1983-1984 Season Preview

1983-1984 Team Information

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

Boston Celtics

1983 Record: 62-20 (1st in Atlantic, Won NBA Title)
Head Coach: K.C. Jones (3rd Year)
Key Players: Larry Bird (31.9 PPG, 11 RPG, 7.8 APG, 2 SPG, 49.6% FG, 94.4% FT, 46.2% 3P, MVP, Finals MVP), Purvis Short (15.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 50.3% FG), Gus Williams (16.5 PPG, 4.4 APG, 2.6 SPG, DPOTY)

Third time was a charm for the Celtics last season. They’ll be bringing back the main trio of Larry Bird, Gus Williams and Purvis Short. They’ll need Bird to be just as good as last year as a lot of talent came to the Eastern Conference, specifically to division rival New Jersey.

Miami Heat
1983 Record: 23-59 (5th in Atlantic)
Head Coach: Chuck Daly (4th Year)
Key Players: Derek Harper (#7 overall Draft pick), Clark Kellogg (18.7 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.2 SPG), Bill Garnett (9.7 PPG, 6.3 RPG)

The Heat once again failed to make a notable off-season move other than drafting Derek Harper. The next draft is the one to nail though, so perhaps this will be the last season of suffering for the Heat.

New Jersey Nets
1983 Record: 33-49 (4th in Atlantic)
Head Coach: Phil Jackson (2nd Year)
Key Players: Moses Malone (23.3 PPG, 15.4 RPG, 1.6 BPG, 55.6% FG), Cliff Robinson (16.5 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 1.2 SPG), Calvin Natt (17.3 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 49.2% FG), Sidney Moncrief (19.8 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 4.5 APG, 2.1 SPG)

The Nets had a monster off-season. First, they won one of the top three spots in the NBA Draft and converted that into Moses Malone, then signed Sidney Moncrief. Suddenly, the Nets look like favorite to end the Celtic reign in the East.

New York Knicks
1983 Record: 50-32 (3rd in Atlantic, Lost in Round 1 to Bucks)
Head Coach: Jerry Sloan (2nd Year)
Key Players: David Thompson (33.3 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 3.1 APG, 52.8% FG), Micheal Ray Richardson (19.6 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 11 APG, 2.7 SPG), Tree Rollins (7.4 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 2.9 BPG)

The Knicks returned to the playoffs last season under Coach Sloan, but blew a 2-0 lead against the Bucks. The Knicks bring back mostly the same team, although without Bill Walton they’ll be starting a monster defensive unit in 2nd year man Mark Eaton and Tree Rollins to go with arguably the most dynamic backcourt in the league in Micheal Ray and Skywalker.

Philadelphia 76ers
1983 Record: 53-29 (2nd in Atlantic, Lost to Pacers in Semi-Finals)
Head Coach: Billy Cunningham (6th Year)
Key Players: Julius Erving (22.1 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 3.1 APG, 1.7 SPG, 48% FG), Robert Parish (19.7 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 2.5 BPG, 49.4% FG), Bobby Jones (14.4 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 1.7 SPG, 1.6 BPG), Maurice Cheeks (13.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 8.3 APG, 2.6 SPG)

The Sixers continued to be a contender in 1983, but it is noticeable that age is slowly creeping up on them. Still, they were one game away from the Conference Finals and they have the experience to beat anyone. But the clock is ticking, Dr. J will turn 34 before the end of the season.

Washington Bullets
1983 Record: 21-61 (6th in Atlantic)
Head Coach: Mike Fratello (1st Year)
Key Players: Eddie Johnson (15.7 PPG, 5.5 RPG), World B. Free (20 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 5.2 APG, 1.4 SPG), Bill Walton (7.5 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 1.6 BPG)

The Bullets are in a transition. Not much is expected, but Free and Johnson should make them a little better than last season.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Atlanta Hawks

1983 Record: 34-48 (6th in Central)
Head Coach: Phil Johnson (1st Year)
Key Players: Bill Laimbeer (12.6 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 1.5 BPG), John Drew (15.4 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 48.4% FG), Eddie Johnson (16 PPG, 4.6 APG, 1.4 SPG)

After bottoming out, the Hawks come back with a new look. Their big signing is NBA Champion big man Bill Laimbeer. They’ll likely struggle as most of the East got stronger, but we’ll see.

Chicago Bulls
1983 Record: 48-34 (3rd in Central, Lost in Round 1 to Sixers)
Head Coach: Paul Westhead (2nd Year)
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (25.7 PPG, 7 RPG, 1.5 SPG, 53.4% FG, 83.3% FT, 38.1% 3P, ROTY), Terry Cummings (21.1 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 1 SPG), Alvan Adams (15.3 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 54.3% FG), Vinnie Johnson (15.5 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 3.9 APG, 1.7 SPG)

In part due to the big rookie seasons from Dominique Wilkins and Terry Cummings, the Bulls are all-in in 1983. The Bulls signed Alvan Adams from the Lakers and added veterans like Wes Unseld to the bench. Could be a huge year from Chicago.

Cleveland Cavaliers
1983 Record: 43-39 (4th in Central)
Head Coach: Stan Albeck (5th Year)
Key Players: Kevin McHale (22.6 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 2.3 BPG, 55.6% FG, 81.3% FT), Rolando Blackman (21.6 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3 APG), Jim Paxson (17.2 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 4.4 APG, 2.1 SPG)

Big strides from Kevin McHale and Rolando Blackman led to a +.500 season for the Cavaliers, but they just missed the playoffs. Adding Paxson should help the Cavs get over the hump.

Detroit Pistons
1983 Record: 38-44 (5th in Central)
Head Coach: Mike Schuler (3rdYear)
Key Players: Tom Chambers (20.9 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 47.2% FG, 81% FT), Dennis Johnson (22.5 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 4.2 APG, 1.8 SPG, 47% FG)

Detroit made their own win now move, moving Ricky Pierce for Dennis Johnson. Is that enough to get Detroit into the playoffs? Fat Lever will need to make a big jump, and Tom Chambers will need to continue his excellent play.

Indiana Pacers
1983 Record: 52-30 (1st in Central, Lost to Celtics in Eastern Conference Finals)
Head Coach: Don Nelson (3rd Year)
Key Players: Alex English (28.1 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 3.5 APG, 1.1 SPG, 1.1 BPG, 47.4% FG, 86.6% FT), Michael Cooper (13.3 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 4.4 APG, 2.3 SPG, 47.7% FG, 85.4% FT, 41.7% 3P), Otis Birdsong (22.9 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 3.5 APG, 2.3 SPG)

Alex English led a rebuilt Pacers team to within two games of the NBA Finals. With a full season with Otis Birdsong coming, that may be enough chemistry to get Indiana to the Finals.

Milwaukee Bucks
1983 Record: 50-32 (2nd in Central, Lost to Celtics in Semi-Finals)
Head Coach: Bill Musselman (4th Year)
Key Players: Marques Johnson (17.7 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 1 SPG), Walter Davis (18.5 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 4.7 APG, 1.8 SPG, 47.2% FG, 89% FT)

The biggest question for the Bucks: can they overcome the loss of Sidney Moncrief to the Nets? What looked like an emerging Eastern Conference contender now has a lot of questions.

New Orleans Jazz
1983 Record: Expansion
Head Coach: Dick Motta (1st Year)
Key Players: Ron Brewer (14.3 PPG, 47.2% FG, 80.1% FT), Jeff Malone (#5 Overall Pick), Ben Poquette (7.8 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 3.1 BPG)

The Jazz return to the NBA. Scorers Brewer and rookie Jeff Malone may keep them in some games, but there’s a lot of work to be done.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Dallas Mavericks

1983 Record: 42-40 (4th in Midwest, Lost to Spurs in Round 1)
Head Coach: Frank Layden (4th Year)
Key Players: Isiah Thomas (21.6 PPG, 9.2 APG, 1.9 SPG, 46.7% FG), Kiki Vandeweghe (29.4 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 51.5% FG, 88.9% FT, 37.3% 3P), James Worthy (20.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 52.4% FG), Ralph Sampson (#1 Overall Pick)

The Mavericks may be the future of the NBA. Coming off a playoff appearance led by youngsters Isiah, Worthy and Kiki…they now add one of the most anticipated rookies in NBA history in Ralph Sampson. If Sampson picks things up quickly, the Mavericks may be the NBA Finals favorite from the West.

Denver Nuggets
1983 Record: 21-61 (6th in Midwest)
Head Coach: Jack McKinney (2nd Year)
Key Players: Bob McAdoo (14.6 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 1.2 BPG), Andrew Toney (22.3 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 2.6 APG), Sleepy Floyd (15.1 PPG)

The Nuggets tried to stay afloat by obtaining Andrew Toney, but bottomed out and didn’t have their draft pick while doing so. The Nuggets need to find some wins as they don’t own their 1984 or 1985 1st round picks either.

Houston Rockets
1983 Record: 57-25 (1st in Midwest, Lost to Lakers in Western Conference Finals)
Head Coach: Jim Lynam (1st Year)
Key Players: Darrell Griffith (19.4 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 1 SPG), Ricky Pierce (17.6 PPG, 3.7 RPG), LaSalle Thompson (7.4 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 1.1 BPG), Steve Stipanovich (#3 Overall Pick)

Struggling to score with Moses’ contract coming up, the Rockets took last season’s Conference Finals loss to the Lakers as a sign to start things over. The Rockets now look towards the future, led by scorer Darrell Griffith and young bigs LaSalle Thompson and rookie Steve Stipanovich.

Salt Lake Stallions
1983 Record: 46-36 (3rd in Midwest, Lost in Round 1 to Sonics)
Head Coach: John MacLeod (2nd Year)
Key Players: Reggie Theus (18.7 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 5.2 APG, 1.4 SPG, 51.1% FG, 84.6% FT), Adrian Dantley (26.5 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 51.7% FG, 83.4% FT), Dan Roundfield (19.3 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 1.5 BPG, 54.1% FG)

The Stallions gamble of putting together Roundfield, Theus and Dantley paid off as they returned to the playoffs. They weren’t able to add anything, but Dave Corzine being healthy in conjunction with their three scorers might be enough to make progress.

San Antonio Spurs
1983 Record: 51-31 (2nd In Midwest, Lost to Lakers in Semi-Finals)
Head Coach: Doug Moe (8th Year)
Key Players: George Gervin (28.8 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 51.3% FG, 83.7% FT), John Lucas (12.8 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 7.1 APG, 2.2 SPG), James Silas (14.8 PPG)

A late-season decline led to the Spurs loss to the Lakers in the playoffs. The Spurs took some hits, losing Bill Laimbeer to Atlanta. With Campy Russell, James Silas and John Lucas looking for new contracts this off-season, this may be the last chance for this Spurs team to add another championship banner.

Spirits of St. Louis
1983 Record: Expansion
Head Coach: Donnie Walsh (1st Year)
Key Players: Artis Gilmore (7.2 PPG, 5 RPG, 1.4 BPG), Mike Mitchell (9.6 PPG, 4.4 RPG), Dale Ellis (#4 Overall Pick)

The Spirits have a lot of interesting pieces, but they’re unlikely to really do much as an expansion. But there are some players who may have been held back by playing time, so we’ll see what happens. Dale Ellis will definitely be relied on.

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Golden State Warriors

1983 Record: 39-43
Head Coach: George Karl (1st Year)
Key Players: Darryl Dawkins (16.2 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.6 BPG, 49.6% FG), Al Wood (13.6 PPG, 50.1% FG)

Changes seem to be coming for the Warriors. Darryl Dawkins, who has been solid for the Warriors over the past three seasons, hasn’t quite blossomed into a top tier center and the Warriors have treaded water since. The Warriors will look different with long-time Warriors Coach Al Attles out.

Los Angeles Lakers
1983 Record: 56-26 (1st in Pacific, Lost to Celtics in NBA Finals)
Head Coach: Pat Riley (3rd)
Key Players: Magic Johnson (24.9 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 10.4 APG, 1.5 SPG, 59.3% FG, 84.3% FT), Jamaal Wilkes (19.3 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 1.6 SPG), Bernard King (48 G, 23.3 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 56.6% FG), Buck Williams (18.8 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.1 BPG, 61.7% FG)

The Lakers had high hopes to put Ralph Sampson in that center position. Instead they lost Alvan Adams to Chicago, but brought back Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and brought in Bill Cartwright for an interesting center combo. Really the Lakers just need to stay healthy as that’s been their biggest challenge the past few seasons. They are the Western Conference favorites until further notice.

Phoenix Suns
1983 Record: 28-54 (6th in Pacific)
Head Coach: Larry Brown (2nd Year)
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (#9 overall Pick)

The Suns are still in their rebuilt. We will see if Clyde Drexler can be that guy long term. A legitimate contender at the worst record in basketball otherwise, but that may lead to pairing Drexler with someone exciting.

Portland Trail Blazers
1983 Record: 33-49 (4th in Pacific)
Head Coach: Dr. Jack Ramsay (8th Year)
Key Players: Kelly Tripucka (22.6 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 1.2 SPG), Byron Scott (#2 Overall Pick)

The Trail Blazers are kicking off a rebuild, although Tripucka and Byron Scott may score enough to keep them in games.

Sacramento Kings
1983 Record: 28-54 (5th in Midwest)
Head Coach: Cotton Fitzsimmons (6th Year)
Key Players: Brad Davis (14.8 PPG, 5.9 APG, 1.2 SPG), Johnny Davis (17.2 PPG, 6 APG, 1.2 SPG)

The Kings moved on from Otis Birdsong last season and brought in the Davises. With the West weakening, they may be able to score a playoff spot in their first season in Sacramento.

San Diego Clippers
1983 Record: 32-50 (5th in Pacific)
Head Coach: Scotty Robertson (4th Year)
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (19.5 PPG, 9 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 52.3% FG), Larry Nance (18.3 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.6 BPG, 55.9% FG), Trent Tucker (15.4 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 40.9% 3P%), Doc Rivers (#10 Overall Pick)

On paper, JBC, Tucker, Nance and Rivers might surprise people. It’s a contract year for Carroll as well, but he’s the oldest of this foursome at 25.

Seattle Supersonics
1983 Record: 44-38 (2nd in Pacific, Lost to Rockets in Semi-Finals)
Head Coach: Lenny Wilkens (10th Year)
Key Players: Jack Sikma (19.5 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 1.4 BPG), Maurice Lucas (17.4 PPG, 10.1 RPG), Mark Aguirre (18 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 47.6% FG), Terry Furlow (13.6 PPG, 1.4 SPG)

The Sonics were one game away from taking down the Rockets and making the Western Conference Finals. They were able to retain Maurice Lucas, from their trade with Portland, but they lost Paxson. Still, Terry Furlow may be able to make up for the loss.

EARLY NBA SEASON RECAP

The 1984 NBA Title is wide open.

With so many players coming into their own, the 83-84 season is full of contenders. As expected the Eastern Conference has been ultra-competitive, with seven teams sporting a winning % of .633 or better. With eight teams making the playoffs in each Conference, it already looks like the East’s eight teams are set. Then again, it is still early. While the Celtics, Knicks and Sixers battle for the Atlantic, it is the newly built Nets that hold onto the Atlantic crown at the moment. But surprisingly, the Cleveland Cavaliers have the #1 seed thanks to a big start from Kevin McHale and Rolando Blackman. The West has some surprises as well. While the Lakers pace the league and the young Mavericks live up to their potential, some new teams have entered the fray. The Warriors may finally have it together as they are off to a 19-8 start, and the Clippers have started strong as well. It’s a different NBA than even last year.

All of the Eastern Conference contenders, sans the Nets, have been years in the making. Bird again is playing elite basketball for Boston. The Knicks stand behind a monster defensive front court of Tree Rollins and Mark Eaton with the dynamic David Thompson and Micheal Ray Richardson. Philadelphia hasn’t started as strong as before, but Robert Parish, Mo Cheeks and Dr. J are still on the good side of .500. In the Central the Cavs are led by Kevin McHale and Rolando Blackman, who’ve spent years building chemistry. Chicago is right behind them with ‘Nique and Cummings, while Detroit finally looks to be making the leap with Tom Chambers and DJ. Indiana just sits 3 games out from first, with Alex English scoring out of his mind (37.5 PPG). There are only five teams above .500 in the West. The Lakers once again are led by the magnificent play of Magic Johnson, while Dallas has integrated Ralph Sampson beautifully. The Stallions rely on Adrian Dantley and Reggie Theus once again. The Warriors are getting a huge season out of Darryl Dawkins and the Clippers were getting one out of Joe Barry Carroll before his injury as well. Some of the teams that contended in prior years are struggling though, as the Spurs can’t seem to keep pace and the new look Rockets aren’t a contender at all. It is only Christmas though.

ROOKIE REPORT

While most of the attention has been on Ralph Sampson, who has played really well so far for the Mavericks (18 PPG, 7.7 RPG), Dale Ellis may be the Rookie of the Year so far. The Spirits’ hopeful franchise player is scoring 22.3 PPG and actually has the Spirits winning some games. Clyde Drexler (Suns), Jeff Malone (Jazz), Doc Rivers (Clippers), Derek Harper (Heat) and Steve Stipanovich (Rockets) are all scoring in double-digits. Rivers leads all rookies in assists, while Sampson leads in rebounds.

NOTABLE GAMES SO FAR

11/22/83 – CLIPPERS 116, Spirits 115 (OT) – Dale Ellis and the Spirits nearly take their first victory, but Joe Barry Carroll’s 27 is a bit too much. Ellis had 40

11/24/83 – Cavaliers 95, BUCKS 84 – Kevin McHale’s triple-double, a 25-15 with 10 blocks, destroys the Bucks

11/26 – Spirits 106, LAKERS 101 – The Spirits shockingly find their first victory as a franchise over the powerful Lakers, with rookie Dale Ellis dropping 40

12/2 – Lakers 148, MAVERICKS 137 – A wild battle between Western Conference contenders showed off the best the NBA has to offer. Magic put up 19-12-19, besting Isiah’s 16-15, while Bernard’s 39 edges Worthy’s 37

12/5 – Knicks 114, KINGS 93 – Micheal Ray distributes 20 assists in a road win against the Kings

12/8 – Mavericks 142, NUGGETS 124 – Isiah scores 44, outdueling Andrew Toney’s 39

12/15 – KNICKS 112, Lakers 107 (OT) – Skywalker scored 35, and Micheal Ray drops a 25-10-14 on Magic as the Knicks take down the Lakers at MSG

12/16 – Mavericks 129, NETS 115 – Kiki’s 31 and Sampson’s 25 is enough to overcome Moses’s 36-17

12/17 – Bullets 111, PACERS 102 – English drops 53, but Indiana still gets shocked by the Bullets, led by Eddie Johnson’s 24 and Walton’s throwback 20 boards

12/18 – LAKERS 128, Spurs 106 – Magic drops a 22-9-21 as the Lakers roll over the rival Spurs

12/19 – CELTICS 125, Nets 114 – Larry Bird reminds the Nets who runs the Atlantic with a 46-13-9 in a huge division victory

As the regular season is broken into three parts, we’ll look at ten upcoming players, with the intent that these are the top 25 prospects, that will be a part of the 1984 Rookie Draft Class. Age is listed as time of the draft.

Charles Barkley, PF, 6’6”, 252, Auburn, 21 – The loud-spoken Barkley perhaps has the widest spectrum of who he’ll be for his NBA career. Despite his height he is a relentless rebounder and can often get to the basket at will. That lack of size does hurt him defensively though. Still, could go as high as #2 in this draft.

Sam Bowie, C, 7’1”, 229, Kentucky, 23 – Arguably the most polished prospect in the draft, although he doesn’t have the potential Olajuwon has. Still, he could go as high as #2 as it is very unlikely anyone will take him over Olajuwon and should be a very good pro. Has had major injury concerns.

Lancaster Gordon, SG, 6’3”, 195, Louisville, 21 – The MVP of the NCAA Mideast Regional, Gordon may be a top 10 pick based on potential alone

Michael Jordan, SG, 6’6”, 195, North Carolina, 21 – The only player who may seriously considered to go #1 that isn’t Hakeem is this guy right here. There are some questions about his potential being under Dean Smith at North Carolina, but many who have seen him play believe he might be the second coming of Dr. J, if not better.

Hakeem Olajuwon, C, 7’0”, 250, Houston, 21 – As great a prospect that Sampson was, Hakeem may be the more complete prospect. Post-game, footwork, defensive potential are all elite, second to perhaps Georgetown’s Patrick Ewing, who will likely be the #1 pick in the 1985 draft. Hakeem would be #1 in almost any other draft, and may be in this one, but that will depend if the #1 pick needs a center. Guaranteed to be a top-two selection. (Note – I am aware in real life he was Akeem at this point, but because I’ll make the typo over and over, I’ll start him as Hakeem here).

Sam Perkins, C, 6’9”, 232, North Carolina, 21 – Jordan’s UNC teammate has a unique skillset for a big man, as he’s able to stretch the floor with three point range. Despite being a bit undersized can rebound as well. Will likely be a top 10 pick.

Alvin Robertson, SG, 6’4”, 180, Arkansas, 21 – Robertson is a unique all-around guard with top defensive ability. Probably a top 10 pick.

Otis Thorpe, PF, 6’10”, 224, Providence, 21 – While not as highly regarded as some of the other bigs in this draft, Thorpe does have potential as a 20-10 guy and is likely a #6-#10 selection.

Mel Turpin, C, 6’11”, 240, Kentucky, 24 – Big Mel Turpin is a solid rebounder and shot blocker, and could possibly plug in the middle for some teams. Should be a lotto pick.

Leon Wood, PG, 6’3”, 185, Cal State-Fullerton, 22 – A All-American who probably has less potential than Gordon or Robertson, but should grade out as a solid pro.

***

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

New Jersey Nets (2)

1983 Record: 20-7
Key Players: Moses Malone (21.2 PPG, 13 RPG, 1.3 BPG, 48.1% FG), Sidney Moncrief (22.3 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 4.9 APG, 2.7 SPG, 50.3% FG), Calvin Natt (18.3 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 54.2% FG), Cliff Robinson (16.6 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 1 SPG, 1.3 BPG)
Big Moves: None

Moses and Moncrief coming to New Jersey may have tilted the balance of the NBA firmly in the East. The Nets do not look like a joke so far.

New York Knicks (3)
1983 Record: 18-7
Key Players: David Thompson (27.6 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 3 APG, 51% FG), Micheal Ray Richardson (17.8 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 11.8 APG, 2.2 SPG), Mark Eaton (7.4 RPG, 3.6 BPG), Tree Rollins (8.4 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 2.3 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The Knicks strategy of bullying people inside and scoring off the wing has worked perfectly so far, as the Knicks are just two wins in the win column from the Atlantic leading Nets. Plus they’ll need Eaton and Rollins in any showdown with Moses.

Boston Celtics (4)
1983 Record: 20-8
Key Players: Larry Bird (26.1 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 7.6 APG, 2.4 SPG, 51.8% FG, 89.6% FT, 38.4% 3P), Gus Williams (21.8 PPG, 5.8 APG, 2.1 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Celtics haven’t been quite the same as their Championship winning team last season, but Bird is still one of the best, if not the best, player in the world, and that’s been enough for the past three seasons.

Philadelphia 76ers (8)
1983 Record: 16-12
Key Players: Julius Erving (15.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.6 SPG), Robert Parish (22 PPG, 10 RPG, 1.3 SPG, 2.4 BPG, 53.3% FG), Maurice Cheeks (16.9 PPG, 5 RPG, 9 APG, 3.2 SPG, 48.3% FG, 80.3% FT)
Big Moves: None

The 76ers have fallen back from top contendership, although they are still in the mix. The spotlight has been on Doc as he’s declined heavily this season…and still has four years left on his contract.

Miami Heat
1983 Record: 7-18
Key Players: Albert King (15.4 PPG, 5.8 RPG), Clark Kellogg (13.9 PPG), Derek Harper (14.2 PPG, 1.4 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Heat have their eyes on the draft at this point. Anything they get from Harper, King and Kellogg is a bonus. Miami also owns Denver’s pick for the next two years from the Andrew Toney trade.

Washington Bullets
1983 Record: 4-22
Key Players: Eddie Johnson: (21.1 PPG, 5.7 RPG), World B. Free (18.3 PPG, 4.2 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The only good news for Washington so far this season is that Eddie Johnson is developing nicely.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Cleveland Cavaliers (1)

1983 Record: 19-6
Key Players: Kevin McHale (24.4 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 2.5 BPG, 55.1% FG, 83.8% FT), Rolando Blackman (19.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 53% FG, 81.8% FT, 39.7% 3P), Jim Paxson (13.8 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 3.9 APG)
Big Moves: None

What a season for the Cavs so far! McHale and Blackman have been great so far, and the addition of a playmaker like Paxson has only helped. It was thought the Cavs would be in the mix, but holding onto the #1 seed so far is exceeding expectations.

Chicago Bulls (5)
1983 Record: 18-10
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (25.3 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 51.4% FG), Terry Cummings (17 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 48.4% FG, 39.3% 3P), Vinnie Johnson (16.4 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 3.9 APG, 1.7 SPG), Johnny Moore (9.7 PPG, 9.2 APG, 2.3 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Bulls have played great basketball so far as Dominique and Terry Cummings continued their great play from their rookie seasons. The 5th seed may feel low, but the Eastern Conference is a lot tougher.

Indiana Pacers (6)
1983 Record: 16-9
Key Players: Alex English (37.5 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 4 APG, 1.3 SPG, 1.4 BPG, 51.7% FG, 87% FT), Otis Birdsong (23.7 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 3.3 APG, 2.4 SPG), Michael Cooper (12.1 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 5.7 APG, 2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Alex English’s 37.5 PPG is currently the highest scoring average for a season by anyone but Wilt Chamberlain, and he’s carrying Indiana in this tough East.

Detroit Pistons (7)
1983 Record: 19-11
Key Players: Tom Chambers (22.4 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 52.6% FG), Dennis Johnson (18.3 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 3.9 APG), Fat Lever (12.4 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 7.3 APG, 1.8 SPG)
Big Moves: None

With Dennis Johnson providing veteran leadership, the Pistons have started the 83-84 season well. Tom Chambers has continued to play well, and Fat Lever is coming along as an all-around point guard.

Milwaukee Bucks
1983 Record: 9-15
Key Players: Robert Reid (15.9 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 2.1 SPG), Walter Davis (15.4 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 4.8 APG, 2.3 SPG, Marques Johnson (22.5 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 47.5% FG)
Big Moves: None

Losing Moncrief for nothing has been devastating for Milwaukee.

New Orleans Jazz
1983 Record: 9-18
Key Players: Jeff Malone (15.2 PPG), Norm Nixon (14 PPG, 6.5 APG), Ron Brewer (14.4 PPG), Ben Poquette (9.9 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 2.5 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The Jazz have arguably done better than expected so far.

Atlanta Hawks
1983 Record: 7-19
Key Players: Eddie Johnson (13.5 PPG), Bill Laimbeer (15.5 PPG, 11.4 RPG, 1.5 BPG), John Drew (20.2 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.3 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Rookie guard John Paxson played two games before injuring his legs, and the Hawks just haven’t been able to get out of the woods. They don’t have their 1st round pick either, it was sent to New York in the Cartwright trade.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Dallas Mavericks (2)

1983 Record: 17-6
Key Players: James Worthy (22.8 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 1.1 BPG, 55.3% FG), Isiah Thomas (19.8 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 10 APG, 1.7 SPG, 56.6% FG), Kiki Vandeweghe (16.6 PPG, 5 RPG, 47.1% FG, 87.7% FT, 40.9% 3P), Ralph Sampson (18.1 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 1.8 BPG, 56.7% FG, 53.8% 3P)

Who knew that winning three straight lotteries would work out for Dallas? With their Texan rivals falling off, now may be the time for the Mavericks to win the Midwest Division.

Salt Lake Stallions (4)
1983 Record: 17-10
Key Players: Adrian Dantley (27.4 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 56.1% FG, 80.4% FT), Reggie Theus (23.9 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 7.3 APG, 1.6 SPG, 53.2% FG, 85.2% FT), Dan Roundfield (16.8 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 1 BPG, 50.9% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Stallions are peaking at the right time, with Reggie Theus especially playing well. They only have the Mavericks to get by for the Midwest at the moment.

San Antonio Spurs (7)
1983 Record: 12-15
Key Players: George Gervin (29 PPG, 6 RPG, 1.3 SPG, 52.8% FG, 81.1% FT), John Lucas (14.5 PPG, 7.2 APG, 1.8 SPG)

It looks like the Spurs’ window to snag a 2nd title has closed, but because eight teams go to the playoffs, they find themselves still with a puncher’s chance. When you have the Iceman, anything is possible.

Houston Rockets (8)
1983 Record: 10-18
Key Players: Darrell Griffith (26.8 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 3.8 APG, 1.5 SPG), Ricky Pierce (15.7 PPG, 4.4 RPG), Steve Stipanovich (11.5 PPG, 7.6 RPG), LaSalle Thompson (7.6 PPG, 9.8 RPG), Jay Vincent (15.1 PPG, 6.4 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The new Rockets are actually hanging onto an 8th seed, although considering their record tons of controversy will follow if they actually make the playoffs.

Spirits of St. Louis
1983 Record: 9-17
Key Players: Dale Ellis (22.3 PPG, 36% 3P)
Big Moves: None

9-17 is an accomplishment for the expansion Spirits. Dale Ellis has been a star so far.

Denver Nuggets
1983 Record: 4-21
Key Players: Andrew Toney: 22.5 PPG, 4.5 APG, 47.8% FG), Junior Bridgeman (18.4 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.5 SPG), Sleepy Floyd (14.9 PPG)
Big Moves: None

When the Nuggets traded for Andrew Toney they thought they’d return to at least respectability, but Denver has failed to defend anyone all season.

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Los Angeles Lakers (1)

1983 Record: 20-5
Key Players: Magic Johnson (21.3 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 12.7 APG, 1.2 SPG, 57.1% FG, 83.8% FT), Jamaal Wilkes (16.7 PPG, 5.1 RPG), Bernard King (25.5 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 55.7% FG), Buck Williams (15 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 63.9% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Lakers once again have started hot. Can they (especially King) stay healthy?

Golden State Warriors (3)
1983 Record: 19-8
Key Players: Darryl Dawkins (20.9 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 51.9% FG), Orlando Woolridge (12.9 PPG, 7 RPG, 61.4% FG), Al Wood (13.9 PPG, 1.1 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season so far. Chocolate Thunder has finally shown signs of being a franchise center. Let’s see if this is a fluke or a long term deal.

San Diego Clippers (5)
1983 Record: 13-11
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (26.2 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 1 BPG, 57% FG), Larry Nance (18.5 PPG, 9.3 RPG), Doc Rivers (14.4 PPG, 6.5 APG)

Another surprise this season, as Joe Barry Carroll has had a great season so far. An injury sidelined him late and cost San Diego some games, but if he keeps up his play when he returns they should be back on track.

Seattle Supersonics (6)
1983 Record: 13-13
Key Players: Jack Sikma (18.8 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.1 BPG, 47.1% FG, 80.5% FT), Mark Aguirre (17.3 PPG, 5 RPG), Maurice Lucas (14.3 PPG, 7 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Injuries to Terry Furlow and Maurice Lucas have stifled the Sonics so far.

Portland Trail Blazers
1983 Record: 9-17
Key Players: Kelly Tripucka (21 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 3.5 APG)
Big Moves: None

Rebuilding, yet in the playoff hunt.

Phoenix Suns
1983 Record: 9-17
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (16.2 PPG, 4.3 RPG), Paul Pressey (15.2 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 4.5 APG)
Big Moves: None

Drexler has looked good so far as the Suns continue to rebuild.

Sacramento Kings
1983 Record: 6-20
Key Players: Swen Nater (9.8 PPG, 10.8 RPG), Brad Davis (17.6 PPG, 6.8 APG), Johnny Davis (17.9 PPG, 5.9 APG)
Big Moves: None

The Kings have some pieces that some teams may find useful and will likely be active trade partners.

THROUGH ALL-STAR WEEKEND

The tough battle for the Eastern Conference continues.

The Nets and Cavaliers still are on top of the East with 37-12 records. While the Nets had some expectations, the Cleveland has to be thrilled to be where they are. With that being said, the top six seeds are separated by just 3.5 games.. Detroit has fallen back a bit, but still share a late playoff seed with the Sixers. The Lakers continue to run the West, although Dallas has shown they can compete. The Sonics and Spurs made trades to improve their point guard position and both have improved their standing so far. San Antonio traded Jerry Lucas for Brad Davis, while the Sonics traded for Ray Williams from Denver.

Indiana’s Alex English still leads the league in scoring, although his PPG dropped to 33.3 from 37.5. More familiar names rose to the top of the scoring chart, including former scoring champions David Thompson (29.4, 2nd) and George Gervin (28.2, 3rd). Moses Malone again looks to take down the rebounding title, while Magic and Micheal Ray compete for the Assists title.

ROOKIE REPORT

Dale Ellis
of the Spirits has risen to 11th on the scoring chart. Ralph Sampson has been great for Dallas, expectedly. He’s averaging 18-7.5 and has also hit 23 of 45 three point shots. Doc Rivers has provided stability at the point guard position for the Clippers. Clyde Drexler, Derek Harper and Jeff Malone are also scoring well for teams without much else going for them.

As the regular season is broken into three parts, we’ll look at ten upcoming players, with the intent that these are the top 25 prospects, that will be a part of the 1984 Rookie Draft Class. Age is listed as time of the draft.

Ron Anderson, SF, 6’7”, 215, Fresno State, 25 – What may scare teams away is Anderson’s age, but he does have potential as a scorer.

Tony Campbell, SF, 6’7”, 215, Ohio State, 22 – Campbell has elite scoring potential, but unsure if he can reach top NBA level in other aspects. A team may spend a high pick on him for his scoring though

Michael Cage, PF, 6’9”, 220, San Diego State, 22 – Tenacious rebounder who is raw otherwise, but may see a lottery selection

Steve Colter, PG, 6’3”, 175, New Mexico State, 21 – Solid point guard who may be more of a jack-of-all-trades type

Vern Fleming, PG, 6’5”, 185, Georgia, 22 – Scoring point guard who has a knack for getting to the rim

Lancaster Gordon, SG, 6’3”, 195, Louisville, 21 – The MVP of the NCAA Mideast Regional, Gordon may be a top 10 pick based on potential alone

Jay Humphries, Combo Guard, 6’3”, 185, Colorado, 21 – Combo guard with high scoring potential could end up being picked at the end of the Top 10

Tim McCormick, C, 6’11”, 240, Michigan, 22 – Big Tim McCormick has a solid offensive skillset, but his athleticism is a question

John Stockton, PG, 6’1”, 175, Gonzaga, 22 – Crafty Stockton isn’t the most athletic player in the draft, but he may have potential as the purest point guard in the draft. But that lack of athleticism may hold him back

Otis Thorpe, PF, 6’10”, 224, Providence, 21 – While not as highly regarded as some of the other bigs in this draft, Thorpe does have potential as a 20-10 guy and is likely a #6-#10 selection.

Jeff Turner, Forward, 6’9”, 240, Vanderbilt, 22 – Versatile big man can play both forward spots, which may prove useful for team with depth issues

Mel Turpin, C, 6’11”, 240, Kentucky, 24 – Big Mel Turpin is a solid rebounder and shot blocker, and could possibly plug in the middle for some teams. Should be a lotto pick.

Kevin Willis, C, 7’0”, 220, Michigan State, 21 – Seven-footer that isn’t as quite as talented as the top tier centers in the draft, but could pan out to be an All-Star.

Leon Wood, PG, 6’3”, 185, Cal State-Fullerton, 22 – A All-American who probably has less potential than Gordon or Robertson, but should grade out as a solid pro.

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

New Jersey Nets (2)

1983 Record: 37-12 (20-7, 17-5)
Key Players: Moses Malone (22.2 PPG, 12.5 RPG, 1.3 BPG, 51.1% FG), Sidney Moncrief (21.9 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 5 APG, 2.4 SPG, 53.0% FG), Calvin Natt (18.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 53.2% FG), Cliff Robinson (15.3 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 1 SPG, 1.2 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The Nets continue to pace the Eastern Conference behind perhaps the best foursome in the league: Moses, Moncrief, Cliff Robinson and Calvin Natt.

New York Knicks (5)
1983 Record: 33-15 (18-7, 15-8)
Key Players: David Thompson (29.4 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3.2 APG, 52.4% FG), Micheal Ray Richardson (18.3 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 11.5 APG, 2.5 SPG), Mark Eaton (7.6 RPG, 4.0 BPG), Tree Rollins (7.4 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 2.3 BPG)
Big Moves: None

It was a good stretch of games for the Knicks, but even being good loses ground in the East. Skywalker and Micheal Ray have been excellent nonetheless, although Moncrief got the starting PG nod for the All-Star Game to some surprise.

Boston Celtics (6)
1983 Record: 33-15 (20-8, 13-7)
Key Players: Larry Bird (27.6 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 8.0 APG, 2.3 SPG, 50.7% FG, 91.6% FT, 40.2% 3P), Gus Williams (21 PPG, 6 APG, 2.1 SPG), Jawann Oldham (8.3 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 2.8 BPG)
Big Moves: None

Injuries to Gus Williams has slowed the Celtic momentum a bit, but Larry Bird still has Boston winning. We’ll see if they can keep up with the rest of the East to get to their fourth straight NBA Finals.

Philadelphia 76ers (8)
1983 Record: 28-21 (16-12, 12-9)
Key Players: Julius Erving (18.1 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.6 SPG), Robert Parish (20.9 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 2.7 BPG, 53.3% FG), Maurice Cheeks (15.3 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 9.2 APG, 2.7 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Good news for the Sixers is that Dr. J had a good stretch and still has some life in him. The bad news is that they still are struggling to keep up with the rest of the East, and the Atlantic. Barring disaster they’ll have a playoff spot locked up nonetheless.

Miami Heat
1983 Record: 12-38 (7-18, 5-20)
Key Players: Derek Harper (14.3 PPG, 4.0 APG, 1.3 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Miami is just counting down the days to the draft. With their selection or Denver’s selection, a top 3 pick almost feels guaranteed for the snakebitten Heat. Harper has been a solid rookie.

Washington Bullets
1983 Record: 9-41 (4-22, 5-19)
Key Players: Eddie Johnson: (21.2 PPG, 5.7 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Despite the record, the Bullets do have some things to look forward to. Eddie Johnson has proven to be a keeper this season, and they own their draft pick this year.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Cleveland Cavaliers (1)

1983 Record: 37-12 (19-6, 18-6)
Key Players: Kevin McHale (24.4 PPG, 9.6 RPG, 2.3 BPG, 55.6% FG, 83% FT), Rolando Blackman (21.4 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 53.1% FG, 85% FT, 38.3% 3P), Jim Paxson (12.9 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 4.5 APG, 2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Cavaliers continue to exceed expectations. Kevin McHale and Rolando Blackman have shown to be an unstoppable combination this season.

Chicago Bulls (3)
1983 Record: 36-15 (18-10, 18-5)
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (25.4 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 53.8% FG), Terry Cummings (17.4 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 48.5% FG), Vinnie Johnson (15.2 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 4.2 APG, 1.6 SPG), Johnny Moore (10.3 PPG, 9.2 APG, 2.2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Great stretch for the Bulls as they’re right behind the Cavaliers for the Central division. Dominique has continued to be dominant, while contributions from Johnny Moore, Alvan Adams and Alton Lister have helped push them to another level.

Indiana Pacers (4)
1983 Record: 33-15 (16-9, 19-6)
Key Players: Alex English (33.3 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 4.0 APG, 1.0 SPG, 1.4 BPG, 4.8.8% FG, 85.6% FT), Otis Birdsong (24.1 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 3.5 APG, 2.7 SPG), Michael Cooper (12.3 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 5.4 APG, 2.2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

English continues to lead the league in scoring, but Indiana was able to distribute the load better and the result was a better record.

Detroit Pistons (7)
1983 Record: 30-21 (19-11, 11-10)
Key Players: Tom Chambers (21.1 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 51.4% FG), Dennis Johnson (16.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 3.7 APG, 1.8 SPG), Fat Lever (12.3 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 7.4 APG, 1.8 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Pistons fell back a bit as the calendar turned to 1984. They should be good for a playoff spot, although they are in danger to falling to 8th behind Philadelphia.

Atlanta Hawks
1983 Record: 20-29 (7-19, 13-10)
Key Players: Eddie Johnson (13.2 PPG, 4.8 APG), Bill Laimbeer (15.7 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 1.4 BPG), John Drew (18.9 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 1.2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Hawks found some wins in 1984. It’s likely too late to make a playoff run though, but they could be active at the deadline if they decide to pursue it.

Milwaukee Bucks
1983 Record: 19-28 (9-15, 10-13)
Key Players: Robert Reid (14.3 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 1.8 SPG), Walter Davis (17.3 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 5.0 APG, 2.0 SPG), Marques Johnson (22.2 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 47.5% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Bucks, who just two seasons ago looked to be a team on the rise, now likely need to rebuild.

New Orleans Jazz
1983 Record: 14-37 (9-18, 5-19)
Key Players: Jeff Malone (14.1 PPG), Ron Brewer (15.2 PPG)
Big Moves: None

The Jazz continue to develop Jeff Malone in their first season back in the NBA.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Dallas Mavericks (2)

1983 Record: 34-14 (17-6, 17-8)
Key Players: James Worthy (24.8 PPG, 8.6 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 1.1 BPG, 56.1% FG), Isiah Thomas (19.6 PPG, 9.5 APG, 1.3 SPG, 57.0% FG), Kiki Vandeweghe (15.9 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 3.4 APG, 46.6% FG, 88.9% FT, 39.1% 3P), Ralph Sampson (18.0 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 1.5 BPG, 58.1% FG, 51.1% 3P)

Dallas continues to be the class of the Midwest division and has a very strong holding on the #2 seed.

Salt Lake Stallions (5)
1983 Record: 27-23 (17-10, 10-13)
Key Players: Adrian Dantley (26.4 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 55.0% FG, 81.2% FT), Reggie Theus (22.4 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 6.6 APG, 1.7 SPG, 52.0% FG, 83.6% FT), Dan Roundfield (16.6 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 1.4 BPG, 50.8% FG)
Big Moves: None

Salt Lake crashed down during the winter months, but because the West is generally weaker they had little issue holding onto a decent playoff spot.

San Antonio Spurs (6)
1983 Record: 25-24 (12-15, 13-9)
Key Players: George Gervin (28.2 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 54.1% FG, 82.1% FT), Brad Davis (18.2 PPG, 7.3 APG, 1.3 SPG)
Big Moves: Traded John Lucas and a 1986 1st Round Pick for Swen Nater and Brad Davis

With it likely that John Lucas was playing his last season in San Antonio, the Spurs decided to pry open their title window just a bit longer by obtaining Brad Davis. It has pushed the Spurs to the positive side of .500.

Houston Rockets
1983 Record: 17-32 (10-18, 7-14)
Key Players: Darrell Griffith (25.8 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3.7 APG, 1.5 SPG), Ricky Pierce (15.2 PPG, 4.1 RPG), Steve Stipanovich (10.2 PPG, 7.2 RPG), LaSalle Thompson (8.3 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 1.4 BPG), Jay Vincent (14.8 PPG, 6.3 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Houston’s issue has been that they’ve struggled to defend anyone this season. That’s something they’ll have to work on in the off-season.

Spirits of St. Louis
1983 Record: 16-33 (9-17, 7-16)
Key Players: Dale Ellis (24.6 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 36.5% 3P)
Big Moves: None

Dale Ellis may be the first strong building block for the Spirits franchise.

Denver Nuggets
1983 Record: 9-39 (4-21, 5-18)
Key Players: Andrew Toney (20.7 PPG, 4.4 APG), Junior Bridgeman (18 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 3.6 APG)
Big Moves: Traded Ray Williams to Seattle for a 1986 1st Round Pick

Denver got some draft capital from Seattle in trading Ray Williams, but a lot of work will need to be done to rebuild the franchise. Unfortunately, Andrew Toney hasn’t delivered for Denver enough to off-set what Miami received for him.

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Los Angeles Lakers (1)

1983 Record: 40-8 (20-5, 20-3)
Key Players: Magic Johnson (22.2 PPG, 9.0 RPG, 12.4 APG, 1.5 SPG, 56.7% FG, 82.3% FT), Jamaal Wilkes (15.3 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 1.2 SPG), Bernard King (25.3 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 56.5% FG), Buck Williams (14.3 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 61.6% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Lakers have so far stayed healthy unlike prior seasons, and as a result they’ve dominated the NBA. Magic is eyeing a 2nd MVP.

Golden State Warriors (3)
1983 Record: 30-18 (19-8, 11-10)
Key Players: Darryl Dawkins (20.6 PPG, 10.9 RPG, 1.3 BPG, 52.9% FG), Orlando Woolridge (13.7 PPG, 7 RPG, 59.4% FG)
Big Moves: None

Despite regressing in the winter the Warriors have held onto the #3 seed, but Seattle is catching up.

Seattle Supersonics (4)
1983 Record: 27-22 (13-13, 14-9)
Key Players: Jack Sikma (19.6 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 3.3 APG, 1 BPG, 48.7% FG, 36.8% 3P), Mark Aguirre (18.8 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 49.6% FG), Maurice Lucas (15.4 PPG, 8.5 RPG)
Big Moves: Traded a 1986 1st Round Pick to Denver for Ray Williams

Seattle fixed a point guard problem by obtaining Ray Williams and it’s changed Seattle’s season. Will it be enough to challenge the top Western powers?

San Diego Clippers (7)
1983 Record: 23-24 (13-11, 10-13)
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (24.9 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 1.1 BPG, 54.4% FG), Larry Nance (16.6 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 1.9 BPG), Doc Rivers (14.1 PPG, 6.4 APG)

The Clippers fell off a bit despite Joe Barry Carroll’s breakout season. They still have a good hold on a playoff spot nonetheless.

Phoenix Suns (8)
1983 Record: 18-31 (9-17, 9-14)
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (15.5 PPG, 4.5 RPG), Paul Pressey (16.2 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 5.1 APG)
Big Moves: None

Drexler still looks good, and the young Suns barely have their grasp on the #8 seed.

Portland Trail Blazers
1983 Record: 16-31 (9-17, 7-14)
Key Players: Kelly Tripucka (23.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 3.6 APG, 1.2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Portland vs. Phoenix may be one of the least inspiring playoff chases in NBA history.

Sacramento Kings
1983 Record: 11-37 (6-20, 5-17)
Key Players: Johnny Davis (18.0 PPG, 6.2 APG), John Lucas (15.9 PPG, 8.1 APG
Big Moves: Traded Brad Davis to San Antonio for John Lucas and a 1986 1st Round Pick

Interestingly, John Lucas has played quite well in Sacramento so far.

END OF THE SEASON

There weren’t many surprises down the stretch in 1984. The Lakers finished strong, tying the greatest NBA record of all-time (in an 82 game season) with the 1973 Celtics at 68-14 (Only the 1967 76ers were better winning% wise at 68-13). With Magic finishing the season with a triple-double average, it looked like the MVP would be surely his. Surprisingly, this is not the case, as Larry Bird was awarded his 2nd straight MVP with a 30-10-8 average for a 61-win Celtics team. The Celtics did not win the division, as the New Jersey Nets continued their impressive play, finishing with 63 wins. The Atlantic Division in fact had the second, third and fourth highest records in the entire NBA, with the Knicks also putting together a 59 win season. In the Central the Bulls took down the division via tiebreaker against the Pacers. Dallas easily won the Midwest. The biggest surprise were the Suns, who had a strong spring and found their way to the 7th seed of the West.

ROOKIE REPORT

Dale Ellis
of the Spirits took down the 1984 Rookie of the Year award with a great rookie season at 23.9 PPG and 6.1 RPG. Ralph Sampson perhaps was the victim of the Mavericks not needing him as much, which likely hampered his statistics. Sampson still led all rookies in rebounding. Doc Rivers led in APG. Clyde Drexler, Jeff Malone, Derek Harper and Byron Scott all showed promises.

1/6 – CAVALIERS 132, Mavericks 115 – Kevin McHale gives Ralph Sampson a welcoming to the league, dropping 44 points, 15 rebounds on 19 for 24 shooting. Rolando Blackman added 37, wasting Isiah’s 23-8-7

1/15 – Lakers 113, SONICS 105 – Magic continues his quest for a 2nd MVP with a 29-7-19. LA survives Sikma’s 21-14-10 and Maurice Lucas’ 14-18

1/15 – CAVALIERS 100, Celtics 98 – Rolando Blackman’s 36-7-6 edges out Bird’s 29-11-7 as the Cavs pick up a crucial Eastern Conference win

1/16 – KNICKS 112, Celtics 111 – The Celtics lose another close Eastern Conference match-up as Micheal Ray drops a 27-12-12-5 and David Thompson scores 39

1/17 – KNICKS 128, Rockets 115 – The Knicks continue to steamroll over teams as their players put up crazy statlines. Micheal Ray put up a 19-8-18. Skywalker scored 48. Even Mark Eaton had a big day, with 7 points, 13 boards and 7 blocks

1/26 – Knicks 109, PACERS 80 – Micheal Ray continues his tear across the league with a near quad-double: 12 points, 8 rebounds, 17 assists and 7 steals

1/29 – Celtics 123, LAKERS 121 – This Finals rematch delivered on all accounts. While Bernard King dropped 39 and Magic had another sensational game with an 18-12-19…Bird put together a 50-point triple-double, a 50-11-13, to carry Boston to victory

2/8 – LAKERS 116, Sonics 110 – Magic once again puts on a show against division rival Seattle, this time distributing 25 assists

2/14 – MAVERICKS 143, Nuggets 133 – Denver’s Sleepy Floyd dropped 41, but James Worthy had 39 points and 21 boards (and 5 blocks) to lead the Mavericks in this high scoring affair

2/14 – Pacers 120, CAVALIERS 118 (OT) – Alex English (32-14-15) and Kevin McHale (34-12) duel in this important division match-up

2/17 – PISTONS 111, Pacers 103 – Tom Chambers reminds the league that the Pistons are playing winning basketball too, dropping 46 points

2/21 – PACERS 133, Mavericks 128 (OT) – Indiana wins a wild OT game where Alex English had a 34-12-5 and Billy Knight added a 33-7-5. Dallas was led by Isiah’s 31 points and 20 assists

2/24 – KNICKS 110, Nets 91 – The Knicks make a huge statement in this NY/NJ rivalry. Mark Eaton and Tree Rollins combine for 16 blocks while Micheal Ray had a 25-14-15

2/28 – ROCKETS 127, Lakers 126 (OT) – The Rockets upset LA behind Darrell Griffth’s 47

3/2 – Lakers 137, NETS 127 – In a potential Finals preview, Bernard King scores 42 and Magic has a 26-11-14 to offset Moses’ 32-10-4-4-5

3/17 – ROCKETS 113, Mavericks 112– Houston tries to keep its playoff hopes alive with a big division win against Dallas. LaSalle Thompson shows off some potential with 21 boards and 4 blocks. Sampson dropped 31

3/23 – Bills 117, CAVALIERS 106 – ‘Nique runs over division rival Cavs with 46 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks

3/24 – MAVERICKS 130, Bulls 114 - Isiah, Worthy and Sampson all stuff the stat sheet in a big win against Dallas. Isiah had a 28-9-21, James Worthy scored 36, and Sampson had a 13-9-3-3-2

3/27 – CELTICS 117, Pacers 111 (OT) – Bird outduels English in OT, 43-17 against 42-14-7

4/1 – Knicks 77, NETS 71 – The Knicks win another NY/NJ rivalry game, with Skywalker scoring 45 of the Knicks’ 77 points

4/1 – Lakers 145, SPURS 121 – Ice’s 51 isn’t enough as Magic locks in another triple-double

4/6 – CELTICS 133, Bullets 113 – Bird was unstoppable as the Celtics chase another Atlantic Division crown. He had a 49-11-9-4

4/7 – CELTICS 131, Jazz 93 – Bird is incredible again with a 40-8-13

4/9 – Sonics 128, PACERS 134 (OT) – Sikma and Maurice Lucas combine for 33 boards as English’s 40 isn’t enough to get by Seattle

4/12 – SUNS 124, Mavericks 114 – In what turned out to be a playoff preview, rookie Clyde Drexler scored 31 in a huge win for Phoenix’s playoff hopes

4/14 – CELTICS 132, Knicks 103 – Bird destroys New York for 54 points

As the regular season is broken into three parts, we’ll look at ten upcoming players, with the intent that these are the top 20-25 prospects, that will be a part of the 1984 Rookie Draft Class. Age is listed as time of the draft.

Ron Anderson, SF, 6’7”, 215, Fresno State, 25 – What may scare teams away is Anderson’s age, but he does have potential as a scorer.

Jerome Kersey, PG, 6’7”, 222, Longwood, 21 – Intriguing two-way player that isn’t coming from a known school

Tim McCormick, C, 6’11”, 240, Michigan, 22 – Big Tim McCormick has a solid offensive skillset, but his athleticism is a question

Oscar Schmidt, PG, 6’1”, 175, Brazil, 26 – Schmidt is an interesting prospect, as he’s already one of the best players outside of the United States

John Stockton, SF, 6’8”, 220, Brazil, 22 – Crafty Stockton isn’t the most athletic player in the draft, but he may have potential as the purest point guard in the draft.

Danny Young, PG, 6’4”, 175, Wake Forest, 21 – Solid point guard who’s size may limit him a bit

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

New Jersey Nets (1)

1983 Record: 63-19 (20-7, 17-5, 26-7)
Key Players: Moses Malone (22.8 PPG, 12.8 RPG, 1.5 BPG, 52.4%), Sidney Moncrief (21.4 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 4.9 APG, 2.3 SPG, 50.8% FG), Calvin Natt (18.2 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 51.9% FG)
Big Moves: None

The Nets played great through the Spring and emerged as the #1 Seed in the East.

Boston Celtics (3)
1983 Record: 61-21 (20-8, 13-7, 28-6)
Key Players: Larry Bird (29.9 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 8.2 APG, 2.1 SPG, 50.1% FG, 91.8% FT, 37.9% 3P) Gus Williams (20.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 6.0 APG, 1.9 SPG), Jawann Oldham (8.5 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 2.9 BPG)
Big Moves: None

Despite injuries to Gus Williams, the Celtics powered to another 60-win season. Bird was so great that he was awarded his 2nd straight MVP, surprisingly over LA’s Magic.

New York Knicks (4)
1983 Record: 59-23 (18-7, 15-8, 26-8)
Key Players: David Thompson (29.3 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 3.0 APG, 52.7% FG), Micheal Ray Richardson (17.4 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 11.6 APG, 2.2 SPG), Mark Eaton (7.7 RPG, 3.9 BPG), Tree Rollins (7.7 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 2.5 BPG)
Big Moves: None

New York’s defensive monster lineup have the Knicks ranked 2nd in Defensive Efficiency (behind rival NJ). Can they hold team down in the playoffs?

Philadelphia 76ers (8)
1983 Record: 43-39 (16-12, 12-9, 15-18)
Key Players: Julius Erving (18.9 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.4 SPG), Robert Parish (20.7 PPG, 10.5 RPG, 1.0 SPG, 2.5 BPG, 50.8% FG), Maurice Cheeks (15.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 9.0 APG, 2.6 SPG)
Big Moves: None

A late-season injury to Robert Parish caused the Sixers to stumble down the stretch. They likely won’t have Parish for Round 1 against Chicago either.

Miami Heat
1983 Record: 22-60 (7-18, 5-20, 10-22)
Key Players: Derek Harper (14.6 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.3 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Miami as a franchise has to be excited with two top draft picks…but wins need to come or the franchise won’t survive.

Washington Bullets
1983 Record: 20-62 (4-22, 5-19, 11-21)
Key Players: Eddie Johnson: (19.9 PPG, 5.9 RPG)
Big Moves: None

Despite the record, the Bullets do have some things to look forward to. Eddie Johnson has proven to be a keeper this season, and they own their draft pick this year.

Eastern Conference

Central Division

Chicago Bulls (2)

1983 Record: 56-26 (18-10, 18-5, 20-9)
Key Players: Dominique Wilkins (25.7 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 54.3% FG), Terry Cummings (17.1 PPG, 7.4 RPG), Vinnie Johnson (15.2 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 4.1 APG, 1.5 SPG), Johnny Moore (10.2 PPG, 9.7 APG, 2.2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Bulls played well in the spring to edge out the Pacers for the Central crown. The young combo of Dominique and Terry Cummings will be tough to beat in the playoffs.

Indiana Pacers (5)
1983 Record: 56-26 (16-9, 19-6, 23-11)
Key Players: Alex English (31.8 PPG, 8.4 RPG, 3.9 APG, 1.4 BPG, 49.5% FG, 82.7% FT), Otis Birdsong (24.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 3.7 APG, 2.7 SPG), Michael Cooper (12.9 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 5.2 APG, 2.7 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Pacers put together their best season record wise, led by Scoring Champion English and Defensive Player of the Year Cooper. Still, because of Chicago, the Pacers did not lock up the #2 seed and have to head to New York.

Cleveland Cavaliers (6)
1983 Record: 53-29 (19-6, 18-6, 16-15)
Key Players: Kevin McHale (24.7 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 2.1 BPG, 54.7% FG, 82% FT), Rolando Blackman (20.5 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 50% FG, 84.3% FT)
Big Moves: None

The Cavs fell off a bit down the stretch, which unluckily for them dropped them to the #6 seed. Still, Kevin McHale and Rolando Blackman can clearly beat anyone in a series. They’ll have their work cut out for them against MVP Bird and Boston.

Detroit Pistons (7)
1983 Record: 44-38 (19-11, 11-10, 14-17)
Key Players: Tom Chambers (22.2 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 52.3% FG), Dennis Johnson (16.7 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 3.7 APG, 1.8 SPG), Fat Lever (12.5 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 7.4 APG, 1.8 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Not a great spring for Detroit, but the Pistons still ended up with a +500 record, and if Tom Chambers goes off Detroit may make some noise.

Milwaukee Bucks
1983 Record: 34-48 (9-15, 10-13, 15-20)
Key Players: Robert Reid (14.2 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.6 SPG), Walter Davis (16.8 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 4.8 APG, 2.0 SPG), Marques Johnson (22.7 PPG, 7.2 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The Bucks, who just two seasons ago looked to be a team on the rise, now likely need to rebuild.

Atlanta Hawks
1983 Record: 30-52 (7-19, 13-10, 10-23)
Key Players: Eddie Johnson (13.3 PPG, 4.9 APG), Bill Laimbeer (15.1 PPG, 10.4 RPG, 1.4 BPG), John Drew (18.9 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 1.2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

The Hawks fell back down to earth in the spring. There’s a lot of work to be done in Atlanta as their playoff window seems to have closed.

New Orleans Jazz
1983 Record: 18-64 (9-18, 5-19, 4-27)
Key Players: Jeff Malone (14.0 PPG), Ron Brewer (15.7 PPG)
Big Moves: None

The Jazz continue to develop Jeff Malone in their first season back in the NBA. They’ll have second highest odds for the NBA draft.

Western Conference

Midwest Division

Dallas Mavericks (2)

1983 Record: 55-27 (17-6, 17-8, 21-13)
Key Players: James Worthy (24.2 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 1.5 SPG, 1.1 BPG, 54.3% FG), Isiah Thomas (20.2 PPG, 9.7 APG, 1.6 SPG, 54.4% FG), Kiki Vandeweghe (16.5 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 3.3 APG, 47.4% FG, 87.3% FT, 38.5% 3P), Ralph Sampson (17.9 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 1. BPG, 57% FG, 41.9% 3P)

Dallas continues to be the class of the Midwest division and has a very strong holding on the #2 seed. Things are looking up for Dallas not only in these playoffs, but for the immediate future.

Salt Lake Stallions (5)
1983 Record: 42-40 (17-10, 10-13, 15-17)
Key Players: Adrian Dantley (26.4 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 54.5% FG, 81% FT), Reggie Theus (21.6 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 6.0 APG, 1.7 SPG, 50.6% FG, 84% FT), Dan Roundfield (16.5 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 1.2 BPG, 50% FG)
Big Moves: None

Stallions continued to stumble in the spring, but fortunately for them the West overall hasn’t shown much strength, and they still ended up with the #5 seed.

San Antonio Spurs (6)
1983 Record: 41-41 (12-15, 13-9, 16-17)
Key Players: George Gervin (29.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 1.2 SPG, 53.5% FG, 81.6% FT), Brad Davis (16.2 PPG, 7.1 APG, 1.3 SPG)
Big Moves: None

Spurs didn’t finish too strong, although Ice has been amazing. We’ll see if Gervin can power the Spurs to a playoff series win or two in the weaker West.

Houston Rockets
1983 Record: 36-46 (10-18, 7-14, 19-14)
Key Players: Darrell Griffith (25.0 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3.5 APG, 1.4 SPG), Ricky Pierce (15.8 PPG, 4.3 RPG), Steve Stipanovich (10.0 PPG, 7.3 RPG), LaSalle Thompson (8.1 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 1.4 BPG)
Big Moves: None

The Rockets played well down the stretch and even scored wins over the Lakers and Mavericks, but just missed the playoffs via tiebreaker. There are a lot of intriguing pieces in Houston nonetheless, and perhaps they’ll be able to add another in the draft.

Spirits of St. Louis
1983 Record: 28-54 (9-17, 7-16, 12-21)
Key Players: Dale Ellis (23.9 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 39.3% 3P)
Big Moves: None

Dale Ellis is your 1984 Rookie of the Year. A good start for the Spirits.

Denver Nuggets
1983 Record: 15-67 (4-21, 5-18, 6-28)
Key Players: Andrew Toney (21.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 4.4 APG), Junior Bridgeman (17.2 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 1.3 SPG)
Big Moves: None

There’s a long road ahead of the Nuggets in this rebuilding process. They have some late draft capital to work with, but there’s a lot that has to be done.

Western Conference

Pacific Division

Los Angeles Lakers (1)

1983 Record: 68-14 (20-5, 20-3, 18-6)
Key Players: Magic Johnson (22.7 PPG, 10 RPG, 12.3 APG, 1.5 SPG, 55.5% FG, 81.3% FT), Jamaal Wilkes (15.0 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.3 SPG), Bernard King 24.9 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 3.4 APG, 57.3% FG), Buck Williams (14.3 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 61.8% FG)
Big Moves: None

Magic became the 2nd player in NBA history to average a triple-double for a season after Oscar Robertson. Shockingly, he did not win MVP for this. The Lakers have put together several 60 win seasons this decade, but haven’t made the Finals in any of them. That’ll have to change if they want to make their 2nd straight Finals.

Seattle Supersonics (3)
1983 Record: 49-33 (13-13, 14-9, 22-11)
Key Players: Jack Sikma (19.2 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 1.1 BPG), Mark Aguirre (18.6 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 49.0% FG), Maurice Lucas (14.9 PPG, 9.5 RPG)
Big Moves: None

The Sonics did really well in the spring. They have a lot of playoff experience and gave the #1 seeded Rockets a run for their money last season. We will see if they can keep that momentum going.

Golden State Warriors (4)
1983 Record: 44-38 (19-8, 11-10, 14-20)
Key Players: Darryl Dawkins (20.4 PPG, 10.7 RPG, 1.5 BPG, 53.0% FG), Orlando Woolridge (12.9 PPG, 6.9 RPG, 61.2% FG)
Big Moves: None

Golden State did not play well in the spring, but still they were able to lock-in homecourt advantage for Round 1 against the Stallions.

Phoenix Suns (7)
1983 Record: 37-45 (9-17, 9-14, 19-14)
Key Players: Clyde Drexler (16.7 PPG, 5.1 RPG), Paul Pressey (15.8 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 4.5 APG), Greg Ballard (17.4 PPG)
Big Moves: None

Clyde Drexler showed some star potential down the stretch and led the Suns back to the playoffs. They showed they could beat Dallas, their Round 1 opponent, late in the season as well.

San Diego Clippers (8)
1983 Record: 36-46 (13-11, 10-13, 13-22)
Key Players: Joe Barry Carroll (24.0 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 1.3 BPG, 53.2% FG), Larry Nance (17.3 PPG, 9 RPG, 1.9 BPG, 50.4% FG), Doc Rivers (14.5 PPG, 6.8 APG)

There was so much promise early on, but then the Clippers once again fell apart. They nearly missed the playoffs, ending up winning a tiebreaker for the #8 seed. A move to Anaheim is strongly rumored.

Portland Trail Blazers
1983 Record: 34-48 (9-17, 7-14, 18-17)
Key Players: Kelly Tripucka (24.4 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 3.6 APG)
Big Moves: None

Portland just missed out on the playoffs. Some luck in the draft may speed up the rebuilding process as they have some decent pieces.

Sacramento Kings
1983 Record: 22-60 (6-20, 5-17, 11-23)
Key Players: Johnny Davis (17.3 PPG, 6.1 APG), John Lucas (17 PPG, 7.4 APG, 2.2 SPG)
Big Moves: None

John Lucas went on a bit of a run that may get him paid by someone…even Sacramento. That being said the Kings have a lot to work on.

Playoff Preview

Western Conference Round 1

Best of Five
#8
San Diego Clippers (36-46) vs. #1 Los Angeles Lakers (68-14)

Season Results

11/6 – Lakers 98, CLIPPERS 87
12/11 – Lakers 128, CLIPPERS 108
3/30 – LAKERS 114, Clippers 88
4/7 – CLIPPERS 111, Lakers 99
4/12 – LAKERS 116, Clippers 84

Series Preview
At most a geographical rivalry, the Lakers have been one of the top franchises in the league while the Clippers have struggled to exist. The Clippers looked like they had some promise early on before stumbling through the rest of the season while the Lakers have been the class of the league since opening day. San Diego has some interesting talent, and if San Diego’s Joe Barry Carroll can take advantage of the center match-up against the aging Kareem and Bill Cartwright, maybe San Diego will find a win. Really there’s just too much power on the Laker side to think the Clippers have a realistic chance. Rookie Doc Rivers against Magic Johnson at the point guard spot is going to be rough.

3/16 – Warriors 100, STALLIONS 86

Series Preview
Both Salt Lake and Golden State have tried to break through to the upper level of Western Conference teams, but have continuously come up short. The Stallions are led by scoring trio Adrian Dantley, Reggie Theus and Dan Roundfield while the Warriors are led by “Chocolate Thunder” Darryl Dawkins. The Warriors will need to slow down Dantley, who was the 5th leading scorer in the NBA in 1984. Dantley has powered the Stallions to a top 5 offense in the NBA. The Warriors will also need a big series from Dawkins to have any realistic chance.

3/8 – MAVERICKS 125, Suns 100
4/12 – SUNS 124, Mavericks 114

Series Preview
The Suns are on the way back, led by rookie Clyde Drexler. The Suns were pretty strong throughout the second half of the season to lock-in a playoff spot. The Mavericks have had a stranglehold on the Midwest Division throughout the season. Home court seems to matter a lot for this series, as the home team won each game between these two teams by double-digits. On paper the Mavericks look to be the way better team. Dallas’s Isiah Thomas has led one of the NBA’s strongest offenses. Flanked by scorers James Worthy and Kiki Vandeweghe with rookie sensation Ralph Sampson in the middle, it seems like Dallas should have this in hand. If there is a weakness to exploit, it would be the defense of Worthy and Vandeweghe. That’ll be Phoenix’s best chance.

2/27 – Sonics 123, SPURS 111

Series Preview
The Sonics were just one game away from the Western Conference Finals last season. Since the calendar turned to 1984, the Sonics have clearly been the third best team in the West. Their key move this season was landing Ray Williams to run the offense. Unfortunately for the Spurs, they’re headed the wrong direction. While they hung onto a playoff spot and George Gervin is still playing at an elite level, they aren’t nearly the same team that won the NBA Title two seasons ago. They’ve struggled to replace Bill Laimbeer at center and traded disgruntled point guard John Lucas for Brad Davis to mixed results. Seattle has the playoff experience and firepower to take down the Spurs, but Iceman Gervin can still win the whole series on his own if he goes off.

Series Preview
This was setting up to be an intriguing series. But with Philly’s Robert Parish out for the series, the Nets now have a massive advantage in the middle in Moses Malone. We’ll see if Dr. J and Mo Cheeks can get something going, but this feels like a passing of the torch. The Sixers had been on top of the East for the last 6-7 years while the Nets made huge moves to suddenly get to the top. If Julius Erving can throw out some throwback performances, maybe the Sixers find an upset. But the Sixers also need to stop Moses, Sidney Moncrief, Calvin Natt and Cliff Robinson. Without Parish, that feels like a tall task. The Nets are the most well rounded team in the league, finishing in the top 5 in every relevant category (see below).

2/4 – Pacers 97, KNICKS 96
3/26 – Pacers 122, KNICKS 113

Series Preview

Interestingly, both the Pacers and Knicks may be sporting their best teams of the decade. The Knicks will throw their towers of defense at Indiana in Mark Eaton and Tree Rollins and have David Thompson and Micheal Ray Richardson produce the offense. But Eaton and Rollins will have to deal with the NBA’s leading scorer, Indiana’s Alex English. On the opposite end, Thompson and Micheal Ray will see a lot of Indiana’s top defensive duo of Otis Birdsong and Defensive Player of the Year Michael Cooper. Both New York and Indiana are hungry: The Knicks of course blew a 2-0 lead last year against the Bucks while the Pacers were just two games from the NBA Finals. Two of the top three scorers (English and Thompson), three of the top pick pockets (Birdsong, Cooper, Richardson), and two of the top five shot blockers (Eaton and Rollins) are in this series. With a combined record of 115-49, both teams have title aspirations, but only one will move on.

Series Preview
A tough series here for Detroit. The Pistons were unable to defeat the Bulls all season, only hitting the 95 point mark once. Dennis Johnson will have his work cut out for him having to be the main defensive piece covering Dominique Wilkins and Vinnie Johnson. The Tom Chambers vs. Terry Cummings match-up at the power forward position could also make this series interesting. Still, the Bulls have shown to be a young powerhouse and it’ll be tough for the Pistons to get by Chicago here. The Pistons will need to play their slow, defense-first game to have a shot at slowing down the Human Highlight Reel Wilkins.

Series Preview
This is a tough draw for the Cavaliers. Cleveland had held onto the #1 seed most of the season, but a late swoon dropped them to #6 and now they have to face MVP Larry Bird. Still, Kevin McHale and Rolando Blackman have been excellent, and the addition of Jim Paxson helped push the Cavaliers into a contender. The Celtics, despite being 61-21, don’t seem as strong as last season. While Bird locked up his 2nd straight MVP, Gus Williams struggled to stay healthy most of the season and Purvis Short went back to being the inconsistent player he was in Golden State as opposed Bird’s reliable #2. Still, beating Bird will be a tall task for any team. Kevin McHale is also recovering from a sprained ankle and while he’s expected to play, that’s just another thing Cleveland doesn’t need in this series.

Game 1 - #7 Phoenix Suns at #2 Dallas Mavericks

The Suns were giving the Mavericks a run for their money in the first half, but Dallas put the Suns away with a 58-41 second half. All of Dallas’s big guns came to play and Isiah was brilliant with a 27-10-9. Rookies Clyde Drexler and Ralph Sampson were impressive in their debuts. Drexler had 19, Sampson a 15-12.

Game 1 - #6 San Antonio Spurs at #3 Seattle Supersonics

The Spurs hung with the Sonics in the first quarter, as it was 41-39 Sonics. But the Seattle firepower was too much for Ice and co. to handle. The big men for Seattle especially had a field day. Jack Sikma, Maurice Lucas and backup center James Bailey combined for 76 points as Seattle went up 1-0.

SUPERSONICS 130, Spurs 112 (Supersonics lead 1-0)

Game 1 - #8 Philadelphia 76ers at #1 New Jersey Nets

Philly tried, but without The Chief, Moses and the Nets ran right through them in Game 1. Four players for the Nets scored 19 or more and the Nets just never had a chance.

Game 1 - #5 Indiana Pacers at #4 New York Knicks

The Knicks exploded out to a 42-21 first quarter and shut the Pacers down overall to win Game 1 in Madison Square Garden. Alex English struggled to deal with the monster New York combination of Tree Rollins and Mark Eaton as the Knicks bench played great to extend the lead. Toby Knight and playoff veteran Gerald Henderson (from Boston) scored 37 off the bench, and Larry Smith grabbed 13 boards. Micheal Ray Richardson of course ran the whole offense as he dropped 17 assists.

KNICKS 119, Pacers 97 (Knicks lead 1-0)

Pacers Stats
Otis Birdsong: 20 PTS, 4 AST, 6 STL
Alex English: 19 PTS, 7/23 FG

Game 1 - #7 Detroit Pistons at #2 Chicago Bulls

Tom Chambers
was unstoppable for Detroit in Game 1, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with Chicago. No one particularly stood out for the Bulls, veteran Alvan Adams led the way with 22 points. And Dominique had 20. Chambers scored 36, but no one else had more than 12 for the Pistons. Still, the Pistons played well and will be eyeing a road split in Game 2.

BULLS 104, Pistons 98 (Bulls lead 1-0)

Pistons Stats
Tom Chambers; 36 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST, 1 STL, 2 BLK

Game 1 - #6 Cleveland Cavaliers at #3 Boston Celtics

The Cavs hung with the Celtics after a slow start and have taken a two point lead with 3 minutes to go, 97-95. Bird quickly hits a jumper to tie the game at 97. Kevin McHale looks to get Cleveland back on top, but Juwann Oldman blocks the shot. Purvis Short hits a lay-up and the Celtics regain control with 2:19 left, 99-97. Randy Smith misses a jumper and Boston is in complete control.

Purvis Short takes a couple of possessions and plays somewhat crazily, missing shots and then missing a three-pointer. Short does get his own rebound and finds Bird. Bird scores with 41 seconds left to put Boston up four. Jim Paxson hits a quick jumper to get Cleveland back to within two. Randy Smith steals the ball from Gus Williams, and this gives Cleveland a chance to tie or take the lead. Jim Paxson though gets trapped, and Purvis Short grabs the ball from his hands. The Cavs never get the ball again as the Celtics hold onto win. The Cavs miss out on a golden opportunity to take one in Boston.

CELTICS 101, Cavaliers 99 (Celtics lead 1-0)

Gus Williams: 8 PTS, 5 REB, 10 AST

Game 2 - #8 San Diego Clippers at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 1-0)

The Clippers did a bit better, but the Lakers were just slightly better throughout the game as LA took a 2-0 series lead. Rookie Doc Rivers did what he could, dropping 20 points, but Magic was in complete control with 16 points and 13 assists. Bernard King (35 points, 15/20 FG) feasted on rookie Paul Thompson and that was that. Lakers will look for the sweep in San Diego.

LAKERS 112, Clippers 101 (Lakers lead 2-0)

Clippers Stats
Joe Barry Carroll: 18 PTS, 7/11 FG
Doc Rivers: 20 PTS, 4 AST, 7/12 FG, 3/5 3P

Game 2 - #5 Salt Lake Stallions at #4 Golden State Warriors (Warriors lead 1-0)

A wild second quarter where the Warriors scored 46 powered Golden State to a 2-0 lead. The Warriors had seven players score in double-digits, led by Chocolate Thunder, who had a 19-13. Adrian Dantley scored 28 for Salt Lake, who now need to win three straight to avoid another disappointing post-season.

WARRIORS 118, Stallions 106 (Warriors lead 2-0)

Stallions Stats
Adrian Dantley: 28 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST, 8/14 FG

Quintin Dailey: 16 PTS, 3 AST

Game 2 - #7 Phoenix Suns at #2 Dallas Mavericks (Mavericks lead 1-0)

Ralph Sampson
showed off his elite talent as none of the Sun big men had any answer for him. Sampson went off for 37, powering Dallas to a 2-0 lead. Clyde Drexler played well with 21 points, but that wasn’t nearly enough. The Suns had some reasons to be optimistic in this series, but that has quickly disappeared as they will look to avoid being swept.

MAVERICKS 124, Suns 103 (Mavericks lead 2-0)

Suns Stats
Clyde Drexler: 21 PTS, 1 STL, 1 BLK, 7/13 FG
Craig Hodges: 20 PTS

Game 2 - #6 San Antonio Spurs at #3 Seattle Supersonics (Supersonics lead 1-0)

This Iceman vs. Aguirre duel resulted in a close game coming into the fourth, where San Antonio showed some of that Championship heart to win on the road. San Antonio tied the series up behind Ice’s 33 and Campy Russell’s 20-4-4-4. Midseason acquisition Brad Davis also had 19. The Sonics were led by Aguirre and his 31 points, but he didn’t quite get enough from everyone else to go toe-to-toe with the Spurs late. Seattle will need to find a win in San Antonio.

Spurs 124, SUPERSONICS 115 (Series tied 1-1)

Spurs Stats
George Gervin: 33 PTS, 5 REB, 10/18 FG
Campy Russell: 20 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST, 4 STL

Game 2 - #8 Philadelphia 76ers at #1 New Jersey Nets (Nets lead 1-0)

This is a complete mismatch. The Nets blew out the Sixers again. They led 62-40 at the half and never looked back. Sidney Moncrief made up for his lackluster Game 1 with a monster 30-9 on just 13 shots and Moses and Cliff Robinson grabbed 27 boards total. The Sixers just couldn’t get anything going, with Dr. J leading the way with just 15.

NETS 109, 76ers 86 (Nets lead 2-0)

Sixers Stats
Julius Erving: 15 PTS, 7 REB

Nets Stats
Sidney Moncrief: 30 PTS, 9 REB, 11/13 FG

Game 2 - #5 Indiana Pacers at #4 New York Knicks (Knicks lead 1-0)

The Knicks defense was in complete control in Game 2, holding the Pacers to 33.7% shooting and just 84 points. Mark Eaton and Tree Rollins blocked 10 shots and completely controlled the paint. With David Thompson in foul trouble, Micheal Ray Richardson was once again in complete control, putting up a 24-11-13 with 3 steals. Knicks look to finish off the Pacers in Indiana, but if Indiana is anything like last year’s team they will be hard to put an end to.

KNICKS 106, Pacers 84 (Knicks lead 2-0)

Pacers Stats
Billy Knight: 19 PTS, 8 REB
Otis Birdsong: 15 PTS

Knicks Stats
Micheal Ray Richardson: 24 PTS, 11 REB, 13 AST, 3 STL, 11/16 FG

Game 2 - #7 Detroit Pistons at #2 Chicago Bulls (Bulls lead 1-0)

Tom Chambers
was unstoppable again, and this time it was enough to get Detroit an upset in Chicago. The Bulls led the whole way, but Chambers’ 37 powered the Pistons to a huge 14 point advantage in the fourth quarter, leaving Chicago stunned. The Bulls had some good performances, and it looked like they had things well in hand. Chambers outdueled Terry Cummings, who had 27. Dominique had another 20, but Dennis Johnson woke up with 26 himself. ‘Nique will need to step up or Detroit will make history as a #7 seed winning a playoff series in the first season that 16 teams make the playoffs.

Pistons 119, BULLS 113 (Series tied 1-1)

Pistons Stats
Tom Chambers: 37 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST, 14/21 FG, 2/3 3P

Game 3 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #8 San Diego Clippers (Lakers lead 2-0)

The Clippers made it a game down the stretch, even coming with-in two points several times in the fourth, but the Lakers held on to finish off the Clippers and advance to the second round. The Clippers had some early hope this season to make some strides, only to stumble and nearly miss the playoffs outright. Magic finished off the Clippers with a 16-9-10, as Bernard King dropped 28. The Clippers have a lot of questions to figure out this off-season, and their time in San Diego looks numbered.

Game 3 - #4 Golden State Warriors at #5 Salt Lake Stallions (Warriors lead 2-0)

The Warriors looked to have the Stallions down and beaten, but with 2:40 remaining the Stallions were within four, down 99-95. After two fouls and three made free throws by Reggie Theus later, the Stallions were within one. Orlando Woolridge would lose the ball, giving the Stallions a chance to take the lead and survive. Theus looked to really swing the momentum with a thunderous jam to take the lead, but Al Wood fouled him hard on the way up. Theus took a deep breath and dropped in both free throws, putting Salt Lake up 100-99 with just two minutes left.

The Stallions held on until Chocolate Thunder, Darryl Dawkins, having a great game, gets a jam to put Golden State back up 101-100. Reggie Theus turns the ball over on the other end, but Dawkins misses a shot that could have closed the game. Theus, basically a one-man show at this point, gets a lay-up with 48 seconds to put Salt Lake back up 102-101 with just 48 seconds left. Golden State can’t respond, and Theus would add two more free throws to make it 104-101, which ends up being the final. Reggie Theus scored the last nine Stallion points to carry their team to a season-saving Game 3 win.

STALLIONS 104, Warriors 101 (Warriors lead 2-1)

Game 3 - #2 Dallas Mavericks at #7 Phoenix Suns (Mavericks lead 2-0)

Phoenix gets on the board with an impressive defensive performance, holding the Mavericks to 36.9% FG and forcing 20 turnovers. They were able to survive two strong performances from Ralph Sampson and James Worthy, although Isiah Thomas struggled big time (4/13 FG, 7 TO). The Suns didn’t score big themselves, but the defensive effort and the fact that while no one scored more than 15, they had eight players score at least 8, was enough to get to Game 4.

SUNS 95, Mavericks 90 (Mavericks lead 2-1)

Mavericks Stats
Ralph Sampson: 21 PTS, 8 REB, 9/15 FG
James Worthy: 28 PTS, 9 REB, 9/16 FG, 10/12 FT

Game 3 - #3 Seattle Supersonics at #6 San Antonio Spurs (Series tied 1-1)

The Spurs blitzed the Sonics, taking Game 3 and putting the Sonic season in jeopardy. Brad Davis came through huge for San Antonio with 28 as Ice dropped 26 himself. The Sonics need to find a way to stop both of them on the road, or Seattle, full of hope after a really strong second half of the season, will be disappointingly eliminated from the playoffs in Round 1.

SPURS 112, Supersonics 100 (Spurs lead 2-1)

Game 3 - #1 New Jersey Nets at #8 Philadelphia 76ers (Nets lead 2-0)

This was never happening for the Sixers. While Philly was able to hold the Nets to a rough shooting night (Moses: 5/24), Philly just had nothing on offense to throw at the #1 seeded Nets. Even when Robert Parish returns next season, the Sixers have a lot of soul searching to do as it feels the franchise may finally be facing a rebuild. What does that mean for Julius Erving? The Nets will face either the Knicks or Pacers in Round 2.

Game 3 - #2 Chicago Bulls at #7 Detroit Pistons (Series tied 1-1)

Game 3 was a surprising complete disaster for Tom Chambers. After dropping two straight 35+ point games in Chicago, it was thought Chambers would be the key to Detroit holding home court and winning the series. Chambers played 14 minutes, committing fouls everywhere (he fouled out) as the Bulls retook control. Dominique Wilkins finally came up big with a 25 point night and Dennis Johnson was forced to carry the scoring load. DJ took 28 shots, only scoring 21 points. The Bulls now have a chance to end the series before it even gets back to Chicago as Detroit looks at yet another opportunity missed.

Game 3 - #3 Boston Celtics at #6 Cleveland Cavaliers (Celtics lead 2-0)

Some thought of the Cavaliers as a paper #1 seed for most of the season and justified their opinions when they fell to 6th and fell 0-2 in this series. The Cavaliers made a point in Game 3, completely blowing out the Celtics by almost 50 points. Nothing went the defending NBA Champions’ way. Kevin McHale dominated all night, scoring 30 with 11 rebounds and 5 blocks. The Cavs will need to repeat the performance to get to a deciding Game 5.

Game 4 - #3 Seattle Supersonics at #6 San Antonio Spurs (Spurs lead 2-1)

This one was a nail-biter throughout the entire game. The Spurs were up 5 with 2:06 left, up 109-104. Ray Williams scores for Seattle. Brad Davis hits two free throws to make it 111-106, but Jack Sikma scores to make it 111-108. Maurice Lucas intercepts a James Silas pass to Swen Nater, and Ray Williams scores again, bringing the Sonics to within one, 111-110. 1:15 left.

San Antonio coughs up the ball again as Louis Orr comes up with Marvin Webster’s pass. With just 47 seconds left, Nater sends Sikma to the line. Sikma makes them both, giving the Sonics the lead 112-111! Ice takes it himself, but he misses a shot. Marvin Webster grabs the offensive board and the Spurs run down the block. They give it to Gervin again, and this time Gervin crosses up Mark Aguirre and hits a lay-up with two seconds left to give the Spurs a 113-112 lead! After the timeout, Aguirre gets the ball to Sikma, who misses the turnaround! The Spurs upset the Sonics and will face their cross-state rival Dallas. This is a shocking and disappointing ending for the Sonics, who thought they could surprise the Lakers in the West this year.

Game 4 - #4 New York Knicks at #5 Indiana Pacers (Knicks lead 2-1)

The offense came out as we got a Skywalker-English duel. Thompson scored 43, but Alex English’s 35 was enough to lead the Pacers to a Game 4 win and force a deciding Game 5. While Micheal Ray had 17 assists, he shot 3 for 18, hurting the Knicks offense overall. This result puts both the Knicks and Pacers in situations that were similar to last year. It was a gritty defensive battle, but the Pistons got by Chicago behind Tom Chambers’ 19 points, which led all scorers. The Bulls struggled to score all game, with Dominique and Vinnie Johnson combined for 7/32 FG. The Pistons have a chance to shock the Bulls in a deciding Game 5.

Bulls Stats
Alvan Adams: 17 PTS, 7/9 FG
Terry Cummings: 13 PTS, 9 REB

Game 4 - #3 Boston Celtics at #6 Cleveland Cavaliers (Celtics lead 2-1)

The Cavs refused to go down easily.

With 1:39 left they led 103-102. Purvis Short tries to score but fails. The offensive rebound is grabbed by Juwann Oldham, who gets fouled on the way up. Oldham hits two of the biggest free throws of his career, putting the Celtics up 104-103. Kevin McHale and Rolando Blackman try to find a shot, but it ends up in the hands of Randy Smith…who drills a jumper with 43 seconds left, giving the Cavs back the lead! Purvis Short can’t respond, and Jim Paxson makes a steal after Oldham grabs another board. Randy Smith hits another free throw to make it 106-104 with just 4 seconds left. The Celtics look for Larry Bird, but it’s Gus Williams who takes the potential game tying shot…but it misses. Purvis Short almost tips in the basket but it rims out…and the Cavs make another statement, forcing Game 5.

Game 5 - #5 Salt Lake Stallions at #4 Golden State Warriors (Series tied 2-2)

The Warriors took a big lead in the first, only for the Stallions to come back and make it a close game. Golden State and Salt Lake traded baskets until late in the 4th. Adrian Dantley hit a jumper with 3:31 remaining, putting the Stallions up 97-95. From this point forward, each team strengthened up defensively, not giving an inch as their seasons were on the line. It took a minute for Phil Smith to score tie the game up for the Warriors. Each team continued to miss thanks to the opposing defense, until Golden State’s Orlando Woolridge hit short jumper to go up 99-97 with a minute left.

And that was it.

The Stallions tried, feeding Reggie Theus and Adrian Dantley, two excellent scorers to put the Stallion season on the line. But neither can make anything happen, and the Warriors held on to advance to the Semis to face the Lakers. While the Stallions were a good story last season, coming up short here has to be a disappointment. The Roundfield, Theus, Dantley trio are locked into big contracts for the next four years, but they’ll need to add something to get over the hump.

WARRIORS 99, Stallions 97 (Warriors win 3-2)

Stallions Stats
Adrian Dantley: 29 PTS, 6 REB, 4 AST
Reggie Theus: 26 PTS, 5 REB, 6 AST
Dan Roundfield: 14 PTS, 12 REB

Game 5 - #5 Indiana Pacers at #4 New York Knicks (Series tied 2-2)

This was a game where the turnover battle determined the winner.

The Knicks avoided blowing a 2-0 lead for the second straight victory by winning the decisive Game 5 in New York. The Knicks forced 21 turnovers and only lost the ball 11 times. This allowed the Knicks to shoot the ball 100 times, and the Pacers just couldn’t keep up. David Thompson wasn’t efficient, shooting 9/32 for 23 points, and Micheal Ray was also 5/20. But Gerald Henderson’s 5 steals kept giving New York extra chances to win the game. Alex English led the Pacers with 26, but Otis Birdsong had 7 turnovers himself. Indiana had a great regular season, but they end up falling short in a season where they had title aspirations. The Knicks will take on their cross river rivals, the Nets, in Round 2.

KNICKS 104, Pacers 93 (Knicks win 3-2)

Pacers Stats
Alex English: 26 PTS, 14 REB, 6 AST, 2 BLK
Michael Cooper: 25 PTS, 8 REB, 6 AST

Knicks Stats

Mark Eaton: 7 PTS, 7 REB, 6 BLK

Game 5 - #7 Detroit Pistons at #2 Chicago Bulls (Series tied 2-2)

The Pistons had the upper hand, leading 61-48 at halftime, but the Bulls came back strong in the third. Dominique had a strong game, and we ended up tied with 3 minutes to go, 92-92.

‘Nique drives right by DJ for a layup to put the Bulls back up 94-92. DJ misses, and the Bulls look to take complete control. Vinnie Johnson misses and Detroit has a chance to tie. Alvan Adams sends his old rival Dennis Johnson to the line with 1:35 to go. DJ shockingly misses both, but ‘Nique loses the ball on the other end, giving the Pistons another chance to tie or lead. DJ misses again, and the Bulls have control with a minute left.

‘Nique tries to slam it home to finish the Pistons, but Fat Lever fouls him and ‘Nique can’t complete the dunk. ‘Nique hits both free throws, making it a four point game, 96-92. Chambers quickly scorers, but the Pistons can’t get the ball back, and the Bulls hold onto to beat Detroit. A tough ending for the Pistons, but they may be just a piece away from contending. The Bulls avoid disaster, but await a the tough challenge of either division rival Cleveland or defending NBA Champion Boston.

BULLS 96, Pistons 94 (Bulls win 3-2)

Pistons Stats
Tom Chambers: 19 PTS, 5 REB, 1 STL, 1 BLK
Dennis Johnson: 15 PTS, 9 REB, 4 AST, 3 STL

Johnny Moore: 11 PTS, 4 REB, 7 AST, 5 STL

Game 5 - #6 Cleveland Cavaliers at #3 Boston Celtics (Series tied 2-2)

It was a great season for the Cavs, but when push came to shove, the 2x MVP of the league came up big and won the series. Larry Bird had 36 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals and the Cavs had nothing for him. McHale had a 22-11, and Cleveland overall put on a respectful performance, but they’re still at least a year away. Boston will go ahead to take on the young Bulls. The Cavs have basically one job this off-season, make sure they resign Kevin McHale.

CELTICS 112, Cavaliers 98 (Celtics win 3-2)

Cavaliers Stats
Kevin McHale: 22 PTS, 11 REB, 2 STL, 2 BLK
Rolando Blackman: 20 PTS, 8 REB, 2 STL
Jim Paxson: 20 PTS, 4 AST, 5 BLK

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 36 PTS, 11 REB, 5 AST, 3 STL, 15/26 FG

Series Preview
The Warriors likely consider this season a victory already as they’ve advanced to the second round of the playoffs. There’s no real argument to say they’ll beat the Lakers in a seven-game series, and based on the season results it’ll be unlikely they even win a game. Their only real chance will be if Darryl Dawkins can dominate the center position.

Series Preview
A rematch from the first round of last year’s playoffs. The Spurs showed some of that championship heart by upsetting the Sonics in Round 1 behind George Gervin and Brad Davis’s big performances. Dallas though is a totally different beast than last season. Marvin Webster and Swen Nater will have their hands full trying to slow down Ralph Sampson and James Worthy, and even Brad Davis will have to deal with Isiah. The Spurs showed they can beat Dallas with Davis, winning two games in San Antonio in March. It should be Dallas’s series, but you can never count out a former champion.

Series Preview
It’s a New York vs. New Jersey battle (as dubbed the Phil Jackson series, as Nets coach Jackson played for both). The Nets securing homecourt advantage may prove to be important in the series, as the Knicks have played the Nets very well this season, winning the season series 3-1. The Knicks seem to match up well against the Nets, as they can throw defensive stalwarts Mark Eaton and Tree Rollins at Moses Malone and Cliff Robinson. Dudley Bradley will have his hands full with David Thompson as well. On the flipside, Sidney Moncrief got the better of Micheal Ray Richardson in last year’s Bucks-Knicks series. This is a series that can go in any way.

Series Preview
Now this is the money match. Bird vs. ‘Nique. The defending NBA Champion Celtics and the Bulls both survived scares in the first round, with both star players coming through in the clutch. The Celtics are looking for their fourth straight NBA Finals berth, but the Bulls will be no walk in the park. The Bulls are solid up-and-down, with Alvan Adams providing veteran championship experience, Terry Cummings and ‘Nique shouldering the scoring load, and Vinnie Johnson and Johnny Moore making plays all over the court. Boston’s Bird of course won his second straight MVP and could win the series on his own, but he’ll likely need some real help from Purvis Short and/or Gus Williams to get it done. This should be a great one.

(All Box Scores to be added after the end of the season)

Game 1 - #4 Golden State Warriors at #1 Los Angeles Lakers

Golden State put up a good fight, but the Magic man kept the Laker team running to the tune of 127 points in a Game 1 shootout win. Four players on the Lakers scored at least 22 points, and even Kareem looked decent with 14. If there’s a silver lining for the Warriors, it’s that they played LA tough on the road and as a result, there’s some hope that they can steal Game 2.

LAKERS 127, Warriors 119 (Lakers lead 1-0)

Warriors Stats
Darryl Dawkins: 18 PTS, 10 REB, 5 AST

Game 1 - #6 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Dallas Mavericks

James Worthy
was absolutely unstoppable as the Mavericks took down Game 1 against San Antonio. Worthy’s 41 was unmatched by anyone on the Spurs. San Antonio showed they can score, they put up 114, but the defense will need some work if they are to have any chance in this series. George Gervin led SA with 23.

Game 1 - #4 New York Knicks at #1 New Jersey Nets

The Knicks survived a fantastic performance from Sidney Moncrief (23-9-7-9) and a big game from Calvin Natt (33 points) to take Game 1 in New Jersey. Mark Eaton and Tree Rollins shut down Cliff Robinson and more importantly, Moses Malone (6/26 FG). Eaton and Rollins grabbed 22 boards and blocked 10 shots, and the Nets couldn’t find a scoring flow. David Thompson led the Knicks with 29. The #1 seeded Nets now need to find their own road win in order to win the series.

Game 1 - #3 Boston Celtics at #2 Chicago Bulls

In perhaps a surprising result, the Bulls completely ran over the Celtics in Game 1 in Chicago. Larry Bird struggled to scorer against Dominique, and the Celtics offense never got going. ‘Nique led Chicago with 23 as no Celtic reached 17. The defending NBA Champions now have an uphill battle if they are going to make it to the Finals for a fourth straight time.

BULLS 121, Celtics 93 (Bulls lead 1-0)

Game 2 - #4 Golden State Warriors at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 1-0)

Hope was quickly dashed in Game 2 as the Lakers dominated to take a 2-0 lead. The Lakers went up 36-18 in the first and the game was never close. Magic put together another triple-double (16-10-10) while Bernard King scored 29. As we head up the coastline, the Warriors need to figure out something or their promising season will come to an end.

Game 2 - #6 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Dallas Mavericks (Mavericks lead 1-0)

With Iceman frozen and Isiah going off, the Spurs bench came alive to shock the Mavericks in the fourth quarter. Paul Westphal, a mere bench player this season but one tons of playoff experience came alive to even the series 1-1. James Worthy came up big again with 27 and 16, and Isiah scored 29 and had 8 steals…but none of it was enough to offset the performance of the bench. The SA bench scored 65 points, outscoring the Dallas bench by 38.

Spurs 120, MAVERICKS 112 (Series tied 1-1)

Spurs Stats

Paul Westphal: 17 PTS, 5 AST
Brad Davis: 17 PTS, 10 AST
Wes Matthews: 18 PTS, 7/9 FG

Game 2 - #4 New York Knicks at #1 New Jersey Nets (Knicks lead 1-0)

It was déjà vu as the Knicks shut down Moses (5/18 FG) and Cliff Robinson (1/9 FG), survived Moses’s 26 boards and Calvin Natt’s 39 and rallied behind David Thompson’s 33 to win a second straight road game from the Nets. The Nets now find themselves in a lot of trouble as they head across the river to Madison Square Garden needing a miracle to get back into this series.

Knicks 115, NETS 107 (Knicks lead 2-0)

Knicks Stats
David Thompson: 33 PTS, 6 REB, 14/20 FG
Micheal Ray Richardson: 12 PTS, 6 REB, 13 AST, 4/7 FG

Despite getting blown out in Game 1, Larry Bird and the Celtics came out strong and buried the hometown Bulls in Game 2. Boston stormed to a 63-42 lead, as Bird was masterful on the glass and Gus Williams got hot. ‘Nique scored 27 and tried to bring Chicago back, but it wasn’t nearly enough. Looking like they would be in a lot of trouble after Game 1, Boston suddenly has homecourt advantage in a best-of-five that starts in Boston.

Celtics 104, BULLS 96 (Series tied 1-1)

Celtics Stats
Gus Williams: 32 PTS, 8 AST
Larry Bird: 22 PTS, 16 REB, 7 AST

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 27 PTS, 8 REB
Alvan Adams: 20 PTS, 6 REB, 4 STL, 2 BLK

Game 3 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #4 Golden State Warriors (Lakers lead 2-0)

This was probably the Warriors’ best chance to snag a win from LA. Down only 6 heading into the fourth, the Lakers held Golden State to 12 points and cruised toa 3-0 lead. Magic continued to be unstoppable in this series, going for a 22-8-13. Darryl Dawkins had a strong game with 26, but the Warriors just don’t have the firepower to go basket for basket with the Lakers for four quarters. Lakers look to sweep in Game 4.

Lakers 127, WARRIORS 107 (Lakers lead 3-0)

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 22 PTS, 8 REB, 13 AST, 9/13 FG
Bernard King: 38 PTS, 7 REB, 14/24 FG

Warriors Stats
Darryl Dawkins: 26 PTS, 6 REB, 4 BLK, 12/15 FG
Phil Smith: 16 PTS, 6 AST

Game 3 - #2 Dallas Mavericks at #6 San Antonio Spurs (Series tied 1-1)

Uh-oh, somebody stop the Spurs! The Spurs were unstoppable, scoring at least 33 points in each quarter and scoring 42 in the third, as they took the series lead against Dallas. The bench was strong again, but George Gervin made sure to lead the way with time with 35 points. What looked to be a sure Conference Title berth for the Mavericks is suddenly in a lot of jeopardy as they don’t seem to have a way to slow down San Antonio’s scoring.

SPURS 141, Mavericks 120 (Spurs lead 2-1)

Mavericks Stats
James Worthy: 24 PTS, 11/17 FG
Isiah Thomas: 25 PTS, 4 REB, 4 AST, 2 STL, 9/15 FG

Brad Davis: 16 PTS, 5 AST, 7/9 FG

Game 3 - #1 New Jersey Nets at #4 New York Knicks (Knicks lead 2-0)

The Nets were able to put together a big 38 point first quarter, but the Knicks crawled their way back. Sidney Moncrief, who has made a fool of Micheal Ray in this game, hits two free throws to make it 94-93 Nets with just 3:31 to go. Moses grabs a rebound off a Mike Glenn miss and pushes the pace, but Micheal Ray forces a turnover from Dudley Bradley. Skywalker tries to give the Knicks the lead, but he misses and the Squid corrals the rebound.

Thompson later tries to beat the stout Nets defense again, and Moses leaves Mark Eaton open for a dunk! Knicks lead 95-94 with 2:16 to play. The Nets also try to figure out how to squeeze another basket against the Knicks, and Moses ends up getting called for an illegal screen. The Nets force Tree Rollins to throw the ball into the 6th row of the Garden to get the ball back and Moncrief makes something happen, getting to the line. Moncrief hits both free throws and it’s 96-95 Nets.

Unfortunately, play as to be stopped as Calvin Natt’s leg bends in a gruesome way. This is an awful situation for the Nets and they have to hope the injury isn’t nearly as bad as it looked. Nets do force a Knicks miss and waste all 24 seconds on the shot clock, literally. Nets go into a full court press and the referee calls a quick foul on Cliff Robinson, which enrages coach Phil Jackson. Mike Glenn makes both free throws and the Knicks are up 98-97! With 21 seconds left the Nets need a basket. Moncrief looks to take it himself and the Knicks crowd around him…allowing him to find Moses for the easy layup with just a second on the clock, giving the Nets the lead! Micheal Ray gets a last second shot up after a timeout, but it airballs and the Nets take one at MSG!

Unfortunately, it was discovered that Calvin Natt will miss the rest of the series and likely the playoffs with a torn ligament.

Nets 98, KNICKS 97 (Knicks lead 2-1)

Mark Eaton: 4 PTS, 9 REB, 3 AST, 2 STL, 5 BLK

Game 3 - #2 Chicago Bulls at #3 Boston Celtics (Series tied 1-1)

The Celtics pulled away in the fourth to take the lead in this Semi-Final series 2-1. Larry Bird was incredible again with a 25-8-14 as Dominique Wilkins was nowhere to be seen. Alvan Adams had a monster 36 point game wasted here. Gus added a 24-10. The Bulls will need to find a way to win in Boston or they’ll have to beat Bird and co. three straight times, which isn’t very likely.

CELTICS 119, Bulls 113 (Celtics lead 2-1)

Bulls Stats
Alvan Adams: 36 PTS, 6 REB, 17/26 FG
Vinnie Johnson: 11 PTS, 11 REB, 4 AST

Game 4 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #4 Golden State Warriors (Lakers lead 3-0)

Well would you look at that. Despite monster games from Magic and Bernard, the Warriors pulled off a victory against the Lakers thanks to a Darryl Dawkins triple-double (22-10-10). John Long added 24 for the Warriors. The Lakers will take another shot at eliminating Golden State back in LA.

WARRIORS 125, Lakers 116 (Lakers lead 3-1)

Game 4 - #2 Dallas Mavericks at #6 San Antonio Spurs (Spurs lead 2-1)

Neither team brought the defense today. Sampson, Isiah, Worthy and Ice all went off, leading to a close game deep in the fourth quarter.

Kiki Vandeweghe hits a jumper to tie the game at 120 with 1:19 to go. Both teams are able to stop one another, until the rookie, Sampson, hits a big lay-up to put the Mavericks up 2 with 20 seconds left! Brad Davis finds Ice, but he can’t find a shot and he has to give it up. James Silas ties the game with a jumper from the right wing! Dallas misses a potential winner, and we go to overtime!

In what is arguably a must-win game for the Mavericks…the Spurs got hot late in OT, and with 40 seconds left Dallas was down 133-128. Ice would steal an awful pass from Worthy, and the Spurs would make it 135-128. The Mavericks completely fell apart in overtime, and the Spurs now have the series well in hand, up 3-1.

SPURS 139, Mavericks 133 (OT) (Spurs lead 3-1)

Mavericks Stats
Ralph Sampson: 30 PTS, 10 REB, 12/18 FG
Isiah Thomas: 30 PTS, 7 REB, 14 AST, 2 STL
James Worthy: 26 PTS, 15 REB, 3 STL, 5 BLK

Spurs Stats
George Gervin: 40 PTS, 8 REB, 6 STL
Brad Davis: 29 PTS, 3 REB, 5 AST, 3 STL

Game 4 - #1 New Jersey Nets at #4 New York Knicks (Knicks lead 2-1)

The Nets couldn’t build on the momentum they gained from Game 3, falling behind 50-35 at halftime and never making up any ground. Without Calvin Natt and with Moses still struggling from the field thanks to the Eaton-Tree combo, the Nets just couldn’t find the points to keep up with New York. The Knicks had three 20+ point scorers, Thompson, Glenn and Micheal Ray, and the Knicks cruised to the first home win of the series. They will look to beat the Nets in New Jersey to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.

KNICKS 104, Nets 82 (Knicks lead 3-1)

Nets Stats
Moses Malone: 16 PTS, 17 REB
Cliff Robinson: 19 PTS, 9 REB, 4 STL

Knicks Stats
David Thompson: 22 PTS, 10/15 FG

Micheal Ray Richardson: 21 PTS, 9 AST

Game 4 - #2 Chicago Bulls at #3 Boston Celtics (Celtics lead 2-1)

In perhaps the biggest game in many of the careers of the Bulls, Chicago overcame the Boston Garden behind “Microwave” Vinnie Johnson’s 23 points. ‘Nique added 20, and no one for Boston really got going as Bird led with 17 on 7/21 FG. Chicago put together a strong 55 point second half that deflated the Boston fans. The Bulls and Celtics are now left in a best-of-three, which the Bulls taking back homecourt.

Bulls 104, CELTICS 95 (Series tied 2-2)

Game 5 - #4 Golden State Warriors at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 3-1)

It looked like a shootout early, but the Lakers poured 66 second half points and the Warriors just couldn’t keep up. Darryl Dawkins went down swinging with a 34-14, but Bernard King had 41 and Magic had an 18-15. The Lakers move on to their fourth straight Western Conference Finals. The Warriors have something to build on, but they’ll need a piece or two to truly be considered a contender.

LAKERS 128, Warriors 112 (Lakers win 4-1)

Warriors Stats
Darryl Dawkins: 34 PTS, 14 REB, 2 BLK, 14/21 FG
Terry Tyler: 18 PTS, 5 REB

Game 5 - #6 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Dallas Mavericks (Spurs lead 3-1)

The Mavericks’ first step in getting back into this series was to win Game 5 at home. While the points were flying all over the place again, the Mavericks proved to be too much for San Antonio this time around. Worthy had 38 and Isiah had 31 as Ice couldn’t keep up with his 33. The Mavericks now need to find a win in San Antonio to force a deciding Game 7.

MAVERICKS 134, Spurs 126 (Spurs lead 3-2)

Game 5 - #4 New York Knicks at #1 New Jersey Nets (Knicks lead 3-1)

The Nets were able to defend homecourt, giving themselves a chance in the series. Moses managed 26 points, somewhat breaking his slump against Eaton and Tree. Cliff Robinson also came alive to score 21. David Thompson had another big scoring night, but the Knicks need to give him just a little more in Game 6 to ensure the Nets don’t get back in the series. The Knicks had their chances, as they led 84-76 heading into the fourth, but the Nets were able to show some resilience. Game 6 is back in MSG.

NETS 113, Knicks 105 (Knicks lead 3-2)

Game 5 - #3 Boston Celtics at #2 Chicago Bulls (Series tied 2-2)

‘Nique
and Bird went toe-to-toe, basket-for-basket, but a super strong fourth quarter powered the Bulls to a crucial Game 5 victory. The Celtics brought a small lead into the fourth but Chicago burst out for 41 points as Chicago Stadium was rocking! The Celtics Finals streak is now on the line, as they need to win Game 6 and come back to Chicago Stadium for Game 7 as well. ‘Nique’s 32 matched Bird’s 33. The Celtics were really good, but the Bulls were just a bit better.

BULLS 120, Celtics 110 (Bulls lead 3-2)

Celtics Stats
Larry Bird: 33 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST, 5/13 3P

Game 6 - #2 Dallas Mavericks at #6 San Antonio Spurs (Spurs lead 3-2)

It took six games, but the Mavericks finally found a way to slow down the Spurs. Isiah and Ron Lee combined for 11 steals while Ralph Sampson went for an unstoppable 32 points, leading Dallas to a huge road victory and forcing a deciding Game 7. George Gervin scored 24 on 24 shots, and really no one else came alive unlike earlier in the series. Without a doubt, Game 7 will be the biggest game in the Mavericks’ franchise history, while it also represents perhaps the last chance for these Spurs to contend for a NBA title.

Mavericks 107, SPURS 99 (Series tied 3-3)

Mavericks Stats
Ralph Sampson: 32 PTS, 7 REB, 2 STL
Isiah Thomas: 19 PTS, 8 REB, 11 AST, 6 STL

Spurs Stats
George Gervin: 24 PTS

Game 6 - #1 New Jersey Nets at #4 New York Knicks (Knicks lead 3-2)

The Knicks strategy to shut down Moses worked again, as Moses went for 3/20 FG in a game where they needed to find scoring. Sidney Moncrief was responsible for 8 turnovers, and the Nets couldn’t find enough points to overcome the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Mark Eaton and Tree Rollins blocked 9 shots, while Micheal Ray had 23 points, 7 rebounds, 15 assists and 5 steals, leading the Knicks to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Nets will go down as one of the best regular season teams not to make the Finals in history. With Moses turning 30 years old next year, one will wonder if the Nets will break the bank to keep him.

KNICKS 90, Nets 80 (Knicks win 4-2)

Nets Stats
Moses Malone: 14 PTS, 15 REB, 3 BLK, 3/20 FG

Game 7 - #6 San Antonio Spurs at #2 Dallas Mavericks (Series tied 3-3)

The Spurs had their chance, but Dallas came out strong and completed the 3-1 comeback. Dallas took a 33-19 lead through the first and never let San Antonio get back in it. George Gervin scored 24, not having another 40 in him. Isiah distributed the ball beautifully, as all of the big four for the mavericks scored at least 20. Dallas will go on to take on the Lakers as the Spurs wonder what their future looks like. Is this the last we’ve seen of Ice on a big playoff stage?

MAVERICKS 116, Spurs 101 (Mavericks win 4-3)

Game 7 - #3 Boston Celtics at #2 Chicago Bulls (Series tied 3-3)

Game 7 between the Bulls and Celtics will go down as one of the greatest playoff games in NBA history. The Bulls brought a small lead into the fourth, but Larry Bird and the Celtics made their way back. Bird hits a jumper from the free throw line, and we’re tied at 113 with 2:10 left.

The Bulls find a way to get the ball to Dominique. Wilkins drives and pulls up for a jumper, but it misses and the Celtics have a chance to take control. Purvis Short misses, and Cedric Maxwell can’t follow with the putback. ‘Nique and Terry Cummings try to find a good shot, but this results in Alvan Adams finding Johnny Moore for three…and he hits it! 116-113 Bulls! 1:01 left. Moore fouls Maxwell, and Maxwell hits two free throws to make it 116-115. Purvis Short gets a huge steal, but misses the quick shot. ‘Nique hits perhaps the biggest shot of his career so far with 34 seconds left, putting the Bulls up 118-115. Crafty Bird finds Short quickly with a crosscourt pass and Short scores, making it 118-117. The Celtics elect to foul and need to twice, eventually sending Vinnie Johnson to the line. Microwave hits them both and the Bulls are back up 120-117 with 17 seconds left. The Bulls do what they can to keep the ball out of Bird’s hands, but it ends up there anyway. Bird gets a good look at a three from the right wing…but it rims out! The Bulls grab the rebound and to many’s surprise, knock off the juggernaut Boston Celtics! This will go down as the Bird-‘Nique duel, as Bird went for 40 but Dominique stayed with him to score 37 himself.

Series Preview
This is one of those match-ups the fans have been asking for. The historic Laker franchise against the upstart Dallas Mavericks. Magic vs. Isiah. Worthy vs. King. Sampson vs. Kareem. In reality the Mavericks are probably a step behind the Lakers, but that’s why you play the games. The Mavericks best chance is to win shootouts against the Lakers (Dallas is 1st in PPG, LA 2nd) and to defend home court (Dallas: 35-6 at home). Still, this is a tall task as everything has went right in LA this season. This should be a tremendous match-up regardless, with the key obviously being Magic vs. Isiah.

The Eastern Conference Finals features another box office match-up. ‘Nique and Terry Cummings take on Skywalker Thompson and Micheal Ray Richardson. Due to record the Knicks have the home court (note: this is how it is in the game, probably a bug), but both teams were able to beat the other on the road during the regular season. In just their second year, ‘Nique and Cummings took down the juggernaut Celtics featuring MVP Larry Bird, now can they take the next step and make their first NBA Finals? Or will David Thompson return to his first NBA Finals since 1980, when he led the Nuggets there? For the Bulls to win, ‘Nique will need to outplay Thompson, as find a way through the New York brick wall of Mark Eaton and Tree Rollins. The Knicks will need to shut down the multitude of weapons the Bulls have in order to make it back to the NBA Finals for the first time in a decade.

Game 1 - #2 Dallas Mavericks at #1 Los Angeles Lakers

This one was a pure statement from Bernard King. King dropped 41 in Game 1 and was completely unstoppable all night as the Lakers blew out Dallas in Game 1. Magic only played 19 minutes, but found 12 points and 11 assists anyway. The Mavericks offense wasn’t horrible, led by James Worthy with 26, but they’ll need to do more to have a chance to beat LA.

LAKERS 130, Mavericks 107 (Lakers lead 1-0)

Mavericks Stats
James Worthy: 26 PTS, 12/20 FG
Isiah Thomas: 16 PTS, 12 AST

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 41 PTS, 13 REB, 6 AST, 2 STL
Magic Johnson: 12 PTS, 11 AST, 2 STL

***

Game 1 - #2 Chicago Bulls at #4 New York Knicks

The Knicks defense overwhelmed the Bulls in Game 1. With Alvan Adams and Terry Cummings struggling against the Eaton-Rollins wall (5/19 FG total) and Dominique Wilkins getting outplayed by David Thompson, the Knicks ran all over the Bulls. Micheal Ray Richardson added a 18-7-15, making Johnny Moore a total non-factor. Bulls will need to go back to the drawing board to find a split.

KNICKS 110, Bulls 82 (Knicks lead 1-0)

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 18 PTS, 4 REB

Knicks Stats
David Thompson: 29 PTS, 4 AST
Mike Glenn: 22 PTS, 4 REB
Micheal Ray Richardson: 18 PTS, 7 REB, 15 AST, 3 STL

***

Game 2 - #2 Dallas Mavericks at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 1-0)

Game 2 was closer as the Mavericks slowed Bernard a bit and James Worthy led all scorers…but Magic Johnson was out of this world and the Lakers pulled away in the 4th to go up 2-0 in the Western Conference Finals. Magic went for a 26-11-16, making Isiah look foolish for the second straight game. Dallas will have to hope to do better at home or this will be a quick series.

LAKERS 124, Dallas Mavericks 115 (Lakers lead 2-0)

Mavericks Stats
James Worthy: 28 PTS, 13 REB, 4 AST, 2 STL, 2 BLK
Kik Vandeweghe: 24 PTS, 3 REB, 4 AST
Isiah Thomas: 14 PTS, 8 REB

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 27 PTS, 9/15 FG
Magic Johnson: 26 PTS, 11 REB, 16 AST, 4 STL
Jamaal Wilkes: 20 PTS, 5 AST

***

Game 2 - #2 Chicago Bulls at #4 New York Knicks (Knicks lead 1-0)

The Bulls played better, but it was more of the same in Game 2. David Thompson went off for 40 against ‘Nique’s 16 and Micheal Ray went completely unchecked as the Knicks went up 2-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Bulls need ‘Nique to go off in Chicago or this will be a very short series.

KNICKS 111, Bulls 97 (Knicks lead 2-0)

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 16 PTS
Terry Cummings: 20 PTS, 7 REB
Vinnie Johnson: 21 PTS, 5 REB, 3 STL

Knicks Stats
David Thompson: 40 PTS, 7 REB
Mark Eaton: 4 PTS, 6 REB, 5 BLK
Tree Rollins: 10 PTS, 12 REB, 3 BLK
Micheal Ray Richardson: 21 PTS, 8 REB, 19 AST, 7 STL

Game 3 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #2 Dallas Mavericks (Lakers lead 2-0)

Without a doubt, Game 3 of the 1984 Western Conference Finals will go down as one of the greatest of all-time.

James Worthy brings the Mavericks to within two after hitting two free throws (128-126 Lakers) with 3:16 left. Kareem shows that he can still make plays and finds a driving Bernard King for a layup to put the Lakers back up four. Worthy gets another great look, but rookie Rodney McCray makes a huge block, and Magic finds King to up 132-126 with 2:16 left. Kiki scores to keep Dallas in range, but the legendary Kareem gets to the foul line. Kareem hits one, and it’s 133-128 Lakers.

Worthy tries to get Dallas in striking range but misses…and grabs his own rebound. They move the ball around to Kiki but his three pointer rims out. Kiki gets his own board and the Lakers keep giving the Mavericks a chance to hang in there. Ralph Sampson, having his first monster game of the series, gets a thunderous jam on Kareem to cut the lead to three! King misses, and Sampson kinds Kiki for a layup and Dallas is only down one! Ron Lee swipes the ball from Buck Williams and finds Sampson running the floor. Another jam from Sampson gives Dallas the lead, 134-133 with just 54 seconds left!

The Lakers commit another turnover coming out of a timeout as Worthy steals from Jamaal Wilkes! Another break away for Dallas leads to a Kiki lay-up for the 136-133 lead! It’s a late 8-0 run for the Mavs! Ron Lee, trying to force another turnover, instead fouls King and Bernard heads to the line and drains both free throws. Isiah goes for a lay-up somewhat early in the shot clock, and the Lakers have 17 seconds to win the game. Magic takes it himself but can’t get to the rim thanks to Sampson…but he finds King! Everyone runs to King…allowing King to find Buck Williams under the basket as time expires! King gets the lay-up just in time, and the Lakers escape with a victory in Dallas, going up 3-0! The Lakers run off the court in victory as the Mavericks now face an insurmountable deficit. Worthy scored 50 for Dallas, but Bernard King stayed with him every step of the way, scoring 48 himself.

Lakers 137, MAVERICKS 136 (Lakers lead 3-0)

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 48 PTS, 4 REB, 3 AST
Magic Johnson: 22 PTS, 12 REB, 21 AST
Jamaal Wilkes: 18 PTS, 7 REB, 4 AST, 3 STL

Mavericks Stats
James Worthy: 50 PTS, 11 REB, 3 STL
Ralph Sampson: 37 PTS, 7 REB, 4 BLK
Isiah Thomas: 12 PTS, 11 AST

***

Game 3 - #4 New York Knicks at #2 Chicago Bulls (Knicks lead 2-0)

The Knicks backcourt absolutely laid waste to Chicago’s as Micheal Ray and Mike Glenn destroyed Vinnie Johnson and Johnny Moore. There wasn’t much going for the Bulls offense again. While Dominique scored 22, he hasn’t went off like he did against Boston and Chicago really needed him to. Eaton and Rollins blocked 8 shots total and while Alvan Adams scored 21, it look him 21 shots to do so. Knicks look to sweep in Chicago.

Knicks 97, BULLS 80 (Knicks lead 3-0)

Knicks Stats
David Thompson: 22 PTS, 5 REB, 3 AST, 9/12 FG
Mike Glenn: 21 PTS, 8 REB
Micheal Ray Richardson: 21 PTS, 9 REB, 15 AST, 4 STL
Mark Eaton: 4 PTS, 9 REB, 4 AST, 6 BLK
Tree Rollins: 12 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST, 2 BLK

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 22 PTS, 12 REB
Alvan Adams: 21 PTS, 4 REB

***

Game 4 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #2 Dallas Mavericks (Lakers lead 3-0)

A 73 point second half for the Lakers finished off the Mavericks. Magic Johnson was awesome again as Isiah never got going against him. Magic went off for a 38-12-12-6, offsetting Worthy’s 39. The Lakers return to the NBA Finals, likely against the Knicks, a rematch from 11 years prior (and for the 6th time overall).

Lakers 124, MAVERICKS 116 (Lakers win 4-0)

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 38 PTS, 12 REB, 12 AST, 6 STL
Bernard King: 21 PTS, 6 REB, 4 AST
Jamaal Wilkes: 23 PTS, 7 REB, 5 AST, 3 STL

Mavericks Stats
James Worthy: 39 PTS, 11 REB, 2 BLK, 15/23 FG
Isiah Thomas: 16 PTS, 5 AST
Ralph Sampson: 19 PTS, 5 REB, 9/15 FG

***

Game 4 - #4 New York Knicks at #2 Chicago Bulls (Knicks lead 3-0)

The Bulls finally showed up for Game 4. The Bulls are up one 102-101 with Johnny Moore at the line. Moore misses both though (receiving huge boos). Micheal Ray Richardson quickly crosses up Moore on the other end and the Knicks take the lead on his layup 103-102. Vinnie Johnson misses, and Tree Rollins dunks on Terry Cummings to put the Knicks up 105-104 with 52 seconds left.

‘Nique, with his first 30+ point game of the series, hits a jumper with 27 seconds to bring the Bulls within one. The Bulls elect to play defense, but never get the ball back. The lack of aggressiveness for Chicago at the end, combined with some huge missed free throws, cost Chicago any chance of staying alive. The Knicks will take on the Lakers in the Finals.

Knicks 105, BULLS 104 (Knicks win 4-0)

Knicks Stats
Micheal Ray Richardson: 33 PTS, 6 REB, 15 AST, 2 STL
David Thompson: 21 PTS, 7 REB
Gerald Henderson: 20 PTS, 4 AST

Bulls Stats
Dominique Wilkins: 35 PTS, 11 REB, 3 STL
Johnny Moore: 20 PTS, 14 AST
Alvan Adams: 17 PTS, 7 REB

#4 New York Knicks (59-23) vs. #1 Los Angeles Lakers (68-14)

Season Results

1/11 – LAKERS 102, Knicks 100

Series Preview
Other than Lakers-Celtics, no rivalry has more history than Lakers-Knicks. In the 50’s, the Knicks dropped two Finals to the Minneapolis Lakers. The Knicks famously got revenge in 1970, then beat the Lakers again in 1973 for their last championship. The Lakers beat the Knicks in ’72 for their last title. This year both the Lakers and Knicks feature one of the best scorers in the game (David Thompson for NY, Bernard King for LA) and one of the best two point guards in the league (Micheal Ray for NY and Magic for LA). While the Lakers boast some other scoring options in Buck Williams and Jamaal Wilkes, the Knicks counter with strong defensive pieces in Mark Eaton and Tree Rollins. On LA’s bench is Bill Cartwright, who was traded from New York for Rollins. This should go down as one of the all-time great Finals. It’s New York vs. Los Angeles, NY vs. LA, the 1984 NBA Finals!

(All Box Scores to be added after the end of the season)

Game 1 - #4 New York Knicks at #1 Los Angeles Lakers

LA was in complete control from the beginning. The Lakers stormed to a 65-50 lead by halftime and the Knicks couldn’t slow the Lakers down enough to get back into it. While David Thompson and Micheal Ray Richardson played well, Bernard King and Magic were better. The Lakers had one extra big scorer, as both Buck Williams and Jamaal Wilkes dropped 20+. Knicks will hope to split in LA in Game 2.

LAKERS 123, Knicks 108 (Lakers lead 1-0)

Knicks Stats
David Thompson: 23 PTS, 5 REB
Micheal Ray Richardson: 25 PTS, 13 AST, 6 STL
Mike Glenn: 21 PTS, 1 STL, 1 BLK

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 22 PTS, 8 REB, 19 AST, 3 STL, 9/12 FG
Bernard King: 32 PTS, 2 STL
Jamaal Wilkes: 24 PTS
Buck Williams: 20 PTS, 8 REB, 7/11 FG

***

Game 2 - #4 New York Knicks at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 1-0)

Game 2 was more of the same, as the Lakers dominated another first half, never allowing the Knicks a chance to get into the game. LA led 61-44 at the half and that was that. Skywalker and Micheal Ray once again showed up, but the Lakers had more firepower overall led by Bernard King’s 35. The only way the Knicks can win the title is on LA’s home floor now as they go down 0-2 heading across the country to New York.

LAKERS 127, New York Knicks 116 (Lakers lead 2-0)

Knicks Stats
Micheal Ray Richardson: 22 PTS, 7 REB, 18 AST, 2 STL
David Thompson: 34 PTS, 3 STL

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 35 PTS, 4 REB
Magic Johnson: 21 PTS, 11 AST, 3 STL, 7/12 FG
Jamaal Wilkes: 26 PTS, 5 AST, 4 STL
Buck Williams: 19 PTS, 9 REB

Game 3 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #4 New York Knicks (Lakers lead 2-0)

The tide had turned in New York. Unfortunately while the Knicks got on the board with their first win of the series, the injury bug has likely destroyed any chance of winning the Finals. Daivd Thompson, dominating the game (16-4-3 in 18 minutes) went down and tore his ACL. This is obviously horrible news for the Knicks not just for the series but for the future as well. The bench stepped up just enough to slow the Lakers down and win Game 3 (Toby Knight: 18 points), but now the Knicks have to solve the big question mark of how to replace one of the best scorers the game has ever seen in a very short amount of time.

KNICKS 111, Lakers 97 (Lakers lead 2-1)

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 31 PTS, 6 REB
Magic Johnson: 26 PTS, 9 REB, 8 AST

Knicks Stats
Micheal Ray Richardson: 20 PTS, 4 REB, 13 AST
David Thompson: 18 MIN, 16 PTS, 4 REB, 3 AST, 8/9 FG
Toby Knight: 18 PTS, 3 REB, 3 AST

***

Game 4 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #4 New York Knicks (Lakers lead 2-1)

The Knicks gave it a heck of a shot, but without Skywalker they couldn’t go toe-to-toe with the Lakers offensive machine. LA dropped 70 first-half points, and while the Knicks kept it somewhat close no one could stop Bernard or Magic. Bernard’s 37 edged out Micheal Ray’s 36, and Magic was again excellent with a 19-12. Toby Knight and Gerald Henderson did a good job replacing Thompson’s scoring load, but it just wasn’t enough.

Lakers 126, KNICKS 118 (Lakers lead 3-1)

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 19 PTS, 6 REB, 12 AST
Bernard King: 37 PTS, 4 REB
Jamaal Wilkes: 28 PTS, 12 REB

Knicks Stats
Micheal Ray Richardson: 36 PTS, 13 AST, 4 STL
Mike Glenn: 18 PTS
Gerald Henderson: 19 PTS, 3 REB, 3 AST

***

Game 5 - #1 Los Angeles Lakers at #4 New York Knicks (Lakers lead 3-1)

A massive run from the Knicks bench kept them alive in Game 5 at the Garden. Rookie Antoine Carr and Gerald Henderson dropped 20 apiece while Toby Knight and Mike Glenn each had 18, all powered by Micheal Ray’s 20 assists. The Knicks shot out to a 76 point first-half, continuing the trend of teams winning games early on. The Knicks also survived 69 combined points from Bernard and Wilkes. The series swings back to LA, where the Lakers only need to win one more game to win their first title since 1972.

KNICKS 128, Lakers 112 (Lakers lead 3-2)

Lakers Stats
Magic Johnson: 11 PTS, 13 AST
Bernard King: 36 PTS, 3 STL
Jamaal Wilkes: 33 PTS, 6 REB

Knicks Stats
Micheal Ray Richardson: 25 PTS, 11 REB, 20 AST, 5 STL
Antoine Carr: 20 PTS, 6 REB
Gerald Henderson: 20 PTS
Toby Knight: 18 PTS, 5 REB, 5 AST
Mike Glenn: 18 PTS, 4 REB, 6 AST, 4 STL

***

Game 6 - #4 New York Knicks at #1 Los Angeles Lakers (Lakers lead 3-2)

It was a valiant effort from the Knicks to make a series of this once they lost David Thompson, but the Lakers were too good to lose here. The Lakers locked up their 7th NBA Championship, scoring 111 points by the end of the third quarter and never looking back. Gerald Henderson, playing in his 4th straight Finals, did what he could to get the Knicks to hang in there with 36 points, but no one could stop the Laker scoring machine. In just 21 minutes, Bernard King scored 39. Magic was awarded Finals MVP, finishing with a 28-9-13 in the clincher. We’ll see what the Knicks look like in the future with the Thompson injury, but the Lakers may just be getting started.

LAKERS 138, New York Knicks 126 (Lakers win 4-2)

Knicks Stats
Micheal Ray Richardson: 6 PTS, 5 REB, 18 AST
Gerald Henderson: 36 PTS, 16/20 FG

Lakers Stats
Bernard King: 39 PTS, 4 REB, 3 AST, 15/19 FG
Magic Johnson: 28 PTS, 9 REB, 13 AST, 11/14 FG
