Playoff Preview

Western Conference Round 1

Best of Five

#5
Seattle Supersonics (44-38) vs. #4 Salt Lake Stallions (46-36) – Winner Faces the #1 Rockets

Series Preview

The Stallions pulled ahead of the Sonics late in the season to win homecourt for the series. The Stallions return to the playoffs for the first time since 1980 with a new core of Reggie Theus and Dan Roundfield around elite scorer Adrian Dantley. The Sonics made a midseason trade for Portland’s Maurice Lucas and Jim Paxson to aid Jack Sikma and Mark Aguirre in making a Finals run, but the results have been uneven.

#6 Dallas Mavericks (42-40) vs. #3 San Antonio Spurs (51-31) – Winner Faces #2 Lakers

Series Preview

The defending NBA Champion Spurs haven’t played to their elite potential since the All-Star break, resulting in a loss of the Midwest Division to Houston. Perhaps a new Texan rivalry begins here as the Dallas Mavericks, in only their third season, debut in the playoffs to challenge the Spurs. Dallas had been hot since the All-Star break, with Isiah, Kiki and rookie James Worthy playing excellent basketball. Still, this is an uphill challenge for Dallas. The Mavs were unable to beat the Spurs this season, losing all six contests. George Gervin averaged 33.5 PPG against Dallas. If the Iceman freezes Dallas again, that’ll set up another Spurs-Lakers showdown.

#5
Milwaukee Bucks (50-32) vs. #4 New York Knicks (52-30) – Winner Faces the #1 Celtics

Series Preview

The Bucks were last season’s surprise breakout. Coming in as the #3 seed, they won their opening series then demolished Central Division Champion and rival Indiana on their way to a showdown with Boston. If Milwaukee wants a rematch with Boston, they need to get by a rejuvenated Knicks team. Two seasons ago the Knicks flat out won the Atlantic Division with a 60 win season, but were also victims of Larry Bird and the Celtics in the playoffs. After missing the playoffs outright last season the Knicks made major changes, most notably moving on from the legendary Red Holzman as Head Coach to Jerry Sloan, and trading for David “Skywalker” Thompson. It’s the “Squid” against “Skywalker” and Micheal Ray for a shot at revenge. One major concern for Milwaukee, New York shut them out this season.

#6 Chicago Bulls (48-34) vs. #3 Philadelphia 76ers (53-29) – Winner Plays #2 Pacers

Series Preview

It was a quieter season for the 76ers. While still one of the most balanced teams in the league, there weren’t nearly as many explosive games from Dr. J or Robert Parish this year. With the Celtics pulling away with the Atlantic Division crown the Sixers cruised to a still strong 53 win season. Their first challenger in their path to return to the NBA Finals? A young, hotshot Chicago Bulls team led by Rookie of the Year Dominique Wilkins and fellow top 3 draft pick Terry Cummings. The young duo exceeded all expectations this season, brightening Chicago basketball for years to come. Some would call this the past vs. the future, but those in Philly would say they aren’t done yet, and those in Chicago would say the present is now.

(All Box Scores to be added after the end of the season)

Game 1 - #5 Seattle Supersonics at #4 Salt Lake Stallions

Game 1 had to be a big disappointment for the Seattle in regards to their new acquisition Maurice Lucas. Dan Roundfield led the Stallions with 34, matched up against Lucas who only scored 11. Salt Lake was consistent, putting up an even 30 in each of the first three quarters, leading early and never looking back.

Sonics Stats
Jim Paxson: 20 PTS, 6 REB, 4 AST
Jack Sikma: 15 PTS, 6 REB

Game 1 - #6 Dallas Mavericks at #3 San Antonio Spurs

The defending NBA Champion Spurs were hot right out of the gate, dropping 45 points in the first quarter. While a shootout commenced, the Mavericks never quite caught up as the Spurs continued to drop bucket after bucket. Part of this was due to Dallas’ Isiah Thomas. In his playoff debut, he got into foul trouble and only managed 19 minutes on the court, scoring 5 and assisting on 4. Ice led the way for San Antonio with 31. Both James Worthy and Kiki Vandeweghe scored well in their playoff debuts, although Kiki also had 9 turnovers, losing most of them to John Lucas.

SPURS 130, Mavericks 119 (Spurs lead 1-0)

Mavericks Stats
James Worthy: 29 PTS, 10 REB, 11/18 FG
Kiki Vandeweghe: 27 PTS, 7 REB, 9 TO

Spurs Stats
George Gervin: 31 PTS, 11/17 FG, 9/10 FT
Campy Russell: 20 PTS, 7 REB
James Silas: 20 PTS, 7 REB, 4 AST
John Lucas: 12 PTS, 9 AST, 5 STL

Game 1 - #5 Milwaukee Bucks at #4 New York Knicks

This had to be a disheartening loss for Milwaukee. With Skywalker in foul trouble the Bucks should have been able to upset New York on the road. Micheal Ray Richardson’s beautiful 26-10-7-6 kept New York on top. The Knicks won the first quarter 43-33 and fended off the Bucks the rest of the way. While Sidney Moncrief played well (22-13-4), if he can’t slow down Micheal Ray this will be a short series for the Bucks.

KNICKS 113, Bucks 103 (Knicks lead 1-0)

Bucks Stats
Sidney Moncrief: 22 PTS, 13 REB, 4 STL
Marques Johnson: 24 PTS, 11 REB, 3 STL

Knicks Stats
Micheal Ray Richardson: 26 PTS, 10 REB, 7 AST, 6 STL
Bill Walton: 17 PTS, 5 REB, 5 AST, 2 BLK, 7/7 FG

Game 1 - #6 Chicago Bulls at #3 Philadelphia 76ers

With no Robert Parish, the Sixers struggled to stop Rookie of the Year Dominique Wilkins and from driving in possession after possession. A big third quarter put the Bulls on top and while the Sixers made it close down the stretch, Dr. J didn’t have enough heroics to take complete the comeback against this young Chicago Bulls squad. ‘Nique played Dr. J to a draw and fellow rookie Terry Cummings did the rest.

Bulls 103, 76ERS 101 (Bulls lead 1-0)

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 33 PTS, 5 REB, 10/15 FG, 11/13 FT, 9 TO
Terry Cummings: 23 PTS, 11/22 FG, 5 REB, 3 AST
Johnny Moore: 16 PTS, 7 REB, 6 AST, 4 STL, 7/10 FG

Maurice Cheeks: 12 PTS, 7 REB, 4 AST, 3 STL

Game 2 - #5 Seattle Supersonics at #4 Salt Lake Stallions (Stallions lead 1-0)

Not much to say here other than the Stallions failed to show up for Game 2, getting blown out on their home court 36-15 in the first quarter. Maurice Lucas made up for his game 1 struggles with a solid 20-10. Seattle steals homecourt advantage.

Supersonics 94, STALLIONS 68 (Series tied 1-1)

Sonics Stats
Maurice Lucas: 20 PTS, 10 REB, 2 BLK, 7/11 FG
Mark Aguirre: 14 PTS, 4 REB, 5 AST

Stallions Stats
Reggie Theus: 20 PTS, 6 REB

Game 2 - #6 Dallas Mavericks at #3 San Antonio Spurs (Spurs lead 1-0)

Another absolute mauling in a Game 2. The Spurs choked out the Mavericks in the first quarter with a 34-17 advantage, then also won quarters three and four by over a two-to-one margin (34-12, 32-15). Iceman scored another 31 as Isiah failed to show up once again (10-5, 3/13 FG). Mavericks needs to hope something at home helps them get back in this series.

SPURS 124, Mavericks 69 (Spurs lead 2-0)

Mavericks Stats
James Worthy: 18 PTS, 7 REB, 7 AST, 8/13 FG

Spurs Stats
George Gervin: 31 PTS, 8 REB, 6/10 FG, 18/22 FT

Bill Laimbeer: 13 PTS, 12 REB, 1 STL, 1 BLK

Game 2 - #5 Milwaukee Bucks at #4 New York Knicks (Knicks lead 1-0)

Early on this looked like another big Knicks win. David Thompson was cooking and prized mid-season Bucks acquisition Walter Davis was struggling big time. Still the Bucks had a huge third to get back into the game. Milwaukee’s Herb Williams misses a shot and the Bucks knock the ball out of bounds with 3:29 to play and the Knicks up 95-94. Micheal Ray gets the ball to Mike Glenn, but Toby Knight is called for an illegal screen for an unforced turnover.

Junior Bridgeman cuts and gets a pass from the Squid to put the Bucks up 96-95. Mike Glenn responds with a dagger from the wing to put the Knicks back up with just under three minutes to play. The Knicks play really good defense and Moncrief nearly loses the ball…before finding Marques Johnson with the shot clock just about to expire. Johnson misses the layup thanks to strong defense from Tree Rollins, but Herb Williams gets a putback dunk and the Bucks lead 98-97! Moncrief fouls Micheal Ray which sends Micheal Ray to the line. Richardson misses the first, but ties the game up with 2:17 left. 98-98.

Tree Rollins hammers Herb Williams when Williams goes up for a shot, but Williams misses both free throws and Skywalker grabs the rebound! After a little give-and-go with Glenn, Thompson tries for a layup but misses as MSG roars at the lack of a call. Bill Walton grabs the rebound for New York and finds Micheal Ray, but he misses! 90 seconds left, still tied and Milwaukee now has it. Walton makes another great play at the other end, blocking Marques Johnson’s layup and grabbing the ball. But Milwaukee comes back with their own strong defensive play as Herb Williams stops Skywalker at the rim, with Moncrief corralling the rebound! Moncrief finds Walter Davis open for three. Davis hasn’t hit a shot all day, and unfortunately that streak continued here. Walton finds Rollins who finds Thompson, who fakes a drive and finds Glenn for a baseline jumper. It’s good with 48 seconds left and the Knicks take a 100-98 lead!

Walter Davis makes another mistake and travels, which is a costly turnover for the Bucks. The Bucks elect to play defense and not foul, and they force Skywalker to miss with only 11 seconds left. Micheal Ray makes an incredible play though as he steals Herb Williams’ clear out pass and is fouled immediately. Micheal Ray and Skywalker would end up missing four free throws, but the Bucks could never regain the ball as they blow an opportunity to even up the series.

KNICKS 100, Bucks 98 (Knicks lead 2-0)

Bucks Stats
Junior Bridgeman: 27 PTS, 6 REB, 11/22 FG
Sidney Moncrief: 16 PTS, 7 REB

Mike Glenn: 22 PTS, 8 AST
Bill Walton: 4 PTS, 12 REB, 5 BLK

Game 2 - #6 Chicago Bulls at #3 Philadelphia 76ers (Bulls lead 1-0)

Despite the return of the Chief, ‘Nique and the Bulls scored at will against Philadelphia. But once again, Dr. J fought back and this one went down to the wire.

Dr. J made it 116-113 Sixers with 1:40 left after hitting two free throws. Parish makes the mistake of leaving Bulls’ center Ben Poquette open (I mean they gotta stop ‘Nique from driving) and Poquette hits a critical jumper from the free throw line to cut the lead to one. The experienced Sixers continue on though as Bobby Jones finds Mo Cheeks for a layup to make it 118-115 Sixers. Despite Philly’s best efforts, Dominique finds the ball and he hits a jumper to once again make it a one point game. ‘Nique thinks he’s got a steal on Dr. J, but Erving gets the foul call and Wilkins isn’t happy about that one. Dr. J knocks down two free throws, making it 120-117 with under a minute to play.

All the Defensive Team nods in the world can’t help Cheeks stop Dominique as ‘Nique heads to the basket. While Wilkins can’t convert, he draws the foul and that’s it for Mo this game as he’s fouled out. Dominique makes them both and again we are at a one point game. The Bulls play great defense and it’s Ron Brewer who ends up taking, and missing, a shot for the Sixers. With 14 seconds left Johnny Moore surprisingly takes it himself and hits a wide open layup! It looked like Philadelphia thought for sure that it was going to Wilkins. This puts the Bulls up 121-120 with just 8 seconds left.

Bobby Jones finds Jo Jo White, and White quickly hands off to Erving…WHO SCORES AS TIME EXPIRES! Replays show that Dr. J JUST got it off in time as the Spectrum explodes! Looking like dead men walking heading into Chicago, the Sixers instead have tied the series!

76ERS 122, Bulls 121 (Series tied 1-1)

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 41 PTS, 14/15 FG, 12/16 FT
Johnny Moore: 15 PTS, 14 AST

Game 3 -
#4 Salt Lake Stallions at #5 Seattle Supersonics (Series tied 1-1)

After a strong first half that made it seem like the Stallions would regain control, the Supersonics outscored Salt Lake 58-41 in the second half. Everyone got a piece for Seattle in Game 3 as six Sonics scored in double digits. Jack Sikma was all over the box score with a 15-16-3-2-4. The Stallions need to win once on the road to continue their comeback season.

Supersonics 102, STALLIONS 93 (Sonics lead 2-1)

Sonics Stats
Jack Sikma: 15 PTS, 16 REB, 3 AST, 2 STL, 4 BLK

Game 3 -
#3 San Antonio Spurs at #6 Dallas Mavericks (Spurs lead 2-0)

With Isiah finally showing up and rookie James Worthy on fire, Game 3 between the Mavericks and Spurs went down to the wire.

Iceman finds Campy Russell for a layup to cut the Mavericks lead down to 108-105 with just 2:39 to go. Campy gets a steal and the ball finds its way to Bill Laimbeer, who is fouled by Dallas’ Joe Meriweather. Laimbeer hits both free throws, and it’s 108-107 Mavs. Isiah runs the offense but ultimately has to try to score himself, but he misses a jumper. James Silas hits a layup thanks to another assist from Gervin, putting San Antonio ahead with 1:36 left. Dallas calls a timeout to try to stop this Spurs’ comeback.

Once again the Spurs lock up the Mavs, forcing Isiah to take it himself. This time he drives and scores, giving the Mavericks back the lead 110-109. Campy misses on the other end, and with less than a minute left the Mavericks have a chance to extend their lead. Worthy, who has had an excellent game, misses and Ice grabs the board with just 30 seconds left. Once again he defers though, and Bill Laimbeer takes a wide open three?! It misses, but Laimbeer grabs his own long rebound and finds John Lucas, who finds Campy. Campy misses…but Laimbeer gets another offensive board via a tip-in as time expires! What a heartbreaking sequence for Dallas as that will finish off their season. The Spurs complete the sweep and head off to play the Lakers.

Game 3 -
#4 New York Knicks at #5 Milwaukee Bucks (Knicks lead 2-0)

The Bucks took control early in this one, but a strong 4th led by Skywalker and Micheal Ray put the Knicks in position to finish off Milwaukee.

Marques Johnson hit two essential free throws with 1:37 left to go up 107-103. Herb Williams would foul Tree Rollins, sending Rollins to the line. Rollins hit both, making it 107-105. David Thompson snags a Herb Williams miss and finds Micheal Ray, who finds Mike Glenn for the game-tying basket with 46 seconds left. Bill Walton blocks Marques Johnson, giving the Knicks the ball with 20 seconds left and a chance to complete the sweep. Shockingly, Tree Rollins gets the ball and he takes a really quick shot that misses. Milwaukee quickly grabs the rebound and finds Walter Davis for a game-winner…but he’s blocked by Skywalker and we head to overtime tied at 107!

The Bucks dominate the first couple of minutes of OT, going up 114-109 after a Sidney Moncrief dunk, leaving 3:40 on the clock. Skywalker and the Knicks don’t give up though, as Skywalker hits two straight buckets to make it 114-113. Micheal Ray would find Mike Glenn with 2:42 left and Glenn gives the Knicks the lead! Junior Bridgeman responds, putting the Bucks back up 116-115. Bridgeman gets a huge steal and after a clock killing possession followed by an offensive rebound, the Bucks score via Marques Johnson, going up 118-115 with 1:24 to play. Walton scores for the Knicks with 1:10 left to make it 118-117. Walter Davis can’t extend the lead, giving the Knicks the chance again to finish off the Bucks. Skywalker misses a potential game winner, but Micheal Ray grabs the offensive rebound. After resetting the offense, Micheal Ray goes for it all and takes a three as time expires, but it misses and the Bucks survive to see a Game 4!

BUCKS 118, Knicks 117 (OT) (Knicks lead 2-1)

Knicks Stats
David Thompson: 46 PTS, 6 REB, 21/35 FG
Micheal Ray Richardson: 21 PTS, 15 REB, 15 AST, 2 STL

Bucks Stats
Walter Davis: 28 PTS, 6 REB, 9 AST
Marques Johnson: 26 PTS, 9 REB, 4 AST
Junior Bridgeman: 21 PTS
Sidney Moncrief: 12 PTS, 8 REB, 7 AST

Game 3 -
#3 Philadelphia 76ers at #6 Chicago Bulls (Series tied 1-1)

As this series moved to Chicago, both teams came to play. This was a close one throughout.

Johnny Moore hit a layup with 3:16 left to give Chicago a 90-87 lead, but Robert Parish responded to bring it back to a one point game. The Sixers score next on a Ron Brewer jumper that gives them the lead at 91-90. Moore misses on his next possession, and Parish grabs his 12th board of the game. Moore continues to be active though and steals the ball from Maurice Cheeks. ‘Nique, quieter tonight, gets sent to the line as Gus Gerard had no chance to stop him. He makes one of two, and the score is tied at 91. Dr. J misses but once again Parish crashes the boards and ends up scoring. With 43 seconds left, it’s 93-91 Sixers.

The Bulls would hit another free throw, but they would never get closer as the Sixers take Game 3 on the road.

76ers 96, BULLS 92 (76ers lead 2-1)

Sixers Stats
Julius Erving: 26 PTS, 7 REB
Robert Parish: 21 PTS, 13 REB, 9/14 FG
Maurice Cheeks: 13 PTS, 6 REB, 10 AST

Bulls Stats

Terry Cummings: 19 PTS, 9 REB
Johnny Moore: 13 PTS, 7 AST, 6 STL

Game 4 -
#4 Salt Lake Stallions at #5 Seattle Supersonics (Sonics lead 2-1)

The Stallions brought a 7 point lead into the fourth, but the Sonics brought it back to make this a close one. Unfortunately, Salt Lake, with their home crowd behind them, would score their last point with 3:38 left, going up 88-82 on a Reggie Theus layup. Seattle would dominate the rest of the way. First with a Mark Aguirre inside shot. James Bailey would follow-up with his own jumper, then score again with 2 minutes left to tie (Bailey caused turnovers on two straight Stallion possessions as well). The Stallions continued to fumble with a shot clock violation, followed by Aguirre scoring to give Seattle a 90-88 lead with 90 seconds left. Not another basket would be scored. Reggie Theus had a chance to tie but missed a floater from the free throw line. A disappointing way for the Stallion season to end for sure. Seattle moves on to play Houston.

Supersonics 90, STALLIONS 88 (Sonics win 3-1)

Sonics Stats
Jack Sikma: 23 PTS, 11 REB, 5 AST, 2 BLK
Maurice Lucas: 26 PTS, 13 REB, 11/21 FG

Stallions Stats
Adrian Dantley: 25 PTS

Game 4 -
#4 New York Knicks at #5 Milwaukee Bucks (Knicks lead 2-1)

Like Game 3, the Bucks led early, only for the Knicks to put together a strong 4th quarter. It didn’t look like the Bucks would falter as they were up 118-111 with 2:51 to go.

Micheal Ray got to the line, hitting two free throws to make it 118-113. Squid just loses the ball on a bad pass, and Micheal Ray gets fouled by Marques Johnson when driving, causing Johnson to foul out. This time he makes only one-of-two. Micheal Ray steals the ball from Kent Benson and Moncrief now fouls out of the game. Micheal Ray hits both free throws, making it 118-116 Bucks with 2:18 left. Still, this has to feel like things are falling apart for the Bucks.

The Bucks come out of a timeout and run good offense, with Kent Benson scoring to put the Bucks up four. With both Moncrief and Marques on the bench the Knicks have a prime chance to finish things off. Junior Bridgeman fouls Micheal Ray, who gets to the line once again. One again he only makes one, making it a three point game. Bucks miss and David Thompson scores for New York, making it a one-point game with 1:11 left. Bill Walton, who has made a lot of great plays late in games this series, steals the ball, only for Skywalker to get called for a three second violation. The Bucks chew up the maximum amount of time and get called for a shot clock violation, leaving 23 seconds left and the Bucks up 120-119.

For the third time this series the Knicks can put away the Bucks. And this time they make the play, as Micheal Ray finds Skywalker for a layup, putting the Knicks up 121-120 with 11 seconds left. But in a controversial moment, Micheal Ray is called for a foul on Walter Davis on the inbound, sending him to the line! The Knicks are irate and Davis, who arguably was the reason the Bucks lost Games 1 and 2, sinks both free throws to give the Bucks the lead! Still 10 seconds on the clock. Skywalker gets a good look, but this one rims out and the series is headed back to New York, but not without controversy!

BUCKS 122, Knicks 121 (Series tied 2-2)

Knicks Stats
David Thompson: 37 PTS, 3 REB, 3 AST, 11/24 FG, 15/15 FT
Mike Glenn: 28 PTS, 4 REB, 3 AST, 9/15 FG, 10/11 FT

Bucks Stats
Marques Johnson: 30 PTS, 12/18 FG, 5 REB
Herb Williams: 11 PTS, 7 REB, 6 AST
Sidney Moncrief: 17 PTS, 7 REB, 8 AST

Game 4 -
#3 Philadelphia 76ers at #6 Chicago Bulls (Sixers lead 2-1)

This could have went the other way, but unfortunately for Chicago, they (well not ‘Nique) just ran out of gas. A tightly contested game through the first half, the Sixers blew the game open in the third and the Bulls never recovered. Dr. J and Bobby Jones scored 24 apiece while Dominique was forced to play catch-up as Terry Cummings had a bad game. The future is bright in Chicago, but it’s not quite here yet. Sixers move on to play Indiana.

76ers 109, BULLS 94 (76ers win 3-1)

Sixers Stats
Julius Erving: 24 PTS, 6 REB, 11/19 FG
Robert Parish: 17 PTS, 15 REB, 3 BLK
Bobby Jones: 24 PTS, 8 REB, 2 STL
Maurice Cheeks: 12 PTS, 7 REB, 11 AST, 2 STL

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 37 PTS, 8 REB, 10/17 FG, 16/17 FT

Game 5 - #5 Milwaukee Bucks at #4 New York Knicks (Series tied 2-2)

The Knicks had three chance to finish off the Bucks. At the end of regulation in Game 3. In overtime in Game 3. And in regulation in Game 4. Each time the Bucks survived. And the Knicks will now regret it. The Bucks, and Walter Davis, silenced the Madison Square Garden crowd with a 67 point second half as the Bucks completed the down 2-0 comeback. Davis and Junior Bridgeman had big games with Sidney Moncrief dishing crashing the boards The Bucks get their rematch against Boston as New York goes home, wondering how they let this series slip away.

Bucks 107, KNICKS 97 (Bucks win 3-2)

Bucks Stats
Junior Bridgeman: 27 PTS, 13/23 FG
Sidney Moncrief: 13 PTS, 15 REB, 7 AST

Western Conference Semi-Finals

Best of Seven
#5
Seattle Supersonics (44-38) vs. #1 Houston Rockets (57-25)

Series Preview

The Sonics have taken their strong core to Round 2 again, once again going up against the #1 seed. This time it’s the Houston Rockets that awaits them. After falling short last season, the 1981 NBA Champions look hungry. Led by Three-Time League MVP Moses Malone and 1979 NBA Finals MVP Dennis Johnson, the Rockets are experienced and the heavy favorite. Of course, there’s history here too, as DJ won that Finals MVP for the 1979 Sonic team that won the NBA Title. For the Sonics to have a shot, both Jack Sikma and Maurice Lucas will have to slow down Moses. Easier said than done. On the plus side Seattle played Houston tough this year, so anything can happen.

#3 San Antonio Spurs (51-31) vs. #2 Los Angeles Lakers (56-26)

Series Preview

Round 3. In 1981 the Lakers gutted out a seven game victory over the Spurs as Magic Johnson was absolutely fantastic, putting up a triple double in the deciding game. But last year, the Spurs got revenge in the Western Conference Finals. The Spurs came out with a balanced attack, although Iceman’s 47 point Game 3 set the tone for the series. The Spurs then accomplished something the Magic led Lakers have not. Not only did last year’s victory send San Antonio to the Finals, but the Spurs also captured a ring too. The Lakers are healthy and may be undervalued because of injuries this season, but you can never count out a team defending its title.

Eastern Conference Semi-Finals

Best of Seven
#5 Milwaukee Bucks (50-32) vs. #1 Boston Celtics (62-20)

Series Preview

Another rematch from last season’s Conference Finals. Milwaukee’s late season run last year somewhat carried over to this year. A midseason trade for Walter Davis gave Milwaukee firepower they didn’t have last year, and that firepower came through huge in the First Round of the playoffs against the Knicks. Sid the Squid and company have their work cut out for them. Boston’s own midseason acquisition of Purvis Short changed the entire team, and of course League MVP Larry Bird looks determined to lead Boston to a third straight NBA Finals.

For the third straight season the Pacers have locked up the Central Division and the #2 seed. For the second time in those three seasons they face Dr. J and the 76ers. This is a new look Pacer team, with Alex English now flanked by scorer Otis Birdsong. Game 1 - #5 Seattle Supersonics at #1 Houston Rockets

Seattle struggled to get going in the first half and while they made a run, it wasn’t enough as the Rockets took down Game 1. Moses Malone struggled to contain Jack Sikma, but his 20-14-3-2-2 stuffed the stat sheet to co-lead Houston (Sikma had a 31-9). Dennis Johnson led the way against his old team with 34.

Sonics Stats
Jack Sikma: 31 PTS, 9 REB, 11/15 FG

Moses Malone: 20 PTS, 14 REB, 3 AST, 2 STL, 2 BLK, 9/12 FG

Game 1 - #3 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Los Angeles Lakers

Talk about a statement.

The Los Angeles Lakers decimated the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1, winning by a 50+ point margin. Not only did the Lakers have a 43 point quarter, but they also held San Antonio to 7 in the fourth. The Lakers had 8 players in double-digit scoring, led by Bernard King with 27 and Buck Williams with 25. Ice has 21 in 17 minutes before the starting unit was benched.

LAKERS 138, Spurs 87 (Lakers lead 1-0)

Spurs Stats
George Gervin: 21 PTS, 2 STL

Lakers Stats

Game 1 - #5 Milwaukee Bucks at #1 Boston Celtics

Maybe the Bucks were tired after their grueling series against New York.

The Celtics blew out the Bucks in Game 1, scoring more points in the first quarter than Milwaukee would in the first-half. Boston led 66-34 at the half and Milwaukee never got back into it. Bird was active, but wasn’t even the main catalyst to the Celtics big win, as Purvis Short and Gus Williams scored 20+ points apiece without playing even 25 minutes.

CELTICS 112, Bucks 88 (Celtics lead 1-0)

Bucks Stats
Artis Gilmore: 14 PTS, 5 REB, 4 BLK
Junior Bridgeman: 16 PTS

Celtics Stats
Gus Williams: 22 PTS, 6 REB, 2 STL, 9/15 FG
Purvis Short: 20 PTS, 5 REB, 8/14 FG
Larry Bird: 17 PTS, 5 REB, 6 AST

Game 1 - #3 Philadelphia 76ers at #2 Indiana Pacers

Early on, it looked like an Indiana Pacer blowout as they raced to 44 1st quarter points and a 15 point lead. But the experienced Sixers, led by Dr. J, Julius Erving, put together a strong 2nd and 3rd quarter and took the lead by the middle of the third quarter and never looked back. While Indiana’s scoring duo of Alex English (40 PTS) and Otis Birdsong (33 PTS) did their expected damage, the entire Sixer starting lineup played well and shot over 50% from the field, leaving Indiana in the dust.

76ers 128, PACERS 117 (76ers lead 1-0)

Sixers Stats
Julius Erving: 31 PTS, 7 REB, 7 AST, 2 STL, 11/17 FG
Robert Parish: 24 PTS, 10 REB, 6 AST, 3 STL, 3 BLK

Game 2 - #5 Seattle Supersonics at #1 Houston Rockets (Rockets lead 1-0)

Game 2 was a low scoring defensive affair that unfortunately for Seattle, was swung by the Moses Malone-Jack Sikma matchup. Moses pulverized Sikma and Seattle for 19 points and 22 boards, leaving Sikma 0/10 from the field. Seattle still seemingly had a shot in the 4th, but Houston pulled away. Seattle will look to gain ground in Seattle.

Game 2 - #3 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 1-0)

In Game 2 the Magic Man put on a show and the defending Champion Spurs couldn’t keep up. Magic led the Lakers to a 2-0 lead over the Spurs with a 28-12, finding Jamaal Wilkes, Buck Williams and Bernard King over and over again all night. Ice led the Spurs with 33, but the Spurs just couldn’t hang and suddenly find themselves in a situation where they need to beat LA four out of five times. At least the series is going back to Texas.

Game 2 - #5 Milwaukee Bucks at #1 Boston Celtics (Celtics lead 1-0)

It was another show from MVP Larry Bird as Bird destroyed the Bucks to lead Boston to a 2-0 lead. Bird went for a 27-10-7-3-2 and no one on Milwaukee had any way to challenge him. Purvis Short added 25. Milwaukee needs to figure out something to get back in this series.

Game 2 - #3 Philadelphia 76ers at #2 Indiana Pacers (76ers lead 1-0)

After how Game 1 went down, pundits had the Sixers rolling over Indiana. Interestingly, Game 2 began the same way, heck, even better, for the Pacers as Game 1. Indiana led 44-16 at the end of the first and again blew this massive advantage. The Sixers tied the game by the end of the third, setting up a close and gritty 4th. Only the Pacers, led by Alex English’s 39 points, took care of business by winning the quarter, and the game, by 13. Indiana needs to find a way to stop blowing these leads if they want to have any chance in Philadelphia.

Game 3 -

The Sonics broke through in the third quarter of Game 3, taking a double-digit lead and holding on as the Rockets again struggled to score the basketball. It wasn’t pretty, but Maurice Lucas founds his way to 20 points to lead Seattle. Jack Sikma played Moses to a near draw, which seemingly was enough to hold the #1 seeded Rockets at bay.

Game 1 - #3 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Los Angeles Lakers

It was a wild one in San Antonio!

The Spurs had broken the game open with 49 points in the third quarter, taking a double-digit lead behind a masterpiece of a game from Ice, but Magic and the Lakers stormed back in the fourth and were down just two, 129-127, with 1:41 to go. Ice missed a jumper to put the Spurs back up two possession, but John Lucas made a huge defensive play, stripping Magic as Magic drove through the lane. Gervin drew a triple-team and found Bill Laimbeer with 48 seconds left to put the Spurs up 131-127.

Laimbeer mauls Alvan Adams on the other end, and Adams makes two free throws, again making it a two point game. Ice takes it himself as time ticks down and no one can stop him, forcing Buck Williams to knock him down in the paint, nearly starting a riot. Gervin drains both free throws (points 50 and 51 for him) and with 22 seconds left it looks like SA will survive. Buck Williams finds a basket with 5 seconds left and the Lakers foul James Silas with pretty much no time on the clock. Silas only makes one, making it a three point game, but the Lakers have no time for a shot and the defending champs send the Lakers a statement that it’s not their conference…yet.

Game 3 -
#1 Boston Celtics at #5 Milwaukee Bucks (Celtics lead 2-0)

What looked like the Bucks best chance to get back into the series fell apart in the second half. Milwaukee seemingly found its groove, leading 54-44 at the half. The Celtics completely turned the tables in the second half, winning the third 35-24 and the fourth 20-11, resulting in a commanding 3-0 series lead. The key match-up of the series seems to be the battle of the defensive point guards. Sidney Moncrief has the reputation as one of the best defensive guards in the game while Gus Williams is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Gus has been handily winning that battle, and he outright led all scorers with 23 too. It looks over for the Bucks.

Game 3 - #2 Indiana Pacers at #3 Philadelphia 76ers (Series tied 1-1)

Any momentum Indiana built from Game 2 disappeared quickly as Dr. J and Robert Parish dominated Game 3. Alex English and Otis Birdsong went a combined 19 for 54 and the Pacers just never had a chance. Erving looked like the Dr. J of old, with 32 points to go with 9 boards and 6 assists.

We have a series! The Sonics suddenly went on a run right before halftime and never looked back. Seattle, for the third straight time, held the Rockets to under 90 points and tied the series at 2 apiece. Jack Sikma got the better of the former three-time MVP Moses Malone with a 24-9 against an 18-14 (but on 6/22 FG). Aiding Sikma was Mark Aguirre with 24 points of his own. Game 4 - #2 Los Angeles Lakers at #3 San Antonio Spurs (Lakers lead 2-1)

It may be time to rename the Hemisfair Arena to the Ice Palace as George Gervin put on another show to tie the series against the Lakers.

The Spurs stormed to a 49-34 first quarter lead and never looked back, dropping 130+ on the Lakers for the second straight game. Gervin scored 38. Bernard King, being fed all night by Magic was able to go toe-to-toe with Ice, but the rest of the Spurs outplayed the rest of the Lakers. Game 4 - #1 Boston Celtics at #5 Milwaukee Bucks (Celtics lead 3-0)

This was never happening for the Bucks. While the Squid played Gus Williams to a draw, that’s all that seemingly went well for Milwaukee. Walter Davis, the prized mid-season acquisition that was supposed to get the Bucks over the hump, went down with a hamstring injury just five minutes into the game. Marques Johnson, okay at best all series, again barely made an impact with 12 points. Larry Bird continued his torturing of Junior Bridgeman with a 17-13-10 triple-double. The Bucks waited a year and went through a war with the Knicks to get this rematch. We’ll have to see how they’ll retool next year because this was a massacre.

did all he could, but the Pacers fell behind in the first and never caught up. English’s 43 wasn’t enough to offset a combined 58 points from Chief and Dr. J. Otis Birdsong was solid with 20, but Mo Cheeks outscored him with 21. Indiana needs to win three-in-a-row or they will fail to win a playoff series for the fourth straight year. Game 5 - #5 Seattle Supersonics at #1 Houston Rockets (Series tied 2-2)

The Sonics looked like they may have the upset in them as they took a small lead into halftime, but a rough 10 point quarter allowed Houston to regain the advantage and never lose it. Seattle hung tough, but they fell just short, losing by six. Unfortunately for the Sonics, the Moses Malone-Jack Sikma battle once again determined things, as Sikma got nothing going with 7 points and 8 rebounds, while Moses destroyed everything in his path for a 20-17-6-3. The Rockets had two other scorers with over 20 points, DJ and Kevin Grevey, and it was just a bit too much. Still, the road team has yet to win this series. If Seattle can keep that going we’ll be back in Houston for Game 7.

Game 5 - #3 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Los Angeles Lakers (Series tied 2-2)

The media was calling this the most important game of Magic Johnson’s young career, and Magic delivered big time. His 27-8-8 led the Lakers to a scoring flurry that the Spurs couldn’t match on the road. Powered by a 72 point first-half, the Lakers never trailed and put the defending champion Spurs on the brink of elimination. Like the Seattle-Houston series, the home team has won every game. Seattle again proved to be no pushover at home, winning Game 6 with a strong second half and sending the series back to Houston for the deciding Game 7. Once again the Rockets struggled to score, only producing 90 points. Jack Sikma patrolled the paint effectively, recording 6 blocked shots and holding Moses to 5/15 FG. Game 6 - #2 Los Angeles Lakers at #3 San Antonio Spurs (Lakers lead 3-2)

This time, there was too much Magic for Ice to make up for.

The Lakers finished off the defending champions on the road. Magic Johnson followed up his brilliant 27-8-8 with another playoff masterpiece, a 36-7-14 with 20 free throws and the Spurs just had no shot. Gervin scored 35, but unfortunately the Spurs needed another 50 pointer to get to Game 7. The Spurs received a standing ovation for a tough title defense. Magic and the Lakers head to the Conference Finals for the third straight year and will face either the team they beat them two seasons ago in the Rockets, or a feisty Supersonics team that would serve as a rematch from the Semis last year.

Game 6 - #2 Indiana Pacers at #3 Philadelphia 76ers (76ers lead 3-2)

Indiana was not going quietly.

With 3:42 left, Dudley Bradley hit two free throws to give Indiana a 108-107 lead as they fight for their life. Bobby Jones was quick to score to give the Sixers back the lead, and Otis Birdsong loses the ball to Steve Mix. Mo Cheeks misses a jumper…but makes up for it by stealing the ball from Otis (again!). This time he finds Ron Brewer and Brewer hits a jumper to make it 111-108 Sixers with 2:43 left.

Alex English looks to take over, but he misses a jumper…only to tip in his own miss! The Sixers miss on the other way down but Jones grabs the rebound. James Edwards blocks Jones’ shot though, but when Jones tries to put it up again he’s fouled by Michael Cooper. Jones hits both free throws, and it’s 113-110 with 1:43 left. Cooper makes up for it though. As Philly presses Dudley Bradley can’t get the ball to English, but finds Cooper who drills a three to tie the game! Dr. J quickly drives in for a jam that lights up Philly, but the Pacers, showing great restraint, quickly get their own dunk via Bradley! It’s 115-115!

Dr. J misses and English corrals the rebound. English takes it himself but misses. Otis grabs the offensive rebound and the ball makes it back to English, but Jones does a great job and English misses again, leaving 32 seconds on the clock and Philly with the ball. Dr. J finds Mo Cheeks, who hits a shot with 10 seconds left to give Philly the lead! Indiana only has 10 seconds but come out of the time out completely fooling Dr. J! Erving goes for the double on English, and English finds Cooper for the game tying shot! Erving gets one more chance at winning the series, but it’s short and we go to overtime!

Philly goes ahead with 2:17 left on a Mo Cheeks jumper from the free throw line, 122-121. Otis responds though as the pressure starts to build. Pacers lead by one. Michael Cooper robs Erving, but English can’t convert. Sixers knock the ball out of bounds though and Indiana gets to kill some clock. Otis ends up not getting a shot off and gets called for the shot clock violation. Still, it’s Indiana 123, Sixers 122 with 1:09 left in OT.

Mo Cheeks finds Bobby Jones for the lead! English looks to take it himself, but he gets doubled and a wide open Dudley Bradley scores to put Indiana back up by one with 25 seconds left. Dr. J drives to try to end the series and James Edwards fouls him on the way up with just 11 seconds left. Shockingly, on his home court, Erving misses both free throws and English grabs the board! Chaos ensues as English gets the ball to Otis and the Sixers fail to send Indiana to the line…and the Pacers escape with perhaps their biggest win in franchise history as they send the series back to Indiana! Dr. J sits near center court with his hands on his head, shocked that he blew both free throw attempts!

Game 7 - #5 Seattle Supersonics at #1 Houston Rockets (Series tied 3-3)

It’s only fitting that these two teams go down to the wire. It didn’t look that way at first as the Rockets led 40-25 at the end of the first, but Seattle brought it all the way back. Seattle and Houston traded the lead multiple times in the 4th before Houston went on a small run. Mark Aguirre hit a shot with 2:18 left to bring Seattle back within three, 111-108. Jack Sikma grabs a rebound off a Allen Leavell miss and Jim Paxson buries a three to tie the game at 111 with 1:40 left!

DJ gets two chances to convert, but can’t on either as Sikma grabs another board with just 50 seconds left. The Summit gets awfully quiet as James Bailey misses…but Sikma gets a tip in over Moses to give Seattle a two-point lead with 30 seconds left! The crowd continues to go crazy as Houston’s play looks to be an absolute mess. DJ can’t find a shot, and the Rockets can’t get Moses a good look either. Time is running out on the shot clock and Allen Leavell heaves a three…AND HITS IT! Just seven seconds left! Seattle calls timeout as the Summit is shaking with cheering fans.

The Sonics have one more chance and Maurice Lucas gets a good look from the free throw line…but it rims out! DJ grabs the rebound and that’s it. The Rockets barely, just barely…survive the Supersonics!

Game 7 - #3 Philadelphia 76ers at #2 Indiana Pacers (Series tied 3-3)

The Sixers took an early lead, looking to end this Pacer momentum and head to Boston, but the Pacers stormed back with a big 37-point third quarter and took a two-point lead into the fourth. Both teams went back-and-forth in the deciding quarter of the series. Mo Cheeks hit a jumper to put Philly up three with 3 minutes to go, 120-117.

Bobby Jones steals the ball from Alex English, but Mo Cheeks can’t convert. Otis Birdsong, having arguably his best game as a Pacer at just the right time, finds Dudley Bradley and Indiana brings it within one. The Sixers again can’t convert, and Alex English gets to the line. English hits both free throws as the Pacers go up 121-120 with just 1:47 to play. Mo Cheeks finds Ron Brewer, who hits a jumper from the free throw line to put Philly back up with 1:24 to play. Bradley gets to the line on the other end and makes one, tying the game at 122. Brewer mishandles a pass from Julius Erving, and Alex English hits a jumper with 44 seconds left to give Indiana a 124-122 lead!

Michael Cooper’s
tremendous defense on Erving stifles the Sixers as Cheeks is forced to take a jumper to tie, but misses. Dr. J grabs the rebound but Cooper is all over him. Eventually the ball gets to Robert Parish who shoots as time expires…and MISSES! The Indiana Pacers complete the 3-1 comeback and advance to play Boston! One has to wonder what could have been for Philly had Erving hit those free throws in Game 6. Otis Birdsong, stranded on the Kings at the beginning of the season, hugs Alex English in the middle of Market Square Arena as the Sixers walk off, dejected.

Playoff Preview
Western Conference Finals

Best of Seven
#2 Los Angeles Lakers (56-26)
vs. #1 Houston Rockets (57-25)

Series Preview

It all comes down to this. A rematch of the 1981 Western Conference Finals where Moses and the Rockets made short work of the Lakers. This is quite a different match-up now though, as the Lakers have more firepower with Buck Williams and Bernard King. The trade-off of course is that Alvan Adams, not Kareem Abdul-Jabbar patrols the middle. Adams is a very good player, but when Moses Malone is on the other side you’ll need all the help one can get. Of course, the Rockets have to make a decision too. Can they trust Allen Leavel, who just hit the biggest shot of his career against Seattle, to at least somewhat slow down Magic Johnson? Or do the Rockets put Dennis Johnson on Magic and let King or Jamaal Wilkes get their points. This is a series that can go either way and both teams are hungry to get to the Finals. Houston, of course, would like to regain their crown on top of the NBA while this is the third straight Western Conference Finals appearance for the Lakers. You’d think they want to break through and finally secure a Finals berth. It’s Moses and DJ vs. Magic and Bernard. It should be a great series.

#2 Indiana Pacers (52-30) vs. #1 Boston Celtics (62-20)

Series Preview

At first this looks like an easy series for Boston, but Indiana has a surprising number of positives doing their way that may tip their hand. For one, Indiana played Boston very well this season, even after the Purvis Short trade to Boston. Otis Birdsong is an odd mismatch even for Defensive Player of the Year Gus Williams, as Birdsong is a swingman playing the point guard position. Also, the whole point of obtaining Michael Cooper for Indiana was likely in case they had to play David Thompson in New York or Larry Bird in this series. Lastly, while Indiana has some tools to mess with Bird, can the Celtics stop Alex English? English had a fantastic series against Philadelphia with All-Defensive Team member Bobby Jones all over him. English finished that series averaging 31.1 PPG, keeping Indiana alive. Of course, the flip side to all of this is that Larry Bird has been nearly unstoppable all season. Bird is the MVP of the league after all…and as a bonus for the Celtics Bird is also Indiana basketball royalty. Smart money is probably on the Celtics, but again, the Pacers look more prepared than one would think.

Game 1 - #2 Los Angeles Lakers at #1 Houston Rockets

The 1983 Western Conference Finals started with a close one. A back-and-forth game throughout, a Jamaal Wilkes jumper brings the Lakers within one with 2:41 left. Bernard King fouls Allen Leavell, sending him to the line, and Leavell drains both free throws to get the game to 100-97. King makes up for the foul though, as Magic finds him to bring the Rockets lead to one. The Rockets are relentless as DJ hits Kevin Grevey for an open jumper, making it 102-99 with exactly two minutes left.

Wilkes misses and Moses grabs the board, looking to extend the lead. DJ can’t convert, but Moses grabs an offensive board and eventually Leavell is sent to the line again, this time by Magic. Leavell hits both to make it a five point game. Magic finds Spencer Haywood on the other end for a basket to make it a 104-101 game, but there’s only 39 seconds left. Leavell finds Moses as the Lakers try to clamp on D, but Moses breaks free and scores with only 17 seconds left. While Magic would drain a three, time has run out and the Rockets escape with a Game 1 victory.

Game 1 - #2 Indiana Pacers at #1 Boston Celtics

After all the talk about how Michael Cooper could slow down Larry Bird, Bird went on a tear in Game 1, dropping a 33/10/7 as the Celtics rolled over the Pacers in Game 1. Boston stormed out to 69 first half points and had 111 by the end of the third. Indiana had a very top heavy scoring game, with James Edwards, Alex English and Dudley Bradley all topping 24 points, but then no one else got in double digits. If Boston is going to shoot 56% all series, this will be a quick one.

CELTICS 134, Pacers 112 (Celtics lead 1-0)

Pacers Stats
James Edwards: 33 PTS, 11/18 FG
Otis Birdsong: 31 PTS, 10 REB, 2 STL
Alex English: 24 PTS, 6 REB, 7 AST

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 33 PTS, 10 REB, 7 AST, 3 STL, 1 BLK, 12/24 FG, 3/4 3P
Gus Williams: 22 PTS, 6 AST, 2 STL
Purvis Short: 21 PTS, 7 REB, 9/15 FG

Game 2 - #2 Los Angeles Lakers at #1 Houston Rockets (Rockets lead 1-0)

A tied game heading into the 4th quarter, the Lakers pulled out all the stops to wrest home court advantage from the Rockets and win Game 2. Bernard and Magic finished with 49 combined points to lead the way. Moses grabbed every rebound he saw, but most of them were off Rocket misses. Both Moses and DJ had big games for Houston, but there wasn’t much help otherwise. Houston now has to find a win in LA to win this series.

Lakers 106, ROCKETS 98 (Series tied 1-1)

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 24 PTS, 8 REB, 7 AST, 8/12 FG
Bernard King: 25 PTS, 4 REB, 5 AST, 7/12 FG
Jamaal Wilkes: 13 PTS, 11 REB, 5 STL

Game 2 - #2 Indiana Pacers at #1 Boston Celtics (Celtics lead 1-0)

Michael Cooper
did a better job on Larry Bird, at least from a scoring perspective, while leading the Pacers himself with 25. Unfortunately, Bird still found a way to control the game, recording 17 assists, most of them to Purvis Short, who dropped 35. The Pacers once again just could not hang with the Celtics. Alex English spent the game in foul trouble and while he scored at a tremendous rate, he was only on the court for 20 minutes. Otis Birdsong also had 5 fouls, but more damaging was that he shot 6/23 from the field. Gus aided Short with 25 points of his own. The Celtics scored 86 first-half points, rendering Indiana’s impressive 64 in the same timeframe moot. We’ll see if the Pacers have anything for the Celtics in Indiana.

CELTICS 132, Pacers 125 (Celtics lead 2-0)

Pacers Stats
Michael Cooper: 25 PTS, 3 REB, 3 AST, 10/16 FG, 3/3 3P
James Edwards: 21 PTS, 9 REB, 5 AST, 2 BLK, 9/15 FG
Otis Birdsong: 18 PTS, 9 REB, 10 AST, 2 STL, 6/23 FG

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 21 PTS, 8 REB, 17 AST, 2 STL
Gus Williams: 25 PTS, 6 REB, 10/17 FG
Purvis Short: 35 PTS, 15/21 FG

Game 3 - #1 Houston Rockets at #2 Los Angeles Lakers (Series tied 1-1)

All hail the King.

Bernard King went off against the Rockets in Game 3, missing one FG all game in route to 39 points and the Rockets couldn’t stop him. Houston actually held a small first half lead before things completely fell apart for them in the second half. It’s beginning to look like that without one of those throwback Moses games that the Rockets stand little chance to take down LA. That or the Rockets need a third guy to step up like Allen Leavell did in Game 1.

LAKERS 116, Rockets 104 (Lakers lead 2-1)

Rockets Stats
Moses Malone: 24 PTS, 17 REB, 1 STL
Dennis Johnson: 29 PTS, 11/21 FG

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 39 PTS, 6 REB, 6 AST, 11/12 FG, 17/21 FT
Jamaal Wilkes: 22 PTS
Magic Johnson: 20 PTS, 8 AST, 5/7 FG, 10/10 FT
Alvan Adams: 10 PTS, 13 REB, 8 AST

Game 3 - #1 Boston Celtics at #2 Indiana Pacers (Celtics lead 2-0)

This will be a tough one for Indiana to swallow. Tied heading into the final quarter, Boston blew out the Pacers on their home court with a 25-13 advantage, securing a 3-0 series lead. Larry Bird was phenomenal again, although Alex English played him to a draw. Problem is no one stepped up to help English while Purvis Short went off for another 26 points. We’ll see if Indiana can avoid the sweep in Game 4.

Celtics 110, PACERS 98 (Celtics lead 3-0)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 30 PTS, 10 REB, 8 AST
Purvis Short: 26 PTS, 11/18 FG

Pacers Stats
Alex English: 26 PTS, 9 REB, 4 AST, 16/26 FG
Dudley Bradley: 17 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST, 6 STL, 3 BLK

Game 4 - #1 Houston Rockets at #2 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 2-1)

There’s just too much firepower on the Lakers side. Bernard went off again for 35 and this time Buck Williams scored 33, leaving the Rockets in the dust in Game 4. The Lakers took a commanding 32-23 lead in the first and it never really got closer, with LA adding 40 in the third as well. Moses got his points and his boards, but he hasn’t shot a great % and again it must be said that without the monster 40-20 game the Lakers are winning this series.

LAKERS 118, Rockets 101 (Lakers lead 3-1)

Rockets Stats
Moses Malone: 28 PTS, 16 REB, 4 AST, 2 BLK
Dennis Johnson: 18 PTS

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 35 PTS, 7 REB, 9/16 FG, 17/22 FT
Buck Williams: 33 PTS, 12/17 FG
Magic Johnson: 19 PTS, 6 REB, 10 AST

Game 4 - #1 Boston Celtics at #2 Indiana Pacers (Celtics lead 3-0)

Not so fast! The Pacers, at least for one night, found a formula that stopped the Celtics in their tracks as the Celtic’s undefeated playoff run was snapped. The Pacers pulled away in the 4th, with Alex English leading the way with another 34 points. Michael Cooper did the job he said he would. While Larry Bird did lock in a triple-double (21-11-10), he also shot 8/25 and had six turnovers. Purvis Short was slowed down as well. The goalpost has now moved slightly for Indiana. They’re still in deep trouble, but they did just make a 3-1 comeback against Philadelphia.

PACERS 106, Celtics 96 (Celtics lead 3-1)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 21 PTS, 11 REB, 10 AST, 2 STL
Gerald Henderson: 20 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST, 4 STL
Jawann Oldham: 6 PTS, 6 REB, 6 BLK

Pacers Stats
Alex English: 34 PTS, 8 REB, 6 AST, 3 STL, 2 BLK
Michael Cooper: 16 PTS, 12 REB, 5 AST
Otis Birdsong: 19 PTS, 9 REB, 5 AST, 8/14 FG

Game 5 - #2 Los Angeles Lakers at #1 Houston Rockets (Lakers lead 3-1)

With the Lakers just one win away from that elusive Finals appearance in the Magic Johnson era…they came out lifeless as the Rockets stormed to a 55-41 halftime lead. Unfortunately for Houston, their scoring woes returned and the Lakers got back into the game.

Buck Williams hit a jumper from the wing to make it 90-89 Lakers, the first LA lead with only 3:49 left. Dennis Johnson got the Rockets back the lead with a surprisingly open layup, but he fouls Cliff Levingston. Levingston misses both free throws and the Lakers fumble the rebound out of bounds! Moses can’t score though, but Buck Williams misses too. Levingston gets a key tip-in with 3:03 left to put the Lakers up 92-91! Neither team can hit a shot as time ticks away until Kevin Grevey is fouled on a layup attempt. He makes both, putting the Rockets back on top by one. More missing from both teams until Grevey fouls Magic.

Magic, determined to make the Finals, drains both free throws to put the Lakers up 94-93 with just a minute left. Of all people Rudy T ends up playing hero on the other end, draining a shot with 46 seconds left and giving the Rockets a 95-94 lead! The Lakers hope to put the Rockets away here, but Bernard, amazing all series, misses and the Rockets get the ball back. LA can’t get the ball back either, electing to play defense as opposed to foul and the game ends at the 95-94 score mark, meaning we return to LA…and the Rockets remain alive.

ROCKETS 95, Lakers 94 (Lakers lead 3-2)

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 26 PTS, 12 REB, 7 AST, 1 STL, 1 BLK, 6/12 FG, 3/4 3P, 11/12 FT
Alvan Adams: 17 PTS, 9 REB, 6/11 FG
Bernard King: 16 PTS, 8 REB (all OFF), 5 AST, 2 STL

Rockets Stats
Dennis Johnson: 28 PTS, 5 REB, 3 AST, 2 STL
Moses Malone: 20 PTS, 10 REB
Allen Leavell: 7 PTS, 11 AST

Game 5 - #2 Indiana Pacers at #1 Boston Celtics (Celtics lead 3-1)

The city of Boston was itching for their Celtics to return to the NBA Finals for a third straight time, but the pesky Pacers refused to go down quietly. The game started wildly with a 41-40 frame for the Celtics. Boston built a small lead heading into the fourth and then were shockingly outplayed badly in the Boston Garden by Indiana. Michael Cooper once again put the screws to Larry Bird (5/23 FG) as the Pacers shocked Boston in Game 5. What seemed like a sure thing has suddenly turned into a series, as if Indiana can win Game 6 in Indiana we will head to a deciding Game 7…and a chance for the Pacers to make history. The fans in the Boston Garden were left completely stunned.

Pacers 119, CELTICS 113 (Celtics lead 3-2)

Pacers Stats
Michael Cooper: 29 PTS, 7 REB, 11/18 FG
Alex English: 23 PTS, 7 REB, 1 STL, 1 BLK
Otis Birdsong: 24 PTS, 5 REB, 5 AST
Dudley Bradley: 15 PTS, 8 REB, 8 AST, 3 STL

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 23 PTS, 10 REB, 4 AST, 5/23 FG, 11/11 FT
Purvis Short: 22 PTS
Gus Williams: 21 PTS

Game 6 - #1 Houston Rockets at #2 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 3-2)

While only his 4th year in the league and 23 years old, it felt that Magic Johnson was chasing the NBA Finals forever. That is, until today. Not even a migraine could stop Magic as the Lakers finished off the Rockets. Houston once again struggled to score and keep up with LA. Moses Malone had perhaps his best game in the series, a 27-17 on good shooting, but once again didn’t get much help past DJ. The Lakers had a strong trio in this one, as Magic, Bernard King and Buck Williams all went for 22+ points. It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for Houston as they will likely struggle to build around Moses and DJ without other pieces. As for the Lakers, they return to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1973. We await to see if the Finals matchup that was destined four years ago, LA vs. Boston, materializes…or if Indiana can pull off the upset and comeback and create their own legacy.

LAKERS 106, Rockets 98 (Lakers win 4-2)

Rockets Stats
Moses Malone: 27 PTS, 17 REB, 12/18 FG
Dennis Johnson: 24 PTS, 6 REB, 6 AST

Lakers Stats
Buck Williams: 24 PTS, 5/7 FG, 14/21 FT
Bernard King: 23 PTS, 9 REB, 6 AST
Magic Johnson: 22 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST

Game 6 - #1 Boston Celtics at #2 Indiana Pacers (Celtics lead 3-2)

The Pacers sure made it interesting. Game 6 was close throughout, but the Celtics were just a bit better and pulled away late in the 4th. Larry Bird got the last laugh against Michael Cooper, putting up a gorgeous 38-14-13 and finishing off the Pacers in Indiana to return to the NBA Finals. Alex English did all he could to keep up with Bird, but the MVP was just too good. The Pacers, who looked dead in the water in the semis against the Sixers, received a standing ovation from their fans for not giving up. Indiana won a total of five elimination games this playoffs and it’ll be interesting to see how the English-Birdsong pairing fairs in the future. As of right now, the Celtics are the kings of the East, and they head into their third straight NBA Finals against the Lakers, a match-up media and fans all around the world said was destined.

Celtics 114, PACERS 108 (Celtics win 4-2)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 38 PTS, 14 REB, 13 AST, 13/29 FG, 6/10 3P
Gus Williams: 24 PTS, 6 REB, 3 AST, 1 STL, 1 BLK

Pacers Stats
Alex English: 30 PTS, 10 REB
Michael Cooper; 22 PTS, 8/14 FG
James Edwards: 20 PTS, 14 REB

Playoff Preview
NBA FINALS

Best of Seven (2-3-2 Format)
#2 Los Angeles Lakers (56-26)
vs. #1 Boston Celtics (62-20)

Series Preview

And here we are. For four years we waited a Lakers-Celtics showdown led by Magic and Bird. There are a lot of interesting players on both teams though that could easily swing this series. A key factor will be Finals experience. Noy only are the Celtics in their third straight Finals, but Defensive Player of the Year Gus Williams also won the 1979 NBA Title with the Supersonics. This will be his 5th Finals overall. He will have his hands full with 1982 NBA MVP Magic Johnson regardless. The Lakers do have some Finals experience as well, as center Alvan Adams played for the Suns team that lost to the Celtics in 1976. The Laker firepower has been scary at times. It’s easy to remember that this team went 56-26 despite a ton of injuries, and when healthy they ran through the league. There are no injuries on the Laker side as Bernard King, Jamaal Wilkes and Buck Williams are all ready (as well as Magic of course). Boston will be without young back-up center Jawann Oldham. Oldham has shown to be a shot blocking force on the bench and the lack of his physicality and defense could be key for the Lakers. It’s LA vs. Boston, Magic vs. Bird, Lakers vs. Celtics and the NBA Finals. It should be a great series.

My pick: Los Angeles Lakers in 6, and Magic Johnson is the MVP. Oh, and they draft Ralph Sampson or Byron Scott with their trade pick...

Game 1 - #2 Los Angeles Lakers at #1 Boston Celtics

All the big players came to play in Game 1. Boston seemingly had the game in hand, but the Lakers came storming back in the 4th to take the lead. Larry Bird, close to a triple-double, grabs a rebound and finds an open Cedric Maxwell across court for a layup that makes it 124-123 Celtics with 3:43 left.

Bird shows off his underrated defensive ability as he blocks Buck Williams, although LA retains the ball. Bernard King can’t convert and the Celtics look to build the lead. King then fouls Gus Williams, but Gus misses both free throws! Magic pushes the pace but his pass to Jamaal Wilkes leads to a missed shot. Purvis Short travels on the other end, resulting in a huge “refs you suck chant”. Bernard King scores, and LA takes the lead with 125-124 with 2:05 left.

Boston grabs an offensive rebound and that leads to a Caldwell Jones basket from Bird, putting Boston back up again. Magic, who has been incredible in his first Finals game, makes a terrible pass that sails out of bounds. Bird makes no such mistake, finding Purvis Short for his 9th assist, putting Boston up by three with 50 seconds left. Magic pushes the pace again and finds Wilkes, who scores with 31 seconds left, making it 128-127 Boston.

The Lakers decide to play defense as opposed to foul. The Celtics hold onto the ball and finds Bird with 10 seconds left. Bird’s jumper misses, and Alvan Adams grabs the rebound. LA calls timeout with just three seconds left. Magic is the chosen inbounder…and he finds Wilkes…who HITS a turnaround jumper to WIN GAME 1! The Lakers run off the court as Boston Garden is left in stunned silence!

Game 2 - #2 Los Angeles Lakers at #1 Boston Celtics (Lakers lead 1-0)

There was no doubt about Game 2. Had Boston lost here, they would have had to travel to LA needing to win two-of-three on the road just to stay alive. None of that matters as the Celtics cruised to a 20 point lead by the half, with nothing remotely looking like a comeback from LA. Still, the Lakers got their home split, and if they can sweep their home games they won’t need to return to Boston. This one was all Larry Bird, with 39 points and six threes.

CELTICS 128, Lakers 93 (Series tied 1-1)

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 20 PTS, 6 REB, 10 AST, 3 STL, 7 TO

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 39 PTS, 8 REB, 5 AST, 4 STL, 2 BLK, 12/20 FG, 6/10 3P
Gerald Henderson: 21 PTS, 9/16 FG

Game 3 - #1 Boston Celtics at #2 Los Angeles Lakers (Series tied 1-1)

In the first Finals game in Los Angeles in a decade, the Lakers started off strong, then were shockingly blown out by Boston the rest of the way. The Celtics outscored the Lakers 95-60 after the first quarter. Part of the Lakers’ struggle was that Magic Johnson struggled to stay on the court, first with foul trouble, then with a twisted ankle. Larry Bird was fantastic again with a 28-12-8. No matter what, if the Lakers are to win this series, they’ll need to win it Boston. The Celtics are back in the driver’s seat.

Celtics 120, LAKERS 89 (Celtics lead 2-1)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 28 PTS, 12 REB, 8 AST, 4 STL
Purvis Short: 25 PTS, 8/13 FG
Gus Williams: 22 PTS

Lakers Stats
Spencer Haywood: 10 PTS, 11 REB
Magic Johnson: 11 PTS, 4 AST
Bernard King: 18 PTS, 9 REB

Game 4 - #1 Boston Celtics at #2 Los Angeles Lakers (Celtics lead 2-1)

The Lakers held a small lead at halftime before points start raining all over the place. 91 total points were scored in the third, but it was Boston who won the quarter 49-42, then extended that advantage in the 4th to win a second straight road game. Both Bird and Magic were brilliant, but Gus and Purvis were just a bit better than LA’s supporting cast. Suddenly, it’s the Celtics that may win the series in LA. What was shaping up to be a classic series after Game 1 has suddenly looked like a one-way massacre. Game 5 is in LA.

Celtics 135, LAKERS 126 (Celtics lead 3-1)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 32 PTS, 10 REB, 11 AST, 13/25 FG, 4/7 3P
Gus Williams: 28 PTS, 4 AST, 5 REB, 9/10 FG, 9/10 FT
Purvis Short: 30 PTS, 4 REB, 6 AST, 4 STL, 8/15 FG, 14/16 FT

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 39 PTS, 12/14 FG, 14/17 FT, 7 REB, 6 AST, 2 STL
Jamaal Wilkes: 18 PTS, 4 REB, 2 AST, 4 STL, 7/12 FG
Bernard King: 23 PTS, 4 REB, 9 AST

Game 5 - #1 Boston Celtics at #2 Los Angeles Lakers (Celtics lead 3-1)

It was a close game through three, but once again the Celtics proved to be the better team down the stretch, pulling away with a 10-point 4th quarter advantage to secure the franchise’s 14th NBA Championship. After two straight failures in the NBA Finals, Larry Bird was absolutely fantastic in Game 5 and the series. He recorded a 2nd straight triple-double to win the title, finishing the Finals with 32.4-10.4-9.4 averages. He locked down the Finals MVP award with this performance.

After a promising Game 1 the Lakers were shocked to lose in the manner they did. Losing three straight games in Los Angeles was a surprise to everyone, even as it seemed clear Boston would win the series. Still, this has to be viewed as a step up for LA as they made the Finals for the first time in a decade, and are also the favorites for the #1 pick in this off-season’s rookie draft with Ralph Sampson waiting.

Celtics 124, LAKERS 109 (Celtics win 4-1)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 33 PTS, 13 REB, 14 AST, 13/25 FG
Gus Williams: 27 PTS

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 12 PTS, 6 REB, 11 AST, 8 TO
Bernard King: 19 PTS, 6 REB, 9/15 FG
Alvan Adams: 19 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST

Prediction Contest – RESULTS

1st Round –
Picking the Winning Team is worth 10 Points, Picking the Exact Amount of Games is worth 2 Points

Results

Newcomer AlanSmithee1981 has an early lead, predicting three series correctly (although missed all the exact game guesses…first round is only best of five!) for 30 points. Dubb hit two on the head exactly for 24 points.

Semi-Finals – Picking the Winning Team is worth 25 Points, Picking the Exact Amount of Games is worth 5 Points

Results

Both Alansmithee1981 and Dubble J put on strong showings, with the Sixers-Pacers series being the difference . Dubb nearly perfected the round, getting each series correct and getting the Lakers and Pacers series to the game. This gave Dubb 110 points for the round and 134 points total. Alansmithee was strong in hitting 3/4 series but none to the game, still good for 75 points on the round and 105 total. No one else has predicted, but with the point values getting higher and higher anyone can join in and contend.

Conference Finals – Picking the Winning is worth 50 Points, Picking the Exact Amount of Games is worth 10 Points

Results

Alansmithee and Dubb go chalk in the Conference Finals as each got the Lakers and Celtics correct, and each nailed one of the series going to six games, scoring 110 each. That makes it 244 to 215 with just the NBA Finals left.

NBA Finals – Picking the Winning Team is Worth 100 Points, Picking the Exact Amount of Games is worth 20 Points

Guessing the Finals MVP: Worth 20 Points

Results

@AlanSmithee1981 and @Dubble J both missed the Finals pick, thus Dubble J officially wins the 1983 predictions title. With the 10%, that’ll give him 269 points. Alansmithee finishes with a strong debut of 215 points.

Winning the Competition Each Year: Worth +10%

The goal for prediction results: when we get into the late 2020s and 2030s, to allow users to create their own rookies based on the prediction points they built up.

All box scores are updated, as is the 1st page Almanac (although I may add some records in the near future).

As always, we'll take a small break, then get into the 1983 off-season!

1983 NBA Off-Season

Big changes have come to the NBA as the money continues to roll in. The salary cap has boomed to $4,500,000 (and booms again to $6,000,000 next year) until starting to flatten out (but still increasing). Three markets had major changes. The Kings have moved to Sacramento, adding a team to the Pacific Division. Replacing them in the Midwest are the Spirits of St. Louis. While not sharing the history of the short-lived ABA team, the city of St. Louis is excited to have basketball again. Also joining the NBA via expansion are the new New Orleans Jazz. New Orleans lost their team to Salt Lake a few years ago. New Orleans will slot into the Central. We have another three full season before Orlando and Minneapolis join the league to even things out at 28 teams. There is also news that the San Diego Clippers will be moving closer to Los Angeles…more details to come.

The biggest change will be to the playoff system. Now, the top 8 seeds from each conference will make the playoffs, with the #1 seed facing #8, #2 against #7 etc. The first round series remains out of five games.

A few notable retirements. New York legend Walt “Clyde” Frazier formally retired. Frazier had been riding the bench for the Lakers this past season, hoping to snag a last ring. Three-time NBA Champion Paul Silas called it a career. Former All-Star Calvin Murphy also retired from Denver after a long career with the Rockets.

There were some coaching moves for the ’83 season. Dick Motta has returned to the NBA to run the expansion Jazz, while Donnie Walsh takes up St. Louis. Hubie Brown is gone from the Hawks after a disappointing season, replaced by Phil Johnson. Surprisngly, Del Harris stepped down after a very successful run for the Rockets that included the 1981 NBA Championship. Jim Lynam takes over. Gene Shue is gone from the Bullets, replaced by Mike Fratello. Newcomer George Karl takes over the Warriors from Al Attles.

The NBA Draft Lottery was next. This draft lottery has been talked about all year because the top prize, 7’4” Ralph Sampson, will likely change the NBA wherever he goes. If the Los Angeles Lakers, holders of pick with the best odds at #1 from the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar trade with Washington, land Sampson, experts predict a decade of championships from the years to come. Dallas is also in excellent shape with two top picks (#2 from the Calvin Murphy trade and #4 from the Swen Nater trade) themselves. Miami gets a chance to finally get on the map if they can convert third-best odds into #1. Of course the Suns and Trail Blazers would speed up their rebuilding process, while the Clippers would have to make some decisions about Joey Barry Carroll. The Spirits and Jazz are locked into #4 and #5, so teams falling from the top three will fall far. Here is the original Lotto Order:

Draft Lotto

#1 Lakers (from Bullets)
#2 Mavericks (from Nuggets)
#3 Heat
#4 Mavericks (from Kings)
#5 Suns
#6 Clippers
#7 Trail Blazers
#8 Nets
#9 Hawks
#10 Pistons
#11 Pistons (from Warriors)
#12 Heat (from Cavaliers

Spirits and Jazz will take #4 and #5 picks regardless

And here is how the Lottery played out:

#14 – Heat (From Cavaliers) (-2)
#13 – Pistons (from Warriors) (-2)
#12 – Pistons (-2)
#11 – Hawks (-2)
#10 – Clippers (-4)

The first big surprise is really two surprises, as BOTH the Nets and Trail Blazers found themselves in the top 3!

#9 – Suns (-4)
#8 – Mavericks (From Kings) (-4)
#7 – Heat (-4)
#6 – Lakers (from Bullets) (-5)

Once again, the Mavericks have a chance to pick #1 in the draft. They’ve done so the past two seasons, which has led to Isiah Thomas and James Worthy. Rough luck continues for Dallas’ expansion classmate Miami, and the Lakers pretty much get their worst case scenario with the #6 selection.

#5 – Jazz
#4 – Spirits

The Spirits win the coin-toss against the Jazz.

The first card is revealed…showing the Nets with the #3 selection. Not the #1 they were suddenly hoping for, but still a great day for them.

#3 – Nets

The next card is revealed…and it is that of the Trail Blazers!

#2 – Trail Blazers

Which means the remaining card, for the third straight year, is that of the Dallas Mavericks! To say that this draft will likely make the young Mavericks a powerhouse is an understatement!

#1 – Mavericks (From Nuggets)

Draft Order
#1 Mavericks (from Nuggets) +1
#2 Trail Blazers +5
#3 Nets +5
#4 Spirits
#5 Jazz
#6 Lakers -5
#7 Heat -4
#8 Mavericks (from Kings) -4
#9 Suns -4
#10 Clippers -4
#11 Hawks -2
#12 Pistons -2
#13 Pistons (from Warriors) -2
#14 Heat (from Cavs) -2
#15 Mavericks
#16 Trail Blazers (from Seattle)
#17 Atlanta (from Stallions)
#18 Bulls
#19 Knicks
#20 Suns (from Bucks)
#21 Spurs
#22 Kings (from Pacers)
#23 76ers
#24 Lakers
#25 Rockets
#26 Celtics

NBADraftlogo-e1665026029600.png

#1 – Mavericks – Ralph Sampson
#2 – Trail Blazers – Byron Scott

Unlike last year, there was no question who Dallas is taking. The Mavericks, who’s main weakness was the center position, takes perhaps the greatest draft prospect since Wilt Chamberlain in Ralph Sampson. Portland takes Scott, a strong scorer, with the #2 pick. The Nets though steal Dallas’ thunder with a monster trade that shakes up the NBA. The Nets trade #3, LaSalle Thompson, Jay Vincent, Darrell Griffth and their 1984 1st Round Selection to Houston for Three-Time MVP Moses Malone! That is quite the haul for Malone, as Griffith was the #1 overall pick in 1980, and Thompson was a top 10 pick last year. The Rockets then select a center, as it looks like after the loss in the Semis a new era is emerging.

#3 – Rockets – Steve Stipanovich
#4 Spirits – Dale Ellis
#5 – Jazz – Jeff Malone
#6 – Lakers – Rodney McCray
#7 – Heat – Derek Harper

The Spirits and Jazz take scorers that could get their franchises going. Some expected the Lakers and Heat to trade out of their spot, but LA keeps their pick and takes all-arounder McCray as the Heat look to build their franchise around Harper.

#8 – Mavericks – Thurl Bailey
#9 – Suns – Clyde Drexler
#10 – Clippers – Doc Rivers

Dallas plays it safe and drafts another center, while the Suns and Clippers also pick up guards that could potentially get their franchises going.

#11 – Hawks – John Paxson
#12 – Pistons – Darrell Walker
#13 – Pistons – Randy Breuer
#14 – Heat – Sidney Green
#15 – Mavericks – Mark West
#16 – Trail Blazers – Ennis Whatley
#17 – Hawks – Jon Sundvold
#18 – Bulls – Craig Ehlo
#19 – Knicks – Antoine Carr
#20 – Suns – Mitchell Wiggins
#21 – Spurs – Roy Hinson
#22 – Kings – Greg Kite
#23 – 76ers – Leo Rautins
#24 – Lakers – Manute Bol

Lakers take a chance with the 7’7” unknown Bol. Houston further shakes things up with another monster trade, this time sending this selection and Dennis Johnson to Detroit for Ricky Pierce, Danny Ainge and Detroit’s 1984 and 1985 1st Round Picks. The rebuild in Houston has started while Detroit looks to make a splash in what looks to be a stacked Eastern Conference. Detroit would actually trade this selection to Sacramento for Danny Schayes.

#25 – Kings – Sedale Threatt
#26 – Celtics – Granville Waiters

Free Agency

There were some major shockers in Free Agency in 1983. The biggest being Sidney Moncrief spurning Milwaukee and joining the Nets on a long term deal. Along with the Nets being able to bring back Cliff Robinson and Calvin Natt, New Jersey now looks like a powerhouse in the already stacked Atlantic Division. Magic and Bird unsurprisingly scored eight-figure contracts. More power seemed to head East, with Jim Paxson headed to Cleveland and Bill Laimbeer to Atlanta. There were surprising landing places for legends too. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar returns to LA along with Bill Cartwright. Bill Walton heads to Washington. Wes Unseld gets to add some veteran leadership to the young Bulls while Elvin Hayes will score a bit off the bench for the Stallions. Here is a list of notable FA signings, with players joining a new team in italics.
