveland Cavaliers

Game 1 of the playoff series between the Baltimore Bullets and the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers saw Kevin McHale take charge, steering the Cavs to a decisive victory. McHale's 32-point performance underpinned Cleveland's dominance, leaving the Bullets scrambling for answers.

Baltimore's Sam Bowie attempted to slow down the potent frontcourt of McHale and Orlando Woolridge with his shot-blocking prowess, managing to swat away 6 shots. However, the Cavaliers' dynamic duo still shot a combined 22-39, a testament to their efficiency and scoring ability.

The Bullets were not without their standout performers. Alex English put up a strong double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Eddie Johnson led Baltimore's scoring with 26 points and added 10 rebounds. Despite these commendable individual performances, the Bullets fell short of the mark, losing the game 100-86.

Woolridge complemented McHale's performance with a solid 23-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Rolando Blackman chipped in with 15 points and 8 rebounds, highlighting the depth of the Cavaliers' roster.

With the Cavaliers leading the series 1-0, the Bullets will need to regroup and find a way to neutralize the threat posed by McHale and Woolridge. As for the Cavaliers, they will aim to maintain their momentum and extend their series lead in the upcoming games.

Game 1 - #5 Chicago Bulls at #4 New Jersey Nets

When the playoff lights come on, Dominique Wilkins shines brightest. This held true as 'Nique unleashed a dazzling 45-point performance against the New Jersey Nets in Game 1, helping the Chicago Bulls to seize the home court advantage with an impressive victory.

In what was a fiercely contested game, the Bulls kept their noses ahead, managing to hold on for a five-point victory. Terry Cummings made a significant impact for Chicago, racking up 14 points and a whopping 17 rebounds, effectively neutralizing the threat of New Jersey's Moses Malone, who could only muster 10 points and 6 rebounds.

The Nets found their leading scorer in Cliff Robinson, who dropped 22 points and secured 10 rebounds. Despite the loss, his performance gives the Nets a glimmer of hope as they seek to find a solution to the 'Nique conundrum.

The stakes are high for the Nets now, who not only need to figure out how to halt Wilkins' scoring onslaught but also secure at least one road win to prevent a third consecutive playoff disappointment.

The Bulls, leading the series 1-0, will be looking to continue their momentum into the next game, with Wilkins undoubtedly set to continue his scoring spree.

Game 1 - #7 Atlanta Hawks at #2 Boston Celtics

Larry Bird
started off the 1986 playoffs in a blaze of glory, scorching the Atlanta Hawks with an exquisite 40-point performance in the Boston Celtics' Game 1 victory. Bird added 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 6 steals to his tally, a feat made all the more remarkable by the fact that he only attempted 22 field goals and drained 4 shots from beyond the arc. The Hawks could find no response to Bird's mesmerizing play.

The Hawks' offense was spearheaded by Eddie Johnson, who posted 19 points. However, his solo efforts could not match the Celtics' dominant performance.

The Celtics clinched the victory with a 14-point margin, securing the lead in the series. Alongside Bird, Purvis Short and Larry Nance made notable contributions. Short provided 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Nance added 16 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 blocks to the Celtics' tally.

The Hawks will need to regroup and find a way to counter Bird's scoring prowess if they want to bounce back in the series.

Game 1 - #6 Miami Heat at #3 Detroit Pistons

In a clash that demanded exceptional performances from all team members, the Detroit Pistons managed to stifle Michael Jordan and the Miami Heat in the opening game of the series. Michael Cooper emerged as a key contributor for Detroit, notching 26 points, a major boost especially as Tom Chambers struggled to find his rhythm, amassing only 11 points (1/3rd of his regular season average).

While Cooper shone on offense, he also proved his worth on the defensive end, combining forces with Dennis Johnson to contain Jordan. Although MJ managed to score 36 points, his shooting was less efficient than usual, making only 15 of his 33 attempts.

Despite Jordan's herculean effort - 36 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 8 steals - the Heat couldn't overcome the Pistons' well-rounded performance. Fat Lever also had an outstanding game for the Pistons, registering a triple-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 13 assists.

As the Pistons take the lead in the series, the Heat will need to find ways to outmaneuver Detroit's tight defense and share the load more evenly in the upcoming games.

PISTONS 113, Heat 105 (Pistons lead 1-0)

Heat Stats
Michael Jordan: 36 PTS, 8 REB, 6 AST, 8 STL

Game 2 - #8 Salt Lake Stallions at #1 Dallas Mavericks (Mavericks lead 1-0)

Even with Ralph Sampson on the sidelines, the Dallas Mavericks stepped up their game, managing to match the Salt Lake Stallions stride for stride through the first three quarters of Game 2. The real difference-maker was the Mavericks' explosive 41-point 4th quarter, which ultimately clinched their victory and extended their series lead to 2-0.

Isiah Thomas put on a spectacular performance for the Mavericks, tallying 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 17 assists, while James Worthy contributed a solid 28 points. Thurl Bailey, filling in for the injured Sampson, also made a considerable impact in his 35-minute playtime, delivering a commendable 19-point, 12-rebound performance.

The Stallions once again found their top performers in Adrian Dantley and Reggie Theus. However, with Sampson's absence from the Mavericks' lineup, the Stallions need more from Tree Rollins, Herb Williams, and Dan Roundfield if they hope to compete in this series. Of the three, only Williams showed some spark with a 15-point contribution.

MAVERICKS 121, Stallions 112 (Mavericks lead 2-0)

Game 2 - #5 Portland Trail Blazers at #4 St. Louis Spirits (Spirits lead 1-0)

In a dominant display of teamwork, Buck Williams and Dale Ellis made a formidable combo for the St. Louis Spirits in Game 2, amassing a staggering 64 points between them from 26/34 FGs. Their relentless attack left the Portland Trail Blazers reeling, unable to respond effectively despite Oscar Schmidt's team-leading 19 points.

Mark Eaton's towering presence was another standout for the Spirits, adding an impressive 7 blocks to the scorecard. His defensive prowess undoubtedly played a significant role in stifling the Trail Blazers' offensive attempts.

With the Spirits now leading the series 2-0, the pressure is on the Trail Blazers to recalibrate and strike back in their home court at Portland.

SPIRITS 111, Trail Blazers 92 (Spirits lead 2-0)

Game 2 - #7 Houston Rockets at #2 Sacramento Kings (Kings lead 1-0)

The spotlight was firmly on rookie Patrick Ewing as he led the Sacramento Kings to victory in a tight defensive encounter against the Houston Rockets. Ewing's impressive 26-point, 20-rebound performance highlighted the game, showcasing his formidable talent on both ends of the court.

The Rockets adopted a strategy focusing on three-point attempts, a relatively unconventional approach in 1986. However, their long-range game failed to deliver, with only 3 successful attempts out of 20.

Kelly Tripucka gave a spirited performance for the Rockets, scoring 34 points, but the lack of substantial contributions from the rest of the team (totaling 53 points) proved to be their downfall.

As the series shifts to Houston, the Rockets now face the daunting task of climbing out of a 0-2 series deficit.

KINGS 96, Rockets 87 (Kings lead 2-0)

Rockets Stats
Kelly Tripucka: 34 PTS, 14/26 FG, 3 STL

Game 2 - #6 Golden State Warriors at #3 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 1-0)

This isn’t looking like much of a rivalry. The Lakers lead at the end of each quarter: 46-21, 87-50, 118-62 and ultimately 126-83. Magic Johnson orchestrated the game with masterful control, dishing out 24 assists, primarily to Bernard King and Robert Parish who amassed 37 and 26 points respectively. The Warriors, who were led by Andrew Toney's 21 points, need to re-strategize and adjust their game plan if they aim to make this series competitive.

As the series stands, the Lakers have taken a commanding 2-0 lead. The Warriors face an uphill battle moving forward, with the need for drastic improvements in their gameplay to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Bullets were propelled to their 94-83 victory by impressive performances from Alex English and Eddie Johnson, who scored 36 and 30 points respectively.

Kevin McHale, while displaying all-around prowess for the Cavs with 15 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 blocks, struggled in scoring, managing only 11 points. went off once again, but the Nets wouldn’t give up and we had a game go down to the wire.

The Nets took the lead off a Cliff Robinson layup, 93-92, with 7:40 left. Chicago and New Jersey would trade buckets for the next few minutes, with Terry Cummings scoring with 4:12 left to put the Bulls up 98-97. Terry Catledge responds from NJ’s bench to score and give the Nets back a one point lead. Vinnie Johnson hit a free throw to tie it at 99. Calvin Natt scores, and Marc Iavorini gets a steal to give the Nets their biggest lead since the first quarter, 103-99. Johnson hits another basket, but Iavorini continues to play huge minutes as he ends up on the receiving end of an alley-oop!

‘Nique has had enough and hits a jumper from the free throw line to cut the lead to two with 2:55 left. The Bulls fail to take advantage of a turnover caused by Andre Wakefield, and Marc Iavaroni ends up getting a huge offensive rebound into a dunk! Nets lead 107-103 with 1:27 left. The Bulls eventually make it 107-15 due to a Terry Cummings jumper…and ‘Nique silences the New Jersey crowd with a huge jam to tie the game at 107 with 34 seconds left!

Sidney Moncrief breaks a Bulls full court press and gets a quick dunk of his own! Cummings quickly scores again, making it 109-109 with just 25 seconds left. Moncrief tries to find a way to finish off the game, and he gets fouled by Wilkins with just 7 seconds left! Moncrief then makes a great play as he steals a pass from ‘Nique, and one more free throw finishes off the Bulls.

‘Nique had another 45, but the balanced Nets attack was too much for the Bulls to handle. Chicago still has home court as the series is tied 1-1 heading to Chicago.

Game 2 - #7 Atlanta Hawks at #2 Boston Celtics (Celtics lead 1-0)

In a thrilling, down-to-the-wire showdown, the Hawks staged a massive late-game surge, blasting through with a 7-0 run to snatch a 122-121 lead with just over two minutes remaining, capped by a thunderous dunk from Karl Malone. However, the Celtics, led by the ever-reliable Larry Bird, were not to be denied. Bird, showcasing his impeccable court vision, found Larry Nance for a critical layup, thrusting the Celtics back into the lead, a lead they would stubbornly cling to, securing their victory in Game 2.

Malone had a golden opportunity to turn the tide in favor of the Hawks, but Larry Smith emerged at the crucial moment, executing a pivotal block that kept the Celtics in the driver's seat. The final nail in the Hawks' coffin was a swift steal by Gus Williams, sealing the deal for the Celtics.

Larry Bird was once again the star of the show, delivering a sensational performance, pouring in 44 points, pulling down 8 rebounds, dishing out 10 assists, and swiping 3 steals, proving once again why he's one of the game's greats. The Celtics' firepower was further bolstered by Purvis Short and Larry Nance, who added 28 and 26 points respectively.

Despite Bill Laimbeer's career-defining game that featured a staggering 27 points and a monstrous 23 rebounds, it proved insufficient to tip the balance in the Hawks' favor. As the dust settled, the Hawks were left facing a daunting 0-2 deficit as they head back to their home court in Atlanta.

Game 2 - #6 Miami Heat at #3 Detroit Pistons (Pistons lead 1-0)

In Game 2, the Detroit Pistons unleashed an offensive onslaught, racking up a staggering 144 points. The driving forces behind this onslaught were Tom Chambers, who erupted for an incredible 51 points, and Fat Lever, who put on a masterful all-round performance with 17 points, 13 rebounds, 20 assists, and 7 steals. This formidable display handed the Pistons a commanding 2-0 series lead against Michael Jordan and the Miami Heat.

Not to be overshadowed, Jordan, the embodiment of relentless drive, kept the Heat firmly in contention for the Game 2 victory, producing a dazzling display of his own. He racked up 41 points, yanked down 13 rebounds, dished out 4 assists, and added 3 steals and 3 blocks to his tally. Despite his best efforts, however, the Heat fell short of clinching the victory.

As the buzzer sounded, the reality of a daunting 0-2 deficit settled over Miami. Heading back home, the Heat now face the challenge of turning the tide in their favor as the series continues. Jordan, ever the competitor, would surely have preferred a victory to his impressive stats. The stage is set for a potentially epic comeback as the series moves to Miami.

Game 3 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #8 Salt Lake Stallions (Mavericks lead 2-0)

The Stallions refused to give up in Game 3. With James Worthy going off, the Stallions found a way to take a lead into the 4th quarter. Still, the Mavericks managed to take a five-point lead after a Thurl Bailey hook with 28 seconds left. Salt Lake’s Danny Young gets a quick lay-up to cut the lead to 113-110. Isiah Thomas shockingly misses two free throws. Reggie Theus finds Young, who hits the game-tying three as time expires to take the game to overtime!

The Stallions would score five points in the first 1:15 of overtime…and that would be enough! The Mavericks would run out of gas and only manage four points themselves. The game was 118-117 with 1:15 left, and each team would fail to score. Isiah had a chance to win it with a three himself, but it missed. There will be a Game 4. Dallas wasted a 48-point James Worthy and a 22-20 game from Isiah. Danny Young had the biggest game of his young career, scoring 27 to lead the Stallions, including the final five clutch points in regulation.

Game 3 - #4 St. Louis Spirits at #5 Portland Trail Blazers (Spirits lead 2-0)

The Spirits grab the lead on a lay-up from Buck Williams, going up 107-106 with 3:05 left. Darrell Walker, having an excellent game as he tries to keep Portland alive, finds Chris Mullin to give Portland back the lead. Rookie Joe Dumars misses, but makes up for that with a steal off a pass from Oscar Schmidt. Each team locks the other up until 1:46 left when St. Louis’ Derek Smith gives St. Louis a 109-108 lead with 1:46 left.

Portland gets a few chances, but fail to convert. Otis Thorpe misses a bunny. Thorpe misses another jumper with 26 seconds left. Jon Koncak gets the last chance for Portland, but the Trail Blazers fail to score since 2:55 left in the 4th, and the Spirits complete the sweep.

While making the playoffs at all had to be considered a victory for the Trail Blazers, there has to be some disappointment as the Spirits were missing Alvin Robertson for the series. Still, things are looking up for Portland. On the other hand St. Louis, in only their third season, advance to the Western Conference Semi-Finals to face the Stallions-Mavericks winner.

For prediction purposes, Dale Ellis led the series in scoring with 80 points.

Game 3 - #2 Sacramento Kings at #7 Houston Rockets (Kings lead 2-0)

In a thrilling duel of wills, the Houston Rockets dominated the offensive boards and managed 15 more shots than the Sacramento Kings, but that wasn't enough to fend off the sweep. The Kings proved too powerful, completing a clean sweep and eliminating the Rockets from contention.

Leading the charge for the Kings, Sedale Threatt emerged from the bench like a man possessed, dropping a colossal 26 points. Patrick Ewing added a solid 23 points, while Hakeem Olajuwon crafted yet another all-around masterclass, tallying 10 points, pulling down 17 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists, swiping 2 steals, and swatting away 6 shots. The Kings will face the Lakers-Warriors victor.

Despite the Rockets' valiant efforts, led by Ricky Pierce and Jack Sikma who poured in 28 and 25 points respectively, they grappled with the issues heels that plagued them throughout the season: defense and inconsistency. Rarely did all their scorers fire on all cylinders simultaneously, a stark issue they'll need to address in the coming year.

For prediction purposes: Kelly Tripucka led the series in scoring with 79 points.

#3 Los Angeles Lakers at #6 Golden State Warriors (Lakers lead 2-0)

Game 3 of the series between the Lakers and Warriors was a momentous battle that saw the Warriors refusing to go down without a fight. They roared out of the gate, amassing a commanding 62-47 lead by halftime and never loosening their grip on the game.

Andrew Toney emerged as a game-changer from the Warriors' bench, raining down 26 points. Not far behind, Kiki Vandeweghe contributed a robust 25 points to the winning effort, while Darryl Dawkins displayed versatility with 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Despite a valiant 35-point performance from Bernard King, who hit an impressive 15 of 25 shots, the Lakers' overall output lagged, with the rest of the team managing only 27 out of 63. Magic Johnson had a respectable game with a 14-12 double-double, but Golden State's John Stockton proved a worthy adversary, tallying 15 points, 8 assists, and 3 steals, proving instrumental in keeping the Lakers at bay.

The final buzzer saw the Warriors victorious with a final score of 108-95, narrowing the Lakers' series lead to 2-1. The Warriors will aim to harness this winning momentum on home turf in the hope of leveling the series and forcing a decisive Game 5.

Game 3 - #1 Cleveland Cavaliers at #8 Baltimore Bullets (Series tied 1-1)

In Game 3 of the series between the Cavs and Bullets, the Cavs made a strong statement, re-establishing their dominance and regaining control of the series.

The Cavaliers' impeccable defense effectively neutralized the Bullets' offense. Baltimore's Alex English had to take 26 shots just to score his 28 points, and the rest of the team struggled to provide substantial support.

On the Cavaliers' side, the balance of power was far more evenly distributed. Four players - Jim Paxson, Orlando Woolridge, Rolando Blackman, and Kevin McHale - all managed to put up at least 17 points each. This collective effort paved the way for the Cavaliers' decisive victory, ending the game at 104-86 in their favor and taking a 2-1 lead in the series.

Game 3 - #4 New Jersey Nets at #5 Chicago Bulls (Series tied 1-1)

In a stunning display of defensive prowess, the Nets brought silence to the usually raucous Chicago Stadium. They held the Bulls to a meager 84 points, snatching back control of the series in an emphatic fashion.

Dominique Wilkins, a usual powerhouse for the Bulls, was kept to a relatively subdued 29 points. In contrast, the Nets saw formidable performances from their key players. Moses Malone reminded fans of his legendary status with an impressive 24-point, 16-rebound outing, shooting an efficient 8 for 11 from the field. Sidney "The Squid" Moncrief delivered a stellar all-around performance, putting up 25 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.

The final score stood at 92-84 in favor of the Nets, who took a 2-1 lead in the series. The defending Eastern Conference Champion Bulls find themselves in a precarious position, but they will at least have the comfort of home court for Game 4.

Game 3 - #2 Boston Celtics at #7 Atlanta Hawks (Celtics lead 2-0)

Game 3 in the series between the Celtics and the Hawks was a battle of resilience that pushed both teams to their limits. The Hawks held a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter, seemingly steering the game towards an easy victory. However, the Celtics, led by MVP Larry Bird, had other plans.

The Hawks stumbled midway through the fourth quarter, and the Celtics seized the opportunity to stage an impressive comeback. The turning point came with 1:15 left on the clock, when Purvis Short nailed a jumper to tie the game at 112, capping a 16-6 run by Boston.

Larry Bird, who had been delivering stellar performances throughout the series, came up clutch yet again, sinking two free throws to give the Celtics a 114-112 lead with just over a minute remaining. Mark Aguirre, Atlanta's notable trade acquisition, quickly responded with a jumper to level the score once more. But a subsequent foul sent Bird back to the free-throw line, where he was flawless, giving Boston a 116-114 lead.

With the game hanging in the balance, Eddie Johnson of the Hawks missed a potential game-tying shot and never got another opportunity. The Celtics held on to their lead, winning the game 116-114 and sweeping the series 3-0. They now advance to face the winner of the Pistons-Heat series.

Despite their loss, the Hawks displayed significant progress this season, with rookie Karl Malone showing promise as a rising star. Their return to the playoffs, though ending prematurely, offers hope for a bright future.

Game 3 - #6 Miami Heat at #3 Detroit Pistons (Pistons lead 2-0)

In an electrifying Game 3, the Detroit Pistons started strong but ultimately fell to the Miami Heat led by Michael Jordan. Despite Tom Chambers trying to replicate his Game 2 performance, he struggled from the field, managing only 23 points on a cold 10/31 shooting. The Pistons had no real offensive rhythm, their 22 offensive rebounds being the lifeline that kept them competitive.

However, they could not contain Michael Jordan. The Heat's iconic star dished out a masterful performance, posting 28 points, 7 rebounds, and 10 assists on a highly efficient 12/19 shooting. His commitment to involving his teammates helped the Heat to an impressive 50.5% shooting from the field.

The Heat's concerted team effort was evident in the contributions from Xavier McDaniel, who added 21 points and 8 rebounds, and Sam Perkins, who chipped in with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Their collective performance was enough to secure a much-needed victory, the final score being 119-110 in their favor.

With this win, the Heat have extended the series and will aim to replicate this form in Game 4 to force a deciding Game 5 in Detroit.

Game 4 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #8 Salt Lake Stallions (Mavericks lead 2-1)

Dallas got off to a hot start and the Stallions just ran out of gas in Game 4. The Mavericks caused turnover after turnover, coming up with 19 steals, and put away the Stallions in Salt Lake. Isiah Thomas was great as normal with a 22-point, 11-assist, 4-steal performance. Adrian Dantley led the Stallions with 19 points.

The Mavericks will face the red-hot Spirits in the Western Conference Finals. Ralph Sampson will not be available for the series, which will be tough for the Mavericks to handle.

The Stallions are left asking themselves the same question they’ve asked for the entire decade: how far can they go with Adrian Dantley as their guy? They’ll likely take one more shot with him as that’s all he’s under contract for.

For prediction purposes: James Worthy led the series in scoring with 121 points.

Game 4 -
#3 Los Angeles Lakers at #6 Golden State Warriors (Lakers lead 2-1)

The Warriors battled all game, coming back when it looked like it was over for them. They followed up a 14-point second quarter with a 42-point third quarter. The Warriors brought a small lead into the fourth as a result.

The Lakers and Warriors battled throughout the fourth. John Stockton hit a dagger of a three for the Warriors with 2:56 left to make it 108-107 Lakers. Magic drives by Stockton on the next play but blows the layup! Both teams fail to convert until Stockton hits a layup with 1:28 left, putting the Warriors back on top 109-108. The Lakers wind down the clock and the Warriors end up committing a foul, allowing Robert Parish to get to the line. He only makes one-of-two, still tying the game. But Parish gets his own rebound and kicks the ball out. LA looks for the very best shot, and they find it, as Bernard King hits a jumper from the free throw line to make it 111-109! Darryl Dawkins responds quickly to tie the game with 36 seconds left.

The game would end in controversy. Magic missed a shot but grabbed his own rebound, allowing the Lakers the last possession of regulation. Robert Parish looked to win the game, but he missed…and was bumped by Stockton! Oakland Arena is completely stunned with that call, and Golden State Head Coach George Karl was irate. With no time left on the clock, Parish drains the free throws, and the Lakers won the series.

The Lakers move on to play the Kings in the Western Conference Semi-Finals. The Warriors season ends in disappointment as it was thought they would perhaps make the leap this year. To have their season end for the third straight year at the hands of the Lakers only fuels that disappointment.

For prediction purposes: Bernard King led the series in scoring with 153 points.

Game 4 - Cleveland Cavaliers at #8 Baltimore Bullets (Cavaliers lead 2-1)

In Game 4, the Cavaliers showed their might, overpowering the Bullets and securing their ticket to the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. After a quiet series, Rolando Blackman emerged with an exceptional performance, pouring in a game-high 35 points. Kevin McHale continued his impressive run, contributing a significant 32 points.

While Alex English once again led the Bullets in scoring, he unfortunately needed more shots than the points he amassed. The Bullets showed promise, even managing a lead at halftime, but a staggering 63-38 second half run by the Cavaliers snuffed out their hopes of a comeback.

The Bullets will get a full season with English next year to see if they can get back to +.500 basketball. The Cavs look to win their first NBA Title in a few weeks and will meet the Nets-Bulls winner.

Game 4 - #4 New Jersey Nets at #5 Chicago Bulls (Nets lead 2-1)

In arguably a shocking result, the Nets once again beat the Bulls in Chicago Stadium, winning the series 3-1. The Nets dominated the boards, resulting in 18 more field goal attempts. Moses Malone once again looked like the old Moses with another 20-16. Calvin Natt and Sidney Moncrief also chipped in 20 apiece.

Dominique Wilkins couldn’t get going against the Nets defense. Dudley Bradley did a great job, holding ‘Nique to 22 points. Terry Cummings led Chicago with 23.

Game 4 -
#3 Detroit Pistons at #6 Miami Heat (Pistons lead 2-1)

In a surprising turn of events, the Detroit Pistons let slip a golden chance to close out the series against the Miami Heat on their home turf. Michael Jordan, the usual scoring machine, had an off-night, with a shooting efficiency that dwindled to a meager 5/21 from the field. Yet, despite Jordan's struggles, the Pistons couldn't capitalize.

Detroit's shooting performance was woefully inadequate, with an overall percentage of just 38.8%. Tom Chambers put up a valiant effort, racking up an impressive 38 points, but his individual brilliance wasn't enough to outdo Miami. The rest of the Pistons, apart from Chambers, managed a dismal 21/66 shooting performance, and the team collectively sank only 1 out of 17 attempts from behind the three-point line. It was a performance that they'd prefer to forget, a complete meltdown on their part.

On the other hand, Miami found the support they needed to secure this critical Game 4 victory, even as their main man, Jordan, struggled. Sam Perkins rose to the occasion, delivering a solid double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Clark Kellogg also contributed significantly, adding another double-double to the Heat's tally with his 21 points and 11 rebounds, stepping up as Xavier McDaniel struggled with foul trouble.

In a season where all other Round 1 match-ups have been decided, the Pistons-Heat series stands out, with the dramatic events forcing it into a decisive Game 5. The action now shifts back to Detroit, where the Pistons will have another chance to finish off the Heat, while Miami will aim to ride their momentum to clinch the series.

Game 5 - #6 Miami Heat at #3 Detroit Pistons (Series tied 2-2)

The Pistons left Michael Jordan alive and MJ killed them.

In an extraordinary display of brilliance and resilience, Michael Jordan led the Miami Heat to an epic comeback in Game 5, overturning a 0-2 series deficit to clinch a thrilling victory. Jordan was nothing short of phenomenal, pouring in 31 points, while also pulling down 12 rebounds and dishing out 7 assists.

Right from the start, the Heat were unstoppable. They erupted for an electrifying 44-point opening quarter, a blazing start that left the Detroit Pistons and the packed Pontiac Silverdome in a state of stunned silence.

Detroit's star, Tom Chambers, found himself in a tough spot as he ran into serious foul trouble against Miami's Sam Perkins and Xavier McDaniel. Despite managing to score 21 points, Chambers was limited to a mere 19 minutes on the court. On a night when the Pistons desperately needed a 40-point performance from him, Chambers was unable to deliver.

Michael Cooper of the Pistons managed to fill the stat sheet, but he was decidedly off the mark in terms of shooting, going a disappointing 3 for 14 from the field. Pistons guards Dennis Johnson and Fat Lever found themselves overwhelmed, unable to match the scintillating scoring display put up by Jordan.

The Pistons had a great season but this loss leaves them well-short of the NBA Championship. As for the Heat, this is the second straight season they came into the playoffs as the lower seed and came out on top. MJ and the Heat will take on Bird and the Celtics in what should be an incredible series.

For prediction purposes: Michael Jordan led the series in scoring with 158 points.

Series Preview
While Dallas dominated the season series, there are two variables that completely change the outlook for this series. Mavericks center Ralph Sampson will not return from his broken foot in the series. While Thurl Bailey was solid in the Round 1 series against the Stallions, Dallas will likely miss Sampson big time. As for the Spirits, Alvin Robertson will likely miss Games 1 and 2, but we may see him later in the series. The Spirits took care of the Trail Blazers without Robertson regardless. Isiah Thomas will need to have a monster series for Dallas to get back to the Conference Finals. So does James Worthy, who will be matched up with Buck Williams in a match-up that may decide the series.

Series Preview
The frontcourt battle for this series is fascinating. One side are legends Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Robert Parish. The other, Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing. If Hakeem and Ewing can dominate the interior game the Kings will end the Laker reign on top of the West. The Kings will also need to find ways to slow down Magic and Bernard King. The Kings do have some intriguing players to throw at them in Terry Porter, Danny Aingle and Sedale Threatt. The Kings ended the Laker reign as Pacific Division Champions. Now they have a chance to end their reign as Western Conference Champions.

Series Preview
An interesting match-up between two top level defenses that have players that could go off at any time. Both the Cavs and Nets have been playoff disappointments the last few seasons. Both are coming off big first round victories, especially the Nets, who defeated the Defending NBA Champion Bulls. The Kevin McHale-Moses Malone match-up may determine the series. If Moses can clean up the boards, the Nets will likely come up on top. If McHale dominates, the Cavs will win. Clifford Robinson and Orlando Woolridge is an exciting power forward battle as well. The Nets will throw defensive specialist Dudley Bradley at Rolando Blackman, just as the Cavs will throw defensive rookie Gerald Wilkins at Calvin Natt. The Nets do have a big advantage at the point guard position with Sidney Moncrief against Jim Paxson, but if Paxson can perform it may not matter. This one should be a good defensive battle.

Bird
vs. Michael. The Heat played the Celtics well during the season as, like everyone else in the league, Boston struggled to defend MJ. The Heat match-up well against the frontcourt of Boston, as Sam Perkins and Xavier McDaniel will likely give Larry Smith and Larry Nance trouble. Truthfully though, which superstar has the better series will likely determine the winner. If Bird continues to play at the level the MVP should, Boston will not only win the this series but probably the title. But we saw what MJ did to the Pistons the prior series, and Boston doesn’t have the defensive talent Detroit had to contain him.

Game 1 - #4 St. Louis Spirits at #1 Dallas Mavericks

In the opening game of their series, the Dallas Mavericks made a strong statement, dismantling the Spirits with a formidable second-half performance (68-35).

The Spirits, though starting off strong, couldn't sustain their initial momentum. Dale Ellis, who scored 27 points on an efficient 11/22 shooting, and Mark Eaton, who dominated the paint with a 10-point, 15-rebound, 9-block performance, were key contributors in the early stages of the game. However, their efforts proved insufficient against the relentless offense of the Mavericks.

Dallas found significant contributions from their star players, James Worthy and Isiah Thomas, who both poured in 23 points. Beyond their scoring, Worthy added 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 4 blocks, while Thomas dished out 10 assists and swiped 3 steals, shooting an impressive 10/19 from the field.

The game's critical turning point was the Mavericks' ability to get to the foul line consistently. Louis Orr stood out, converting all of his 8 attempts from the charity stripe. Overall, Dallas went 21/27 from the line, while the Spirits only managed to go 3 for 6. This discrepancy in free-throw attempts, coupled with the Mavericks' high-powered offense, allowed Dallas to take control of the game and ultimately secure the win.

With a strong start to the series, the Mavericks will be looking to carry this momentum into the next game, while the Spirits will need to regroup and strategize on how to counter Dallas' scoring prowess and their ability to draw fouls.

MAVERICKS 116, Spirits 96 (Mavericks lead 1-0)

Game 1 - #3 Los Angeles Lakers at #2 Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings opened their series against the Los Angeles Lakers in dominant fashion, with Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing overpowering the Lakers' frontcourt in a comprehensive 104-90 victory. The Kings' dynamic duo of Olajuwon and Ewing wreaked havoc in the paint, combining for 8 offensive rebounds (25 total), 5 steals, and 8 blocks.

Terry Porter was the offensive spark for the Kings, leading the scoring with 21 points, while also dishing out 6 assists. Olajuwon contributed 17 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, while Ewing added 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists to the Kings' total.

For the Lakers, Bernard King put up a valiant effort, scoring 34 points on an efficient 13/20 shooting, and Magic Johnson stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 12 assists. However, they received little support from their teammates. The Lakers' duo of Robert Parish and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar struggled greatly against the Kings' defensive front, managing a paltry combined total of just 5 field goals from 28 attempts.

If the Lakers are to make this a competitive series, they'll need Parish and Abdul-Jabbar to find their rhythm and contribute more effectively on both ends of the court. As things stand, the Kings hold a 1-0 series lead and look set to continue their strong form into the upcoming games.

KINGS 104, Lakers 90 (Kings lead 1-0)

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 34 PTS, 5 REB, 4 AST, 13/20 FG
Magic Johnson: 19 PTS, 9 REB, 12 AST, 4 STL, 2 BLK, 7/11 FG

Kings Stats
Hakeem Olajuwon: 17 PTS, 14 REB, 3 STL, 4 BLK, 7/12 FG

Game 1 - #4 New Jersey Nets at #1 Cleveland Cavaliers

The New Jersey Nets kicked off their series against the Cleveland Cavaliers with a commanding win, thanks to their stifling defense and dominance on the boards. Cleveland found little room to maneuver against the Nets' defense, managing a meager 36% shooting from the field. The rebounding battle was also decisively won by the Nets, who outrebounded the Cavs 57-41.

Moses Malone was an absolute force on the glass, collecting a game-high 17 rebounds for the Nets, while Sidney Moncrief led the offensive charge with 25 points. This comprehensive team performance from the Nets has swung home-court advantage their way, putting them in a strong position for the rest of the series.

The Cavaliers, who managed to regain home-court advantage in their first-round series against the Baltimore Bullets, face a much tougher challenge against this defensively strong Nets team. Avoiding a 0-2 deficit before heading to New Jersey is crucial for the Cavaliers if they aim to keep their playoff hopes alive. They'll need to find a way to counter the Nets' smothering defense and improve their rebounding if they hope to level the series in Game 2.

Nets 109, CAVALIERS 79 (Nets lead 1-0)

Nets Stats
Moses Malone: 17 PTS, 17 REB
Cliff Robinson: 17 PTS, 6 REB, 2 STL, 4 BLK
Sidney Moncrief: 25 PTS, 10 REB, 2 STL

Cavaliers Stats
Kevin McHale: 20 PTS, 12 REB, 6 BLK, 7/14 FG

Game 1 - #6 Miami Heat at #2 Boston Celtics

The Miami Heat, fresh from their stunning comeback victory against the Pistons, began their series against the Celtics with an impressive win at the historic Boston Garden. Michael Jordan once again led the charge, scoring 37 points in a performance that can only be described as unstoppable. The Heat took control of the game right from the start, outscoring the Celtics 36-15 in the first quarter, a lead from which the Celtics never recovered.

Larry Bird, while putting up respectable numbers, wasn't able to produce the heroics Boston fans are accustomed to. Miami's victory not only gives them an early series lead, but also seizes the home court advantage from the Celtics.

With this victory, Miami Heat's momentum continues to build. They'll aim to extend their lead in Game 2, while the Celtics will need to regroup and find a strategy to contain Jordan and the high-flying Heat.

Heat 121, CELTICS 104 (Heat lead 1-0)

Heat Stats
Michael Jordan: 37 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST, 4 BLK
Xavier McDaniel: 23 PTS, 6 REB, 2 STL

Game 2 - #4 St. Louis Spirits at #1 Dallas Mavericks (Mavericks lead 1-0)

In a clear case of déjà vu, Game 2 mirrored Game 1 as the Dallas Mavericks maintained their firm grip on the series against the Spirits. The Mavericks took command right from the opening tip, led by the dazzling play of Isiah Thomas who exploded for 27 points and dished out 12 assists. Dallas' early dominance set the tone for the rest of the game, and they never looked back.

The Spirits did see solid performances from their backcourt, with Phil Ford putting up a double-double of 14 points and 14 assists, and Joe Dumars contributing 15 points. However, their efforts weren't enough to turn the tide. The Spirits will be hoping for a spark in their next game, potentially from the return of Alvin Robertson.

The Mavericks are in the driver's seat with a 2-0 series lead as they head into Game 3, while the Spirits will be fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive.

MAVERICKS 116, Spirits 100 (Mavericks lead 2-0)

Game 2 - #3 Los Angeles Lakers at #2 Sacramento Kings (Kings lead 1-0)

The Sacramento Kings maintained their stronghold on the series, defeating the Lakers in Game 2 despite a strong performance from Robert Parish for Los Angeles. Parish put up 28 points and 8 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome the balanced attack of the Kings, with seven players scoring in double figures.

Patrick Ewing, the reigning Rookie of the Year, held his own against Parish, posting a double-double with 23 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists, along with 5 blocks. Despite Magic Johnson's impressive triple-double, the Lakers struggled to find their offensive rhythm for the second straight game. The team will now need to regroup and make the most of their home court advantage in LA to keep their NBA title defense alive.

With this win, the Kings are up 2-0 and have a firm grip on the series.

KINGS 110, Lakers 99 (Kings lead 2-0)

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 24 PTS, 10 REB, 4 AST, 3 STL
Robert Parish: 28 PTS, 8 REB

Game 2 - #4 New Jersey Nets at #1 Cleveland Cavaliers (Nets lead 1-0)

In a stark reversal from Game 1, the Cleveland Cavaliers took control in Game 2, tying the series against the New Jersey Nets. Cleveland's powerhouse trio of Kevin McHale, Orlando Woolridge, and Rolando Blackman took center stage, amassing 66 points between them. Meanwhile, the Nets struggled to find the basket, a contrast to their strong offensive showing in the series opener.

A decisive fourth quarter saw the Cavs pull away, securing a split of the opening two games on their home court.

The Nets received solid performances from Calvin Natt, Moses Malone, and Sidney Moncrief, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Cavaliers' offensive onslaught.

With the series now level, both teams will be looking to gain the upper hand in Game 3.

CAVALIERS 104, Nets 80 (Series tied 1-1)

Nets Stats
Calvin Natt: 20 PTS, 2 STL
Moses Malone: 13 PTS, 11 REB
Sidney Moncrief: 13 PTS, 4 REB, 6 AST, 3 STL

Cavaliers Stats
Kevin McHale: 23 PTS, 12 REB, 6 BLK

Game 2 - #6 Miami Heat at #2 Boston Celtics (Heat lead 1-0)

Game 2 saw a significant shift in the series as the Boston Celtics dominated the Miami Heat, stalling their momentum. The Celtics' trio of Larry Bird, Larry Nance, and Purvis Short combined for an impressive 66 points, providing the offensive firepower needed to secure the win.

On the other side, Michael Jordan had a tough night, hitting just 8 of his 27 field goal attempts and finishing with 19 points. Nonetheless, the Heat achieved their initial goal of securing a split in the opening games in Boston.

The Celtics' commanding victory not only levels the series but also sends a strong message that they won't be easily overmatched by MJ.

CELTICS 112, Heat 89 (Series tied 1-1)

Heat Stats
Michael Jordan: 19 PTS, 8 REB, 7 AST

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 20 PTS, 10 REB, 5 AST

Game 3 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #4 St. Louis Spirits (Mavericks lead 2-0)

The Mavericks looked like they were going to go up 3-0 but the Spirits of St. Louis just kept coming back. Backed by a fiery crowd, the Spirits made up a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter, but kept failing to get over the hump. Isiah Thomas played out of his mind and put down a huge dunk with 3 minutes left to put the Mavericks back up 118-111. Still, the Spirits wouldn’t give up. Phil Ford and Gerald Henderson traded baskets to keep the 7-point margin. But then Dale Ellis and Mark Eaton made baskets. Dallas made a couple free throws but missed a couple, but it was suddenly 122-117 with just 2 minutes left.

Buck Williams, having the game of his career, backs James Worthy down and hit a lay-up to make it a one-possession ballgame. Isiah still looked to put the Spirits in a big hole with another bucket, but Alvin Robertson, playing well in his return, finds Dale Ellis for a three to make it 124-122 with 42 seconds left. Henderson makes a couple of free throws…but Alvin Robertson just takes his own three and hits it! 126-125 Mavericks with 17 seconds left! Isiah gets to the line, but he only makes one-of-two, the story of the fourth quarter for Dallas. Buck Williams, who left LA for St. Louis for moments such as these, breaks away from Worthy and gets a lay-up to tie the game at 127 with six seconds left! Worthy almost gets his revenge as he gets a clean shot off despite good defense from Williams, but he misses and we head to overtime!

After trading a couple of baskets the Mavericks are the ones who hit a three pointer, courtesy of the playoff veteran Henderson to go up 132-129. But once again the Spirits refuse to go away. Phil Ford hits a shot, then Buck finally gets the Spirits ahead with 3 minutes left, 133-132. Isiah makes two free throws to give Dallas back the lead, but the giant Yasutaka Okayama gets an basket on the inside to give the Spirts back the lead! Isiah finds Jerome Kersey though, and once again Dallas is back up. But Buck Williams is determined to win this game for the Spirits and he catches a great pass from Robertson and hits a layup. Phil Ford keeps the momentum going with a steal and a dunk, followed by Alvin Robertson blocking a shot by Kersey to give the Spirits back the ball. When it came down to the end, the Mavericks ran out of ways to score, and the Spirits got on the board. Isiah did everything he could with 41 points, but Buck Williams had 43 and if the Spirits win the series, this may go down as the “Buck Williams Game”.

Game 3 - #2 Sacramento Kings at #3 Los Angeles Lakers (Kings lead 2-0)

In a true showcase of his moniker "Winning Time," Magic Johnson led the Los Angeles Lakers to a pivotal Game 3 victory over the Sacramento Kings. Johnson orchestrated the win with an awe-inspiring performance, tallying 28 points, 13 rebounds, and 15 assists. The Kings had no answer for him, and despite still leading the series 2-1, they will need to find a way to contain Magic if they wish to win the series.

The Kings' duo of Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing continued to impress, delivering strong performances. However, Game 3 was undeniably Magic's night.

With this victory, the Lakers showed their resilience and capacity to bounce back. As the series progresses, the Kings will have to regroup and strategize on how to neutralize Magic Johnson's impact.

Game 3 - #1 Cleveland Cavaliers at #4 New Jersey Nets (Series tied 1-1)

In a series marked by decisive victories, Game 3 saw the New Jersey Nets regain the upper hand with a dominant win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite productive performances from Kevin McHale and Rolando Blackman, the Cavs couldn't find their rhythm, especially with Orlando Woolridge struggling from the field and only managing to score 7 points.

The Nets, on the other hand, were firing on all cylinders, led by Calvin Natt's impressive 27-point performance. With strong contributions from Cliff Robinson and Sidney Moncrief, the Nets controlled the game and now lead the series 2-1.

As the series continues, the Cavaliers will need to find a way to shut down the Nets' potent offense and get more production from their key players.

Game 3 - #2 Boston Celtics at #6 Miami Heat (Series tied 1-1)

Fueled by a frustrating Game 2, Michael Jordan was once again unstoppable, this time on both sides of the court.

The Celtics brought an 83-82 lead heading into the fourth quarter…before the Heat blew them out. Miami won the 4th quarter 39-16 as MJ did what he wanted, finishing with a 36-point, 6-assist, 6-steal masterpiece. Larry Bird led the Celtics in points, rebounds and assists, but again didn’t go off like he did all season and in the first round. Bird ended with 24 points, and it looks like Boston will need something bigger to avoid being upset by Miami.

Game 4 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #4 St. Louis Spirits (Mavericks lead 2-1)

The Spirits backed up their stunning Game 3 overtime victory with another strong performance in Game 4, securing a wire-to-wire win against the Mavericks in St. Louis. Dale Ellis was the standout player for the Spirits, lighting up the scoreboard with 40 points, including five from behind the arc.

Buck Williams also continued his strong form, contributing a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, along with 4 assists and 3 steals. Despite a standout performance by Isiah Thomas for the Mavericks, who posted an impressive 22 assists and 9 steals, Dallas struggled with their shooting. If the Mavericks had been more accurate, Thomas could potentially have set a new record for assists in a game.

With this win, the Spirits have leveled the series 2-2, as the teams head back to Dallas for Game 5. This back-and-forth series continues to be a captivating contest, with both teams showing they have what it takes to come out on top.

Game 4 - #2 Sacramento Kings at #3 Los Angeles Lakers (Kings lead 2-1)

In a surprisingly slow-paced game, Bernard King and Magic Johnson carried the Lakers, but Hakeem Olajuwon was dominating the game for the Kings too. The Kings were up seven, 92-85, with 3:54 left as Magic went to the line. Magic drained both to cut the lead to five. Mike Sanders hit a couple of free throws for the Kings to bring it back to seven, but Magic drove through the two destructive defenders in Hakeem and Patrick Ewing for a jam that lit the LA Forum up. 94-89 Kings.

Magic finds the veteran Elvin Hayes for a layup to get the game within three. Magic draws a foul on Ewing and hits two more free throws, and it’s a one-point game with 2 minutes left! Both teams can’t convert their next possession before Bernard King gets another big jam to give the Lakers the lead, 95-94! Ewing gets to the line to give the Kings back the lead with 1:05 left. The Lakers can’t get a shot off in their next possession, committing a shot clock violation. Danny Ainge misses a shot, but Patrick Ewing gets the offensive board. Ewing tries to make it a three-point game but misses…and the ball goes out of bounds. The Lakers have one second to figure this out. Magic inbounds the ball to Bernard King, who gets off a great look and SCORES from the top of the key! The Lakers tie the series as the Forum goes crazy! Magic and Bernard scored 57 of the Lakers 97 points to carry them to this four-game win.

Game 4 - #1 Cleveland Cavaliers at #4 New Jersey Nets (Nets lead 2-1)

The Nets looked to put up a 3-1 lead as the Cavs looked to get back into the series in New Jersey. This one came down to the wire, with Dudley Bradley hitting a jumper as time expired to take the game to overtime!

Jim Paxson
was the first to strike for the Cavs on OT, but Bradley would tie it up right away. Each team then locked one another down, unsurprising considering these are two of the best defensive teams in the league. It wasn’t until there was 1:53 left before the 97-97 was broken when Cliff Robinson got to the line. Another minute went by with no points from Cleveland and Sidney Moncrief added another free throw for the 100-97 lead. Moncrief hit again to make it 102-97. The Cavs showed some last-second life as Rolando Blackman hit a three with 12 seconds left, but the Nets got to the line again and the Cavs couldn’t make up the four-point deficit. Huge win for the Nets as they just need one more win to make the Eastern Conference Finals.

Game 4 - #2 Boston Celtics at #6 Miami Heat (Heat lead 2-1)

For the first time perhaps in his life, it was clear Michael Jordan wasn’t the best basketball player on the court.

Larry Bird delivered a phenomenal performance in Game 4, leading the Boston Celtics to a commanding victory over the Miami Heat. Bird's 49-point, 17-rebound showing truly demonstrated his legendary status in the sport. With Purvis Short also contributing a solid 20 points, the Celtics were able to regain control of the series.

Having taken the win on Miami's home court, the Celtics return to Boston with the series tied at 2-2, and the momentum in their favor. The Heat will need to regroup and find a way to slow down Larry Bird if they hope to turn the series around.

Game 5 - #4 St. Louis Spirits at #1 Dallas Mavericks (Series tied 2-2)

The Dallas Mavericks managed to hold off the Spirits in a tightly contested Game 5. The game was neck and neck going into the final quarter, but the Mavericks, led by James Worthy and Isiah Thomas, managed to pull away, securing a crucial victory in the series.

Worthy was spectacular, putting up 33 points, while Thomas chipped in with 31. This duo's performance was just enough to outmatch the impressive efforts from Dale Ellis and Buck Williams, who had 26 and 22 points respectively for the Spirits.

Now, with the Mavericks leading the series 3-2, the Spirits face the daunting task of needing to defend their home court one more time in Game 6. If successful, they will force a decisive Game 7 back in Dallas, where they will need to overcome the Mavericks' home court advantage to advance in the playoffs.

Game 5 - #3 Los Angeles Lakers at #2 Sacramento Kings (Series tied 2-2)

In a thrilling battle of these new Pacific Division rivals, the Kings managed to hold off the Lakers to secure a crucial Game 5 victory. The defensive duo of Patrick Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon was the driving force for the Kings, combining for 56 points and 8 blocks. They were complemented by Sedale Threatt and Terry Porter, who contributed 18 and 17 points respectively.

Despite an impressive performance by the Lakers' big three, Magic Johnson, Robert Parish, and Bernard King, who combined for a staggering 76 points, and a solid contribution from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Lakers just couldn't find a way past the Kings' defensive fortress.

With this victory, the Kings have taken a significant lead in the series. They now stand one win away from moving on, putting immense pressure on the Lakers to deliver in the upcoming Game 6.

Orlando Woolridge also played a key role in the victory, breaking out of his recent slump with a crucial 27-point performance. Calvin Natt was the standout player for the Nets, scoring 29 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Cavaliers' strong defensive performance.

With this victory, the Cavaliers managed to extend the series to a Game 6, which will be held in New Jersey. The Nets will have another opportunity to close out the series at home, but the Cavaliers have shown that they are not to be underestimated.

Game 6 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #4 St. Louis Spirits (Mavericks lead 3-2)

The Spirits looked like they were going to cruise to a Game 6 victory to force a deciding 7th game…but then James Worthy went out of his mind for the Mavs. A double-digit lead quickly evaporated in the 4th quarter. A 108-93 Spirit lead with 8 minutes left turned into a 108-105 lead with 5 minutes left and suddenly the Mavericks looked to finish off St. Louis and advance.

To the Spirits’ credit, they refused to yield. The Spirits got some clutch shots from unlikely places: former All-Star Mike Mitchell came off the bench to hit a basket. Yasutaka Okayama hit a bucket. Still, a foul on Phil Ford followed by a technical allowed the Mavericks to hit free throws to make it 112-110 Spirits. A little bit later a Phil Ford shot clock violation followed by a foul put Isiah Thomas on the line with STL leading 114-112. Isiah hit one-of-two. Dallas was so close, but they couldn’t get over the hump. Isiah missed a chance to take the lead with 23 seconds left. Still, after sending Mark Eaton to the line the Spirits only led 115-113 with 19 seconds left. James Worthy, who had a fantastic game, got a great look but couldn’t connect as time expired. Game 6 - #2 Sacramento Kings at #3 Los Angeles Lakers (Kings lead 3-2)

The Kings had a slight fourth quarter lead, but the Lakers punched them in the mouth right away, erasing a seven point deficit and taking the lead just two minutes in to the quarter. The Lakers and Kings battled back and forth. The Lakers started to pull away late with a five-point lead in with 1:54 left, going up 106-101 after a Magic Johnson free throw. Terry Porter makes a couple of free throws himself to make it a one possession game, 106-103 Lakers.

The Kings can’t keep themselves from fouling, and Magic hits two to put the lead back to five with 1:22 left. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar records a couple of key blocked shots, and the Lakers on the other end continue getting to the line. They push the lead to 110-103, but Porter drains a three to cut it to four! Magic makes another free throw and then play good defense. Sedale Threatt does hit a three to make it 111-109 with five seconds left, but the Kings can’t get the foul in time and the Lakers defend the Forum once again, forcing a decisive Game 7 in Sacramento.

Game 7 - #4 St. Louis Spirits at #1 Dallas Mavericks (Series tied 3-3)

The Mavericks and Spirits once again battled one another tough. The series was decided in the 4th quarter. While the Mavericks, once again led by a great James Worthy game, nursed a small lead, the Spirits were able to close the gap as time ticked away.

Buck Williams was able to draw a crucial foul with 2:14 left. Not only did his free throws cut the Maverick lead to just two points, 110-108, but this also caused Worthy to foul out of the game. Isiah Thomas can’t hit the shot, and the Spirits tie the came on a nice pass from Alvin Robertson to Dale Ellis! 110-110! 1:38 left. Phil Ford stuns the crowd with an interception on a pass by Maurice Lucas. But Jerome Kersey stole the ball back and Reunion Arena in Dallas exploded as he converted a breakaway jam!

With 50 seconds left, Buck Williams gets a quick hook shot to go down and we’re tied again at 112! Isiah tries to win the game for Dallas, but he misses from the wing. Kersey grabs an offensive rebound, and the Mavericks can now play for the last shot. Isiah tries to drive in after the Mavericks milk the clock. A layup doesn’t fall, but Phil Ford is called for the foul with six seconds left! The Dallas crowd gasps as Isiah misses the first…but he does drain the second to give Dallas a 113-112 lead. The Spirits have one more chance and Ford finds Alvin Robertson, but his jumper from the free throw line just rims out…and the Mavericks survive!

Robertson holds his head in his hands at center court. The Spirits put up an amazing fight and got as close as you can to advancing. Still, there’s a bright future for St. Louis basketball in the NBA. As for the Mavericks, they return to the Western Conference Finals after missing out last year.

Game 7 - #3 Los Angeles Lakers at #2 Sacramento Kings (Series tied 3-3)

This is another Game 7 that went down to the wire. Once again the Kings entered the fourth quarter with a small lead, but that lead was quickly evaporated by the Lakers. The Lakers took the lead with 5:33 left on a Magic Johnson no-look pass to Bernard King, 91-90. The Lakers and Kings then battled back-and-forth, leading a 99-99 tied with just 51 seconds left.

The legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar finds Cliff Levingston, allowing Levingston to hit the biggest shot of his career with 37 seconds left to put the Lakers up. Mike O’Koren misses, and Magic gets to the line. Magic makes a free throw to push the lead to three with just 17 seconds left. Terry Porter misses a game-tying three and Patrick Ewing missed a tip-in. The Lakers secured the rebound with just 3 seconds left. Levingston added two more clutch free throws, and Porter made a meaningless basket to close the game. The Lakers won in Sacramento for the first time in the series, but that’s all they needed.

They’ll advance to their sixth straight Western Conference Finals. They’ll face Dallas in a rematch of the 1984 WCF. The Kings are left clearly disappointed, but as long as they keep Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing it’ll be hard to stop them from eventually breaking through.

Game 7 - #4 New Jersey Nets at #1 Cleveland Cavaliers (Series tied 3-3)

Another Game 7, another close battle.

The Nets led by one with 6:31 left. The Cavs would take a 93-92 lead shortly though and once again the lock-down defense that has fueled the Cavs comeback began to shine. The Nets were stuck at 92 points until a couple of Cliff Robinson free throws with 2:51 left. At that point, the Cavs had built a lead and led 99-94.

One again the Cavs turned on the defense and Kevin McHale provided some offense, hitting a couple of free throws to push the lead to seven. Sidney Moncrief hits a couple himself to get the Nets within 5 again. After a Cav free throw a Robinson lay-up makes it 102-98 Cavs with 1:16 left. Jim Paxson got to the line and pushed the lead back to six. Calvin Natt had enough of this Cavalier defense and drains a huge three, making it 104-101 Cavs with 1:04 left.

But once again the Cavalier defense would hold as the Nets wouldn’t score another point. New Jersey, who won two ABA Championships in the 70s, looked to make their first Eastern Conference Finals in the NBA, but blew a golden opportunity to do so. Moses Malone is only getting older, but the rest of the Nets still are on the right side of 30, although it’s getting close. Despite an early injury to Sam Perkins, the Bulls fought through Game 7 and even led heading into the fourth. Like the other three Game 7s in the Semis, this one went down to the wire.

Michael Jordan, excellent with the pressure on and on the road, finds Derek Harper for a basket to give the Heat a 103-102 lead with 3:19 to go. The Heat struggle to score afterwards, but they also play great defense to hold the lead. It’s not until the 1:53 left mark that Larry Bird finds Gus Williams driving for a layup to give Boston back the lead, 104-103.

The Heat miss out on two great chances to take the lead, giving the Celtics back the ball with 1:04 left. Heat shut down the possession as Gus Williams misses, but Bird tips in the miss to make it 106-103 with 35 seconds left! Jordan misses with just 4 seconds left, and the Celtics hold on to advance!

Bird and Jordan shake hands near center court. Bird knows his Celtics escaped this one.

The Heat have now exited in the 2nd Round for two straight seasons, but there’s still a lot of excitement due to taking Boston to seven games and of course, because they have Michael Jordan.

The Celtics will look to return to the NBA Finals but have their work cut out for them as the Cavaliers are a strong challenge.

CELTICS 106, Heat 103 (Celtics wins 4-3)

Series Preview
No way around it, the Mavericks completely dominated the Lakers in the regular season. While the Lakers had varying levels of health during most of these games, the March 6th game was even strength. Now, in these playoffs we won’t start at even strength as Ralph Sampson will be out through at least Game 3 or 4, if not later. Is that enough of an edge for the Lakers to get by Dallas to make their 4th straight NBA Finals? This series will feature the top two premier point guards in the NBA in Isiah Thomas (Mavericks) and Magic Johnson (Lakers). Both teams sport a versatile scoring forward in James Worthy (Mavs) and Bernard King (Lakers). Dallas is the favorite for sure, but LA has the experience.

Larry Bird
and the Celtics come up against Kevin McHale and the Cavs. The Cavs took a huge step toward contention this season powered by the McHale-Orlando Woolridge-Rolando Blackman trio. McHale and Woolridge will go up against Boston’s bruiser Larry Smith and high flying forward Larry Nance. The guard match-up is also interesting, as Cleveland’s rookie defensive guard Gerald Wilkins will look to harass Purvis Short and former Defensive Player of the Year Gus Williams will look to shut down Cleveland’s Jim Paxson. Whatever the case, this is a battle between Cleveland’s Top 5 defense and Boston’s Top 5 offense. Can Bird go off to get Boston back to the Finals? Or is Kevin McHale ready to lead the Cavs to their first NBA Finals?

Game 1 - #3 Los Angeles Lakers at #1 Dallas Mavericks

In a one-sided Game 1, the Dallas Mavericks have taken a solid win over the Los Angeles Lakers. The Mavericks showcased a balanced attack with key contributions from several players, including James Worthy who put up 22 points and Isiah Thomas who provided a double-double with 22 points and 15 assists. Role players also stepped up for the Mavericks, with Jerome Kersey scoring 16 points, Gerald Henderson adding 20, and Thurl Bailey, who is filling in for injured Ralph Sampson, contributing 14 points while also effectively shutting down Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, holding him to zero points.

Despite Magic Johnson's impressive performance for the Lakers, with a 22-point, 10-rebound, and 12-assist triple-double, it wasn't enough to counter the Mavericks' offensive prowess. Robert Parish and Bernard King could only contribute a combined 37 points, falling short in their efforts to keep up with Dallas.

Game 1 - #2 Boston Celtics at #1 Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavaliers came out strong in Game 1, largely thanks to an outstanding performance from Rolando Blackman, who outmatched Larry Bird, putting up 31 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists compared to Bird's 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.

A surprise standout for the Cavaliers was Jim Paxson, who contributed 23 points and consistently outplayed Gus Williams of the Celtics throughout the game. Despite the Celtics being the favored team to make it to the NBA Finals based on record and seeding, the Cavaliers made a powerful statement with their victory in Game 1.

Game 2 - #3 Los Angeles Lakers at #1 Dallas Mavericks (Mavericks lead 1-0)

The Lakers successfully pushed the series to a 1-1 split, playing their own style of basketball and bringing the heat in Game 2 against the Mavericks. The dynamic duo of Magic Johnson and Bernard King proved to be too much for Dallas, with Magic putting up a phenomenal triple-double of 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 20 assists, and King contributing a solid 36 points. Robert Parish provided additional support, scoring 27 points with 4 offensive rebounds.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar also managed to get some revenge on Thurl Bailey, contributing to Bailey fouling out while scoring 12 points himself.

While Isiah Thomas and James Worthy performed well for the Mavericks, the Laker trio was simply unstoppable. Now, as the series moves to Los Angeles, the Mavericks will aim to regain their home court advantage. They will also be eagerly awaiting the return of Ralph Sampson.

Game 2 - #2 Boston Celtics at #1 Cleveland Cavaliers (Cavaliers lead 1-0)

The Cavaliers unleashed a wrecking ball named Kevin McHale in Game 2, turning a close game at the half into a second half route. McHale was completely unstoppable with 26 points and 22 rebounds, forcing Boston’s rebounding specialist Larry Smith. Orlando Woolridge also added another 26 points, besting Boston’s Larry Nance. Rolando Blackman also got the better of the MVP, Larry Bird, for the second straight game. The question now is…what’s happened to the MVP?

Game 3 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #3 Los Angeles Lakers (Series tied 1-1)

It may be the greatest two-man game in NBA playoff history as Bernard King and Magic Johnson were absolutely unstoppable…yet the Mavericks managed to hold onto the lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lakers would regain the lead with 8:05 left after a three point play by Bernard King put them back up 92-91. The Lakers ballooned that lead to seven points before Thurl Bailey (once again substituting for Ralph Sampson) scored with 6:46 left to make it 98-93. Now Dallas went on the offensive while temporarily shutting down the Lakers, cutting the lead to 98-97 with 5:20 left. A few minutes later, an Isiah Thomas steal led to Isiah finding Louis Orr for a jumper to give Dallas back the lead, 101-100 with 4:18 left.

It becomes a strong defensive game, with each team finding points at the line. Bernard King’s free throw with 2:38 left got LA back ahead 103-102. Jerome Kersey brings it right back with a layup to make it 104-103. Magic finds Robert Parish, it’s another 20+ assist for him, to push it back to 105-104. Elvin Hayes and Isiah trade free throws to get to 107-106 LA with 1:31 left. Magic finds Cliff Levingston to make it a three point lead with 1:18 left. The Lakers miss several shots, but Magic grabs the offensive rebound each time as the Lakers eat up the clock. Cliff Levingston misses though and Kersey gets the board. 12 seconds left, Dallas still down three.

Playoff veteran Gerald Henderson gets the inbound pass from Kersey and drains the game-tying three, making it 109-109! The Lakers have one more chance to avoid overtime. Magic gets the ball and perfectly finds Parish for the easy lay-up as time expires! Dallas is shocked as the LA Forum goes bonkers. The Lakers defend home court behind two legendary performances: Bernard King’s 50 points and Magic’s 23 assists!

LAKERS 111, Mavericks 109 (Lakers lead 2-1)

Mavericks Stats
Isiah Thomas: 24 PTS, 12 AST, 6 STL
Thurl Bailey: 25 PTS, 9 REB
James Worthy: 22 PTS, 12 REB

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 50 PTS, 10 REB, 2 STL, 22/28 FG
Magic Johnson: 14 PTS, 12 REB, 23 AST, 3 STL

Game 3 - #1 Cleveland Cavaliers at #2 Boston Celtics (Cavaliers lead 2-0)

It wasn’t easy for the Boston Celtics as the Cleveland Cavaliers put together a strong defensive performance, holding Boston to 36.3% shooting. The only problem was Boston crashed the boards at an insane rate: grabbing 27 offensive rebounds (67 rebounds total), and resulting in 13 more field goal attempts. That was enough for the Celtics to pull off the win as Cleveland also shot under 40% from the field.

Larry Bird led Boston with 23 points, but grabbed 8 offensive rebounds and 18 boards total. Four players for Boston reached the double-digit rebound mark.

CELTICS 92, Cavaliers 85 (Cavaliers lead 2-1)

Cavaliers Stats
Orlando Woolridge: 14 PTS, 14 REB, 6 AST
Jim Paxson: 23 PTS, 8 REB

Celtics Stats

Game 4 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #3 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 2-1)

In a monumental showdown, James Worthy and Isiah Thomas outshined the Lakers' duo of Bernard King and Magic Johnson, leading the Mavericks to a pivotal win on the road. James Worthy was the star of the show, scoring a staggering 44 points, while Isiah delivered a double-double with 25 points and 19 assists.

This remarkable performance helped offset the efforts of Bernard King, who scored 46 points, and Magic Johnson, who racked up a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 16 assists. The Mavericks were still without Ralph Sampson, but Thurl Bailey stepped up, delivering a double-double of his own with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Now, the series is tied and it's essentially a three-game series with Dallas having the advantage of hosting two home games. This victory has allowed the Mavericks to regain home court advantage, making the upcoming games even more crucial.

Mavericks 134, LAKERS 126 (Series tied 2-2)

Game 4 - #1 Cleveland Cavaliers at #2 Boston Celtics (Cavaliers lead 2-1)

The MVP has arrived in Boston, but that didn’t mean the Cavs gave up and played dead. In stark contrast to the defensive battle in Game 3, Game 4 was a fast-paced, offensive affair. All game the Cavs and Celtics traded the lead. Larry Bird missed a shot late in the 4th, but tipped in his own rebound to give Boston a 112-110 lead. Kevin McHale, playing excellent basketball as well, followed that right up with a basket of his own to tie the game back up with 51 seconds to play. The Celtics get a surprise late basket from Dexter Shouse to go back up, but Orlando Woolridge provides another response from Cleveland. 114-114 with 9 seconds left. Bird can’t find a shot but finds Purvis Short, but Short’s shot just rims out…and he head to overtime!

Things did not slow down in overtime. With 2:14 left a McHale dunk cut a Celtic lead to one, 121-120. Gus Williams makes it 123-120, but Woolridge again is quick with the response to make it 123-122 with 1:34 left. Bird would hit a jumper to push the lead back to three, and this time the Celtic defense would hold as Gus gets a steal on Jim Paxson. This led to a 3-on-2 break where Gus hits Bird, and the Boston Garden explodes as a result! The Cavs just ran out of time as the Celtics managed to tie the series at two apiece. Bird, after struggling all series, dropped a 46-12-9.

CELTICS 127, Cavaliers 122 (OT) (Series tied 2-2)

Cavaliers Stats
Kevin McHale; 25 PTS, 14 REB, 3 BLK, 12/19 FG

Game 5 - #3 Los Angeles Lakers at #1 Dallas Mavericks (Series tied 2-2)

This one will be remembered for a long time.

Ralph Sampson returned to the line-up for the Mavericks and Dallas was smelling blood. Only Bernard King refused to be denied. King was completely unstoppable and crossed the 50-point mark in the 4th quarter. Still, the game could have went either way.

The Lakers held onto a small edge early in the 4th, with Dallas only pulling ahead 93-91 with 11 minutes left. The Lakers re-established the lead with Bernard heading back to the free throw line, and then one possession later Magic Johnson hitting a huge three-pointer. Still, the Lakers couldn’t break away. While they pushed the lead to six, the Mavericks kept coming back and with 2:51 left the Mavs got back to within one thanks to Sampson. 119-118 Lakers.

Bernard King once again refused to be denied, hitting a big shot that gave him his 57th and 58th points of the night. Isiah responded by hitting one-of-two free throws, then stole the ball from Magic! Isiah finds Jerome Kersey, who finds Sampson to tie the game at 121 with 1:46 left! Magic puts the Lakers back up by two, but Isiah finds Sampson again with 59 seconds left to tie things at 123. Bernard King perhaps makes his first mistake in this masterful game as James Worthy swipes the ball from him! It’s a two-on-one break…but Cliff Levingston makes the play of his life and stops Worthy at the rim! King grabs the rebound and finds Magic, who gives it back to King as King hits the lay-up to give LA a 125-123 lead with 20 seconds to go! That’s King’s 60th point! Isiah gets through the Laker defense and gets a clear path to the rim…only for Levingston to make another insane defensive play by blocking Isiah’s layup! Robert Parish grabs the rebound and with no left is sent to the line. Parish makes one-of-two, and Dallas doesn’t have the time to tie the game! The Lakers steal critical Game 5 thanks to Bernard King’s 60, Magic’s playmaking and two timely blocks from Cliff Levingston!

Lakers 126, MAVERICKS 123 (Lakers lead 3-2)

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 60 PTS, 8 REB, 4 STL, 21/36 FG, 18/22 FT

Game 5 - #2 Boston Celtics at #1 Cleveland Cavaliers (Series tied 2-2)

The Celtics began to pull away in the fourth quarter, looking to take crucial Game 5 in Cleveland, but the Cavs came back. Boston managed to hold an eight point lead with 3:18 left, 106-98. Two Orlando Woolridge baskets assisted by Rolando Blackman made it 106-102.

Cleveland tries to clamp down on the Celtics. Purvis Short gets to the line to push the lead to 108-102 with 1:42 left. Kevin McHale got two of his own to put it back to four. Gus Williams made one to make it 109-104. The free throw line battle keeps going as Gerald Wilkins made one to cut the line to 109-105. Gus Williams made one, but then McHale just outright made a shot to make it a one-possession game, 110-107.

Larry Bird hits a dagger from the baseline to make it 112-107 with 45 seconds left. Rolando Blackman takes the ball himself and just launches a three and hits it! 112-110, 35 seconds left! Cleveland plays great defense and forces a Bird miss, but Bird gets a tip-in to push the lead by four with 8 seconds left! Cleveland struggles to get a shot off and while Rolando Blackman hits a jumper, time runs out on the Cavs! The Celtics pull ahead 3-2 in a clutch victory in Cleveland!

Celtics 114, CAVALIERS 112 (Celtics lead 3-2)

Game 6 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #3 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 3-2)

In a hard-fought battle, the Lakers proved to be the better team, outlasting the Mavericks to clinch a spot in their 4th straight NBA Finals. This victory was powered by the Lakers' impressive trio of Bernard King, Magic Johnson, and Robert Parish, who collectively dominated the game.

While the Mavericks played well, no player managed to have the standout performance that could have propelled them to victory. James Worthy had a solid game, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Lakers' balanced attack.

Now, the Lakers will be watching the Cavs-Celtics series closely, as they await their opponent in the quest for a three-peat. The Mavericks will once again bring back one of the most talented teams in the league, but they have to wait another year to get to the NBA Finals.

For Prediction purposes Bernard King led the series in scoring with 241 points.

Game 6 - #1 Cleveland Cavaliers at #2 Boston Celtics (Celtics lead 3-2)

It was a great run for the Cavs, but Game 6 was all Boston as the Celtics clinched a return to the NBA Finals. The Celtics led wire-to-wire, led by Larry Bird’s 28 and Larry Nance’s 32. Orlando Woolridge and Kevin McHale were okay, but the Cavs needed more than okay to push the series to Game 7.

The Celtics move on to face the Lakers in a rematch of the 1983 NBA Finals, where Boston defeated LA in five. The Cavs made huge strides this season to make the Conference Finals, and will be a favorite to reach the Finals next year.

For Prediction purposes Larry Bird led the series with 165 points.

CELTICS 104, Cavaliers 83 (Celtics win 4-2)

Cavaliers Stats
Kevin McHale: 18 PTS, 7 REB, 8/12 FG
Orlando Woolridge; 22 PTS, 11 REB, 2 BLK

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 28 PTS, 13 REB, 8 AST
Larry Nance: 32 PTS, 12 REB, 2 BLK
Purvis Short: 18 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST

NBA FINALS PREVIEW

Best of Seven (2-3-2)
#3 Los Angeles Lakers (53-29)
vs. #2 Boston Celtics (57-25)

Season Results

11/20 – CELTICS 103, Lakers 81
12/19 – LAKERS 98, Celtics 90

Series Preview
This is a rematch Magic Johnson and the Lakers have been waiting for. Three seasons ago the Celtics dominated the Lakers to win the NBA Title. Boston has yet to return to the Finals since that victory. The Lakers loss to Boston was the first NBA Finals trip in a strong of four in a row. LA won the two subsequent championships in 1984 against the Knicks and last season against the Bulls. The hype will mostly surround Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, but there are stars on both sides of the ball. Larry Nance has made the most of his opportunity in Boston as Bird’s wingman. Gus Williams, provides championship experience that extends to his Sonic days. LA of course as perhaps the best scorer in the league in Bernard King, and added Robert Parish, who was a champion in 1980 with the Sixers. It’s Magic vs. Bird, Lakers vs. Celtics, LA vs. Boston. It’s the NBA Finals.
