Game 1 - #6 Phoenix Suns at #1 Los Angeles Lakers
It was good while it lasted, but the Lakers ended the Suns undefeated playoff run. After a close first, the Lakers dominated the game and the Suns had no chance. Bernard King had 36 while Magic Johnson notched another triple-double (18-10-13). Those who thought the Suns may have all the momentum against the tired Lakers were proven wrong. Mike Woodson led Phoenix with 22.

Game 1 - #4 Boston Celtics at #3 Chicago Bulls
Larry Bird’s all-around game didn’t mean a thing as Dominique bulldozed Boston with 44 points to take Game 1 for Chicago. While Bird was fantastic (29-7-8), he or Short had no luck stopping Dominique. Celtics will need to find a way if they want to return to the Finals.

Game 2 - #6 Phoenix Suns at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 1-0)
Game 2 was more of the same of Game 1 as the Lakers were completely unstoppable. Magic went for a 21-9-14, Buck Williams and Bernard King added a combined 52 points, and even the bench got into it a bit. Clyde Drexler was better here with 26, but the Suns as a whole need to find some of what they had earlier in these playoffs or a sweep is inevitable.
LAKERS 137, Suns 113 (Lakers lead 2-0)
Suns Stats
Clyde Drexler: 26 PTS, 4 AST, 2 STL
Mike Woodson: 24 PTS
Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 29 PTS, 5 REB, 12/19 FG
Magic Johnson: 21 PTS, 9 REB, 14 AST
Buck Williams: 23 PTS, 12 REB, 11/14 FG

Game 2 - #4 Boston Celtics at #3 Chicago Bulls (Bulls lead 1-0)
Another game, another 44 for Dominique. This time the Celtics had some firepower to match, only Larry Bird struggled to find the basket (8/27 FG) and it cost them. The Bulls take a comfortable 2-0 lead into Boston, where the Celtics need to find something to get back into the series.
BULLS 123, Celtics 106 (Bulls lead 2-0)
Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 20 PTS, 7 REB, 13 AST, 5 STL
Gus Williams: 20 PTS, 5 REB, 4 AST

Dominique Wilkins: 44 PTS, 8 REB, 4 STL, 17/26 FG, 9/10 FT
Terry Cummings: 22 PTS, 13 REB
Johnny Moore: 15 PTS, 10 AST, 6/8 FG

Game 3 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #6 Phoenix Suns (Lakers lead 2-0)
It looks like the Suns just never had a chance. While the fight was somewhat close in the first half the Lakers pulled away with ease. For whatever reason Greg Ballard took 32 shots for Phoenix, only hitting 11. With Craig Hodges going 5/17 it was the Suns just weren’t going to get away with that against LA. King had a 28-7-7 and Magic ended up with a 19-9-9. The Lakers will look to finish off the sweep and get to their third straight NBA Finals.

Game 3 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #4 Boston Celtics (Bulls lead 2-0)
Another big game for ‘Nique, but this time the Celtics had something for Chicago as a whole. The Celtics scored 70 in the first half and while Chicago tried to hang on, they couldn’t make up the difference. The Boston Big 3 came up huge, with Purvis Short scoring 34, Bird with 26 (with 8 REB, 10 AST) and Gus had 25. No one was particularly bad for Chicago, but they’ll have to do just a bit better to take complete control in Game 4.
CELTICS 126, Bulls 112 (Bulls lead 2-1)
Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 36 PTS, 4 REB, 15/27 FG
Alvan Adams: 20 PTS, 6 REB, 10/15 FG

Game 4 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #6 Phoenix Suns (Lakers lead 3-0)
The Lakers just let this one get away. After a competitive first quarter the Lakers only managed 8 second quarter points…and basically decided they’ll wait till Game 5. Clyde led Phoenix with 22.
SUNS 117, Lakers 87 (Lakers lead 3-1)
Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 26 PTS, 4 REB, 13/22 FG
Buck Williams: 19 PTS, 9/12 FG

Game 4 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #4 Boston Celtics (Bulls lead 2-1)
Dominique continued to dominate, but the Celtics came storming back in the 4th quarter to take the lead on a Purvis Short lay-up with 1:56 left. 118-117 Celtics.
Boston does everything they can to keep the ball out of ‘Nique’s hands, and it works as Chicago settles for a Vinnie Johnson jumper that misses. Johnson makes up for this though by stripping Short. Johnson ends up having to take it himself and he’s fouled, with the lay-up just rimming out. Johnson only makes one, tying the game at 118 with 45 seconds left. Bird tries to get to the basket, but has to give it up to Short who misses a three straight away! 20 seconds left and ‘Nique has the ball. The clock ticks away and he takes the shot…AND HITS IT AS TIME EXPIRES! DOMINIQUE WON THE GAME! Boston Garden is stunned.
Bulls 120, CELTICS 118 (Bulls lead 3-1)
Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 43 PTS, 6 REB, 4 STL
Vinnie Johnson: 21 PTS, 5 REB, 4 AST, 4 STL, 8/14 FG, 2/3 3P
Celtics Stats
Gus Williams: 32 PTS, 15/25 FG

Cedric Maxwell: 16 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST

Game 5 - #6 Phoenix Suns at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 3-1)
The Lakers finished off the Suns in Game 5. Bernard King went for 41 and again the Suns just couldn’t do anything about it. The Suns should be proud of the season they’ve had, as they’ve positioned themselves as a contender in the West. They have an outside shot at the lottery too. The Lakers will have their hands full in the Finals regardless of their opponent. They await the Bulls-Celtics winner.
LAKERS 113, Suns 98 (Lakers win 4-1)
Suns Stats
Clyde Drexler: 22 PTS, 5 REB
Greg Ballard: 21 PTS, 11 REB, 2 STL

Game 5 - #4 Boston Celtics at #3 Chicago Bulls (Bulls lead 3-1)
Chicago came to win and celebrate, but instead they’ll have to pack their bags and head back to Boston. Dominique Wilkins was incredible again with 45 points, but Larry Bird played like the champion and two-time MVP he is with a 37-11-12 as he saved Boston’s season in Game 5. Boston will need to win at home to send this series to a deciding Game 7.
Celtics 135, BULLS 128 (Bulls lead 3-2)
Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 37 PTS, 11 REB, 12 AST, 3 STL, 14/24 FG
Gus Williams: 24 PTS, 10 AST
Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 44 PTS, 8 REB, 4 STL, 17/26 FG, 9/10 FT
Terry Cummings: 22 PTS, 13 REB
Johnny Moore: 15 PTS, 10 AST, 6/8 FG

Game 6 - #3 Chicago Bulls at #4 Boston Celtics (Bulls lead 3-2)
This was the definition of ‘let the guy get his points and shut down everyone else”. Dominique Wilkins went off for 50, but again it wasn’t enough as only Terry Cummings hit double digits to help him. Bird and Short had 35 each (Bird with a 35-16-9) and just like that the series goes to a Game 7.
CELTICS 120, Bulls 105 (Series tied 3-3)
Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 50 PTS, 10 REB, 2 BLK
Terry Cummings: 16 PTS, 7 REB
Johnny Moore: 14 AST
Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 35 PTS, 16 REB, 9 AST, 2 STL, 2 BLK, 11/16 FG
Purvis Short: 35 PTS, 8 REB
Gus Williams: 16 PTS, 12 AST

Game 7 - #4 Boston Celtics at #3 Chicago Bulls (Series tied 3-3)
It took 7 games, but the worst possible scenario happened for the Celtics: the Bulls figured out how to win without ‘Nique having a monster game. ‘Nique took out a page from Bird’s book with a 24-14-9 and Terry Cummings led the way for Chicago as the Bulls finished off the Celtics in Game 7 to clinch a berth in the NBA Finals. Bird was great with a 34-11-7, but his defense will be questioned as ‘Nique had his way with him for the second year in a row in a seven game series. The Bulls head to their first NBA Finals as Boston falls short for the second straight season.
BULLS 120, Celtics 111 (Bulls win 4-3)
Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 34 PTS, 11 REB, 7 AST, 13/25 FG
Cedric Maxwell: 22 PTS
Gus Williams: 11 PTS, 8 AST, 5 STL
Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 24 PTS, 14 REB, 9 AST, 9/17 FG, 6/6 FT
Terry Cummings: 25 PTS, 5 REB, 11/15 FG
Alvan Adams: 22 PTS, 9 REB

NBA FINALS Preview
Best of Seven (2-3-2)
#3 Chicago Bulls (60-22) vs. #1 Los Angeles Lakers (64-18)
Season Results
12/17 – BULLS 125, Lakers 118

Series Preview
The 1985 NBA Finals are full of storylines. The top two scorers in the league: Chicago’s Dominique Wilkins (36.9) and LA’s Bernard King (32.8) will go at one another. Two young, tough power forwards in Terry Cummings and Buck Williams will collide in the paint. The biggest question for Chicago will be how Johnny Moore and company handle MVP Magic Johnson. The Nulls may have to give up some playmaking and have Andre Wakefield and Craig Ehlo harass Magic all series, but even that may not matter. But if someone can help ‘Nique put up points, the Bulls definitely have a chance this series. Also interesting is the Head Coach battle, as it was Pat Riley who replaced Paul Westhead in Los Angeles. Now Westhead has Chicago in the Finals.
