(All Box Scores to be added after the end of the season)

Game 1 - #8 San Antonio Spurs at #1 Dallas Mavericks

In Game 1 of the series, the Dallas Mavericks displayed a cohesive team performance to decisively overcome the San Antonio Spurs. The Mavericks saw all five starters contribute significantly, each scoring at least 14 points, in contrast to the Spurs, who only had two players manage to score more than eight points - Anthony Bowie with 25 and George Gervin with 15.

The second quarter proved to be pivotal, with the Mavericks outscoring the Spurs 32-12, effectively putting the game out of San Antonio's reach.

Game 1 - #5 Phoenix Suns at #4 Portland Trail Blazers

The Trail Blazers exploded in Game 1 against the Phoenix Suns, completely owning the court. Chris Mullin was the man of the hour for Portland, dropping 27 points while a total of seven Blazers players scored in double-digits. The Suns had no answer for anything Portland did all night.

Ricky Pierce was the only ray of hope for Phoenix, managing to find some rhythm with 24 points. However, fans were left bewildered as Clyde Drexler, usually a key player for the Suns, could only muster 8 points in what turned out to be a dismal performance.

TRAIL BLAZERS 120, Suns 83 (Trail Blazers lead 1-0)

Suns Stats

Ricky Pierce: 24 PTS, 11/18 FG
Arvydas Sabonis: 16 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST

Game 1 - #7 Spirits of St. Louis at #2 Sacramento Kings

In a fierce display of power and control, the Sacramento Kings made an emphatic statement in Game 1 of their NBA playoff series against the Spirits of St. Louis, cruising to a 102-79 victory. The Kings' dynamic duo of Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing stole the show, wreaking havoc on both ends of the court. They combined for a colossal 47 points, a whopping 28 rebounds, and an intimidating 9 blocks, leaving the Spirits' big men helplessly stifled.

While Dale Ellis and Otis Birdsong tried to keep the Spirits' spirits high, contributing 17 points apiece, their efforts fell significantly short in the face of the Kings' dominance. If the Spirits aim to remain competitive in this series, they will need to find a way to neutralize the overwhelming force of Olajuwon and Ewing and step up their offensive game.

In this opening clash, the Kings clearly set the tone for the series. The Spirits, however, have a chance to reset and strategize ahead of the next game. But for now, the advantage and momentum are firmly with the Sacramento Kings.

KINGS 102, Spirits 79 (Kings lead 1-0)

Spirits Stats

Dale Ellis: 17 PTS, 4 REB
Otis Birdsong: 17 PTS, 3 STL

Kings Stats
Hakeem Olajuwon: 30 PTS, 15 REB, 2 STL, 3 BLK
Patrick Ewing: 17 PTS, 13 REB, 6 BLK

Game 1 – #6 Los Angeles Lakers at #3 Golden State Warriors

In a powerful start to their playoff journey, the Golden State Warriors soundly defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 1 of their series. Putting up an impressive 41 points in the first quarter, the Warriors made it clear they won't be easy prey as they were in the last three seasons when they lost to LA.

John Stockton stepped up with a remarkable 27-point, 8-assist, 5-steal performance for Golden State, standing toe-to-toe with Magic Johnson's 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists for the Lakers. Support from Darryl Dawkins and Andrew Toney, who each contributed more than 20 points, solidified the Warriors' dominance in this opening game.

WARRIORS 123, Lakers 95 (Warriors lead 1-0)

Lakers Stats

Magic Johnson: 26 PTS, 7 REB, 7 AST, 6 STL, 10/17 FG

Game 1 - #8 Baltimore Bullets at #1 Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons set a strong tone in the first game of their playoff series against the Baltimore Bullets, sailing to a convincing 140-113 victory. Detroit's offensive arsenal proved far too formidable for Baltimore to handle, as the Pistons demonstrated their top seeding status with a scintillating performance.

Tom Chambers was at the peak of his powers, pouring in an impressive 39 points to steer the Pistons to victory. Making a triumphant return to the playoffs, Micheal Ray Richardson delivered a solid performance with a double-double, notching up 19 points and 16 assists, along with 9 rebounds.

On the other side, Baltimore's Adrian Dantley provided a spark, tallying 24 points, but his solo efforts were not enough to combat the all-round power of the Pistons. The Bullets have a significant task ahead of them - they must find a way to halt the Pistons' offensive juggernaut and step up their defense if they hope to turn the tide in this series.

PISTONS 140, Bullets 113 (Pistons lead 1-0)

Bullets Stats

Adrian Dantley: 24 PTS, 7 REB, 4 AST, 4 STL
Alex English: 18 PTS, 8 REB, 5 AST

Game 1 - #5 Chicago Bulls at #4 New Jersey Nets

The opening game of the playoff series between the Chicago Bulls and the New Jersey Nets proved to be a one-sided affair. ‘Nique staged an impressive offensive show, hammering the Nets' defense with a monstrous 42-point performance. This demolition marked the second consecutive year in which the Bulls seized home-court advantage from the Nets in the opening game of their first-round playoff encounter, which should serve as a reminder that need to maintain their aggressive approach and avoid any complacency reminiscent of last season.

The Nets were left reeling, failing to match the offensive prowess displayed by the Bulls. Veteran guard Sidney Moncrief was the top scorer for New Jersey with 22 points, but his efforts fell far short of making a dent in Chicago's lead. The Nets now face a significant challenge to regroup and retaliate in the next game.

Bulls 122, NETS 90 (Bulls lead 1-0)

Bulls Stats

Dominique Wilkins: 42 PTS, 5 REB, 4 STL
Vinnie Johnson: 20 PTS, 5 REB, 4 AST, 4 STL

Game 1 - #7 Boston Celtics at #2 Miami Heat

In the first game of the playoff series between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat, the tides turned dramatically after the first half. The Celtics kicked off with an impressive start, taking a five-point lead by halftime. However, Michael Jordan delivered an outstanding performance the rest of the way that left the Celtics unable to respond.

Jordan single-handedly dismantled the Celtics' defense, contributing an impressive 37 points to Miami's final score. In contrast, Larry Bird was unable to match this scoring prowess, ending the game with 21 points.

In addition to Jordan's stellar play, Sam Perkins of the Heat also stepped up, notching up 21 points and 9 rebounds, further enhancing Miami's victory.

Despite the Celtics' balanced offensive contributions from Bird, Larry Nance, and Purvis Short, it wasn't enough to withstand the Heat's second-half onslaught. The Celtics will need to find an answer to Miami's potent offense to prevent further losses in this series.

HEAT 116, Celtics 106 (Heat lead 1-0)

Celtics Stats

Larry Bird: 21 PTS, 5 REB, 8 AST
Larry Nance: 18 PTS, 8 REB
Purvis Short: 18 PTS, 5 REB

Heat Stats
Michael Jordan: 37 PTS, 7 AST, 3 STL, 3 BLK
Sam Perkins: 21 PTS, 9 REB

Game 1 - #6 New Orleans Jazz at #3 Cleveland Cavaliers

Surprisingly, the Jazz took an early lead, but the Cavs were able to claw back. Still the Jazz wouldn’t give up as they tried to steal Game 1. Jeff Malone hit a jumper with 2:50 left that cut the Cavs lead to 99-97. Charles Barkley intercepts a Marvin Webster pass and runs the ball down the court, finding Malone, who finds Quintin Dailey to tie the game up at 99 with two minutes left.

Gerald Wilkins, having perhaps the best game of his career, hits a short jumper to put Cleveland back up two. Jeff Malone responds, making it 101-101. Barkley ends up breaking up another pass, and he finds Kurt Rambis to put the Jazz up 103-101! Wilkins scores again though, once again tying things up. Dailey scores for the Jazz as they go back up two with 52 seconds left. Wilkins, looking like his brothers out there, hits another shot and we’re tied at 105 with 27 seconds left.

The Jazz get a golden chance to take Game 1 as Rambis is fouled by Rolando Blackman with 7 seconds left as he was going up for a shot. Rambis drills both free throws with just seven seconds left. Orlando Woolridge hits a little hook shot with no time remaining, sending the game to overtime!

Unfortunately, that was New Orleans’ best chance, as the Cavs find a second wind and roll over the Jazz 17-5 in overtime to take Game 1.

CAVALIERS 124, Jazz 112 (OT) (Cavaliers lead 1-0)

Jazz Stats

Charles Barkley: 25 PTS, 13 REB, 4 STL
Detlef Schrempf: 16 PTS, 7 REB

Game 2 - #8 San Antonio Spurs at #1 Dallas Mavericks (Mavericks lead 1-0)

In the second game of the series, the Dallas Mavericks once again flexed their offensive might, defeating the San Antonio Spurs by a score of 110-101. The Mavericks showed a fantastic team effort, with six players reaching double-digit scoring. This included a particularly strong performance from point guard Isiah Thomas, who orchestrated the team's offense impeccably.

However, the victory was bittersweet for the Mavericks as their center, Ralph Sampson, suffered a knee sprain in the fourth quarter. The prognosis isn't promising, casting doubt over his participation for the rest of the playoffs, assuming Dallas advances.

The Spurs, on the other hand, had a solid performance from their star player, George "Ice" Gervin, who scored 24 points. Despite this, they were unable to match Dallas' firepower or to impede their offensive onslaught. Heading back to San Antonio, the Spurs face a daunting task. They'll need to pull off a miracle to prevent an early exit from the series.

Mavericks 110, Spurs 101 (Mavericks lead 2-0)

Spurs Stats

George Gervin: 24 PTS, 5 REB
Anthony Bowie: 18 PTS, 7 REB
A.C. Green: 15 PTS, 9 REB

Game 2 - #5 Phoenix Suns at #4 Portland Trail Blazers (Trail Blazers lead 1-0)

The Trail Blazers took command of their first-round series against the Phoenix Suns with another decisive victory in Game 2. Chris Mullin led the Blazers once again, delivering an impressive 30-point performance. This balanced, efficient team continues to be a formidable adversary for Phoenix, who despite their efforts couldn't match Portland's dominance.

Phoenix's Clyde Drexler, had another rough outing, only managing 18 points on 22 attempts. While rookie Arvydas Sabonis and veteran Jack Sikma made notable contributions with 29 and 27 points respectively, their efforts were insufficient to topple Portland's formidable offense.

Phoenix will need Drexler to step it up if they expect to remain alive.

TRAIL BLAZERS 127, Suns 111 (Trail Blazers lead 2-0)

Suns Stats

Arvydas Sabonis: 29 PTS, 10 REB, 5 AST, 2 STL, 1 BLK

Game 2 - #7 Spirits of St. Louis at #2 Sacramento Kings (Kings lead 1-0)

With Patrick Ewing having a meltdown and Alvin Robertson putting on a show, the Spirits took the Kings to the limit in Game 2. With 1:27 left, Otis Birdsong grabbed his own offensive rebound and hit a shot that tied the game at 93. The Kings couldn’t find the basket after that, with Mark Eaton drawing a charge and Mike O’Koren missing shots. The Spirits couldn’t score another bucket either, with Robertson missing a dagger of a three. Terry Porter made a key steal with 23 seconds left and ultimately had a chance to win it with a three, but that missed too. The last 87 seconds led to no points from either team, and we went to overtime.

And just like that, the switch turned on for both teams. Neither team could be stopped in overtime. Robertson found Otis on a back screen to make it 107-104 Spirits with just 59 seconds left. Hakeem Olajuwon faked a post move and found an open Porter to cut it to 107-106 Spirits. Birdsong inexplicably loses the handle on the inbound, giving the Kings the ball back down one. Hakeem would fine O’Koren, who scores with 19 seconds left to give the Kings a 108-107 lead.

Sacramento clamped down on this last possession, not allowing St. Louis to find a good shot. Dale Ellis ended up with a semi-open look from the baseline as time expired…but it was no good, and the Spirits lost their best chance to make this a series. While Hakeem was great, Patrick Ewing was awful, going 6 for 25 and stifling his own team’s offense. Otis Birdsong took on a heavy load for the Spirits, scoring 39 on 39 shots with Robertson feeding him the ball, but it just fell short of being enough. The Spirits managed 112 field goal attempts, but only made 36.6% of them. While Ewing’s offense was bad, he did a great job again taking Buck Williams out of the series completely.

KINGS 108, Spirits 107 (OT) (Kings lead 2-0)

Spirits Stats

Otis Birdsong: 39 PTS, 7 REB
Alvin Robertson: 19 PTS, 13 REB, 11 AST
Dale Ellis: 17 PTS, 11 REB

Patrick Ewing: 15 PTS, 6 REB, 4 AST

Game 2 – #6 Los Angeles Lakers at #3 Golden State Warriors (Warriors lead 1-0)

A truly wild game through the 4th quarter. With the game tied with 12 minutes left, the Warriors pulled away in the 4th, putting the defending Western Conference Champion Lakers in an 0-2 hole, facing elimination. Neither team brought their defense, as custom in this “rivalry”.

While he didn’t shoot well, John Stockton’s 17 assists helped power the powerful Warriors offense. Andrew Toney dropped 35. Kiki Vandeweghe added 32. The Lakers, led by Magic, had four players score at least 23, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with Golden State. The Warriors look to get a victory in this “rivalry” by finishing off the Lakers at home.

WARRIORS 140, Lakers 134 (Warriors lead 2-0)

Lakers Stats

Magic Johnson: 23 PTS, 17 AST, 3 STL
Doc Rivers: 26 PTS, 7 AST
Bernard King: 24 PTS, 7 REB, 4 AST

Game 2 - #8 Baltimore Bullets at #1 Detroit Pistons (Pistons lead 1-0)

The Bullets got the memo from Game 1 and upped the offensive pressure. Adrian Dantley was on fire all game as the Bullets mounted a comeback in the 4th quarter. While it’s a game they never led, Dantley’s lay-up with 22 seconds left brings the Bullets to within two, 124-122.

Kelvin Ransey sends Micheal Ray Richardson to the line, and Richardson gives Baltimore some hope as he misses the second free throw. Alex English grabs the rebounds, 19 seconds left, Bullets down three. The Bullets though, can’t find a good look at a three. Sam Bowie makes a risky play as he tries to draw a foul…and while he hits the shot, he doesn’t get the call! Detroit inbounds with a couple of seconds left and survives…and the Bullets blow a chance to send this one to overtime.

Dantley had 42 to lead the Bullets, but Tom Chambers’ 33-16 was enough to power Detroit to a 2-0 lead.

PISTONS 125, Bullets 124 (Pistons lead 2-0)

Bullets Stats

Adrian Dantley: 42 PTS, 11 REB, 12/21 FG, 18/18 FT

Game 2 - #5 Chicago Bulls at #4 New Jersey Nets (Bulls lead 1-0)

The Nets blew open Game 2 right away and the game was virtually over by halftime (63-38). Nets were led by Calvin Natt’s 28 points and Cliff Robinson’s 25. Nets, like last season, need to find at least one win in Chicago to regain home court advantage.

Game 2 - #7 Boston Celtics at #2 Miami Heat (Heat lead 1-0)

Michael Jordan
was simply unstoppable in Game 2 of Miami Heat's face-off against the Boston Celtics. With a dazzling display of his extraordinary skills, Jordan led the Heat to a resounding victory by scoring 56 points on just 25 shots, delivering one of the most efficient playoff performances in NBA history. This spectacular performance erased the stellar two-man game put up by Larry Bird and Larry Nance for the Celtics.

Despite the Celtics' strong defensive strategy and intelligent playmaking, their efforts were overshadowed by Jordan's phenomenal dominance. Boston now faces the daunting challenge of finding a way to contain MJ in the upcoming games at their home court; otherwise, their NBA Title defense might come to a premature end.

HEAT 119, Celtics 113 (Heat lead 2-0)

Celtics Stats

Larry Bird: 38 PTS, 7 REB, 6 AST
Larry Nance: 32 PTS, 13 REB, 3 STL

Game 2 - #6 New Orleans Jazz at #3 Cleveland Cavaliers (Cavaliers lead 1-0)

The Cleveland Cavaliers maintained their strong grip on the series as they secured a dominant victory over the New Orleans Jazz in Game 2. The Cavaliers' formidable trio of Kevin McHale, Rolando Blackman, and Orlando Woolridge took charge of the game, combining for a remarkable shooting percentage with 35 successful shots out of 47 attempts.

The Jazz, on the other hand, struggled to find their rhythm. The only bright spot came off the bench with Spud Webb managing to put up 18 points.

CAVALIERS 109, Jazz 87 (Cavaliers lead 2-0)

Game 3 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #8 San Antonio Spurs (Mavericks lead 2-0)

No Sampson no problem.

The Mavericks finished off the Spurs in Game 3, advancing to the Semi-Finals. James Worthy led the way for the Mavericks with 25, and Isiah added a 20-11. Thurl Bailey probably earned some big money this off-season with another strong playoff game in Sampson’s absence. He had 17 points and 9 rebounds.

The Spurs showed some life this season before nearly falling out of the playoffs. The Spurs continue to extend the George Gervin era as he still has three years on his deal. Really, it’s likely time to move on.

For prediction purposes James Worthy led the series in scoring with 57 points.

Mavericks 120, Spurs 102 (Mavericks win 3-0)

Mavericks Stats

James Worthy: 25 PTS, 7 REB, 1 STL, 1 BLK

Game 3 - #4 Portland Trail Blazers at #5 Phoenix Suns (Trail Blazers lead 2-0)

Game 3 of the series saw a remarkable shift in momentum as the Phoenix Suns emerged triumphant over the Portland Trail Blazers on their home court. The Suns managed to shrink the series lead to 2-1, thanks to an electrifying performance by Ricky Pierce, who notched up 32 points. Big men Arvydas Sabonis and Jack Sikma had an impressive outing, jointly securing 33 rebounds, a third of which were offensive boards.

Unfortunately for the Trail Blazers, only Darrell Walker seemed to be in his element, contributing 20 points. His efforts, however, couldn't compensate for the rest of the team's underwhelming performance.

SUNS 103, Trail Blazers 78 (Trail Blazers lead 2-1)

Game 3 - #2 Sacramento Kings at #7 Spirits of St. Louis (Kings lead 2-0)

The Spirits had another chance to get back into the series as Hakeem Olajuwon struggled for the Kings. Patrick Ewing, who had a poor Game 2, led the way for Sacramento. Still, the Spirits were in the game in the 4th.

With the Kings struggling to score, Alvin Robertson hit a 15-footer to make it 84-77 Spirits with 3:13 left. The Kings would call timeout, desperate to end this series as soon as possible. Danny Ainge hit a basket thanks to a good pass from rookie Kenny Walker to cut the lead to five. Ewing stuffs Otis Birdsong at the rim, and Hakeem gets a lay-up on the other end (only his 4th and 5th points of the game) to make it 84-81. Birdsong misses a three but grabs his own board, and eventually he finds Dale Ellis for a jumper on the baseline to push the lead back to five with 1:40 left.

Ewing quickly responds to make it 86-83, but Otis finds Robertson just as quickly to again push the lead to five. Danny Ainge gets fouled by Otis, and Birdsong hits both free throws, making it 88-85 with just 1:09 left. The Kings shut down the Spirits on the next possession, but Hakeem gets called for an illegal screen. Really tough day for Olajuwon. Buck Williams misses a shot but Otis Birdsong grabs the rebound. He plays keep away enough to drain the clock to nine seconds before he’s sent to the line. He makes one free throw, giving the Spirits a four point lead with 9 seconds left. Ainge is fouled instantly, and the Kings can’t get over the hump. There will be a Game 4.

Game 3 – #3 Golden State Warriors at #6 Los Angeles Lakers (Warriors lead 2-0)

Facing elimination in Game 3, the Los Angeles Lakers rose to the occasion, putting on a stellar performance to stay alive in the series against the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers' sizzling 51-point second quarter set the tone for the match, leaving the Warriors trailing.

The Lakers' resurgence was driven by Bernard King's outstanding 31-point performance, along with Magic Johnson's triple-double of 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. The Warriors, despite a decent third quarter, couldn't match the energy and efficiency of the Lakers. Golden State's offense was led by Andrew Toney with 22 points, followed by Dudley Bradley and John Stockton.

With this decisive victory, the Lakers have made it clear they're not ready to exit the playoffs just yet. They've reduced the Warriors' lead in the series to 2-1, and they'll be seeking to level the series in Game 4.

Game 3 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #8 Baltimore Bullets (Pistons lead 2-0)

Despite putting up a valiant fight, the Baltimore Bullets fell to the overpowering Detroit Pistons, who completed a clean 3-0 sweep on the Bullets' home turf. Baltimore's formidable trio - Sam Bowie, Alex English, and Adrian Dantley - did their best, combining for a commendable 65 points (although English was 9 for 31). However, they found themselves unable to contain Tom Chambers.

Chambers was the star of the show, recording a massive double-double with a staggering 44 points and 20 rebounds. He received ample support from Dennis Johnson, who chipped in with 20 points, ensuring the Pistons had the firepower to see off the Bullets. With this victory, the Pistons will now be watching the Bulls-Nets series closely, as they await their next challenge in the playoffs.

Baltimore has a few big off-season questions. Both English and Dantley are slated to hit the free agent market this off-season. Is English-Dantley-Bowie a foundation to which Baltimore can contend? How much money will they shell out to find out? English turns 34 next year, Dantley 32.

For fantasy purposes, Tom Chambers led the series in scoring with 116 points.

Game 3 - #4 New Jersey Nets at #5 Chicago Bulls (Series tied 1-1)

This one went down to the wire, as Dominique and The Squid led both of their teams in a hard-fought battle.

Terry Cummings hit a layup to put the Bulls up 108-103 with 4 minutes to go. Calvin Natt misses a three, but Andre Wakefield misses is own jumper. Natt misses another three, but Chicago turns the ball over on an illegal screen from Alton Lister. Nets are frozen though as Terry Tyler misses an easy layup from a feed from Moncrief. Moncrief forces Johnny Moore into a tough shot though and that misses. Moncrief finds Moses, who misses the short jumper but tips in his own miss, making it 108-105. That was the first basket in about 100 seconds as there’s 2:21 left.

‘Nique misses but Terry Cummings grabs the rebound. Moore finds ‘Nique, who slams the ball home to push Chicago Stadium in a frenzy. This puts the Bulls back up 110-105 with 1:39 left. Cliff Robinson quickly scores, and the Bulls again can’t convert a basket. Moses Malone is called for an illegal screen and he’s not happy about that call. Vinnie Johnson and Johnny Moore break New Jersey’s press, but Johnson shockingly misses an easy layup and Moses grabs the board. Terry Catledge scores with 24 seconds left, 110-109 Bulls.

The Nets elect to play defense, but the Bulls grab a late offensive board and the Nets never get another chance to win…the Bulls hang on to take a 2-1 series lead.

Game 3 - #2 Miami Heat at #7 Boston Celtics (Heat lead 2-0)

The Boston Celtics clawed their way back into their series against the Miami Heat with a resounding victory in Game 3. Larry Bird and Michael Jordan went head-to-head, with Bird edging out Jordan to lead his team to victory.

The Celtics, driven by a phenomenal 34-21 run in the 4th quarter, overturned a series deficit and put themselves back in contention. Bird was stellar with 33 points, narrowly surpassing Jordan's 30-point contribution for the Heat. A standout performance from mid-season acquisition Michael Wiley, who came off the bench to score 27 points, played a crucial role in the Celtics' comeback.

Despite this setback, the Heat maintain a 2-1 lead in the series, setting the stage for a highly anticipated Game 4 where Miami will look to finish off Boston.

CELTICS 129, Heat 113 (Heat lead 2-1)

Game 3 - #3 Cleveland Cavaliers at #6 New Orleans Jazz (Cavaliers lead 2-0)

With the Superdome rocking the Jazz refused to lie down and go out with a whimper in Game 3, bursting out to a 43-24 first quarter lead. The Cavs were undeterred though, slowly making their way back through the game, leading to a finish that went down to the wire.

The Cavs had taken the lead late in the 4th and looked to extend it, but Kurt Rambis blocked Orlando Woolridge’s shot. Jazz down three, 113-110, with 2:07 left. Jamaal Wilkes hits a jumper from the wing to cut the lead to one. Gerald Wilkins misses for the Cavs and Charles Barkley grabs the rebound and rumbles down the court. He finds Rambis, but he misses. With a minute left, Rolando Blackman gets a one-on-one with Detlef Schrempf, and blows by him to put Cleveland back up 115-112.

Woolridge blocks Jeff Malone’s shot, but Malone recovers and finds Rambis, who scores with 34 seconds left to cut the lead back to one. The Jazz play defense and force a stop with five seconds left. Bill Cartwright struggled to inbound the ball, but he finds Wilkes. Wilkes though is immediately trapped by Wilkins and Kevin McHale and can’t get a shot off as the Cavs escape with the win and complete the sweep.

While swept, there’s nothing for the Jazz to feel bad about here. Two of the games could have went either way, and with Barkley on the roster it’s likely New Orleans will continue to get closer to contention each year.

For prediction purposes, Kevin McHale led the series in scoring with 85 points.

Game 4 - #4 Portland Trail Blazers at #5 Phoenix Suns (Trail Blazers lead 2-1)

The Phoenix Suns rallied to secure victory in Game 4, effectively leveling the series at 2-2 and pushing it into a decisive Game 5. Ricky Pierce was once again the hero for the Suns, putting up 33 points, and slightly eclipsing Chris Mullin's impressive 27 points for the Trail Blazers.

The Suns also benefited from a stellar performance by Arvydas Sabonis, who contributed 26 points to their victorious effort. Now, the stage is set for a thrilling Game 5 that will determine which of these two evenly-matched teams advances in the playoffs.

Game 4 - #2 Sacramento Kings at #7 Spirits of St. Louis (Kings lead 2-1)

With both Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing playing well, the Kings finished off the Spirits in St. Louis. The Spirits failed to score 100 in three of the four games against Sacramento and just didn’t have the defense to keep Sacramento at that low a total as well. Hakeem and Ewing combined for 58 points.

It’s likely the Spirits will bring back Dale Ellis, we’ll see if it takes a max contract for that to happen. With the main score other than Ellis locked up through 90-91, expect to see this team continue to make their way through the Western Conference over the next four years.

The Kings await the Warriors-Lakers winner.

For prediction purposes, Patrick Ewing led the series in scoring with 103 points.

Game 4 – #3 Golden State Warriors at #6 Los Angeles Lakers (Warriors lead 2-1)

In a hard-fought Game 4, the Los Angeles Lakers held their ground, defeating the Golden State Warriors and pushing the series into a decisive Game 5. Magic Johnson was in prime form, contributing an impressive 21 points along with 14 assists. Bernard King was also instrumental in the Lakers' victory, adding 27 points to their total.

Despite their loss, Kiki Vandeweghe of the Warriors was the top scorer of the game, racking up 33 points and confidently guaranteeing a Game 5 victory for his team. With both teams now evenly matched, the stage is set for an enthralling final showdown. Can the Warriors finally beat the Lakers in this “rivalry” (perhaps if they do, I’ll stop using the quotation marks)?

Game 4 - #4 New Jersey Nets at #5 Chicago Bulls (Bulls lead 2-1)

In a team-effort, the Bulls dominated the Nets to avenge last season’s four game loss and advance to the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. Four players for Chicago contributed 15 or more points, and the Nets surprisingly just had nothing for the Bulls. ‘Nique led the way with 25 in the blowout.

This concludes another disappointing playoff run for the Nets. Despite win totals of 63, 55, 56 and 55 the past 4 years the Nets could not get past Round 2 of the playoffs. Now some questions remain. What kind of contract will Calvin Natt get this off-season? Will the Nets try to get out of Moses Malone’s deal in some way? Will they run it back no matter what? A lot of questions will have to be answered.

As for the Bulls, they’ll meet division rival Detroit in the Semis.

For playoff prediction purposes Dominique Wilkins led the series in scoring with 125 points.

Game 4 - #2 Miami Heat at #7 Boston Celtics (Heat lead 2-1)

Michael Jordan’s
40 was not enough to finish off the defending NBA Champions as Boston forced Game 5. Jordan didn’t get much help, while Larry Bird dropped 31 and was aided by Larry Nance’s 24 and Purvis Short’s 22. Dexter Shouse even came off the bench to add 18. They’ll go back to Miami to decide the series.

Game 5 - #5 Phoenix Suns at #4 Portland Trail Blazers (Series tied 2-2)

In front of a shocked, sold out Memorial Coliseum the Phoenix Suns continued their momentum from Games 3 and 4 and completed the 0-2 comeback, defeating the Portland Trail Blazers to advance to the Western Conference Semi-Finals. Clyde Drexler finally woke up for Phoenix, scoring 27 and Arvydas Sabonis could not be stopped, dropping 26 points, and grabbing 19 rebounds.

Portland looked to be in complete control of the series, even heading into Game 5, but after a tied first quarter the game got away from them. Chris Mullin scored 22 but shot poorly. Despite this disappointing loss, the future still looks bright for Portland. They’ll need to make some decisions on Byron Scott and Darrell Walker, but most of their young players are still under contract for another one or two years.

The Suns will face off against the Mavericks in the Semis.

For prediction purposes, Ricky Pierce led the series in scoring with 121 points.

Game 5 – #6 Los Angeles Lakers at #3 Golden State Warriors (Series tied 2-2)

The Lakers reign is over.

The Warriors ended the Laker hold on the Western Conference in a thrilling Game 5. Golden State chipped away at the Lakers all game, matching them basket for basket. Kiki Vandeweghe dropped 41 points, and John Stockton added 17 assists and the Lakers just couldn’t keep up. Magic had another triple-double with a 19-11-11 and all three of Robert Parish, Marques Johnson and Bernard King scored 20+. Only Golden State added to Kiki’s 41 with six other players scoring double-digits. The Golden State offense was just too good on this night.

There are massive questions for the Lakers this off-season. For the first time in six years they won’t even be in the Conference Finals. Bernard King, despite the fact that he’ll turn 31 in December, will likely be due a max contract. Parish, who did not look good this year, is also due another contract. How about mid-season acquisition Doc Rivers? How will the Lakers handle these decisions?

The Warriors will advance and take on another California rival as the Hakeem-Ewing Kings await.

Kiki Vandeweghe led the series in scoring with 132 points.

Game 5 - #7 Boston Celtics at #2 Miami Heat (Series tied 2-2)

The Miami Heat destroyed the defending NBA Champion Boston Celtics back in Miami to advance to the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. The Celtics got nothing going other than Larry Bird’s 28 points. Boston shot 30 for 86 in the game and while they made 29 free throws, it all amounted to 90 points.

Of course Michael Jordan led the way for Miami with 29 points, but Miami’s supporting cast also showed up, with Clark Kellogg adding 27 off the bench. Miami led the game wire-to-wire, leaving Bird and co. stunned.

There’s little doubt the Celtics will run this back against next season as they have Bird and Purvis Short under contract though 1990, and Larry Nance though ’91. All are in the prime of their careers as well.

Miami will take on the Cavs in Round 2.

For prediction purposes, Michael Jordan led the series in scoring with 192 points.

Series Preview
There’s a sense of revenge for the Mavericks in this one. Two seasons ago an injured Mavericks team went up against the 6-seeded Suns and were resoundingly swept. The Suns missed the playoff last year, but now they’re back. The Suns sport a very strong four-man crew of Clyde Drexler, rookie Arvydas Sabonis, Ricky Pierce and veteran Jack Sikma. The Mavs have Isiah Thomas and James Worthy, but will be thin at center as Ralph Sampson, who played great against the Suns during the regular season, will likely miss the entire series regardless how long it goes (he may return for a Game 7). Can Dallas overcome this and avenge their loss from two seasons ago, or will a streaking Suns team again take down the higher seeded Mavs?

One of the main stories of the regular season was the Warriors quest to catch the Kings for the #2 seed. They just missed, which may be crucial as the Kings will have home court advantage for the series. This series will boil down to two questions. What does Golden State have to throw at Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing, and/or can the Warriors offense overpower every other position on the court. Kiki Vandeweghe, John Stockton and Andrew Toney have shown to be an unstoppable force on the offensive end all-season. We’ll see which Pacific Division team comes out on top.

Series Preview
This is a very difficult battle for the Bulls. Over the past couple of seasons, Detroit built a team defensively that was designed to stop the likes of Dominique Wilkins. With All-Defensive stalwarts Dennis Johnson and Michael Cooper, ‘Nique will have his hands full. This will have to be a series where Terry Cummings has some big games. Tom Chambers may be unstoppable on offense, but he’s very beatable on the other end and if Cummings can off-set Chambers, the Bulls will have a chance. Vinnie Johnson, Johnny Moore, Craig Ehlo, someone on the Bulls will have to step up and help ‘Nique score buckets. We know Micheal Ray Richardson and David Thompson could go off on any day. This is a tough one for Chicago, but it’s not impossible.

Series Preview
One thing is clear. The Miami Heat need to give Michael Jordan some help if they are to defeat Cleveland. The Cavs played the Heat very well throughout the season due to excellent play from the front court on the offensive and defensive end. If Sam Perkins can’t get going, the Heat won’t win. Kevin McHale and Orlando Woolridge have dominated the Heat all season long. Still, if MJ gets some help, perhaps from Derek Harper, the Heat may be able to pull out the victory regardless of what happens in the front court. The Cavs goal will be to hold MJ to under 35 each game. Miami does have home court advantage, which should only help matters.

Game 1 - #3 Golden State Warriors at #2 Sacramento Kings

The Golden State Warriors clawed their way back from a significant 22-point deficit in the 1st quarter to stun the Sacramento Kings on their home floor. The Warriors, showing immense grit and resilience, managed to regain the lead by the end of the third quarter. From then on, they traded baskets with the Kings and managed to maintain their edge, closing out the game with a three-point victory.

Kiki Vandeweghe led the charge for the Warriors, putting up an impressive 33 points. The Kings received solid performances from their dynamic duo, Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing, but it wasn't enough to overcome the resilient Warriors.

This surprising road victory gives the Warriors an early edge in the series.

Game 1 - #3 Cleveland Cavaliers at #2 Miami Heat

In an intense match that was tied going into the 4th quarter, the Cleveland Cavaliers showed their mettle and overpowered the Miami Heat. This win allows the Cavaliers to steal home court advantage from the Heat right off the bat.

The trio of Kevin McHale, Orlando Woolridge, and Rolando Blackman was outstanding for Cleveland, collectively scoring 72 points. In contrast, the Heat struggled to find a comparable response. While Michael Jordan delivered an exceptional performance with 37 points, he lacked the necessary support from his teammates to secure the victory. If the Heat aim to advance past the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals for the first time, they will need to significantly step up their game.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers, having reached the Eastern Conference Finals last year, are looking to repeat their success.

Cavaliers 110, HEAT 101 (Cavaliers lead 1-0)

Kevin McHale: 33 PTS, 13 REB

Game 2 - #5 Phoenix Suns at #1 Dallas Mavericks (Mavericks lead 1-0)

The Phoenix Suns dominated Game 2, thanks largely to the electrifying play of Ricky Pierce and Clyde Drexler. Their combined prowess at the perimeter, along with an exceptional performance from Arvydas Sabonis, overwhelmed the Dallas Mavericks. Sabonis outmatched Thurl Bailey in the paint, disrupting Dallas' game strategy. Another massive factor in the Sun’s victory: Phoenix took 24 three pointers and hit 12 while Dallas missed all 13 of their attempts.

Isiah Thomas of the Mavericks once again racked up 19 assists, but it was not enough to counteract the Suns' offensive onslaught. With this win, the Suns wrestled control of the series away from Dallas as they head back home to Phoenix.

Suns 121, MAVERICKS 106 (Series tied 1-1)

Suns Stats

Ricky Pierce: 29 PTS, 5 REB

Game 2 - #3 Golden State Warriors at #2 Sacramento Kings (Warriors lead 1-0)

The Sacramento Kings bounced back in Game 2, effectively shutting down the dynamic offense of the Golden State Warriors. This was a stark contrast to the previous game, where the Kings defense faltered. In Game 2, they managed to prevent any Warrior player from having a breakout game.

The Kings' Hakeem Olajuwon was in great form, contributing a solid 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists. The series is now even, but the Warriors managed to achieve their goal of securing a split on the road, gaining the home-court advantage for the next two games.

KINGS 111, Warriors 92 (Series tied 1-1)

John Stockton: 19 PTS, 9 AST

Game 2 - #5 Chicago Bulls at #1 Detroit Pistons (Bulls lead 1-0)

The Bulls put on all kinds of pressure in Game 2 as Terry Cummings and Tom Chambers went to war. Detroit held a seven-point lead heading into the 4th quarter, but the Bulls powered all the way back. With 1:55 left Cummings gets a perfect pass from Johnny Moore to tie the game at 102. The Bulls would eventually foul Benoit Benjamin, who makes two clutch free throws to put Detroit back up by two. Cummings looks to respond, but ends up finding Dominique Wilkins for a jam to tie the game up again! 47 seconds left.

Johnny Moore finds a steal but Benjamin blocks Cummings’ shot attempt. Detroit brings it back down the court and Micheal Ray Richardson hits a dagger with 12 seconds left to put Detroit back up 106-104.

‘Nique gets the ball but can’t get by Dennis Johnson or Michael Cooper. He finds Cummings who hits a quick hook off the glass to tie the game and send it to overtime!

Detroit took a three-point lead 114-111 after two DJ free throws with 2:09 left in overtime. Moore hits a couple of free throws to bring it back to one, but the Pistons reel off five straight points to avoid going down in a 0-2 hole.

Game 2 - #3 Cleveland Cavaliers at #2 Miami Heat (Cavaliers lead 1-0)

The Miami Heat bounced back big in Game 2, displaying a breathtaking offensive performance that left the Cleveland Cavaliers trailing in their wake. The Heat managed to rack up an astonishing 82 points in the first half, establishing a lead that proved insurmountable for the Cavaliers.

Notably, this time around, the victory was a collective effort, as every member of the Heat stepped up to contribute significantly to the scoreline. Michael Jordan, usually the primary point scorer, contributed a "modest" 29 points in a well-rounded performance by the team. The series is now tied at 1-1, setting up an exciting contest moving forward.

Game 3 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #5 Phoenix Suns (Series tied 1-1)

The Phoenix Suns seized a 2-1 series lead over the Dallas Mavericks, courtesy of an inspired performance from Clyde Drexler. Drexler, who had somewhat underperformed earlier in the playoffs, returned to form with a game-high 30 points, making this perhaps the most important game of his season so far.

He received substantial support from teammates Ricky Pierce and Arvydas Sabonis, who contributed 25 and 23 points, respectively. Dallas, on the other hand, simply couldn't muster the firepower to keep up with the Suns' high-scoring trio.

The absence of Ralph Sampson was keenly felt in this game, with Sabonis dominating the boards with 16 rebounds. Thurl Bailey had a strong game for the Mavericks with 16 points, 18 rebounds, and 6 blocks, but it was Sampson's offensive prowess that Dallas sorely missed. Heading into Game 4, the Mavericks must find a solution to this issue or risk falling further behind in the series.

Game 3 - #2 Sacramento Kings at #3 Golden State Warriors (Series tied 1-1)

The Warriors looked to have Game 3 well in hand before a furious comeback by the Kings in the 4th quarter. Golden State had led 30-12 after the 1st, but the Kings refused to give up.

With 4:17 left, the Warriors led by 13 before the Kings came storming back. Terry Porter hit a layup after a feed from Hakeem. Darryl Dawkins brought it back to a 13-point lead, but then Patrick Ewing hit two free throws. Hakeem would hit a jumper from the free throw line to make it 106-97 with 3:36. With another miss from Golden State, Porter hit a straight away three and suddenly it was only 106-100 Warriors!

Hakeem steals a pass out of the GS timeout and Ewing scores to make it 106-102 as the Warriors collapse is nearly complete. Olajuwon then blocks Dawkins, takes it himself and is fouled on his way to the basket. Two free throws later and it’s a two-point game. Another Golden State turnover leads to Danny Ainge free throws, and the game is tied at 106 with 2:10 left!

After another Warrior timeout John Stockton finds Kiki Vandeweghe to end the King run and give the Warriors back the lead. Ewing ties it at 1:41, 108-108. Dawkins escapes Hakeem and gets a dunk to regain the two point lead once again. The Kings fire runs out though as they suddenly can’t convert. Stockton gets to the line with only 10 seconds left and puts the Warriors up by four, and the Kings comeback just falls short.

WARRIORS 112, Kings 110 (Warriors lead 2-1)

Game 3 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #5 Chicago Bulls (Series tied 1-1)

The Detroit Pistons bounced back forcefully in Game 3, utterly dominating the Chicago Bulls on their home court at the Chicago Stadium. In a stunning turnaround, the Bulls were only able to amass 76 points from 97 field goal attempts, whereas the Pistons managed to put up 105 points from just 76 attempts.

One narrative that's becoming clear in this series is Detroit's successful strategy of slowing down Dominique Wilkins. Despite his reputation as a high scorer, Wilkins hasn't managed to notch up more than 25 points in any single game this series.

Tom Chambers, the Pistons' leading scorer, only managed 20 points in Game 3. Nevertheless, it was more than enough to lead all scorers and put the Pistons in the driver's seat. Having looked in firm control earlier, the Bulls are now in a precarious position as the Pistons have regained control of the series.

Game 3 - #3 Cleveland Cavaliers at #2 Miami Heat (Series tied 1-1)

The Cleveland Cavaliers managed to accomplish what few teams can - they shut down Michael Jordan in Game 3. The Cavs' defense was exceptional, holding Jordan to just 24 points on 23 field goal attempts. This game could be a crucial turning point in the series, showing that the Cavs have the defensive strategies to effectively contain Jordan's impact on the game.

On the offensive end, Cleveland was led by Rolando Blackman and Kevin McHale, who delivered strong performances with 29 and 24 points respectively.

This victory puts Cleveland in the driver's seat in the series, as they now hold a 2-1 lead.

Game 4 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #5 Phoenix Suns (Suns lead 2-1)

In Game 4 of the series between the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix took a decisive lead. They managed to push past the Mavericks, putting the top-seeded team on the verge of elimination.

James Worthy put up a fight, leading Dallas with an impressive 38 points. However, the center position remained a weak spot for the Mavericks, allowing Arvydas Sabonis of the Suns to capitalize on the opportunity. Sabonis dominated with 33 points, making 15 out of 19 field goal attempts, and contributed an additional 12 rebounds. Jack Sikma and Clyde Drexler also had notable performances, each scoring over 20 points, and the Mavericks couldn't match the Suns' high scoring rate.

Now, the series is moving back to Dallas. The question is whether the Mavericks will be able to rally and make a comeback. The pressure is certainly on, as another loss would mean the end of their playoff run.

Game 4 - #2 Sacramento Kings at #3 Golden State Warriors (Warriors lead 2-1)

In Game 4 of the series between the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors, Hakeem Olajuwon proved instrumental in leading the Kings to a significant road win. With a remarkable performance of 38 points and 17 rebounds, Hakeem was simply too much for the Warriors to overcome.

Despite Kiki Vandeweghe's best efforts, contributing 38 points for the Warriors, the strength of Hakeem's all-around game was the decisive factor. The Warriors started strong with a 40-point first quarter, but then they hit a wall, scoring just 6 points in the second quarter. This dramatic shift completely altered the momentum of the game, allowing the Kings to seize the win.

Now, with the series tied at 2-2, the Kings regain home court advantage as the teams head back to Sacramento for a critical Game 5.

Kevin McHale (35 points) and Rolando Blackman (28 points) did what they could, but no one was able to stop MJ. The Heat also got some help from Clark Kellogg’s 21 points off the bench.

Game 5 - #5 Phoenix Suns at #1 Dallas Mavericks (Suns lead 3-1)

Game 5 proved to be a turning point for the Dallas Mavericks as they successfully dismantled the Phoenix Suns on their home court, managing to avoid elimination. James Worthy, who has been performing phenomenally throughout this series, spearheaded the Mavericks' offensive efforts with an impressive 27 points.

Although the Suns still maintain an overall series lead, this significant loss means they'll need to regroup and bring their best performance to Game 6 in order to win the series.

A potential development to watch: the Mavericks' Ralph Sampson may make a comeback in Game 7, assuming the series progresses that far. This could potentially shift the balance of the series, given Sampson's significant contributions on the court.

Game 5 - #3 Golden State Warriors at #2 Sacramento Kings (Series tied 2-2)

Game 5 of this series saw the Sacramento Kings bring their all, exposing the vulnerabilities of the Golden State Warriors' defense while dominating the boards in a significant victory.

This was an impressive team-wide effort from the Kings, who usually rely heavily on their star players Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing for scoring. This time, they showcased their depth as seven players managed to score in double digits. Both Olajuwon and Ewing contributed 22 points each, while Sedale Threatt chipped in an additional 20.

On the Warriors' side, Kiki Vandeweghe put up a valiant effort, leading all scorers with a massive 41-point performance.

Game 5 - #3 Cleveland Cavaliers at #2 Miami Heat (Series tied 2-2)

Despite a heroic 43-point performance from Michael Jordan, the Cavaliers emerged as the victors in Game 5, taking a crucial away win. Jordan's teammates couldn't match his output, which was in stark contrast to the Heat's earlier team win in the series.

The Cavaliers, on the other hand, saw an impressive display from Kevin McHale, who shone on both sides of the court. Together with Orlando Woolridge and Rolando Blackman, they contributed a massive 70 points to their team's total.

With the series moving back to Cleveland, the Heat are indeed in deep trouble. The Cavaliers now have the chance to wrap up the series on their home court.

Cavaliers 117, HEAT 108 (Cavaliers lead 3-2)

Cavaliers Stats

Kevin McHale: 20 PTS, 7 REB
Orlando Woolridge: 20 PTS, 5 REB

Game 6 - #1 Dallas Mavericks at #5 Phoenix Suns (Suns lead 3-2)

A valiant effort from the Mavericks fell short as they were eliminated by the Suns for the second time in three seasons. The absence of key player Ralph Sampson due to injury seemed to have made all the difference for Dallas.

Ricky Pierce was the catalyst for Phoenix, putting up an impressive 27 points, with Clyde Drexler also contributing significantly with 21 points. The Mavericks got stellar performances from James Worthy, who scored 34 points, and Isiah Thomas, who added 28 points. Unfortunately for Dallas, their teammates couldn't match their output, and ultimately, the team came up short.

The Mavericks should still contend for the next few years as Worthy and Isiah are locked up for the next half-decade. They’ll likely have to shell out a seven-year max for Sampson this off-season.

The Suns will face the Warriors-Kings winner in their second Western Conference Finals in three years.

For prediction purposes James Worthy led the series in scoring with 194 points.

SUNS 109, Mavericks 102 (Suns win 4-2)

Game 6 - #2 Sacramento Kings at #3 Golden State Warriors (Kings lead 3-2)

If the Warriors make a run to the Finals, this will be known as the Danny Schayes game. Complimenting Kiki Vandeweghe’s 30 points, Schayes scored 29 and grabbed 13 rebounds, outplaying Patrick Ewing and helping the Warriors force Game 7.

Ewing led the Kings with 26, and Hakeem Olajuwon had another all-around game with 18 points, 17 rebounds and 6 blocks, but the Warriors offense proved to be a bit too much. John Stockton added 21 points and 10 assists as well for Golden State.

We head back to Sacramento for Game 7.

WARRIORS 120, Kings 112 (Series tied 3-3)

Hakeem Olajuwon: 18 PTS, 17 REB, 6 BLK
Patrick Ewing: 26 PTS, 9 REB, 4 AST

Game 6 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #5 Chicago Bulls (Pistons lead 3-2)

A powerful attack by Tom Chambers, Michael Cooper, and Dennis Johnson (73 points total) overwhelmed the Bulls, sending the Detroit Pistons to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Bulls, for better or worse, looked like the Bulls of old, with Dominique leading the way with 36 but not getting much to help him. Terry Cummings, who played well against Tom Chambers for most of the series, was completely outplayed here.

The Bulls will have some questions to answer in free agency this off-season. Will committed to Cummings and Wilkins, Alton Lister, Johnny Moore, Craig Ehlo, and Alvan Adams all are looking to hit the free agent market.

This is the farthest the Pistons have made it in the playoffs in over 25 years. They made the Western Divisional Finals in 1962, and last made the NBA Finals back when they were in Fort Wayne.

For prediction purposes Tom Chambers led the series in scoring with 184 points.

Pistons 117, BULLS 108 (Pistons win 4-2)

Pistons Stats

Tom Chambers: 27 PTS, 6 REB
Michael Cooper: 23 PTS, 5 REB, 8 AST
Dennis Johnson: 23 PTS
Micheal Ray Richardson: 7 PTS, 7 REB, 14 AST, 2 STL, 2 BLK

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 36 PTS, 15 REB, 5 AST

Game 6 - #3 Cleveland Cavaliers at #2 Miami Heat (Cavaliers lead 3-2)

There were no heroics in Game 6 as the Cavaliers punched their second straight ticket into the Eastern Conference Finals. While Michael Jordan led all scorers with 26, the Cavaliers had three players score 20+ (McHale, Woolridge, and Blackman) and Miami just didn’t have the firepower to keep up.

While the past two seasons showed growth for the Heat in losing in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, this season has to be characterized as a disappointment. The Heat will likely look very similar next season, and with Michael Jordan they are obviously a contender.

The Cavs lost in the Eastern Conference Finals last year to Boston. To do better, they’ll need to defeat Detroit.

For prediction purposes, Michael Jordan led the series in scoring with 205 points.

CAVALIERS 106, Heat 95 (Cavaliers win 4-2)

Heat Stats

Michael Jordan: 26 PTS, 8 REB, 5 AST, 2 STL

Cavaliers Stats
Kevin McHale: 22 PTS, 10 REB, 4 BLK
Orlando Woolridge: 20 PTS, 12 REB, 4 AST
Rolando Blackman: 22 PTS
Jim Paxson: 17 PTS, 7 AST, 3 STL

***

Game 7 - #3 Golden State Warriors at #2 Sacramento Kings (Series tied 3-3)

A close game throughout, the Warriors shocked the Kings by building a small lead in the third and never letting the Kings bring it back. The Kings never seemed out of it, but as time expired they couldn’t get the stops needed despite having two of the best defensive players in the league.

This victory was more well-rounded for Golden State. Kiki Vandeweghe had 25. John Stockton delivered the ball wherever he wanted to and finished with 24 points and 18 assists. Andrew Toney added 21 off the bench. The Kings got big performances from Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing (63 points, 29 rebounds combined), but the Warriors have proven that they have enough weapons to overcome.

This is the second straight season the Kings dropped Game 7 at home in the Western Conference Semi-Finals. While they’ll look ride behind the Olajuwon-Ewing tandem for the foreseeable future, they do need some improvement from the wings and guard positions if they want to be able to hang with deeper teams.

The Warriors will face the Suns in an unlikely Western Conference Finals.

For prediction purposes Kiki Vandeweghe led the series in scoring with 214.

Warriors 119, KINGS 112 (Warriors win 4-3)

Warriors Stats

Kiki Vandeweghe: 25 PTS, 7 REB, 4 AST
John Stockton: 24 PTS, 18 AST, 6 STL
Andrew Toney: 21 PTS
Danny Schayes: 13 PTS, 16 REB, 4 AST

Kings Stats
Hakeem Olajuwon: 28 PTS, 19 REB, 2 STL
Patrick Ewing: 35 PTS, 10 REB, 3 BLK

Series Preview
Perhaps an unexpected Western Conference Finals. The high-powered Warriors have shown they can beat teams in a multitude of ways. Kiki Vandeweghe has been an unstoppable scorer all playoffs. Andrew Toney has shown he can take up the scoring burden if need be as well. John Stockton has played the point guard position perfectly. Darryl Dawkins and Danny Schayes have been effective in the frontcourt. Dudley Bradley has worked hard to defend the opposing team’s best scorer. The Warriors have a lot of weapons. But the Suns have a lot of weapons as well. Ricky Pierce, Clyde Drexler, and rookie Arvydas Sabonis have all led Phoenix in scoring in these playoffs. Sabonis has especially proven to be difficult to for opposing teams to deal with. The Warriors seem like the better team, but the Suns have heard that all playoffs.

Series Preview
This Central Division rivalry features the best and 4th best defenses in basketball. Cleveland’s defense is led by Kevin McHale, who will have his work cut out for him having to guard Detroit’s scoring monster Tom Chambers all series. On the flip side Detroit has a lot of defensive at various positions. Benoit Benjamin will look to hinder for McHale and Orlando Woolridge. Detroit will also send Michael Cooper and Dennis Johnson to patrol the court. Cleveland will counter with Gerald Wilkins, a strong defender in his own right. He will likely be out there to make sure Micheal Ray Richardson struggles to run the offense for Detroit. There are a lot of players in this series that could become the key to determine the winner. McHale, Woolridge, Rolando Blackman, Chambers, Cooper, DJ and Richardson, if any one of them has a monster series that will likely determine the winner.

Game 1 - #5 Phoenix Suns at #3 Golden State Warriors

Clyde Drexler
, who despite Phoenix’s success in the playoffs so far hasn’t had a big playoffs, woke up big time in Game 1. He led the Suns the whole way. The Suns led 91-76 heading into the fourth quarter…but then the hometown Warriors got hot.

The Warriors went on a tear in the 4th quarter, and with five minutes left had outscored the Suns 28-15 in the fourth, making it a 106-104 game! The Suns did what they could to hold the Warriors off, but a Drexler three-pointer with just 1:46 left missed with the Suns only holding onto a 111-110 lead. Dudley Bradley would miss a shot, but he would steal the ball from Brad Davis to hold onto possession for Golden State. Darryl Dawkins tries to take the lead, but misses a semi-open layup! The Suns failed to push the lead to three or four though and Golden State had another chance. Bradley gets fouled on a shot by Drexler, and his two free throws give the Warriors their first lead since the early 1st quarter! 112-110 Warriors! 25 seconds left.

Jack Sikma tries to make something happen for the Suns. He can’t and his pass to Sabonis is deflected and stolen by John Stockton! Stockton gets fouled with 10 seconds left…but only makes one-of-two! The Suns still have a chance. Out of the timeout Sabonis finds Ricky Pierce, but Pierce’s jumper just misses and the Warriors complete the huge comeback and win Game 1! The Suns waste a 48-point performance Clyde Drexler. The Warriors outscored the Suns 37-20 in the fourth to win.

Game 1 - #3 Cleveland Cavaliers at #1 Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons came out swinging in Game 1 of their series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, establishing a strong early lead that the Cavaliers just couldn't overcome. Tom Chambers was a force for Detroit, putting up 31 points in the game. The Pistons had a balanced offensive attack, with six players scoring in double digits.

Despite a strong performance from Kevin McHale, who scored 38 points, the Cavaliers just couldn't match Detroit's offensive output. The Pistons managed to stifle the rest of the Cavs lineup, leaving McHale to shoulder most of the offensive load.

This strong start for Detroit puts them in an advantageous position moving forward in these Eastern Conference Finals.

Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals saw a dominant performance by Kiki Vandeweghe, who scored an impressive 48 points, leading the Golden State Warriors to a convincing victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Clyde Drexler, who was coming off his own 48-pointer in Game 1, was ejected from the game in the third quarter after receiving two technical fouls. The second came after a dispute over a foul call against him, following a tie-up with John Stockton. Drexler was only able to contribute 4 points in his limited time on the court.

With this victory, the Warriors have now taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the series as they head to Phoenix.

Game 2 - #3 Cleveland Cavaliers at #1 Detroit Pistons (Pistons lead 1-0)

Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals was largely a repeat of Game 1. The Detroit Pistons once again showed their strength and balance in their victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Even though their star player, Tom Chambers, fouled out after contributing just 18 points in 24 minutes, the Pistons managed to keep their composure and secured another win.

On the Cavaliers side, Kevin McHale continued to perform at a high level, however, his standout play alone wasn't enough to change the outcome. As the series moves to Cleveland, the Cavs will need to find new strategies and gather strength to turn this series around.

Game 3 - #3 Golden State Warriors at #5 Phoenix Suns (Warriors lead 2-0)

Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals saw a significant shift in dynamics as the series moved to Phoenix. The Suns managed to dominate the Golden State Warriors and secure their first win in the series.

Clyde Drexler spearheaded the Suns' attack with an outstanding performance, scoring 36 points. Arvydas Sabonis was a force to be reckoned with on the boards, hauling in 19 rebounds. The Suns' defense seemed to have stifled the usually high-octane offense of the Warriors, who shot a mere 38.3% from the field and struggled to find their rhythm throughout the game.

Kiki Vandeweghe led the scoring for the Warriors with 23 points, but his efficiency was questionable as he needed 24 shots to achieve that tally.

Game 3 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #3 Cleveland Cavaliers (Pistons lead 2-0)

The Cavaliers played much better at home, but the Pistons were still tough all night. The Pistons were close to taking a 3-0 lead, but Kevin McHale was sent to the line with 15 seconds left with Cleveland down two. McHale, with a third straight big game, knocked down both free throws to tie the game. Micheal Ray Richardson took the potential game winner for the Pistons, but his shot went off the side of the rim and we headed to overtime.

In overtime, Orlando Woolridge hit a free throw to put Cleveland up 116-113 with 1:33 to go. From here, the Pistons defense took over. Tom Chambers made it a 1 point game, and Cleveland turned the ball over with 21 seconds left. Chambers then drains a sick three-pointer in McHale’s face to put Detroit up 118-116 with 10 seconds left! Rolando Blackman’s shot misses, and the Pistons defeat the Cavaliers in Cleveland, in overtime, to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

Game 4 - #3 Golden State Warriors at #5 Phoenix Suns (Warriors lead 2-1)

The Warriors attempted another furious 4th quarter comeback, but this time couldn’t quite make it all the way back. Led by Ricky Pierce’s 46 points, the Suns tied the Western Conference Finals 2-2. Pierce refused to be stopped all night, taking 40 shots to reach his 46 points, but he wore out defensive specialist Dudley Bradley.

Golden State got great performances from their scorers Kiki Vandeweghe (29 points) and Andrew Toney (26 points), but with no one stopping Pierce it didn’t matter. It’s now a best-of-three heading back to California.

Game 4 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #3 Cleveland Cavaliers (Pistons lead 3-0)

The Cavaliers refused to lie down and go out easily, but unfortunately the same issue that plagued them in their Game 3 loss showed up in Game 4.

Cleveland led 104-99 with 3:49 left. Butch Lee would make a free throw with 3:28 left…and the Cavs would never score again. The Pistons completely took over on both ends of the court for the last three minutes of the game. Cleveland’s defense held Detroit at bay for a little while. Detroit would tie at 105 thanks to Tom Chambers free throws. Chambers would eventually give the Pistons the lead with 1:08 left, and that was that. The Pistons completed the sweep and will head to their first NBA Finals since their Fort Wayne days.

For the second straight season the Cavs have fallen in the Eastern Conference Finals. Their big three of Kevin McHale, Orlando Woolridge, and Rolando Blackman are all locked into multi-year deals. It seems like they’ll need a big upgrade at the guard position to make it to the next level, but it is questionable how they’ll be able to do that.

For prediction purposes, Kevin McHale led the series in scoring with 142 points

Pistons 108, CAVALIERS 105 (Pistons win 4-0)

Cavaliers Stats

Kevin McHale: 31 PTS, 13 REB, 5 BLK, 11/21 FG
Orlando Woolridge: 28 PTS, 11 REB, 4 BLK

Pistons Stats
Tom Chambers: 32 PTS
Michael Cooper: 22 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST
David Thompson: 18 PTS, 8/12 FG, 2/3 3P

Game 5 - #5 Phoenix Suns at #3 Golden State Warriors (Series tied 2-2)

The Golden State Warriors took control of the Western Conference Finals in Game 5 with a key victory on their home court. Kiki Vandeweghe put on an extraordinary scoring display with a 45-point performance, making it nearly impossible for the Phoenix Suns to keep pace.

The Suns struggled mightily on the offensive end, shooting a paltry 37% from the field. As a result, they were unable to match the offensive output of Vandeweghe and the rest of the Warriors.

With this loss, the Suns find themselves facing elimination as the series heads back to Phoenix for Game 6. The pressure is certainly on them to extend the series and keep their championship dreams alive.

WARRIORS 110, Suns 98 (Warriors lead 3-2)

Suns Stats

Ricky Pierce: 24 PTS, 7 REB
Clyde Drexler: 22 PTS, 6 REB, 7 AST, 2 BLK
Arvydas Sabonis: 11 PTS, 14 REB
Jack Sikma: 8 PTS, 22 REB, 6 AST

Warriors Stats
Kiki Vandeweghe: 45 PTS, 2 STL, 20/33 FG
John Stockton: 16 PTS, 10 AST
Danny Schayes: 12 PTS, 14 REB, 9 AST

Game 6 - #3 Golden State Warriors at #5 Phoenix Suns (Warriors lead 3-2)

With a trip to the NBA Finals hanging in the balance, both Golden State’s Kiki Vandeweghe and Phoenix’s Clyde Drexler went at it, and the result was a game that went down to the wire, with an epic ending.

Brad Davis put the Suns up 111-106 with 3:10 left with a jumper from the baseline. Andrew Toney responds with a layup to bring the Warriors to within three. The Suns miss but Arvydas Sabonis manages a steal. Phoenix can’t convert and Toney drives in and scores again, making it 111-110 Suns with just 1:58 left. Clyde Drexler misses a couple of shots and Dudley Bradley gives the Warriors the lead with 53 seconds left! 112-111!

Tyrone Corbin sends Sabonis to the line, and he drains two clutch free throws to put the Suns back up 113-112. Kiki Vandeweghe gets a nice pass from John Stockton, but Sabonis blocks the shot! Ricky Pierce tries to run out the clock but is fouled and sent to the line. Pierce misses the first but makes the second with just five seconds left.

Out of the Warrior timeout, Bradley finds Vandeweghe, who drills the three pointer to send the Warriors to the NBA Finals! Every fan in the Arizona Veterans Coliseum is left in shock…but eventually after booing Vandeweghe, they cheer their Phoenix Suns on a great comeback season.

The Warriors return to the NBA Finals for the 1st time since their 1975 Championship and will face Detroit.

Assuming Drexler returns, the Suns are in excellent shape. Arvydas Sabonis has shown to be an excellent first-year player, and the Pierce-Drexler combination has proven to be strong. If Drexler leaves in free agency though, then the Suns will have a lot of work to do.

For prediction purposes, Kiki Vandeweghe led the series in scoring with 214 points.

Warriors 115, SUNS 114 (Warriors win 4-2)

Warriors Stats

Kiki Vandeweghe: 38 PTS, 9 REB
John Stockton: 15 PTS, 7 REB, 12 AST, 8 STL
Danny Shayes: 18 PTS, 9 REB, 8/9 FG

Suns Stats
Clyde Drexler: 38 PTS, 8 REB, 2 STL
Brad Davis: 20 PTS, 7 REB, 11 AST
Jack Sikma: 15 PTS, 12 REB, 6 AST

Series Preview
For both teams, this is a Finals appearance years in the making. For the Warriors, their construction began with the Robert Parish for Darryl Dawkins trade in early 1980. The Warriors made him the centerpiece of the franchise and he ended up being the stable piece throughout their growth. The Warriors ended up adding two scorers who were both drafted to lead expansion teams. Kiki Vandeweghe was a regulated to fourth banana in Dallas, while Andrew Toney couldn’t get Miami over the hump and was dumped to Denver. Toney found his way to his 1st All-Star appearance this year and the 6th Man of the Year award. Toney and Vandeweghe are aided by tough forward Danny Schayes, who left Golden State’s Finals opponent to join the Warriors, Dudley Bradley, the former Defensive Player of the Year, and John Stockton, who as the #16 pick in the 1984 draft looks like a complete steal. On the other side of the court are the powerful Pistons. Their run began when they drafted Tom Chambers in 1981. Chambers quickly developed into one of the best scorers in all of basketball. The Pistons surrounded him with playoff and championship experienced veterans. Michael Cooper made several deep runs for the Pacers and is a former Defensive Player of the Year himself. Dennis Johnson is a former Finals MVP (1979, Sonics) and won a 2nd title with Houston in 1981. The Pistons also took a big chance this past off-season after a disappointing performance in last year’s playoffs, trading Fat Lever for New York’s Micheal Ray Richardson and David Thompson. Richardson and Thompson both made the Finals in 1984 for New York, and in fact this is Thompson’s 3rd NBA Finals, as he led Denver there in 1980. This is a battle between a high-octane offense and a strong defense. It should be one hell of a NBA Finals.

(All Box Scores to be added after the end of the season)

Game 1 - #3 Golden State Warriors at #1 Detroit Pistons

Game 1 of the 1987 NBA Finals was a closely contested affair, with the Detroit Pistons managing to edge out the Golden State Warriors. Despite a slow start, the Warriors managed to claw their way back into contention, entering the fourth quarter trailing by just three points. However, Detroit's formidable defense held strong, preventing the Warriors from mounting a successful comeback.

The Pistons were led by Tom Chambers, who put up an impressive 28 points. Michael Cooper also delivered an outstanding all-around performance with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals.

With Game 1 in the books, the series now heads into Game 2, where the Warriors will be aiming to bounce back and steal a game on Detroit's home court.

Game 2 - #3 Golden State Warriors at #1 Detroit Pistons (Pistons lead 1-0)

Game 2 of the 1987 NBA Finals between the Detroit Pistons and the Golden State Warriors was another nail-biter, but yet again the Pistons were able to prevail in a tight contest. Pistons' star Tom Chambers was sensational, dropping a whopping 40 points, while point guard Micheal Ray Richardson orchestrated the offense masterfully, dishing out 14 assists.

For the Warriors, Andrew Toney stepped up, tallying 31 points to keep the game competitive. Despite his heroics, the Warriors were unable to overcome the combined effort of the Pistons, which was bolstered by excellent all-around performances from Michael Cooper and Dennis Johnson.

Golden State will undoubtedly feel a sense of disappointment as they failed to secure a victory despite being competitive in both games on the road. Now down 2-0 in the series, the Warriors look forward to hosting the next three games, providing them with the opportunity to stage a comeback in the series.

PISTONS 116, Warriors 112 (Pistons lead 2-0)

Game 3 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #3 Golden State Warriors (Pistons lead 2-0)

The Warriors, back on their home court, were hoping to use the home advantage to secure a win and bring the series to 2-1. However, Detroit had other plans. The Pistons came out strong, led by Tom Chambers who scored 28 points along with 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Golden State's duo, Kiki Vandeweghe and Andrew Toney, struggled mightily, shooting a combined 16 for 46 from the field. The Pistons' defense proved to be too much for the Warriors to handle, taking Game 3 with a decisive 122-104 victory. This leaves Detroit just one win away from clinching the 1987 Championship.

Pistons 122, WARRIORS 104 (Pistons lead 3-0)

Pistons Stats

Tom Chambers: 28 PTS, 7 REB, 7 AST
Dennis Johnson: 24 PTS, 9 REB, 5 STL

Game 4 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #3 Golden State Warriors (Pistons lead 3-0)

The Pistons proved to be too much for the Warriors to handle once again, clinching the NBA Championship behind four players scoring 20+ points. Micheal Ray Richardson and Skywalker David Thompson scored 29 and 25 points respectively to become NBA Champions. Steve Johnson came off the bench to add 20. Tom Chambers, the Finals MVP, scored 26. The Pistons never trailed and cruised to the NBA Title.

The Warriors tried, but once again Kiki Vandeweghe and Andrew Toney took a lot of shots but struggled from the field (16-50 total). While it was a great season for the Warriors, they were horribly outmatched here. Still, all of the pieces other than Darryl Dawkins are locked in next year. There’s no reason they can’t return to the Finals.

As for our new NBA Champion Pistons, they too have most of their main guys under contract, for multiple years at that. Don’t be surprised to see them repeat.

For prediction purposes, Tom Chambers led the series in scoring with 122 points.

Pistons 130, WARRIORS 117 (Pistons win 4-0)

Pistons Stats

Tom Chambers: 26 PTS, 12 REB
Micheal Ray Richardson: 29 PTS, 7 REB, 10 AST, 3 STL

Warriors Stats

1987 NBA Off-Season

The 1987 Off-Season kicked off with a bang with some huge announcements. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar retired from the New York Knicks. Abdul-Jabbar retires as the NBA’s all-time leading regular season scorer with 31,536 points. He is only one of three players to hit the 30K point mark, with Wilt Chamberlain and the active Dr. J Julius Erving being the others. Abdul-Jabbar also retires a three-time NBA Champion, winning the title for the Bucks in 1971, and of course two championships with the Lakers in 1984 and 1985. Kareem wasn’t the only future Hall-of-Fame big man to call it a career, as Wes Unseld. After a legendary run with Washington Unseld played journeyman for the rest of his career, trying to help the Rockets, Bulls, Knicks and Nets to championships. Bob McAdoo also called it a career. The scoring machine played out the twilight of his career in Denver, falling just short of the 20K point-10K rebound club (missed by 14 rebounds). Jamaal Wilkes and Truck Robinson, solid role players on title contenders, also retired.

The NBA expands once again, introducing the Orlando Magic to the Atlantic Division and Minnesota Timberwolves to the Midwest Division. The salary cap also moves up to $9,000,000, and with some big names looking for new contracts we should see some big ones.

The coaching carousel was out of control in 1987. The biggest question is in Los Angeles, where Pat Riley stepped down from the Lakers’ Head Coach position and was replaced by Providence College’s Rick Pitino, who just led his team to the Final Four. Some in Los Angeles believes major shake-ups will take place in LA as a result. Don Nelson returns to a Head Coaching position as he replaces Jerry Sloan in New York. Sloan will take over for the expansion Orlando Magic. The Anaheim Light let go of Don Cheaney after the dismal eight-win season…but Cheaney was able to get back on his feet as he will oversee the expansion Minnesota Timberwolves. Mike Schuler takes over in Anahiem. John MacLeod was fired from the Stallions, but he’ll replace Phil Johnson in Atlanta. Bull Musselman takes over in Salt Lake. Phil Jackson stepped down after another disappointing run in New Jersey, replaced by Jimmy Rodgers. Lastly, Jim Lynam was fired from Houston, replaced by Rockets veteran Rudy Tomjanovich.

The NBA Draft Lottery was next. There is one man everyone is gunning for, and that’s Navy’s David Robinson. Robinson will be able to complete his Naval requirements in the off-season, making him available right away. His elite talent on both sides of the ball have pundits already saying he’ll be better than Sampson, Hakeem, and Ewing.

NOTE: The Magic won the coinflip against the Timberwolves. Orlando gets the #4 slot, Minnesota the #5 no matter what.

Draft Lotto Order

1 – Light
2 – Bucks
3 – Pacers
4 – Sonics
5 – Knicks
6 – Stallions
7 – Nuggets
8 – 76ers
9 – Rockets
10 – Sonics (From Hawks)

And here is how the Lottery played out:

11 – Rockets (-2)
10 – 76ers (-2)
9 – Nuggets (-2)

7 – Knicks (-2)

It all went in order so far as each team falls two slots due to Orlando and Minnesota.

6 – Light (-5)

4 – Magic (E)

A disastrous result for the Light. Despite an eight-win season they fall completely out of the top five.

3 – Bucks (-1)
2 – Sonics (+2)
1 – Pacers (+2)

A huge lottery victory for the Pacers as their road to rebuilding just took a huge push forward!

Free Agency

Like 1986, it was the post-free agency trades that shook the league. Last year Detroit and Phoenix made big moves after free agency to become contenders (in Detroit’s case, to win the title). Meanwhile, two more $20,000,000+ contracts were signed.

Signings
Ralph Sampson – Mavericks – 7 Years, $22,837,500
Clyde Drexler – Suns – 7 Years, $22,837,500
Dale Ellis – Spirits – 7 Years, $19,880,000
Bernard King – Lakers – 4 Years, $14,490,000
Alton Lister – Trail Blazers – 6 Years, $13,461,525
Byron Scott – Bulls – 5 Years, $11,500,000

Doc Rivers – Lakers – 5 Years, $10,282,500
Thurl Bailey – Bucks – 5 Years, $9,000,000
Darrell Walker – Trail Blazers – 4 Years, $6,370,000
Derek Harper – Heat - 4 Years, $6,066,225
Adrian Dantley – Bullets – 3 Years, $6,000,000
Alex English – Bullets – 3 Years, $6,000,000
Darryl Dawkins – Warriors – 3 Years, $5,175,000

Johnny Moore – Kings – 3 Years, $5,062,000

TRADE

Lakers
trade Magic Johnson to Jazz for Jeff Malone, Olden Polynice, 1988, 1989 and 1990 1st Round Picks

Lakers
trade Bernard King, Johnny Rogers to Trail Blazers for Otis Thorpe, Oscar Schmidt, 1988, 1989 and 1990 1st Round Picks

The Lakers have completely rebooted. It was already thought that Bernard King was looking to play elsewhere. The new Rick Pitino era in LA will now be run by Doc Rivers. Even though New Orleans and Portland look to be winners over the next few years, this is still a lot of draft capital. Magic Johnson will join Charles Barkley in New Orleans as suddenly the Central Division has become even stronger. Portland now becomes a strong contender as well, pairing Bernard King with Chris Mullin.

TRADE

Nets
trade Sidney Moncrief to Heat for Sam Perkins, Derek Harper, Clark Kellogg, 1990 1st Round Pick

Miami
trades one of Michael Jordan’s college teammates in Sam Perkins to pair him with another elite guard in “The Squid”. With Calvin Natt signing with Seattle it’s clear that the Nets are now headed in the opposite direction.

TRADE

Mavericks
trade Ralph Sampson to Sonics for Brad Daugherty, Derrick McKey, Dell Curry, 1989 1st Round Pick, 1990 1st Round Pick

The Mavericks decide to try to gain depth as they trade one of the greatest center prospects ever in Sampson. Sampson though, while great, perhaps has slightly disappointed. Dallas gets a great haul for him, as Brad Daugherty was excellent in his rookie year. Seattle suddenly becomes Sampson’s team, with Calvin Natt coming in from free agency and #2 pick Kevin Johnson should also contribute right away.
