1984 NBA Off-Season

There aren’t major structural changes to the NBA this season. The last super big salary cap change to $6,000,000 takes place this off-season. From this point the cap will only increase between 10-16% each season. Team wise, the Bullets suddenly moved back to Baltimore. In two seasons the Clippers will move to Anaheim and potentially be renamed to the Light. Three off-seasons from now in 1988 the Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves will enter the league.

We had some notable retirements. James Silas, George Gervin’s wingman in San Antonio, retired. Other NBA Champions such as 1976 NBA Finals MVP Jo Jo White, then-teammate Charlie Scott and Washington’s Bob Dandridge also called it a career.

Billy Cunningham stepped down from the Philadelphia 76ers, being replaced by Matt Guokas, who served as an assistant for Cunningham for one year, takes over. Scotty Robertson was fired from the Clippers, Don Chaney, who retired in 1982, spent a year as Robertson’s assistant last season, takes over. Del Harris returns to coaching after his championship run in Houston and takes over the Kings from Cotton Fitzsimmons. Doug Moe stepped down from the head coach position with the Spurs, with Johnny Bach taking over. Bach was an assistant for Golden State. Mike Schuler was fired from Detroit as Detroit pried Lenny Wilkens from the Supersonics. Hubie Brown replaces Wilkens in Seattle.

The NBA Draft Lottery was next. This year’s draft can go a lot of ways. Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon seem like the best two players in the draft, but Sam Bowie, Charles Barkley, Alvin Robertson and Sam Perkins all may become franchise cornerstones. Even prospects projected to be taken later, guys like Kevin Willis, Otis Thorpe, Oscar Schmidt, Lancaster Gordon and John Stockton are all prospects to be excited about.

Draft Lotto
1. Heat (From Nuggets)
2. Jazz
3. Bullets
4. Heat
5. Kings
6. Spirits
7. Knicks (From Hawks)
8. Suns (from Bucks)
9. Trail Blazers
10. Rockets

And here is how the Lottery played out:

#10 – Rockets
#9 – Trail Blazers
#8 – Suns (From Bucks)
#7 – Knicks (From Hawks)
#6 – Spirits
#5 – Bullets (-2)

Massive news for the Kings and Heat as they both have top 5 spots locked in. This is especially exciting for the Heat as they already had best odds with the Nuggets selection, so at worst they have two top four picks.

#4 – Jazz (-2)
#3 – Heat (From Nuggets) (-2)

Either Miami or Sacramento.

#2 – Heat (+2)

The Sacramento Kings lock in the #1 selection!

#1 – Kings (+4)

Draft Order
1. Kings, +4
2. Heat, +2
3. Heat (From Nuggets), -2
4. Jazz, -2
5. Bullets, -2
6. Spirits, Alvin Robertson
7. Knicks (From Hawks)
8. Suns (from Bucks)
9. Trail Blazers
10. Rockets
11. Clippers
12. Suns
13. Spurs

18. Trail Blazers (from Supersonics)
19. Cavs
20. Mavericks
21. Kings (from Pacers)
22. Bulls

24. Warriors (from Celtics), Eddie Lee Wilkins
25. Trail Blazers (from Nets, via Rockets), Oscar Schmidt
26. Lakers, Terence Stansbury

#1 – Kings – Hakeem Olajuwon
#2 – Heat – Michael Jordan
#3 – Heat – Sam Perkins

The Kings go with the sure-fire center in Hakeem Olajuwon. The Heat, who finally caught a break in the lottery, select Michael Jordan, who’s been described as the evolutionary cross of Dr. J and David Thompson. Miami selects Jordan’s college teammate Sam Perkins at #3.

#4 – Jazz – Charles Barkley
#5 – Bullets – Sam Bowie
#6 – Spirits – Alvin Robertson
#7 – Knicks – Tony Campbell

The Knicks take the first surprise, as Campbell was projected to go a bit lower. This is likely to try to make up for David Thompson’s injury.

#8 – Suns – Kevin Willis
#9 – Trail Blazers – Otis Thorpe
#10 – Rockets - TRADE

The Trail Blazers make a surprising move, hitting the reset button again. Houston sends Portland the #10 and the #25, for Kelly Tripucka and the #35. Tripucka has shown to be a great scorer with some defensive concerns. Houston adds his scoring to a talent, but somewhat flawed lineup in the post Moses era. Portland now has a total of four 1st round picks in this draft: #9, #10, #18 and #25.

#10 – Trail Blazers – Michael Cage
#11 – Clippers – Mel Turpin
#12 – Suns – Tim McCormick
#13 – Spurs – Ron Anderson
#14 – Stallions – Jay Humphries
#15 – 76ers – Lancaster Gordon
#16 – Warriors – John Stockton
#17 – Rockets - Vern Fleming
#18 – Trail Blazers – Bernard Thompson
#19 – Cavaliers – Jeff Turner
#20 – Mavericks – Jerome Kersey
#21 – Kings – Jim Peterson
#22 – Bulls – Leon Wood
#23 – Nuggets – Stuart Gray
#24 – Warriors – Eddie Lee Wilkins
#25 – Trail Blazers – Oscar Schmidt

Portland takes a chance with Brazilian star Oscar Schmidt.

#26 – Lakers – Terence Stanbsury

Free Agency

Some eye-popping contracts were given out in 1984 with the big salary jump. Moses Malone locked up $16 Million over six years. He’ll be making $3.4 million for the 89-90 season. Houston and Cleveland signed who they hope to be their franchise cornerstones for the remainder of the 80s in Darrell Griffith and Kevin McHale, respectively. Each inked seven-year deals worth $15.2 Million. Some major players switched uniforms. Michael Cooper spurned Indiana for division rival Detroit for $11.8 Million, Joe Barry Carroll moved on from San Diego to become the face of the Nuggets for $11.8 Million. Kiki Vandeweghe, unhappy with a loss of touches in Dallas, also signed with Golden State for $11.8 Million. Here is a list of notable contracts signed this off-season, with players who switched teams in italics.

Moses Malone re-signs with the Nets for 6 Years, $16,000,000
Darrell Griffth re-signs with the Rockets for 7 Years, $15,200,000
Kevin McHale re-signs with the Cavaliers for 7 Years, $15,200,000
Joe Barry Carroll signs with the Nuggets for 6 Years, $11,800,000
Michael Cooper signs with the Pistons for 6 Years, $11,800,000
Kiki Vandeweghe signs with the Warriors for 6 Years, $11,800,000

Andrew Toney re-signs with the Nuggets for 4 Years, $6,000,000
John Drew signs with the Nuggets for 4 Years, $4,800,000
Tree Rollins signs with the Stallions for 4 Years, $4,800,000
Johnny Davis signs with the Bullets for 3 Years, $3,600,000
Norm Nixon signs with the Supersonics for 3 Years, $2,000,000
John Lucas signs with the Bullets for 3 Years, $1,500,000
Bobby Jones signs with the Spurs for 2 Years, $1,000,000
Campy Russell signs with the Pacers for 1 Year, $400,000

1984-1985 Season Preview

1984-1985 Team Information

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

Baltimore Bullets

1984 Record: 20-62 (6th in Atlantic)
Head Coach: Mike Fratello (2nd Year)
Key Players: Johnny Davis (17.3 PPG, 6.1 APG, 1.3 SPG), Eddie Johnson (19.9 PPG, 5.9 RPG), John Lucas (17 PPG, 7.4 APG, 2.2 SPG), World B. Free (17.3 PPG, 3.9 RPG), Sam Bowie (#5 Overall Pick)

The Bullets add Sam Bowie from the draft, and signed away both Johnny Davis and John Lucas from Sacramento. There are a lot of different pieces that if they come together well, the Bullets may find a playoff spot in their return to Baltimore.

Boston Celtics
1984 Record: 61-21 (2nd in Atlantic, Lost to Bulls in Semi-Finals)
Head Coach: K.C. Jones (4th Year)
Key Players: Larry Bird (29.9 PPG, 10 RPG, 8.2 APG, 2.1 SPG, 50.1% FG, 91.8% FT, 37.9% 3P), Purvis Short (14.4 PPG, 4.9 RPG), Gus Williams (20.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 6 APG, 1.9 SPG)

It took a huge performance from Dominique Wilkins and the Bulls to end the Celtics NBA Finals streak. The Celtics have re-tooled a bit. The addition of rebounder Larry Smith should help the toughness in the middle, but they did lose defensive big Juwann Oldham.

Miami Heat
1984 Record: 22-60 (5th in Atlantic, Missed Playoffs)
Head Coach: Chuck Daly (5th Year)
Key Players: Derek Harper: (13.6 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 4.5 APG), Michael Jordan (#2 Overall Pick), Sam Perkins (# Overall Pick), Clark Kellogg (14.9 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 47.9% FG)

Miami finally did well in the lottery, picking up a couple of Tar Heels in Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins. Jordan is the real gem, and we’ll see how he does sharing the backcourt with Derek Harper.

New Jersey Nets
1984 Record: 63-19 (1st in Atlantic, lost to Knicks in Semi-Finals)
Head Coach: Phil Jackson (3rd Year)
Key Players: Moses Malone (22.8 PPG, 12.8 RPG, 1 SPG, 1.5 BPG, 52.4% FG), Cliff Robinson (15.7 PPG, 7.4 RPG), Calvin Natt (18.2 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 51.9% FG), Sidney Moncrief (22.8 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 2.5 SPG, 53.1% FG, 82.5% FT)

All of the off-season movies the Nets made in 1983 paid off for the most part. The Nets outright took the #1 seed, but fell to the Knicks in the Semis. With that being said, Moses Malone has signed the biggest contract in NBA history. For the next three years, Moses, Cliff Robinson, Calvin Natt and Sidney Moncrief are all locked up. That is the Nets title window.

New York Knicks
1984 Record: 59-23 (3rd in Atlantic, Lost in Finals to Lakers)
Head Coach: Jerry Sloan (3rd Year)
Key Players: David Thompson (29.3 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 3 APG, 52.7% FG, Out for 150+ Days with Torn ACL), Micheal Ray Richardson (17.4 PPG, 8 RPG, 11.6 APG, 2.2 SPG), Tony Campbell (#7 Overall Pick), Mark Eaton (4.4 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 3.9 BPG)

The defending Eastern Conference Champions have major questions as Skywalker is still out another 153 days. He would be back around playoff time. The Knicks have attempted to replace Thompson’s scoring with rookie Tony Campbell. The Knicks also lost half of their wall as Tree Rollins went to Salt Lake…but Mark Eaton still clogs up the center. The defense should still be okay, but the Knicks will only go as far as Micheal Ray can take them.

Philadelphia 76ers
1984 Record: 43-39 (4th in Atlantic, Lost to Nets in Round 1)
Head Coach: Matt Guokas (1st Year)
Key Players: Robert Parish (20.7 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 1 SPG, 2.5 BPG, 50.8% FG), Julius Erving (18.9 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.4 SPG), Maurice Cheeks (15.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 9 APG, 2.6 SPG), Lancaster Gordon (#15 Overall Pick)

The window of contention is likely over in Philly. While a lot of the pieces remain, both Robert Parish and Julius Erving are now on the wrong side of 30 and in Erving’s case there’s a clear decline. The loss of Bobby Jones will also be tough for them to make up. Perhaps they have another playoff run in them, but they clearly lag behind New Jersey and Boston…and probably New York. They don’t own their draft pick, so they might as well try as opposed to tank for Ewing.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Atlanta Hawks

1984 Record: 30-52 (6th in Central)
Head Coach: Phil Johnson (2nd Year)
Key Players: Bill Laimbeer (15.1 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 1.4 BPG), Eddie Johnson (13.3 PPG, 4.9 APG)

The Hawks will look to find some wins this season. Atlanta found some interesting free agents in big men Kurt Rambis and Dave Corzine.

Chicago Bulls
1984 Record: 56-26 (1st in Central, Lost in Conference Finals to Knicks)
Head Coach: Paul Westhead (3rd Year)
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (25.7 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 54.3% FG), Terry Cummings (17.1 PPG, 7.4 RPG), Alvan Adams (13.5 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 50.9% FG), Vinnie Johnson (15.2 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.5 SPG), Johnny Moore (10.2 PPG, 9.7 APG, 2.2 SPG)

1984 was a major season for the Bulls as they won the Central and ended the Eastern Conference reign of the Celtics. Chicago has brought back all their main pieces…we’ll see if ‘Nique can deliver a championship.

Cleveland Cavaliers
1984 Record: 53-29 (3rd in Central, Lost to Celtics in Round 1)
Head Coach: Stan Albeck (6th Year)
Key Players: Kevin McHale (24.7 PPG, 10 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 2.1 BPG, 54.7% FG, 82% FT), Rolando Blackman (20.5 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 50.5% FG, 88.2% FT, 37.7% 3P), Jim Paxson (13.7 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 4.7 APG, 2.1 SPG)

Cleveland also made major strides last season. They led the Central most of the season, but ended up falling just short of the division crown. They gave the Celtics a run in Round 1 in a tough series. Kevin McHale and Rolando Blackman represent one of the best duos in the league, and they could absolutely take home an East crown if not a NBA Title.

Detroit Pistons
1984 Record: 44-38 (4th in Central, Lost to Bulls in Round 1)
Head Coach: Lenny Wilkens (1st Year)
Key Players: Tom Chambers (22.2 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 52.3% FG), Dennis Johnson (16.7 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 1.8 SPG), Michael Cooper (12.9 PPG, 6 RPG, 5.2 APG, 2.7 SPG, 39.3% 3P, DPOTY), Danny Schayes (11.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 1.3 BPG), Fat Lever (12.5 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 7.4 APG)

The Pistons made the most major moves in the 1984 off-season. First, they hired Lenny Wilkens from Seattle to be Head Coach, then acquired Defensive Player of the Year Michael Cooper from division rival Indiana. The Central division will be quite competitive, that’s for sure.

Indiana Pacers
1984 Record: 56-26 (2ns in Central, Lost to Knicks in Round 1)
Head Coach: Don Nelson (4th Year)
Key Players: Alex English (31.8 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 3.9 APG, 1 SPG, 1.4 BPG, 49.5% FG, 82.7% FT), Otis Birdsong (24 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 3.7 APG, 2.7 SPG), Billy Knight (15 PPG, 7 RPG, 1.2 SPG), James Edwards (12 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 1.5 BPG), Campy Russell (12.3 PPG, 4.8 RPG)

The Pacers had a great regular season, only Chicago won a tiebreaker to take the Central Division crown. Indiana ended up losing a tough five game series to the Knicks in Round 1 as a result. Indiana lost a crucial piece, Defensive Player of the Year Michael Cooper, to Detroit. To replace him is championship veteran Campy Russell and Toby Knight, who stepped up in the NBA Finals last year for the Knicks. Still, with Alex English and Otis Birdsong, the Pacers should still be in the mix.

Milwaukee Bucks
1984 Record: 34-48 (5th in Central)
Head Coach: Bill Musselman (5th Year)
Key Players: Marques Johnson (22.7 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.2 SPG), Walter Davis (16.8 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 4.8 APG), Robert Reid (14.2 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.6 SPG)

Predictably, the Bucks fell off after losing Sidney Moncrief to free agency in 1983. Milwaukee needs to find a way to win this season, their 1st round pick is owned by the Suns from the Walter Davis trade.

New Orleans Jazz
1984 Record: 18-64 (7th in Central)
Head Coach: Dick Motta (2nd Year)
Key Players: Jeff Malone (15 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 2.1 SPG), Charles Barkley (#4 Overall Pick), Ron Brewer (15.7 PPG, 1.3 SPG), Ben Poquette (8.8 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 2.6 BPG)

The expansion life continues for the Jazz. Charles Barkley should be a keeper.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Dallas Mavericks

1984 Record: 55-27 (1st in Midwest, Lost to Lakers in Conference Finals)
Head Coach: Frank Layden (5th Year)
Key Players: Isiah Thomas (20.2 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 9.7 APG, 1.6 SPG, 54.4% FG, 37.1% 3P), James Worthy (24.2 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 1.5 SPG, 1.1 BPG, 54.3% FG), Ralph Sampson (17.9 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 57% FG, 41.9% 3P)

The Mavericks finally cashed in on some of that potential, getting to the Conference Finals in just their 4th season. They weren’t able to get by the Lakers, but with Sampson, Worthy and Isiah all 23-24 years old, the future is sparkling bright. Kiki Vandeweghe has moved on, but that may help the defense.

Denver Nuggets
1984 Record: 15-67 (6th in Midwest)
Head Coach: Jack McKinney (3rd Year)
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (24 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 1.3 BPG), Andrew Toney (21.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 4.4 APG), Sleepy Floyd (16.6 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 4 APG, 1.4 SPG), Junior Bridgeman (17.2 PPG, 6.3 RPG), John Drew (18.9 PPG, 5 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 48.6% FG)

Denver has a lot of interesting pieces, but it is unclear how they’ll work together. Still, this should be an improvement from their 15 win season. Denver has put a lot of stock in Joe Barry Carroll, who’s coming off a big season for the Clippers.

Houston Rockets
1984 Record: 36-46 (4th in Midwest)
Head Coach: Jim Lynam (2nd Year)
Key Players: Keppy Tripucka (24.4 PPG, 5 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1 SPG, 49% FG), Darrell Griffith (25 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3.5 APG), Ricky Pierce (15.8 PPG, 4.3 RPG), LaSalle Thompson (8.1 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 1.4 BPG), Steve Stipanovich (10 PPG, 7.3 RPG), Jay Vincent (14.3 PPG, 6.4 RPG)

Another Midwest team with a lot of pieces and questions with how they’ll work together. The Rockets should have no problem scoring this season, they traded for Kelly Tripucka and Darrell Griffth scored a career high 25 PPG last season. Houston locked up Griffith for 7 years, and we’ll see if they sign Tripucka for the same.

Salt Lake Stallions
1984 Record: 42-40 (2nd in Midwest, Lost in Round 1 to Warriors)
Head Coach: John MacLeod (3rd Year)
Key Players: Reggie Theus (21.6 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 6 APG, 1.7 SPG, 50.6% FG, 84% FT), Adrian Dantley (26.4 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 2.8 APG, 1 SPG, 54.5% FG), Dan Roundfield (16.5 PPG, 8.8 RPG), Tree Rollins (7.7 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 2.5 BPG)

The Stallions fell in Round 1 again. They’re bringing back the same core, but this time they’ve added Tree Rollins to fix the interior defense, which has plagued them.

San Antonio Spurs
1984 Record: 41-41 (2nd In Midwest, Lost to Lakers in Semi-Finals)
Head Coach: Johnny Bach (1st Year)
Key Players: George Gervin (29.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 53.5% FG), Brad Davis (16.2 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 7.1 APG), Bobby Jones (12.8 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 1.2 BPG)

We’ll see what the Spurs have left as a contender. Ice still has five years under contract, but he’s still been playing at an elite level.

Spirits of St. Louis
1984 Record: 28-54 (5th in Midwest)
Head Coach: Donnie Walsh (2nd Year)
Key Players: Dale Ellis (23.9 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 47.6% FG, 39.3% 3P, ROTY), Alvin Robertson (#6 Overall Pick), Phil Ford (12.5 PPG, 5.6 APG)

Building continues in St. Louis. Rookie of the Year Dale Ellis now has a playmaking teammate in Alvin Robertson.

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Golden State Warriors

1984 Record: 44-38 (3rd in the Pacific, Lost to Lakers in Semi-Finals)
Head Coach: George Karl (2nd Year)
Key Players: Kiki Vandeweghe (16.5 PPG, 5 RPG, 3.3 APG, 47.4% FG, 87.3% FT, 38.5% 3P), Darryl Dawkins (20.4 PPG, 10.7 RPG, 1.5 BPG, 53% FG), Al Wood (14.1 PPG, 4.2 RPG), Orlando Woolridge (12.9 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 61.2% FG), John Stockton (#16 Overall Pick)

Golden State improved under Coach Karl last season, making the Semi-Finals of the playoffs. Adding Kiki Vandeweghe may give them the scoring punch to get to the next level.

Los Angeles Lakers
1984 Record: 68-14 (1st in Pacific, Won NBA Finals)
Head Coach: Pat Riley (4th)
Key Players: Magic Johnson (22.7 PPG, 10 RPG, 12.3 APG, 1.5 SPG, 55.5% FG, 81.3% FT), Bernard King (24.9 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3.4 APG, 57.3% FG), Buck Williams (14.3 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1 BPG, 61.8% FG), Jamaal Wilkes (15 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.3 SPG)

Everything went right for the Lakers last season as the franchise returned to the top of the NBA. There’s little reason to think they won’t again this year, but there are some rumblings in regards to the expiring contracts of Buck Williams and Jamaal Wilkes.

Phoenix Suns
1984 Record: 37-45 (4th in Pacific, Lost to Mavericks in Round 1)
Head Coach: Larry Brown (3rd Year)
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (16.7 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 48% FG), Craig Hodges (14.5 PPG, 1.2 SPG), Paul Pressey (15.8 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 4.5 APG, 1.7 SPG, 48.6% FG), Kevin Willis (#8 Overall Pick), Greg Ballard (17.4 PPG, 6.9 RPG), Tim McCormick (#12 Overall Pick)

Clyde Drexler had a solid rookie season and looks to be the face of the Suns for the future. We will see what rookie Kevin Willis can add to see if the Suns can return to their days of being a contender.

Portland Trail Blazers
1984 Record: 34-48 (6th in Pacific)
Head Coach: Dr. Jack Ramsay (9th Year)
Key Players: Byron Scott (13.6 PPG, 1.2 SPG), Otis Thorpe (#9 Overall Pick), Michael Cage (#10 Overall Pick), Bernard Thompson (#18 Overall Pick), Oscar Schmidt (#25 Overall Pick)

Portland surprised everyone by trading away scorer Tripucka. Portland is starting four rookies this season in Thorpe, Cage, Thompson and Oscar Schmidt…and now clearly have the youngest team in basketball.

Sacramento Kings
1984 Record: 22-60 (7th in Pacific)
Head Coach: Del Harris (1st Year)
Key Players: Hakeem Olajuwon (1st Overall Pick)

We’re in the Hakeem era in Sacramento. With both Johnny Davis and John Lucas signing with Baltimore, the Kings are at a literal rock bottom…but they have one hell of a rock to climb on.

San Diego Clippers
1984 Record: 36-46 (5th in Pacific, Lost to Lakers in Round 1)
Head Coach: Don Chaney (1st Year)
Key Players: Jawann Oldham (8.5 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 2.9 BPG), Doc Rivers (14.5 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 6.8 APG, 1.2 SPG), Larry Nance (17.3 PPG, 9 RPG, 1 SPG, 1.9 BPG, 50.4% FG), Mike Glenn (14.6 PPG)

With Joe Barry Carroll gone, the Clippers will need to find another way to break though, likely relying on Larry Nance. The Clippers are headed to Anaheim in a couple of seasons.

Seattle Supersonics
1984 Record: 49-33 (2nd in Pacific, Lost to Spurs in Round 1)
Head Coach: Hubie Brown (1st Year)
Key Players: Jack Sikma (19.2 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 1.1 BPG), Maurice Lucas (14.9 PPG, 9.5 RPG), Mark Aguirre (18.6 PPG, 5 RPG, 3.2 APG, 49% FG), Norm Nixon (12.5 PPG, 6.5 APG)

After a breakdown in the playoffs that led to a Round 1 loss, Lenny Wilkens has moved onto Detroit, and Hubie Brown takes over. Seattle has upgraded the point guard position again with Norm Nixon. It remains to be seen if they finally break through.

The Celtics have dominated at home so far, winning 12 of 13 games. Larry Bird has been exceptional of course, but his efficiency is down. Purvis Short has taken his game to another level, and that has made all the difference so far this season.

New Jersey Nets (5)
1984-1985 Record: 17-9
Key Players: Sidney Moncrief (22.8 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 3.2 APG, 2.5 SPG, 53.1% FG), Cliff Robinson (21.2 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 1.5 SPG, 50.5% FG), Calvin Natt (17.2 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 1.2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Some trouble in New Jersey: Moses Malone broke a bone in his leg and will miss about two more months after only playing 12 games so far. Moses also hasn’t looked good at all, only averaging a 12-10 in year one of a massive six-year deal. The rest of the Nets, led by Sidney Moncrief, have played very well and the Nets are still a winning basketball team. But again, the Moses situation is very concerning.

Miami Heat (6)
1984-1985 Record: 16-10
Key Players: Michael Jordan (28.5 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 6.5 APG, 1.9 SPG, 64.6% FG, 80.1% FT), Derek Harper (13.6 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 4.5 APG), Sam Perkins (13.7 PPG, 7.3 RPG
Big Moves: None

It’s Michael Jordan time in Miami. After a somewhat slow start Jordan went on an absolute tear. In his last five games he’s only scored less than 37 points once. He gets to the rim with scary ease, attributing to his insane FG% so far. Basketball is finally fun in Miami.

New York Knicks (8)
1984-1985 Record: 15-12
Key Players: Micheal Ray Richardson: (24.4 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 11.7 APG, 2.7 SPG), Mark Eaton (8.3 RPG, 5.2 BPG), Tony Campbell (12.4 PPG), Antoine Carr (15.9 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 56% FG), Gerald Henderson (16.8 PPG)
Big Moves: None

Micheal Ray Richardson is looking to become the third player behind Oscar and Magic to average a triple double in a season as he carries this Knicks team without David Thompson. Skywalker should be back in late March…in time for the playoffs.

Baltimore Bullets
1984-1985 Record: 9-18
Key Players: Johnny Davis (16.7 PPG, 5.9 APG), Eddie Johnson (19.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG), Sam Bowie (10 PPG, 7.7 RPG)
Big Moves: None

It’s not a lot, but at least there’s some progress being made from last season’s disaster. Sam Bowie has been an effective rookie so far as Johnny Davis and Eddie Johnson take care of the scoring load.

Philadelphia 76ers
1984-1985 Record: 7-23
Head Coach: Matt Guokas (1st Year)
Key Players: Robert Parish (17.2 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 2.2 BPG), Julius Erving (14.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.5 SPG), Maurice Cheeks (15.5 PPG, 6.1 APG)

It’s over in Philadelphia. Time to start over.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Cleveland Cavaliers (1)

1984-1985 Record: 21-7
Key Players: Kevin McHale (25.7 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 2.6 BPG, 60.8%), Rolando Blackman (25 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 50.5% FG, 88.2% FT, 37.7% 3P), Jim Paxson (15 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 4.0 APG, 2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Cleveland again has the top spot in the Central through Christmas with a lot of really good teams chasing them. Rolando Blackman has taken his game to the next level and Kevin McHale has been excellent so far.

Detroit Pistons (3)
1984-1985 Record: 20-7
Key Players: Tom Chambers (28.1 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 48.6% FG), Danny Schayes (11.2 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 1 SPG, 1.4 BPG), Dennis Johnson (20.4 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2 SPG), Fat Lever (9.7 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 8.4 APG, 1.6 SPG), Michael Cooper (14.9 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 4.7 APG, 2.5 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Pistons are right behind the Cavaliers though. Tom Chambers is playing like a 1st Team Forward so far this season, even dropping a 45-10 on division rival Chicago. The defensive wings of Dennis Johnson and Michael Cooper are giving opposing teams tons of trouble and Fat Lever has become a jack-of-all trades type playmaker. A lot to be happy about in Detroit so far.

Chicago Bulls (4)
1984-1985 Record: 21-9
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (36.9 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 1.7 SPG, 51.4% FG, 82.5% FT), Alvan Adams (14.4 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 50.6% FG, 83.7% FT), Terry Cummings (16.9 PPG, 7.2 RPG), Vinnie Johnson (14.9 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 4.4 APG, 1.6 SPG), Johnny Moore (11.8 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 8.9 APG, 2.3 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Dominique is on a warpath this season. The Bulls overall have played strong basketball, but it’s worth noting that a massive ‘Nique game doesn’t mean a win…he dropped 64 against and 48 the next night in New York…and the Bulls lost both games. That’s something they’ll need to figure out.

Atlanta Hawks (7)
1984-1985 Record: 15-11
Key Players: Bill Laimbeer (17.2 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 1.5 BPG), Kurt Rambis (14.2 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 1.2 BPG, 51.7% FG)
Big Moves: None

A bit of a surprise this season. The Hawks boast the second best defense in all of basketball behind the tough front court of Bill Laimbeer and Kurt Rambis. They struggle to score points some nights, but as long as they keep winning those 95-90 battles they could find themselves with a solid playoff seeding.

Milwaukee Bucks
1984-1985 Record: 13-15
Key Players: Marques Johnson (22.7 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 1.3 SPG), Walter Davis (14.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 4.6 APG), Robert Reid (13.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 1.4 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Bucks are hanging in there with .500 ball. They are likely better off trading assets though, this is Reid’s contract year.

Indiana Pacers
1984-1985 Record: 12-14
Key Players: Alex English (28.7 PPG, 9 RPG, 4.3 APG), Otis Birdson (22.2 PPG, 7 RPG, 4.2 APG, 2.2 SPG), James Edwards (14 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 1.3 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The loss of Michael Cooper has hurt the Pacer defense. Tony Knight has been a decent piece, but not one to replace Cooper. Alex English and Otis Birdsong are still doing their strong scoring, but getting through the beast of a division that is the Central will be a tough task this without more support.

New Orleans Jazz
1984-1985 Record: 6-22
Key Players: Jeff Malone (17.1 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 3.5 APG), Charles Barkley (15.3 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.4 SPG), Ron Brewer (14.1 PPG)
Big Moves: None

The Jazz continue to build experience. Jeff Malone and Charles Barkley both look like solid building blocks.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Dallas Mavericks (2)

1984-1985 Record: 21-7
Key Players: Isiah Thomas (44.6 MPG, 26.6 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 12.4 APG, 2.7 SPG), James Worthy (20.1 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.1 BPG, 51.7% FG), Ralph Sampson (20 PPG, 8 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 51.4% FG
Big Moves: None

Good news for the Mavericks: the Midwest Division is kinda awful, as no other team has a .500 record or above. Isiah is playing out of his mind so far this season.

San Antonio Spurs (5)
1984-1985 Record: 13-14
Key Players: George Gervin (21.1 PPG, 5.2 RPG), Brad Davis (17.5 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 7.5 APG)
Big Moves: None

The best thing to say about the Spurs is that despite a sub-.500 record they are decently seeded. Ice is starting to melt though as he’s shooting the lowest FG% of his career, a mere 42.6%.

Houston Rockets (8)
1984-1985 Record: 11-16
Key Players: Kelly Tripucka (26 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 5.2 APG, 1.2 SPG), LaSalle Thompson (7.8 PPG, 10.8 RPG, 1.2 BPG), Darrell Griffth (17.6 PPG, 1.5 SPG), Ricky Pierce (21.3 PPG, 52.2% FG)
Big Moves: None

Unsurprisingly, everyone’s scoring on the Rockets. Currently 6th in offense and 19th in defense, the Rockets may be better than their record (they have a positive differential), but it’s going to be hard to win games consistently if opposing teams have someone getting hot and going off every night. Still, the West is wide open playoff wise so it may work out for the Rockets.

Denver Nuggets
1984-1985 Record: 10-17
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (17.7 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 1 BPG), Andrew Toney (18.2 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 4.8 APG), John Drew (16.7 PPG, 6.3 RPG)
Big Moves: None

There are some things to be excited about in Denver. They have seven players scoring in double digits and have already won two-thirds the amount of games they won all of last year. Defense is horrendous as Joe Barry Carroll hasn’t developed much as a rim protector.

Salt Lake Stallions
1984-1985 Record: 9-17
Key Players: Reggie Theus (17.7 PPG, 4.2 APG), Adrian Dantley (26.5 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 55.2% FG), Kelvin Ransey (15 PPG, 4.9 APG, 1.4 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Stallions deserve a little bit of a break as both Reggie Theus and Adrian Dantley are on the injured list and will be for another couple of weeks. Each have only played 19 of 26 games, and the Stallions have only won 2 of their last 7 as a result.

Spirits of St. Louis
1984-1985 Record: 7-21
Key Players: Dale Ellis (25.2 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 48% FG, 40.4% 3P), Alvin Robertson (17.1 PPG, 6 RPG, 5.6 APG, 2.1 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The record may not show it, but Dale Ellis and Alvin Robertson are putting on an entertaining show in St. Louis and are great pieces. We’ve also seen a little bit from the Japanese giant Yasutaka Okayama, who’s putting up a 7-7 with 2 blocks!

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Los Angeles Lakers (1)

1984-1985 Record: 24-3
Key Players: Magic Johnson (21.6 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 14 APG, 2 SPG, 54.5% FG, 87.5% FT), Bernard King (33.6 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3.4 APG, 63.3% FG), Buck Williams (17.2 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 61.7% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Lakers insane offense is putting up 128.6 points a night and outscoring teams by 23 a game. Magic is on pace to break the APG record so far, with Buck Williams and Bernard King benefitting the whole way. It’s a real question of “who can beat these guys?”

San Diego Clippers (3)
1984-1985 Record: 17-11
Key Players: Jawann Oldham (11.3 PPG, 10 RPG, 1.6 BPG), Doc Rivers (16.1 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 8.3 APG, 1.3 SPG), Larry Nance (16.6 PPG, 8 RPG, 49.6% FG), Mike Glenn (13.6 PPG)
Big Moves: None

Another solid Clippers start defensively led by Oldham and Nance. With the weak West, they may be a show-in for a decent seed as the clock ticks on San Diego.

Phoenix Suns (4)
1984-1985 Record: 15-13
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (23.1 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 3.9 APG, 1.8 SPG, 50.6% FG), Craig Hodges (14.3 PPG, 39.7% 3P), Paul Pressey (15.4 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 5.3 APG, 52.4% FG, 42.4% 3P), Kevin Willis (12.5 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 53.3% FG)
Big Moves: None

This well balanced team has a solid leader as Clyde Drexler looks like a star. The Suns are flawed yes, but in the West that puts you above everyone else.

Golden State Warriors (6)
1984-1985 Record: 13-17
Key Players: Kiki Vandeweghe (16.6 PPG, 4.4 RPG), Darryl Dawkins (16 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.6 BPG, 54.1% FG), Al Wood (14.9 PPG, 5 RPG, 53.4% FG)
Big Moves: None

There’s some disappointment as the Warriors haven’t built on last season’s playoff run. Kiki Vandeweghe hasn’t returned to his high scoring form, and now the Warriors will be missing Darryl Dawkins for a month.

Seattle Supersonics (7)
1984-1985 Record: 12-17
Key Players: Jack Sikma (19.6 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 3.3 APG), Mark Aguirre (17.7 PPG, 5 RPG, 50.8% FG)
Big Moves: None

For whatever reason it’s not fully coming together in Seattle. Norm Nixon has been fine, but Maurice Lucas is losing steam fast. Even though it seems like they just rebuilt, it may be time for Seattle to try again, especially if Mark Aguirre elects to play elsewhere.

Sacramento Kings
1984-1985 Record: 8-16
Key Players: Hakeem Olajuwon (21.9 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 1.7 SPG, 3.3 BPG, 53.5% FG), Sedale Threatt (14.5 PPG)
Big Moves: None

Welcome to Sacramento, this is Hakeem territory. All the Kings have to do now is build around him.

Portland Trail Blazers
1984-1985 Record: 6-23
Key Players: Byron Scott (14 G, 18.6 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 4.4 APG), Michael Cage (12.3 PPG, 8.4 RPG), Oscar Schmidt (15 PPG, 4.2 RPG), Otis Thorpe (12.7 PPG, 8.2 RPG)
Big Moves: None

I mean, how else was starting four rookies going to go? In fairness, Byron Scott has only played 14 games as well. Regardless, Portland is in incredible shape with three first round picks this off-season, including one from terrible Philadelphia.

11/30 – CAVALIERS 134, Bulls 107 – ‘Nique scores 53, but Rolando Blackman’s 41 with help more than takes down Chicago

12/2 – HEAT 113, Nets 95 – Cliff Robinson’s 40 is offset by Jordan’s 42-6-6-3-2 as the Heat are playing winning basketball

12/5 – CELTICS 124, Bulls 118 – In a rematch of last season’s Semi-Finals, ‘Nique goes insane with 64 points and hits 29 free throws on the way…but again Chicago loses. Bird had a 34-11-13

12/16 – KINGS 127, Lakers 126 (OT) – Hakeem goes off for a 30-14 with 8 blocks, spoiling a bit of a throwback Kareem performance (19 PTS, 8/13 FG)

12/19 – LAKERS 172, Bullets 128 – In a game where the Lakers took 128 shots, they piled on the points, scoring 59 in a quarter and finishing with 172. Magic had a 22-18-18

Through ASW (84-85 Season)

1984-1985 Team Information

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

Boston Celtics (1)

1984-1985 Record: 37-15 (20-9, 17-6)
Key Players: Larry Bird (27.6 PPG, 11.2 RPG, 8.4 APG, 2 SPG), Purvis Short (24.2 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 49.7% FG), Gus Williams (17.9 PPG, 5.9 APG)
Big Moves: None

Larry Bird has his eyes out for a third straight MVP as Boston has stormed to the #1 seed. Purvis Short has evolved into one of the better two-guards in the league and was rewarded with an All-Star berth.

New Jersey Nets (4)
1984-1985 Record: 30-17 (17-9, 13-8)
Key Players: Sidney Moncrief (23.3 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 3.8 APG, 2.6 SPG, 51.4% FG, 81.2% FT), Calvin Natt (17.8 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 1.1 SPG), Cliff Robinson (20.1 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 1.3 SPG, 1.2 BPG, 49% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Nets continue to play well without Moses Malone. Moses rejoins the team in February, and we’ll see what he contributes.

New York Knicks (5)
1984-1985 Record: 30-18 (15-12, 15-6)
Key Players: Micheal Ray Richardson: (26.3 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 11.9 APG, 3.1 SPG, 47.9% FG), Mark Eaton (8.8 RPG, 5 BPG), Tony Campbell (13.8 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 48% FG), Gerald Henderson (18.1 PPG, 3.8 APG, 1.8 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Micheal Ray Richardson busted out a MVP-level month, leading the Knicks to a strong 15-6 record since Christmas. Like their cross-river rival, the Knicks await the return of a star player to see if he can contribute to a title chase. David Thompson returns in late-March.

Miami Heat (7)
1984-1985 Record: 27-22 (16-10, 11-12)
Key Players: Michael Jordan (29.1 PPG, 7 RPG, 6 APG, 2 SPG, 57% FG), Derek Harper (12.5 PPG, 4 RPG, 4.7 APG), Sam Perkins (13.2 PPG, 7.3 RPG, Clark Kellogg (14.1 PPG, 6.6 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Michael Jordan came down to earth a little bit. He’s still arguably the most exciting player in the league just 49 game into his career. He’ll be one of two rookies starting the All-Star Game. The Heat still look good to make their first playoff berth in franchise history.

Baltimore Bullets
1984-1985 Record: 16-32 (9-18, 7-14)
Key Players: Johnny Davis (16.9 PPG, 6.3 APG), Eddie Johnson (19.2 PPG, 5.6 RPG), Sam Bowie (10.9 PPG, 7.4 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Baltimore still has made some progress from last season, but they certainly have their eye on the draft.

Philadelphia 76ers
1984-1985 Record: 9-41 (7-23, 2-18)
Head Coach: Matt Guokas (1st Year)
Key Players: Robert Parish (15.8 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 1.9 BPG), Julius Erving (16.2 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 1.4 SPG), Maurice Cheeks (14.9 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 6.3 APG)

Robert Parish and Mo Cheeks are likely the top two trade assets in the league at the moment.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Detroit Pistons (2)

1984-1985 Record: 34-14 (20-7, 14-7)
Key Players: Tom Chambers (29.3 PPG, 7.9 RPG. 50.5% FG), Michael Cooper (14.6 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 4.5 APG, 2.4 SPG), Danny Schayes (10.3 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 1.2 BPG), Dennis Johnson (20.1 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 4.3 APG, 2.3 SPG), Fat Lever (11.5 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 8.5 APG, 1.8 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Detroit had a solid stretch since Christmas to has pushed them to the top of the Central Division. Tom Chambers has been incredible, and the defensive duo of Dennis Johnson and Michael Cooper have locked down the league, leading to the 2nd best defense in basketball right behind the Nets.

Chicago Bulls (3)
1984-1985 Record: 34-17 (21-9, 13-8)
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (34 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.7 SPG, 51.6% FG), Alvan Adams (13.5 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 50.9% FG), Terry Cummings (16.6 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 48.2% FG), Vinnie Johnson (14.6 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.7 SPG), Johnny Moore (11.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 8.8 APG, 2.1 SPG)
Big Moves: None

‘Nique slowed down a little bit, but the Bulls still kept themselves near the top of the East. Still, they’ll need to play better than ever if they want to take the Central from Detroit (and Cleveland is sneaking up on them).

Cleveland Cavaliers (6)

1984-1985 Record: 30-20 (21-7, 9-13)
Key Players: Kevin McHale (26.1 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 2.4 BPG, 58.2% FG), Rolando Blackman (23 PPG, 5.6 RPG), Jim Paxson (15 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.9 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Not a great stretch for Cleveland. Great as Kevin McHale and Rolando Blackman have been, it’s starting to look like the Cavs may need one more piece to get over the time.

Atlanta Hawks (8)
1984-1985 Record: 25-22 (15-11, 10-11)
Key Players: Mark Aguirre (18.8 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 51.7% FG), Bill Laimbeer (16.3 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.6 BPG), Kurt Rambis (14.4 PPG, 10 RPG, 1.4 SPG, 1.3 BPG)
Big Moves: Traded away 1986 and 1987 1st Round Picks for Mark Aguirre

The Hawks made a big move to help them in the Central in obtaining Mark Aguirre, but it hasn’t paid off yet. One would assume that for the price they paid to get Aguirre, that he’ll get the 7 year max in the off-season.

Milwaukee Bucks
1984-1985 Record: 24-24 (13-15, 11-9)
Key Players: Marques Johnson (21.3 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 1.2 SPG), Walter Davis (16.3 PPG, 5 RPG, 4.4 APG, 2.2 SPG), Robert Reid (13.5 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 1.5 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Bucks are right there shooting for the 8th seed, and they need to decide whether to make a move to try to move up, or go the other direction and gain some assets for Marques Johnson and Walter Davis.

Indiana Pacers
1984-1985 Record: 23-24 (12-14, 11-10)
Key Players: Alex English (27.2 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 4.4 APG, 1.1 SPG, 48.1% FG, 82.9% FT), Otis Birdsong (20.8 PPG, 7 RPG, 4.8 APG, 2 SPG), James Edwards (13.9 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 1.4 BPG)
Big Moves: Traded 1986 1st Round Pick for Terry Furlow and James Bailey from Seattle.

Indiana added some strong pieces from Seattle to bolster the roster and make a run, but like Atlanta the improvement hasn’t come out yet. The race for the last couple of playoff seeds should be interesting.

New Orleans Jazz
1984-1985 Record: 12-37 (6-22, 6-15)
Key Players: Jeff Malone (15.8 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 3.1 APG), Charles Barkley (14.9 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 1.4 SPG), Ron Brewer (14.7 PPG)
Big Moves: None

The Jazz continue to build experience. Jeff Malone and Charles Barkley both look like solid building blocks.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Dallas Mavericks (2)

1984-1985 Record: 33-15 (21-7, 12-8)
Key Players: Isiah Thomas (25.9 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 11.7 APG, 2.5 SPG, 49.5% FG), James Worthy (20.6 PPG, 7 RPG, 1.2 BPG, 50.6% FG), Ralph Sampson (21.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 1.5 BPG, 52.4% FG)
Big Moves: Traded 1985 1st Round Pick to Seattle for Maurice Lucas and Louis Orr

Dallas still has a firm grasp on the Midwest division. They stand 6.5 games behind the Lakers for the #1 seed. They made a trade for veterans Lucas and Orr that should only strengthen the team.

Houston Rockets (5)
1984-1985 Record: 26-22 (11-16, 15-6)
Key Players: Kelly Tripucka (27.3 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 4.6 APG, 1.2 SPG, 48.8% FG), Ricky Pierce (21.5 PPG, 4 RPG), Jack Sikma (18.3 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 3.7 APG), Darrell Griffth (17.6 PPG, 3.6 APG, 3.5 RPG, 1.4 SPG
Big Moves: Traded 1985 and 1986 1st Round Picks and Steve Stipanovich for Jack Sikma and Norm Nixon

The Rockets made perhaps the biggest move of the off-season, trading for Jack Sikma during Seattle’s yard sale. Interestingly, Norm Nixon slid into the starting point guard role, moving Darrell Griffith to the 6th man role…and it’s worked out great for Houston. The Rockets are now the 2nd best team offensively.

Salt Lake Stallions (7)
1984-1985 Record: 22-28 (9-17, 13-11)
Key Players: Reggie Theus (18.6 PPG, 5.4 APG), Adrian Dantley (28.4 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 1.1 SPG)
Big Moves: None

With Reggie Theus and Adrian Dantley recovering from their ailments, the Stallions went back to their slightly above .500 ball. This is another contender for a team to make a trade to move up in the West.

San Antonio Spurs
1984-1985 Record: 20-29 (13-14, 7-15)
Key Players: George Gervin (19 PPG, 5.3 RPG), Brad Davis (17.9 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 7.2 APG)
Big Moves: None

Not a strong stretch for the Spurs. Time is against them as of all their players playing big minutes, only Brad Davis is under 30 years old, and he’s 29.

Spirits of St. Louis
1984-1985 Record: 18-33 (7-21, 11-12)
Key Players: Dale Ellis (24.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 48.3% FG), Alvin Robertson (16.8 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 5.8 APG, 1.9 SPG), Phil Ford (16.1 PPG, 6.2 APG)
Big Moves: None

Not a bad stretch for St. Louis. A playoff spot is possible as the West isn’t too strong.

Denver Nuggets
1984-1985 Record: 17-32 (10-17, 7-15)
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (17.5 PPG, 9.6 RPG), John Drew (16.4 PPG, 6.7 RPG)
Big Moves: Traded away Andrew Toney for 1986 1st Round Pick

Denver traded away Andrew Toney to Golden State for a pick. The Nuggets have already surpassed last year’s win total, but are still a bit in no man’s land.

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Los Angeles Lakers (1)

1984-1985 Record: 41-10 (24-3, 17-7)
Key Players: Magic Johnson (21.4 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 14 APG, 1.8 SPG, 54.6% FG, 85% FT), Bernard King (33.4 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 3.4 APG, 1.1 SPG, 61.7% FG), Buck Williams (17.4 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.5 BPG, 59.2% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Lakers continue to cruise on top of the West. The biggest questions are can Dallas take them down, can they win a 2nd straight title, and can they re-sign Buck Williams and Jamaal Wilkes?

Phoenix Suns (3)
1984-1985 Record: 33-19 (15-13, 18-6)
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (24.8 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.9 SPG, 50.7% FG), Craig Hodges (15.2 PPG, 41.1% 3P), Paul Pressey (14.1 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 5.5 APG), Kevin Willis (11.8 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 52.6% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Suns played great, with Clyde Drexler blossoming into a star. The Suns are still a full tier below Dallas and LA, but they’re on the right track.

San Diego Clippers (4)
1984-1985 Record: 29-20 (17-11, 12-9)
Key Players: Jawann Oldham (11.4 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 1.8 BPG), Doc Rivers (16.4 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 8.1 APG, 1.4 SPG), Larry Nance (16.7 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 2.3 BPG, 49.6% FG), Mike Glenn (13.6 PPG)
Big Moves: None

The Clippers continue to play well and are among the top 4 in the Western Conference. A pleasant surprise and one that makes one wonder about the effectiveness Joe Barry Carroll.

Golden State Warriors (6)
1984-1985 Record: 24-27 (13-17, 11-10)
Key Players: Kiki Vandeweghe (16.6 PPG, 4.4 RPG), Darryl Dawkins (16 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.6 BPG, 54.1% FG), Al Wood (14.9 PPG, 5 RPG, 53.4% FG)
Big Moves: Traded 1986 1st Round Pick for Andrew Toney

Golden State made a big trade for Andrew Toney and has him in the 6th man role. We’ll see if that can get them higher up in the West standings.

Sacramento Kings (8)
1984-1985 Record: 19-27 (8-16, 11-11)
Key Players: Hakeem Olajuwon (21.5 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 1.8 SPG, 52.9% FG) Sedale Threatt (14.6 PPG)
Big Moves: None

Hakeem singlehandedly has the Kings holding onto a playoff spot, and he was rewarded with a starting spot in his first All-Star Game.

Seattle Supersonics
1984-1985 Record: 15-36 (12-17, 3-19)
Key Players: None

Big Moves: Traded away Maurice Lucas and Louis Orr for Dallas’ 1st Round Pick, Traded away Terry Furlow and James Bailey for Indiana’s 1986 1st Round Pick, Traded away Jack Sikma and Norm Nixon to Houston for Steve Stipanovich, 1985 and 1986 1st Round Picks, Traded away Mark Aguirre for 1986 and 1987 Atlanta Hawks 1st Round Picks

Seattle hit the reset button. There’s not much to say here. While they helped their situation by gaining draft picks over the next three seasons, they don’t have their own this year, which is amazing news for Portland.

Portland Trail Blazers
1984-1985 Record: 12-39 (6-23, 6-16)
Key Players: Byron Scott (14 G, 18.6 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 4.4 APG), Michael Cage (13.2 PPG, 9.6 RPG), Oscar Schmidt (14.8 PPG, 4.8 RPG), Otis Thorpe (15.4 PPG, 8.7 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The best news for Portland was that Seattle pressed the reset button, which only aids Portland’s chances in landing Patrick Ewing.

End of the Season (84-85 Season)

The end of the 1985 season came with some twists and turns. The Los Angeles Lakers continued to roll and took down the Pacific Division. Magic Johnson was awarded his second MVP award, finishing his 2nd straight season with a triple-double average (21.9 PPG, 10 RPG and 14.3 APG). The assists per game value is a NBA record. He beat out Dominique Wilkins, who scored a monstrous 36.7 points per game for the 60-22 Bulls. That 60-22 mark was not enough to win the Central Division though, as Detroit finished their season strongly at 61-21. The New Jersey Nets captured their second Atlantic Division over Boston and New York as once Moses Malone returned, the Nets truly became a force. The Dallas Mavericks were able to capture the Midwest, but it came at a cost…Isiah Thomas tore a ligament. He may be able to return for the NBA Finals…if Dallas can somehow make it there without him.

Rookies Hakeem Olajuwon and Michael Jordan electrified the league. Hakeem’s late season injury likely handed the Rookie of the Year award to Jordan. Hakeem led the Kings with 21.5 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.7 SPG and 3.1 BPG averages. Jordan led the Miami Heat to the playoffs for the first time ever and finished 3rd in scoring with 29.6 PPG.

1984-1985 Team Information

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

New Jersey Nets (2)

1984-1985 Record: 55-27 (17-9, 13-8, 25-10)
Key Players: Moses Malone (46 G, 13.9 PPG, 12.3 RPG, 1.3 BPG), Sidney Moncrief (22.3 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 4.1 APG, 2.7 SPG, 51.5% FG, 82.2% FT), Calvin Natt (17.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG), Cliff Robinson (19.1 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 2.4 APG, 1.1 SPG, 1.3 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The Nets became an absolute force with the return of Moses Malone. The Nets perhaps sport the most dangerous foursome in the league and will have a fun test in the opening round: Michael Jordan’s Heat.

Boston Celtics (4)
1984-1985 Record: 37-15 (20-9, 17-6, 15-12)
Key Players: Larry Bird (28.1 PPG, 11 RPG, 8.1 APG, 1.9 SPG), Purvis Short (23.4 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 49.4% FG), Gus Williams (17.2 PPG, 5.9 APG)
Big Moves: None

The Celtics did not finish strongly, allowing the Nets to blow past them for the Atlantic. The Celtics have a real weakness as they ended up with a losing record on the road, and one slip up could cost them their first round series against the defending Eastern Conference Champion New York Knicks.

New York Knicks (5)
1984-1985 Record: 51-31 (15-12, 15-6, 21-13)
Key Players: David Thompson (21 PPT, 3.9 RPG, 3.1 APG), Micheal Ray Richardson: (24.9 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 12.1 APG, 3.3 SPG), Mark Eaton (9.3 RPG, 5.4 BPG), Tony Campbell (13.8 PPG, 5.7 RP), Gerald Henderson (17,9 PPG, 3.8 APG, 1.8 SPG), Antonie Carr (15 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 52.9% FG)
Big Moves: None

Micheal Ray Richardson joins Magic in averaging a triple-double for a regular season. The Knicks have to be excited, as David Thompson, while seemingly not 100%, looked good in scoring over 20+ PPG in his return, including a 36 pointer. The Knicks also sport the Defensive Player of the Year: Mark Eaton. The only bad news? If they want to return to the NBA Finals, they gotta get through Bird and Boston in Round 1. No easy feat.

Miami Heat (7)
1984-1985 Record: 45-37 (16-10, 11-12, 18-15)
Key Players: Michael Jordan (29.6 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 5.9 APG, 2.1 SPG, 54% FG), Derek Harper (12.3 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 5 APG), Sam Perkins (13.3 PPG, 7.5 RPG), Clark Kellogg (14.2 PPG, 6.8 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Michael Jordan has brought excitement to Miami basketball. Is he enough to get by the powerful New Jersey Nets? Probably not, but I would absolutely not count out the Rookie of the Year.

Baltimore Bullets
1984-1985 Record: 27-55 (9-18, 7-14, 11-23)
Key Players: Johnny Davis (16.4 PPG, 6.0 APG, 1.5 SPG), Eddie Johnson (19.7 PPG, 6.1 RPG), Sam Bowie (9.8 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.9 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The Bullets have some reason to be excited, they own their draft pick. Winning the lotto could lead to Patrick Ewing, but someone in the top 5 should get the Bullets back to winning basketball.

Philadelphia 76ers
1984-1985 Record: 16-66 (7-23, 2-18, 7-25)
Key Players: Robert Parish (16.5 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 2 BPG), Julius Erving (16.6 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.5 SPG), Maurice Cheeks (14.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 6.7 APG)

There are tons of question marks in regards to the Sixers for next season. With no draft picks and Parish, Dr. J and Cheeks all locked up for years, one has to imagine a trade has to happen to get Philly back on track…or a big FA signing. It’s somewhat incredible to see this championship trio have such a rough season.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Detroit Pistons (1)

1984-1985 Record: 61-21 (20-7, 14-7, 27-7)
Key Players: Tom Chambers (29.0 PPG, 7.6 RPG. 51.9% FG), Michael Cooper (14.4 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 4.4 APG, 2.4 SPG), Danny Schayes (10.3 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 1.2 BPG), Dennis Johnson (19.5 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 4.2 APG, 2.3 SPG), Fat Lever (11.8 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 8.8 APG, 1.8 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Head Coach Lenny Wilkens has the Pistons playing excellent basketball. The reunion with Dennis Johnson has done wonders for his career. Tom Chambers and Fat Lever also made strides in their game. Detroit locked up the 2nd best record in basketball and were able to hold off division rival Chicago for the Central. They’ll take on another division rival, Indiana, although Indiana isn’t 100%.

Chicago Bulls (3)
1984-1985 Record: 60-22 (21-9, 13-8, 26-5)
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (36.7 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 1.8 SPG, 51.6% FG), Alvan Adams (12.9 PPG, 7.4 RPG), Terry Cummings (17.1 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 49.7% FG), Vinnie Johnson (13.9 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.7 SPG), Johnny Moore (11.3 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 9.2 APG, 2.3 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Wilt, Elgin and Dominique. Wilkins put up the third highest scoring average in NBA history: 36.7 PPG. He wasn’t awarded MVP and got somewhat unlucky by having Detroit put together a fantastic season, but the ‘Nique led Bulls are a scary team. ‘Nique broke the 60 point barrier twice this season, a 63 pointer and a 64 pointer. Still, their playoff match-up won’t be easy as they have to contend with Kevin McHale and the Cavaliers.

Cleveland Cavaliers (6)
1984-1985 Record: 51-31 (21-7, 9-13, 21-11)
Key Players: Kevin McHale (25.9 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 2.7 BPG, 56.7% FG), Rolando Blackman (23.3 PPG, 5.5 RPG), Jim Paxson (14.3 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 3.6 APG, 2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Cavs are a threat regardless of their lack of depth. Kevin McHale again showed he is one of the best two-way players (if not the best) in the game, and Rolando Blackman can score with anyone. No matter how this playoffs go, they’ll need to upgrade the big man spot beside McHale…rookie Jeff Turner hasn’t delivered.

Indiana Pacers (8)
1984-1985 Record: 41-41 (12-14, 11-10, 18-17)
Key Players: Alex English (25.8 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 4.3 APG, 1.1 SPG), Otis Birdsong (20.9 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 4.7 APG, 2 SPG), James Edwards (13.0 PPG, 9 RPG, 1.4 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The Pacers got just enough of a push to get by Atlanta and lock in a playoff berth. Still, the addition of James Bailey and Terry Furlow hasn’t been smooth, and they have quite the hill to climb against Detroit. Worse yet, Otis Birdsong got hurt late in the season and may miss the series.

Atlanta Hawks
1984-1985 Record: 39-43 (15-11, 10-11, 14-21)
Key Players: Mark Aguirre (18.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 3 APG), Bill Laimbeer (15.9 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 1.6 BPG), Kurt Rambis (13 PPG, 9.9 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Surprisingly, Mark Aguirre wasn’t able to push the Hawks to higher heights. Instead, Atlanta fell a bit and missed the playoffs entirely. They have to re-sign Aguirre though, or they would have dumped a lot of assets for nothing.

Milwaukee Bucks
1984-1985 Record: 37-45 (13-15, 11-9, 13-21)
Key Players: Marques Johnson (21.3 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.2 SPG), Walter Davis (15.9 PPG, 5 RPG, 4.4 APG, 2.1 SPG), Robert Reid (13.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.7 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Bucks stood pat, but finished poorly and missed out on the playoffs. We’ll see what kind of off-season they’ll have.

New Orleans Jazz
1984-1985 Record: 17-65 (6-22, 6-15, 5-28)
Key Players: Jeff Malone (15.1 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 3.2 APG), Charles Barkley (14.4 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.3 SPG), Ron Brewer (15.4 PPG)
Big Moves: None

If the lotto comes out right, the Jazz might be looking at a playoff berth next season.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Dallas Mavericks (2)

1984-1985 Record: 55-27 (21-7, 12-8, 22-12)
Key Players: Isiah Thomas (53 G, 25.5 PPG, 5 RPG, 11.7 APG, 2.5 SPG, 49.5% FG), James Worthy (22 PPG, 8 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 1.2 BPG), Ralph Sampson (22.2 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 1.7 BPG, 51.4% FG)
Big Moves: None

The good news for Dallas is that they were still a strong basketball team once Isiah went down. The bad news? It’s hard to believe Dallas can get to the Finals without him.

Houston Rockets (3)
1984-1985 Record: 47-35 (11-16, 15-6, 21-15)
Key Players: Kelly Tripucka (25.9 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 4.4 APG, 1.3 SPG, 49.7% FG), Ricky Pierce (19.6 PPG, 3.9 RPG), Jack Sikma (18.1 PPG, 11.9 RPG, 3.8 APG, 1.4 BPG), Darrell Griffth (18.1 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 3.3 APG, 1.6 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Houston has come together nicely thoughout the season, ending on a 38-21 stretch. With the hole in Dallas’ situation at point guard there may be a spot in the Western Conference Finals for them…and they’ve got multiple wins in LA this year. Houston has a lot of scoring weapons, on any night Tripucka, Pierce, Sikma or Griffith could go off. They will have to take down another emerging team, the Suns, in Round 1, to get anywhere.

San Antonio Spurs (7)
1984-1985 Record: 39-43 (13-14, 7-15, 19-14)
Key Players: George Gervin (19.8 PPG, 5.6 RPG), Brad Davis (18.1 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 7.2 APG, 1.7 SPG)
Big Moves: None

It’s Spurs-Mavericks III. And the Spurs caught a huge break as Dallas will be without Isiah. There isn’t much to say for the Spurs as the Iceman era is quickly ending, but there’s a path to success here in these playoffs for them.

Spirits of St. Louis (8)
1984-1985 Record: 36-46 (7-21, 11-12, 18-13)
Key Players: Dale Ellis (24.6 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 1.3 SPG), Alvin Robertson (17 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 6.1 APG, 1.9 SPG), Phil Ford (15 PPG, 6.0 APG, 1.3 SPG)
Big Moves: None

St. Louis will see NBA playoff basketball for the first time since the 1968 West Finals. Dale Ellis and Alvin Robertson are one of the most exciting tandems in the league. If they are able to add a real big in the off-season the Spirits may become a solid playoff contender.

Salt Lake Stallions
1984-1985 Record: 34-48 (9-17, 13-11, 12-20)
Key Players: Reggie Theus (19.6 PPG, 4 RPG), Adrian Dantley (44 G, 28.7 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 1.0 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Once Adrian Dantley went down, the Stallions stood little chance of holding onto their playoff spot. A disappointing follow-up to last year’s playoff appearance.

Denver Nuggets
1984-1985 Record: 28-54 (10-17, 7-15, 11-22)
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (19 PPG, 9.4 RPG), John Drew (16.7 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 1.4 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Nuggets still have work to do. Without a draft pick this year, they’ll have work to be better next year.

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Los Angeles Lakers (1)

1984-1985 Record: 64-18 (24-3, 17-7, 23-8)
Key Players: Magic Johnson (21.9 PPG, 10 RPG, 14.3 APG, 1.8 SPG, 53.7% FG, 85.8% FT), Bernard King (32.8 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.2 SPG, 59.9% FG), Buck Williams (17.0 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 59.1% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Lakers put together another 60 win season and are the odds on favorite to win a second straight NBA title. Magic locked up a second MVP. Bernard King’s season may have been overlooked, as his 32.8 PPG didn’t lead the league. But he was dominant.

Golden State Warriors (4)
1984-1985 Record: 47-35 (13-17, 11-10, 23-8)
Key Players: Kiki Vandeweghe (16.6 PPG, 4.3 RPG), Darryl Dawkins (15.8 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 1.8 BPG, 53.4% FG), Al Wood (13 PPG, 4 RPG, 52% FG), Andrew Toney (17.8 PPG, 48.2% FG), Orlando Woolridge (14.2 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 56.1% FG), John Stockton (11.4 PPG, 5.9 APG, 1.6 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Golden State finished the season ridiculously strong. Darryl Dawkins cleaned up the boards, and the various scoring weapons did their job. The Warriors will have home court against the Clippers in a match between two up and coming teams.

San Diego Clippers (5)
1984-1985 Record: 45-37 (17-11, 12-9, 16-17)
Key Players: Jawann Oldham (11.0 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 1.8 BPG), Doc Rivers (15.5 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 7.9 APG, 1.3 SPG), Larry Nance (17.7 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 2.5 BPG, 48.8% FG), Mike Glenn (14 PPG)
Big Moves: None

With the Clippers playing their last seasons in San Diego, they are giving their fans a chance to win some playoff basketball games. The Clippers have overachieved, but they definitely have the talent to take down Golden State.

Phoenix Suns (6)
1984-1985 Record: 45-37 (15-13, 18-6, 12-18)
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (24 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 4 APG, 1.6 SPG, 49% FG), Craig Hodges (15.2 PPG, 40% 3P), Paul Pressey (12.5 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 5.7 APG), Kevin Willis (11.5 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 50.7% FG), Mike Woodson (14.5 PPG, 4.1 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The Suns stumbled into the playoffs, but still put together a nine-game improvement from last season. Clyde Drexler had a great season, we’ll see if they can overcome the scoring punch of the Rockets. Mike Woodson was awarded 6th Man of the Year.

Portland Trail Blazers
1984-1985 Record: 28-54 (6-23, 6-16, 14-16)
Key Players: Byron Scott (37 G, 19.5 PPG, 4 RPG, 4.3 APG, 1.3 SPG), Michael Cage (12.4 PPG, 9.5 RPG), Oscar Schmidt (14.5 PPG, 4.6 RPG), Otis Thorpe (16.1 PPG, 8.2 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Portland looked like a real team with Byron Scott out there. The Trail Blazers own three top 10 picks, including top and 3rd odds for the lotto. There’s a lot to be excited about.

Sacramento Kings
1984-1985 Record: 26-56 (8-16, 11-11, 7-29)
Key Players: Hakeem Olajuwon (53 G, 21.5 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.7 SPG, 3.1 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The Kings fell apart completely without Hakeem Olajuwon. Still, armed with an ultra-talented center, a top 5 pick and cap space, the Kings are gearing up to be a force in the late 80s.

Seattle Supersonics
1984-1985 Record: 20-62 (12-17, 3-19, 5-26)
Key Players: None
Big Moves: None

I mean we all knew Seattle’s path once they made their moves.

4/13 – Bulls 126, CELTICS 117 – ‘Nique dealt out one more ass-kicking to Bird and Boston with another 57 points. Bird had a 30-9-9-5

2/21 – SPIRITS 122, Lakers 114
4/11 – Lakers 137, SPIRITS 132

Series Preview
NBA playoff basketball returns to St. Louis. In just their second season, the Spirits were able to make the playoffs behind Dale Ellis and rookie Alvin Robertson. Ellis had an excellent second season, scoring 24.6 PPG, while Robertson has shown to be a strong all-around player, averaging a 17-6-6 with 2 steals a game. The Spirits have some other interesting pieces. The aging Artis Gilmore and the 7’7” monster Yasutaka Okayama are a decent center combination, while point guard Phil Ford has held down the fort. Of course, the defending NBA Champion Lakers are led by the MVP, Magic Johnson. Magic completed his second straight season averaging a triple-double leading the Lakers to 124 points a game, nine more than any other team. Most of those assists went to Bernard King, who was unstoppable scoring 32.8 PPG. The Spirits have shown they can score points in St. Louis, but the Lakers score whenever they want and it’s going to be hard for St. Louis to keep up.

Series Preview

Two up and coming teams built in different ways. The Clippers surprised everyone, making the playoffs after allowing Joe Barry Carroll to leave in free agency. Doc Rivers, Larry Nance and Trent Tucker provided a solid foundation while Jawann Oldham and Mike Glenn, two players who played in the NBA Finals last year, provided extra stability. The young Clippers will have their hands full as the Warriors made some moves to help him. Kiki Vandeweghe and Andrew Toney are two scorers that will keep Golden State in any game. Rookie John Stockton has added a level of playmaking that Golden State hasn’t had recently. This is a battle of a top 5 offense against a top 5 defense. Both teams, assuming the Lakers win, will be looking to extract some revenge in the Semis.

Series Preview
The Spurs-Mavericks rivalry continues. The Iceman took a huge step back at age 33, but Gervin and the Spurs may have gotten a break with Isiah Thomas’ injury. Brad Davis played well all season to help the Spurs make it back to the playoffs, and the addition of Bobby Jones did solidify the defense. Even though the Mavericks are without Isiah Thomas, James Worthy and Ralph Sampson still provide a deadly 1-2 punch, and rookie Jerome Kersey snagged himself a Rookie of the Month award. The Spurs have a fighting chance, but the Mavericks are still the favorite here.

Series Preview
Last season the Suns made a fun run led by Clyde Drexler. This year Drexler took another step to stardom and the Suns finished with a winning record. Rookie Kevin Willis and 6th Man of the Year Mike Woodson aided the Suns as well. The Rockets have rebuilt on the fly. Houston sports a top-5 offense with players full of playoff experience. Jack Sikma, Kelly Tripucka, Ricky Pierce and Darrell Griffith have shown they can go off for 40 any night. Still, the defense is a bit suspect, and it could be a big breakout series for Drexler and Phoenix. As a bonus, the winner of this series plays an injured Dallas or a struggling San Antonio.

Series Preview
The newly powered Pistons face-off against division rival Indiana in Round 1. There’s a lot for Indiana to overcome. First, Michael Cooper, a Pacer last year, now plays for Detroit. He and Dennis Johnson are perhaps the best defensive duo in basketball, which means Alex English will have his hands full trying to score. Indiana will need him to score as Otis Birdsong will miss part or all of the series with a sprained knee. English will have to go basket-for-basket with Tom Chambers, who had a break out year and seemingly can’t be defended. It unfortunately looks like the Pacers are on their way down from a successful few seasons in the Central, while Detroit looks primed to be on, or near the top. This series may serve as the official turning point. The Pistons were just a flat out powerhouse all season, ranking 2nd in offense and 1st in defense. Indiana did not crack the top 10 in either.

Series Preview

These two Atlantic Division rivals collide again. Last season Chicago knocked out Boston before they faced New York, and some had thought that the Knicks’ run was somewhat flukish as a result. The Celtics slowed down in the second half of the season, losing the division to the Nets. Still, Larry Bird and Purvis Short have kept Boston in the mix and they can’t be counted out to return to the NBA Finals. The Knicks are led by Micheal Ray Richardson’s fantastic season resulted in a triple-double average (25-10-12) and Mark Eaton blocked everything that came into the paint. With David Thompson back, Knicks fans are excited about making a return trip to the NBA Finals, but this time they gotta get by Bird. No easy feat.

Series Preview
The real draw for this series: the playoff debut of Rookie of the Year Michael Jordan. Jordan has success against the Nets this season, which showed in the results ended up at a 2-2 tie. The Nets have the a strong defense and two top level defenders to throw at MJ in Sidney Moncrief (Defense 1st Team) and Dudley Bradley (former Defensive Player of the Year). Of course, even if Jordan does go off, the Nets should will win the series. Moses Malone’s return has made the Nets an absolute force that steamrolled to a 2nd straight Atlantic Division title, and Calvin Natt and Cliff Robinson need to be dealt with as well. The Heat will need Clark Kellogg or Derek Harper to step up.

Series Preview
An interesting series to say the least. In most cases, the easy prediction would be Dominique Wilkins, who just capped off one of the greatest scoring seasons in NBA history at 36.7 PPG, rolls over the Cavs in a good series. But the Cavs have owned the Bulls this season, winning the season series 4-1. ‘Nique has had some strong games against the Cavs, but Cleveland beat the Bulls anyway. A lot of that is due to Kevin McHale. He’s had his own big games against Chicago and Rolando Blackman has been that consistent second scoring punch that Terry Cummings isn’t always able to provide for Chicago. McHale is also the elite defensive piece Chicago just doesn’t have (not that they are bad defensively). This should be a great series.

Game 1 - #7 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Dallas Mavericks

The Spurs put up a good fight early on, Ice would end up with 26 points, but the Mavericks, even without Isiah, were too much. Ralph Sampson, James Worthy and mid-season trade piece Louis Orr all scored 25+ points to take Game 1.

MAVERICKS 115, Spurs 97 (Mavericks lead 1-0)

Game 1 - #6 Phoenix Suns at #3 Houston Rockets

Clyde Drexler
and Greg Ballard were unstoppable as the Suns dominated and shocked Houston on the road. While the Rockets had double digit scorers, no one went off to match Drexler’s 29 or even Ballard’s 26. The Suns put up 43 in the third to steal home court.

Suns 123, ROCKETS 99 (Suns lead 1-0)

Game 1 - #8 Indiana Pacers at #1 Detroit Pistons

The Pistons destroyed Indiana in Game 1. The score was 86-47 at half time and that was pretty much that. Tom Chambers was unstoppable, dropping 37 points with 7 rebounds and 7 assists, while Michael Cooper and Dennis Johnson dropped 20 each.

Game 1 - #5 New York Knicks at #4 Boston Celtics

Micheal Ray Richardson
and the Knicks started their playoff title defense with an upset victory in Boston. Micheal Ray was the best player on the court, putting up 30-13-11, outdueling Larry Bird (23-8-11). Former Celtic Gerald Henderson dropped 24 off the bench and Skywalker added 19. The Celtics need to make sure not to drop Game 2, or they’ll be in a lot of trouble right away.

Knicks 107, CELTICS 97 (Knicks lead 1-0)

Knicks Stats
Micheal Ray Richardson: 30 PTS, 13 REB, 11 AST
Gerald Henderson: 24 PTS, 7 AST, 9/12 FG

Game 1 - #7 Miami Heat at #2 New Jersey Nets

In a game where baskets were hard to find, Michael Jordan dropped 29 in his playoff debut to lead the Heat to a win in their first game in franchise history. The Nets couldn’t find a bucket all night, but their defense locked up everyone on Miami…except Jordan. Ailing the Nets was an early injury to Calvin Natt, who will miss the remainder of the series with a sprained ankle. Both teams combined for 54/154 FG and 141 points…MJ had 14 of those field goals and 29 of those points.

Heat 76, NETS 65 (Heat lead 1-0)

Heat Stats
Michael Jordan: 29 PTS, 10 REB, 4 STL

Nets Stats
Moses Malone: 12 PTS, 19 REB

Game 1 - #6 Cleveland Cavaliers at #3 Chicago Bulls

The Cavs just didn’t show up for Game 1. Chicago led 34-14, 67-33 and 107-59 at the quarter ends. Dominique Wilkins was dominant with 33 points. The Cavs need to find another gear in Game 2, as this was an absolute turn around from the regular season between these two.

BULLS 118, Cavaliers 85 (Bulls lead 1-0)

Cavaliers Stats
Jim Paxson: 14 PTS
Kevin McHale: 14 PTS, 6/10 FG

Game 2 - #8 St. Louis Spirits at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 1-0)

Have to give the Spirits some credit, they hung in there through three quarters before the Lakers pulled away. Still, there’s been no stopping the Lakers offense as they dropped 138, powered by Magic’s 20 assists and Bernard King’s 41 points. It should give the Spirits some home to perhaps take one in LA. Dale Ellis had 30.

LAKERS 138, Spirits 116 (Lakers lead 2-0)

Spirits Stats
Dale Ellis: 30 PTS, 5 REB, 2 STL, 4/8 3P
Phil Ford: 16 PTS, 9 AST

Game 2 - #5 San Diego Clippers at #4 Golden State Warriors (Warriors lead 1-0)

It looks like the Warriors match up really well against the Clippers. Golden State again went off early, storming to a 37-16 1st quarter lead and not looking back. The Warriors had 7 players in double digit scoring, with Andrew Toney again leading the way with 19. San Diego needs to figure out something, otherwise they are headed to being embarrassed at home in a clean sweep.

WARRIORS 130, Clippers 97 (Warriors lead 2-0)

Clippers Stats

Game 2 - #6 Phoenix Suns at #3 Houston Rockets (Suns lead 1-0)

Who knew? The Suns blew out the Rockets in Houston for the second time in a row, basically ending the series. Paul Pressey had a triple-double as Greg Ballard dropped 22. Surprisingly, with all their scorers the Rockets aren’t able to get anyone off for a big 30, 35 pointer to take control. Houston now has to win three straight, with the next two in Phoenix, to avoid the upset. A surprising sweep looks more likely.

Suns 114, ROCKETS 99 (Suns lead 2-0)

Game 2 - #8 Indiana Pacers at #1 Detroit Pistons (Pistons lead 1-0)

It was another blowout for Detroit as the Pacers again failed to put significant points on the board. Tom Chambers continued to be unstoppable, scoring 33 with 12 boards as Alex English, James Edwards and James Bailey had no answers for him. Indiana, who a couple seasons ago looked primed for a Finals run, now stares at a sweep that will result in a second straight first round exit.

Game 2 - #5 New York Knicks at #4 Boston Celtics (Knicks lead 1-0)

Larry Bird
and the Celtics took care of business in Game 2, giving them a fighting chance as the series moves to New York. Bird reminded everyone that Boston has more or less dominated the Eastern Conference this past decade with a 46-5-7. Skywalker had 30, a good sign, and Micheal Ray dropped a 28-13-7. Neither was enough, but the Knicks can still win this series without returning to Boston.

CELTICS 120, Knicks 108 (Series tied 1-1)

Knicks Stats
Micheal Ray Richardson: 28 PTS, 13 REB, 7 AST

Game 2 - #7 Miami Heat at #2 New Jersey Nets (Heat lead 1-0)

The Nets squeaked out a Game 2 victory without Calvin Natt. Once again the Nets did a relatively good job on everyone but Michael Jordan (and Bill Garnett, holding Miami to 99 points and managing 105 themselves. They’ll have to play better in Miami or an upset is coming. MJ was ridiculous, flirting with a triple-double (32-8-7-7).

Game 2 - #6 Cleveland Cavaliers at #3 Chicago Bulls (Bulls lead 1-0)

Game 2 in Chicago was a battle of stars. Dominique Wilkins was on route for a legendary game, but Rolando Blackman and Kevin McHale were doing their best to keep up. With just 2:02 left the Cavs held a 111-110 lead, on the brink of stealing home court advantage. ‘Nique had just airballed a three and McHale pushed the pace. Blackman recovered a disastrous Darnell Valentine missed lay-up, and eventually it’s Jim Paxson who hits a jumper to make it a three-point game. It takes just 4 seconds for the Bulls to respond as Johnny Moore finds a streaking ‘Nique for a lay-up. Valentine misses and the Bulls have a shot to take the lead, but Alvan Adams can’t convert. Valentine amazingly loses the ball, giving the Bulls the ball with 24 seconds left, down 113-112.

Paxson thinks he stole a pass to Vinnie Johnson, but he’s called for a foul. Cavs have one to give, but it gives a chance for Chicago to call a half-court play. They can’t get it to ‘Nique, but Terry Cummings takes a shot for a game-winner…but it misses…allowing Vinnie Johnson to tip it in for a 114-113 lead with just ONE second left! Cleveland can’t believe it but they get a timeout.

Blackman finds McHale…who’s quick release fade from the wing GOES IN! The referees agree, that he got it off in time! Chicago Stadium, which had been celebrating, is left in shock as the Cavs run off the court, celebrating their victory! See you in Cleveland!

Game 3 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #8 St. Louis Spirits (Lakers lead 2-0)

Nice try for the Spirits. They did their best to put points on the board early but the Laker offense completely overwhelmed them, taking a 76-52 lead by halftime and taking the excited St. Louis crowd out of it early. Magic had a 23-12-13 and King had 40. Still, a playoff berth in only their second season should bring some excitement to St. Louis, we will see if they can build on that.

Game 3 - #4 Golden State Warriors at #5 San Diego Clippers (Warriors lead 2-0)

In a series most thought would be close, the Warriors finished off the sweep of the Clippers in San Diego. Rookie John Stockton got the better of Doc Rivers, and San Diego just couldn’t get going. Despite a #5 seed and a winning record, this probably does down as another disappointment for the Clippers, as this series, at least on paper, looked quite winnable. The new-look Warriors get a rematch with the Lakers.

The heart of a champion came through as the Spurs fended off the Mavericks in Game 3. Bobby Jones came alive, Ice added 21 and the Spurs ran an early double-digit lead to victory. While the Mavericks got another great game from Louis Orr, the bench wasn’t as strong as the prior two games. Maurice Lucas specifically looks close to done.

Game 3 - #3 Houston Rockets at #6 Phoenix Suns (Suns lead 2-0)

In another series that has surprised pretty much everyone, the Suns finished off the Rockets in Phoenix. While the Rockets got good scoring performances from Kelly Tripucka (28) and Darrell Griffth (24), Clyde Drexler was with them every step of the way to lead his team to victory. Houston looked like the hottest team in basketball coming into the playoffs, and now all they will have are questions about the future. The Suns take on the winner of Dallas-San Antonio.

Game 3 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #8 Indiana Pacers (Pistons lead 2-0)

The East is not as easily defined! Things look lost for the Pacers as the Pistons busted out a 50 point 2nd quarter, but Indiana clamped on the defense end and only allowed 37 points the rest of the way, winning the second half by 20. This allowed Indiana to stay alive for Game 4. Alex English wasn’t efficient, but his 29 points got the job done. While Tom Chambers had another 30+ point game, Detroit somewhat struggled from the field otherwise (DJ: 9/26). If Indiana can nab Game 4, who knows what can happen in a deciding Game 5.

Purvis Short
led the Celtics in regaining home court advantage with 32 points in Madison Square Garden. The Knicks fell behind late in the 1st half and Short and Larry Bird made sure they couldn’t make it back. While Bird was his regular self (26-9-7), Micheal Ray had an off night at the worst time (12-6-9) and while David Thompson was solid, he likely isn’t going to be busting out those 40 pointers until next season. The Knicks now need to defend MSG in Game 4 just to get to a deciding Game 5 in Boston Garden.

Game 3 - #7 Miami Heat at #2 New Jersey Nets (Series tied 1-1)

The Miami Arena crowd was in a frenzy for the first NBA playoff game in the city. The Nets and Heat went back and forth. Michael Jordan was struggling from the field, but still finding ways to score. Moses Malone would score a basket off the glass that put the Nets up 104-100 with 2:48 left in the game…but the Nets would fail to score again. Still, they made it hard on Miami with their stout defense. MJ would drain three of four free throws over the next 48 seconds as he refuses to be denied, leaving New Jersey up 104-103 with 2 minutes to go. The Nets couldn’t buy a basket, but Miami went cold too. With 40 seconds left though, MJ got himself to the line once again, and he would drain both to make it 105-104. Sam Perkins added another free throw late, and Dudley Bradley would miss a game winner to give the Heat a 2-1 lead in the series. While Miami was thrilled, fans around the world wondered if Jordan was getting favorable calls getting to the line late so often.

Nonetheless, the Nets are suddenly in danger of another early playoff exit, this one as embarrassingly the #2 seed.

The Cavaliers took care of business at home, slowing down ‘Nique (36 PTS on 32 FGA) and supporting Kevin McHale in a huge Game 3 victory. McHale was unstoppable on both ends of the court, stuffing the stat sheet with a 31-13-3 with 2 steals and 6 blocks. The Bulls had nothing for him. Rolando Blackman, Jim Paxson and Billy McKinney added a combined 57 points for Cleveland. The Bulls are now in danger of being eliminated early after a very strong regular season.

Game 4 - #2 Dallas Mavericks at #7 San Antonio Spurs (Mavericks lead 2-1)

It wasn’t pretty, but a combination of good defense and missed free throws allowed the Spurs to force Game 5. Only Ralph Sampson seemed to want to win Game 4 for Dallas as he scored 31 of the team’s 88 points. Outside of Sampson, Dallas went 24/65 from the field and 9/18 from the free throw line. It’s not like it looked much better on San Antonio’s end, but they took advantage of Isiah’s absence as Wes Matthews and Brad Davis each dropped 22 points, offsetting a no-show from Ice (6 points). The Mavericks and Spurs rivalry continues to be a good one, and if the Spurs can play great they may pull off the upset back in Dallas.

Game 4 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #8 Indiana Pacers (Pistons lead 2-1)

Not much to say here. The Pacers used up everything they had in Game 3 and after a strong 1st quarter were lifeless against Detroit in Game 4. Tom Chambers continued his fantastic play, Danny Schayes cleaned up the boards, and the Pistons destroyed Indiana. This will be the first playoff series victory for Detroit in almost a decade, and they’re pretty much playing like a #1 seed should. They’ll have a tough test in the Semis regardless, as Boston and New York are strong threats. As for Indiana, it may be crossroads time. Alex English is on the wrong side of 30 and showed some decline this season and Otis Birdsong (who only played this game)’s contract is up.

Game 4 - #7 Miami Heat at #2 New Jersey Nets (Heat lead 2-1)

The Nets never figured out how to guard Michael Jordan, and it’s cost them their playoff run. MJ scored another 32 on only 15 field goal attempts, and Clark Kellogg got hot too with 26, as the Heat finished off the upset. The Nets had NBA title hopes once Moses Malone returned from injury and they stormed to the Atlantic Division title. While the Calvin Natt injury hurt them, they can’t feel that’s an acceptable excuse to lose this series here. Questions will now linger around Moses. While still the best rebounder in the league, he’s lost his elite scoring touch. He failed to score 20 points in a game this series (three times under 15), just turned 30 and his contract goes for another five seasons. Does he still have elite basketball in him? As MJ and the Heat, they’ll take on the winner of the Cleveland-Chicago bloodbath. Regardless, after four years of struggle, basketball is finally exciting in the city of Miami.

HEAT 120, Nets 112 (Heat win 3-1)

Nets Stats
Moses Malone: 18 PTS, 10 REB, 8/9 FG
Cliff Robinson: 27 PTS, 11 REB, 6 AST
Sidney Moncrief: 22 PTS, 7 REB

Clark Kellogg: 26 PTS, 5 REB, 4 AST

Game 4 -
#3 Chicago Bulls at #6 Cleveland Cavaliers (Cavaliers lead 2-1)

What looked like a sure thing at halftime showed to be anything but. The Cavs led 69-54 at the half, looking to finish off Chicago and actually have home court against their second round opponent Miami. But not so fast. Dominique Wilkins went off for a 41-15, and led the Bulls to a 56-30 ass-kicking in the second half, forcing the series to return to Chicago for a deciding Game 5. ‘Nique went from looking frustrated and defeated to rising above in perhaps the most important game of his young career. The Cavs were left shell shocked, and now all the momentum is with Chicago for Game 5.

Bulls 109, CAVALIERS 99 (Series tied 2-2)

Bulls Stats

Jim Paxson: 14 PTS, 3 REB, 4 AST

Game 5 - #7 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Dallas Mavericks (Series tied 2-2)

Good run for the underdog Spurs. San Antonio simply ran out of gas late in Game 5 as Ralph Sampson and James Worthy drained bucket after bucket. The Spurs finished shooting 33% from the field as Dallas survived their first round series without Isiah. They’ll meet the red-hot Suns next. As for the Spurs, they will have significant money committed to Ice for four more seasons as he heads towards his mid-30s. It’s unclear if the Spurs can build a winner around him still, especially as he did show significant decline this year.

MAVERICKS 112, Spurs 88 (Mavericks win 3-2)

Mavericks Stats
Ralph Sampson: 24 PTS, 9 REB, 3 BLK, 11/17 FG
James Worthy: 24 PTS, 9 REB, 3 BLK

Game 5 - #5 New York Knicks at #4 Boston Celtics (Series tied 2-2)

Fans around the world were expecting this one to be a close one, the battle between the last four Eastern Conference Finalists. The Celtics had none of that, pulverizing the Knicks in Boston. The Celtics went out to a 40-11 1st quarter lead and it was never a game after that. Gus Williams found a way to neutralize Micheal Ray Richardson as he, Bird and Purvis Short put on a show out there. The Celtics look to reclaim the East, and to do that they’ll have to go through the #1 seeded Pistons. As for the Knicks, this wasn’t the follow-up they were hoping for after last season’s trip to the Finals, but with a completely healthy David Thompson next year they should be in the mix again.

CELTICS 112, Knicks 83 (Celtics win 3-2)

Knicks Stats
Micheal Ray Richardson: 17 PTS, 5 REB, 4 AST
David Thompson: 17 PTS

Game 5 - #6 Cleveland Cavaliers at #3 Chicago Bulls (Series tied 2-2)

In a battle of superstars, Dominique Wilkins led the Bulls with a 31 point performance while Kevin McHale had perhaps the worst game of his career, scoring just 2 points and grabbing 2 rebounds. That pretty much said it all for the Cavs. The Bulls continued the momentum they built upon in Game 4 as the Cavs came out lifeless. The Bulls outscored the Cavs 170-110 in the last six quarters of the series. It’s hard to hate on McHale, but he was expected to lead the Cavs to new heights, especially as Cleveland took a 2-1 lead. The Bulls will move on to face the Heat in a battle of the two most exciting scorers in the league, ‘Nique and Michael Jordan.

BULLS 114, Cavaliers 80 (Bulls win 3-2)

Cavaliers Stats
Rolando Blackman: 26 PTS, 2 STL, 11/19 FG
Jim Paxson: 18 PTS, 5 REB, 4 AST

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 31 PTS, 4 Reb, 12/17 FG
Terry Cummings; 20 PTS, 8 REB, 9/15 FG
Vinnie Johnson: 16 PTS, 7 REB, 6 AST

Series Preview
This is a rematch from last season’s Western Conference Semi-Finals, where the Lakers defeated Golden State in 5 (although, the Warriors were the only West team in the playoffs to take a game from LA). The difference this year is the Warriors added several new pieces last off-season and throughout the year. Andrew Toney, Kiki Vandeweghe and rookie John Stockton have all played big roles in the Warriors’ success this season. Everything also seems to be coming together for the Warriors down the stretch as well. The Warriors stood at 24-30 on February 17th and went 23-5 since, then swept the Clippers in the 1st round of the playoffs. If they are ever going to make some noise, it’s likely not. With that being said, these are the defending NBA Champion Lakers looking to make their third straight Finals. 2x MVP Magic Johnson is living up to the award, and Bernard King may be the most unstoppable scorer in the West (if not the league, it’s him and Dominique). We’ll see if the Warriors have anything for them.

The red hot Suns against the #2 seed without their star point guard. A battle that would likely be heavily in Dallas’ favor is nothing more than a pick’em at best as a result. Dallas handled Phoenix early in the season with Isiah playing, but since the injury the home team has gotten the best of it. The biggest questions for Dallas are can they contain Clyde Drexler, and can they negate the point guard advantage Paul Pressey has over Foots Walker? Phoenix of course needs to make sure Ralph Sampson and James Worthy don’t completely take over. Should be a heck of a series.

Series Preview
An interesting match-up of two Eastern Conference heavyweights. On one side, the team of the 80s from the Eastern Conference side of things looking to return to the NBA Finals: The Boston Celtics. In the other corner, the revamped #1 seeded two-way Detroit Pistons. There are storylines all over the place in this one. Larry Bird gets to face off with rival Michael Cooper. Detroit Head Coach Lenny Wilkens, Detroit’s Dennis Johnson and Boston’s Gus Williams all celebrated a NBA Championship together in Seattle in 1979. Both Bird and Tom Chambers are former Rookie of the Year Award winners and arguably the face of their respective franchises. In this one, the Celtics need to find a way to score against Detroit’s stout defense, all the while making sure Detroit doesn’t get going themselves. Furthermore, the Celtics are still recovering from a slugfest against the New York Knicks while Detroit made mostly easy work of the Pacers. But a counter is that the Celtics have had no problem with Detroit all year, being the cause of four of their 21 losses. This may end up as the best series in the entire playoffs.

Dominique
vs. Michael. ‘Nique vs. MJ. Perhaps the two most exciting young scorers in basketball will meet in the Semi-Finals. Wilkins led the NBA in scoring with an outstanding 36.9 PPG, but questions all around the league are wondering if MJ will one day beat that record. As for the series, as impressive as the Heat victory over the Nets was, they’ve struggled against Chicago all season. From top to bottom the Bulls are the better basketball team, as Alvan Adams, Terry Cummings, Vinnie Johnson and Johnny Moore all provide excellent support for ‘Nique. On the other hand MJ needs to hope Derek Harper, Clark Kellogg or Sam Perkins step up every night. The Bulls can beat the Heat without a monster ‘Nique night, but everyone needs to be on for Miami for Miami to score some wins. It’s hard to pick against Chicago here, but if NJ has a few 40 pointers in him (he reached that value twice) you never know.

(All Box Scores to be added after the end of the season)

Game 1 - #4 Golden State Warriors at #1 Los Angeles Lakers

Different players, same result. Bernard King went nuts in Game 1 against the Warriors, dropping 47 points, helping the Lakers hide a so-so Magic game and win Game 1. King was completely unstoppable, adding 7 boards, 9 assists, 6 steals and 2 blocks. The Warriors were always in arm’s reach, but they’ll need to do better, especially on the defensive end, if they want to find a win or two.

LAKERS 124, Warriors 109 (Lakers lead 1-0)

Warriors Stats
Darryl Dawkins: 25 PTS, 13 REB, 2 STL, 6 BLK, 12/16 FG
Kik Vandeweghe: 16 PTS, 8 REB, 7 AST
Terry Tyler: 16 PTS, 7 REB

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 47 PTS, 7 REB, 9 AST, 6 STL, 2 BLK, 22/34 FG
Buck Williams: 19 PTS, 6 REB
Magic Johnson: 11 PTS, 7 REB, 6 AST, 3 STL

Game 1 - #6 Phoenix Suns at #2 Dallas Mavericks

Clyde Drexler
got hot and the Suns continued their excellent playoff play, winning Game 1 in Dallas. Drexler played 44 minutes and went for 32, immediately putting Dallas on the defensive this series. Ralph Sampson continued to look like a superstar in the making with a 27-8 and 8 blocks, but James Worthy didn’t provide enough to keep Dallas in the game.

Suns 115, MAVERICKS 107 (Suns lead 1-0)

Suns Stats
Clyde Drexler: 32 PTS, 10/21 FT, 11/12 FT, 4 REB, 6 AST, 1 BLK
Paul Pressey: 16 PTS, 9 REB, 6 AST
Kevin Willis: 12 PTS, 12 REB

Mavericks Stats
Ralph Sampson: 27 PTS, 8 REB, 8 BLK
James Worthy: 21 PTS, 7 REB, 2 BLK
Louis Orr: 17 PTS, 15 REB

Game 1 - #4 Boston Celtics at #1 Detroit Pistons

Detroit clamped on the defense and despite Boston finding 12 more field goal attempts, they’d win by 12. The Pistons continually got to the line, and Tom Chambers continued his unstoppable play with 29 points. Bird was good but inefficient, 28-11-8 but 28 FGA, but he’ll need to be great if Boston is going to get past Detroit and back to the Finals.

PISTONS 105, Celtics 93 (Pistons lead 1-0)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 28 PTS, 11 REB, 8 AST, 2 STL, 1 BLK
Purvis Short: 16 PTS, 4 REB, 5 AST

Pistons Stats
Tom Chambers: 29 PTS, 5 REB, 3 AST
Michael Cooper: 14 PTS, 10 AST
Dennis Johnson: 13 PTS, 9/10 FT

Game 1 - #7 Miami Heat at #3 Chicago Bulls

The greatest duel in NBA history?

Dominique Wilkins was completely unstoppable in Game 1, dropping 55, and yet it wasn’t enough as Rookie of the Year Michael Jordan scored 45 and led Miami to a Game 1 victory in Chicago. Jordan and Wilkins just threw bombs at one another all game, but Jordan’s edge in efficiency allowed the rest of the Heat to outscore Chicago’s cast as a whole. The Bulls need to find a way to slow down Jordan.

Heat 138, BULLS 127 (Heat lead 1-0)

Heat Stats
Michael Jordan: 45 PTS, 5 REB, 7 AST, 2 STL, 3 BLK, 16/24 FG, 13/13 FT
Frank Brickowski: 15 PTS, 7/11 FG
Sam Perkins: 12 PTS, 8 REB, 3 AST

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 55 PTS, 15 REB, 19/38 FG, 17/19 FT
Terry Cummings: 18 PTS, 4 REB, 6/11 FG

Game 2 - #4 Golden State Warriors at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 1-0)

The Warriors tested LA all game, and this one went down to the wire.

Magic Johnson put LA up 102-100 with 3:10 left with a jumper. Kiki loses the ball, but the Lakers can’t continue their momentum as a Bernard shot off the glass just rims out. Kiki hits a jumper at the foul line, tying the game at 102 with 2:12 left. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, still showing he can be effective in important moments, hits the legendary sky hook after King finds him to put LA back up two. Kareem then intercepts a Terry Tyler pass for Darryl Dawkins…but Tyler manages to steal the ball back from him. Al Wood is fouled on the shot and ties it up at 104.

Bernard, who has had a monster game, misses a shot from the free throw line, but Magic dives in and jams in the rebound, sending the Forum into a frenzy! The Warriors deserve some respect though, as they run a play with great ball movement and tie the game at 106 with an Orlando Woolridge jumper with 48 seconds left. Magic and Jamaal Wilkes miss opportunities to take the lead, and Al Wood drives in for a jam to give the Warriors a 108-106 lead! Kiki gets too aggressive and fouls King with 4 seconds left. King gets to the line…but misses BOTH free throws and LA knocks the ball out of bounds. John Stockton gets sent to the line with a second left, makes the first, but purposely misses the second, and the Warriors hold onto the win.

Warriors 109, LAKERS 106 (Series tied 1-1)

Warriors Stats
Kiki Vandeweghe: 17 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST, 3 3PM
Al Wood: 16 PTS, 6 REB, 7/9 FG
Andrew Toney: 17 PTS, 5 REB, 5/8 FG

Game 2 - #6 Phoenix Suns at #2 Dallas Mavericks (Suns lead 1-0)

After a good 1st quarter the Mavericks offense sputtered again, and the Suns powered through with 30+ point 2nd and 3rd quarters to win Game 2 on the road. The Dallas Maverick season started with a lot of promise, but this Isiah injury has hurt. Dallas needs to find a way to win 4/5 games, with three of the games in Phoenix. The big story in Game 2 was rookie Kevin Willis going off with a 20-16-5, dominating Ralph Sampson.

Suns 115, MAVERICKS 101 (Suns lead 2-0)

Suns Stats
Clyde Drexler: 24 PTS, 8 REB, 2 STL
Kevin Willis: 20 PTS, 16 REB, 5 AST, 9/14 FG

Mavericks Stats
James Worthy: 26 PTS, 9 REB, 2 STL

Game 2 - #4 Boston Celtics at #1 Detroit Pistons (Pistons lead 1-0)

It’s rather shocking to see the Celtics like this. Detroit whipped Boston in Game 2, taking a 73-36 halftime lead and winning the game by over 50. The Pistons were unstoppable. Tom Chambers scored 39 as no one stepped up for Boston. Detroit shot 51.1% from the field opposed to Boston’s 35.2%, and made 38 free throws to 16. Boston needs to wake up at home or their quest will end in Round 2 once again.

Game 2 - #7 Miami Heat at #3 Chicago Bulls (Heat lead 1-0)

The greatest duel in NBA history…part 2?

The roles were reversed this time. Micharl Jordan was stupid good, scoring 57, but ‘Nique had 44 and this time it was the Bulls who were able to overcome to tie the series at one. Terry Cummings helped out for Chicago big time with 28 points. It was an absolutely incredible performance to watch from both MJ and ‘Nique. We expect it to continue in Miami.

Game 3 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #4 Golden State Warriors (Series tied 1-1)

Is it time to worry in LA?

With the game tied at 118 with 3:02 left, the Warrior finished on a 5-0 run, leaving LA scoreless, to take Game 2. Orlando Woolridge came up big again, scoring 23, and Darryl Dawkins came up big too with a 19-14. The Lakers got big games from Bernard King and Magic, and even a big of a throwback from Kareem, but the bench wasn’t there and the defense needs to step up to avoid falling into a 3-1 hole.

Game 3 - #2 Dallas Mavericks at #6 Phoenix Suns (Suns lead 2-0)

The Mavericks have no answers here. Clyde Drexler had a big game from the line, 6th Man of the Year Mike Woodson had the game of his career (29-9-5) and the Suns stormed out to a 3-0 series lead. Not only has Ralph Sampson and James Worthy failed to dominate this series, but other than Louis Orr the bench pieces for Dallas have just failed to step up. Phoenix will look to continue their scorching hot playoff run by completing the sweep in Game 4.

Game 3 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #4 Boston Celtics (Pistons lead 2-0)

One thing that wasn’t going to happen: Detroit dominating in Larry Bird’s house. The Celtics got on the scoreboard as Bird put up a 32-9-11. Boston led early and never looked back. Tom Chambers still got his 32 points, but it took him 27 shots to get there, and Detroit wasn’t efficient enough to hang on the road. Still, they have a chance to put Boston in a 3-1 hole in Game 4.

Game 3 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #7 Miami Heat (Series tied 1-1)

Things slowed down a bit, ‘Nique vs. MJ went 34-31 in Nique’s favor…and the Bulls were able to pull away from the Heat in the 4th to regain control of the series. Terry Cummings again came through with a huge game, dropping another 28. This was obviously huge for the Bulls, as with MJ on the other side being down in the series was a serious concern.

Game 4 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #4 Golden State Warriors (Warriors lead 2-1)

What’s old is new again.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, for one night, returned to elite form, hitting shot after shot, sky hook after sky hook, to score 29 points. Magic Johnson found Kareem and Bernard King all night, recording 24 assists. The Lakers scored 85 first-half points…but to Golden State’s credit they did not give up, scoring 42 in the third quarter themselves. They couldn’t quite catch-up, Kiki Vandeweghe tried with his 35, but the Lakers were too much in Game 4 to deal with. We’re now at a best-of-three.

Lakers 140, WARRIORS 130 (Series tied 2-2)

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 24 PTS, 6 REB, 24 AST
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: 29 PTS, 7 REB, 14/19 FG

Game 4 - #2 Dallas Mavericks at #6 Phoenix Suns (Suns lead 3-0)

Well, we’ve established that Isiah Thomas is ridiculously important to the Mavericks offense. The Suns once again shut down Dallas. While Ralph Sampson and James Worthy got their points, no one else stepped up and the Suns finished off Dallas to advance to the Western Conference Finals. Amazingly, the Suns have yet to lose a game this playoffs. They wait for the Lakers-Warriors winner. It’s unclear if there are actual real questions for Dallas. Assumingly Isiah re-signs, of course.

Game 4 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #4 Boston Celtics (Pistons lead 2-1)

We have a series! Boston provided a balanced attack as five players scored at least 17 points and blew out Detroit in Game 4 to tie the series. Detroit got off to a hot start, but Boston rampaged with 47 second quarter points, again hitting the 80 mark at halftime, and Detroit couldn’t make up the difference. Huge Game 5 coming up.

Game 4 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #7 Miami Heat (Bulls lead 2-1)

Another great duel between ‘Nique and MJ. Nique had 38 and MJ had 43, but once again the stellar play of Terry Cummings made the difference as he scored 25 and the Bulls beat Miami in Miami again. It’s clear that Miami will need to find a strong second scorer for MJ to get though the East. But he sure makes it exciting. Bulls can return to the Eastern Conference Finals with a win in Game 5.

Game 5 - #4 Boston Celtics at #1 Detroit Pistons (Series tied 2-2)

Back in Detroit, the Boston momentum didn’t die. This one went down to the wire. Tom Chambers just made one of two free throws, tying the game at 109 with 2:06 left. Detroit clamps on the defense but the Celtics move the ball beautifully, finding Larry Smith for an open lay[up to go back up 111-109. Chambers, playing like the best player on a #1 seed, responds immediately to tie the game again. But again Boston is able to take their time and find a good shot despite the top level defense of Michael Cooper and Dennis Johnson. Cedric Maxwell finds Gus Williams for an open jumper and with 1:16 left it's Boston 113, Detroit 111.

Maxwell gets a steal and hits a jumper to put Detroit in trouble as Boston goes up four. Detroit can’t make a bucket down the stretch (well Fat Lever ends up making a meaningless jumper with no time left), and the Celtics suddenly take the lead in the series. The Pistons, who have dominated the regular season and have yet to be threatened…are suddenly at the brink of elimination as they have to beat Boston in Boston.

Game 5 - #7 Miami Heat at #3 Chicago Bulls (Bulls lead 3-1)

Good effort from the Heat. Michael Jordan had another great game…but the Bulls proved to be way too much for the Heat. ‘Nique had 32 and the Heat never really had a chance in this one. Game 6 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #4 Golden State Warriors (Lakers lead 3-2)

Defense went out the window as the Warriors and Lakers went at one another all game. Rookie John Stockton records his 11th assist of the game finding Kiki Vandeweghe to tie the game at 130 with just 1:40 left. Bernard King, who has struggled late in close games this series, misses a shot off the glass, but Rodney McCray follows up with a thunderous jam! Chocolate Thunder answers the call with his own thunderous dunk on the other end, keeping the game tied at 132. Magic misses a three, but the Warriors can’t take advantage and turn the ball over, leaving 18 seconds left on the clock. With a chance to end the game and the series, Magic finds King…but Bernard misses and we head to overtime!

The Warriors got off to a hot start in overtime, with Stockton finding Dawkins for another jam with 2:49 left and putting Golden State up 140-136. The Lakers, perhaps exhausted, can’t find a basket as send Vandeweghe to the line to give the Warriors a six point lead. The Lakers again try to go to the old tried-and true, and Magic finds Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for a huge basket with 1:29 left. 142-138 Warriors.

Stockton hits one-of-two free throws. Magic finds King for a big jam and a foul…but King misses a late free throw again! Still, 1 minute left, Warrior lead is three. Orlando Woolridge finds his way to the basket for a lay-up to give Golden State a five point lead! Magic scores with 15 seconds left, bring it back to three, but the Lakers can’t get the ball back in the free throw game and Golden State forces Game 7!

Game 6 - #1 Detroit Pistons at #4 Boston Celtics (Celtics lead 3-2)

The dream season for Detroit ends at the hands of Larry Bird. Bird was unstoppable with a 38-12 and 4 threes, and the Pistons could never hang in Boston. Detroit had looked unstoppable every step of the way, and now their season suddenly ends. Tom Chambers again had a big game, but the offense can’t drop outside of Chambers to where even good defense will pull out the win. Fat Lever had a triple-double, but was horrifically 4/23 from the floor. That’s something that’ll need fixing next season. The Celtics head to Chicago for a rematch of last year’s epic seven game Eastern Conference Semi-Final series.

CELTICS 113, Pistons 101 (Celtics win 4-2)

Pistons Stats

Game 7 - #4 Golden State Warriors at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Series tied 3-3)

Offensively, this may have been the greatest playoff game of all-time. The Lakers took a solid lead in the first-half, going up 77-66. Golden State continued to score, but so did LA. 91 points were scored in the 3rd quarter alone, with Golden State winning 46-45. Still, the Warriors refused to give up. The points kept flowing and the Warriors inched closer and closer. A Dawkins dunk made it 145-140 Lakers with just 1:47 to go, and after a free throw from LA the Warriors got within four after a Kiki Vandeweghe jumper. But Golden State could not get closer than four as the Lakers did not fall in the clutch has they have this series. Bernard King finally hit some late free throws and the Lakers ultimately survived the Warriors, winning 151-147. The Warriors have nothing to be ashamed of, although Woolridge’s play probably got him a massive contract from someone that may be questionable to match. But the Warriors showed their moves have positioned them in a good spot in the West. The Lakers continue their title defense and face the red-hot Suns in the Conference Finals.

LAKERS 151, Warriors 147 (Lakers win 4-3)

Series Preview
There are two stories here. One is that the Phoenix Suns have been red hot in these playoffs, sweeping both Houston and Dallas. The other story, the Lakers have been the top team in basketball all season and have manhandled Phoenix all season. The Warriors showed the Lakers can have some defensive issues, and if the Suns can exploit that plus continue their momentum perhaps they’ll have a real chance. Biggest concern for the Suns is the Magic-Paul Pressey match-up. The Suns do have several bigs to throw at Buck Williams as well. The Bernard King-Clyde Drexler match-up should be exciting as well. The Suns will need to either put up big points, or do a better job defensively than they did during the regular season.

Series Preview
A rematch from last season’s Eastern Conference Finals where the Bulls ended the Celtic reign on top of the East in an epic seven game series. The Bulls rolled to another strong regular season behind scoring champion Dominique Wilkins while the Celtics fell back a little bit. Still, the Celtics powered through two of the Central’s best in tough series and find themselves one series away from the Finals. It’s unclear how Boston can stop ‘Nique, but it’s just as unclear about how Chicago will stop Larry Bird. If Bird can get Boston going, they’re tough to beat no matter the opponent. The key for Boston will be making sure those high 40/50 point ‘Nique games are in the 30s, while Bird gets Gus Williams and Purvis Short going. The Bulls will need Terry Cummings to step up as he did in the Miami series to put up points as well. If ‘Nique and Cummings are both on, Chicago can’t lose.
