Regular Season Week 13:

Minnesota Shut Out By Bears, 18-0

bears-lose-to-vikings-11-30-08.jpg

(Jarred Allen Tackling Kyle Orton)

Returning home from an overtime loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings failed to capitalize on home-field advantage and fell with a whimper to the Chicago Bears, getting shut out in the Metrodome 18-0. During the game, Daunte Culpepper was benched two minutes into the game after throwing an interception, and going 2/5 for -2 yards. In replacement was Tavaris Jackson, who faired no better, throwing 11/28, 112 yards, and 2 interceptions. Adrian Peterson had a pedestrian game, rushing literally only 10 times, for 6 yards, and a fumble. On the receiving side of the ball, Bernard Berrian and Chris Henry each caught 3 balls for 36 and 34 yards, respectively. Sidney Rice also caught two passes for 23 yards.

Defensively, Ben Leber lead the defense with 7 tackles and 2 sacks. Cedric Griffen and Chad Greenway also had a sack, with Greenway's sack leading to a forced fumble, which Jared Allen recovered. Chris Henry also forced a fumble following a Tavaris Jackson interception. Cedric Griffen had the lone interception on the game for the Vikings, picking off Kyle Orton.

It wasn't enough for Minnesota, who continues their free fall after starting the season 6-2. They now stand 6-6 and in 2nd place of NFC North. That's not the only story from this week. Rumors have been flooding from inside the Vikings organization that the entire team has mutinied and wants Brad Childress gone immediately. Fran Tarkenton, PR Owner Representative, was not available for comment.

Daunte Culpepper - 2/5, -2 Yards, 1 INT
Tavaris Jackson - 11/28, 112 Yards, 2 INTs

Regular Season Week 14
Vikings Lose to Lions 10-24

20081207__081208allenfight.jpg

Minnesota's downward spiral continues as they drop yet another game, this time to the Detroit Lions. Daunte Culpepper returned as the starter for Minnesota after Tavaris Jackson's disastrous play last week against the Bears. He threw 20/39 for 244 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Not all was lost, as Adrian Peterson rushed 24 times for 144 yards, the first time he rushed for over 100 yards since week 12. Chris Henry caught the lone touchdown from Culpepper, also hauling in the ball 6 times for 70 yards.

On defense, the Vikings had two sacks on Jon Kitna, one by Jared Allen, and another by Ben Leber. Allen also forced a fumble on Kitna, and Chad Greenway intercepted a pass from Jon as well. It was not enough to stop the Lion's offense as the Vikings sputtered and move to 6-7, third place in the NFC North. Minnesota now is on the outside looking in for a playoff berth.

Passing:
Daunte Culpepper - 20/39, 244 Yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Rushing:
Adrian Peterson - 24, 144 Yards

Receiving:
Chris Henry - 6, 70 Yards, 1 TD

Defense:
Jared Allen - 1 Sack, 1 FF
Ben Leber - 1 Sack
Chad Greenway - 1 INT

Brad Childress Fired as Vikings Head Coach

0205_brad_childress.jpg

Brad Childress is out as Vikings head coach. Earlier today, the Minnesota Vikings released a statement of release for the 52-year old head coach. The move comes after an unprecedented slide from 6-2 to 6-7. His final head coaching record stands now at 20-25 and no playoff berths to show for it in his two and 1/2 years with Minnesota. Darren Bevell will be upgraded to interim head coach in Childress's stead.

I'm not a fan of in-season firings myself as I think it's not fair to the locker room having to deal with that change during the season instead of having a full offseason to prepare together, and also the interim coach usually ends up looking bad unless they're just amazing bc there's no time for them to get their shit set up and they're kinda just playing catch up tryna fix stuff that caused the last coach to get fired

Mid-season firings in the actual NFL are usually awful but this is a game. Childress is hot garbage either way. Lookin' forward to see who can replace him with. We should never lose to the damn Lions like that.

Regular Season Week 15:

Vikings Snap Losing Streak, Beat Cardinals 17-7

r960-6c4caf21b3ed3bf2ff83e6b26d045562.jpg

(Peterson Breaking a Tackle)
The Minnesota Vikings, led by interim-head coach Darren Bevell, snapped their five game losing streak, beating the Arizons Cardinals 17-7. Daunte Culpepper had a pedestrian day, going 18/31 for 167 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also was strip-sacked for a fumble. Adrian Peterson on the other hand went wild, rushing 26 times for 143 yards. Thomas Tapeh rushed for an additional 20 yards, but fumbled once during the game. Visanthe Shiancoe caught six passes thrown his way, also catching a touchdown pass from Culpepper.

The defense was stout today as Kurt Warner was sacked four times, all by Ray Edwards, who played in place of injured teammate Brian Robison. Warner was also intercepted twice, once by Mike Doss, and another by rookie safety Tyrell Johnson. The defense allowed only a single touchdown late in the 4th quarter. For the Vikings, this win keeps them barely in playoff contention.

Passing:
Daunte Culpepper - 18/31, 167 Yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 1 FUM

Rushing:
Adrian Peterson - 26, 143 Yards
Thomas Tapeh - 7, 20 Yards, 1 FUM

Receiving:
Visanthe Shiancoe - 6, 40 Yards, 1 TD

Defense:

Tyrell Johnson - 1 INT
Mike Doss - 1 INT

Regular Season Week 16:

Vikings Win Again, Dominate Falcons 14-31
Still Have Chance At Playoffs

falconspic22_12-22-2008_JQF02DV.jpg

(Vikings Swarming Michael Turner)
The Minnesota Vikings come home to the Metrodome and decimate the Atlanta Falcons by a score of 14-31. Daunte Culpepper completed only 14 passes on 31 attempts for 94 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn't his story today. The man of the hour for Minnesota to keep their playoff dreams alive was Adrian Peterson, who ran 41 times for 222 yards and 3 touchdowns, also catching an additional 5 passes his way for 32 yards and Culpepper's only passing touchdown on the day. Peterson, having had lacked many games with above 100 rushing yards (6), makes his first 200+ yard game this season in Week 16 with one game left.

The Vikings defense was once again a force to be reckoned with, sacking rookie Matt Ryan three times (twice by Allen, once by Kevin Williams), forcing a fumble on him, as well as a pass picked off by Madieu Williams. The Falcons failed to truly get going in the first half, thanks very much in part to the Vikings defense.

With this victory, fate must help Minnesota make it into the playoffs. To make the wild-card, Minnesota must win against the #1 seed Giants, and have the Philadelphia Eagles lose. To win the NFC North, Minnesota must win against the Giants and have the Bears lose. Things are very much not over for Minnesota this year, luck must be on their side...

Passing:
Daunte Culpepper - 14/31, 94 Yards, 1 TD

Rushing:
Adrian Peterson - 41, 222 Yards, 3 TDs

Receiving:
Adrian Peterson - 5, 32 Yards, 1 TD

Defense:
Jared Allen - 2 Sacks
Kevin Williams - 1 Sack, 1 FF
Madieu Williams - 1 INT

Regular Season Week 17
Vikings Miss Playoffs, Lose to Giants 27-10

26286394.JPG

The Minnesota Vikings have ended the season in a disappointing 8-8 record, missing the playoffs after the Eagles and Bears won their respective games, as well as Minnesota losing against the #1 seeded New York Giants. During the final game of the season, Adrian Peterson was taken out of the game early, leaving Chester Taylor in backup duty, rushing for the lone touchdown for Minnesota. Taylor ran 19 times for 82 yards as well. Daunte Culpepper did not throw an interception all game, but was wildly inaccurate, throwing 14/36 and 168 yards. Bernard Berrian was the lone highlight on the receiving corps, catching three passes for 42 yards. On defense, Jared Allen and Chad Greenway each had a sack, but nothing more.

The disappointment in what many people thought was an MVP season from Daunte Culpepper back in Week 8 crashed to a grinding halt after a 6-2 start (from Week 9). Minnesota lost 6 of its last 8 games, each in heartbreaking fashion, perhaps most embarrassingly to the 5-11 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ownership was most displeased, and after the Week 14 loss to the Detroit Lions, enough was enough, and Brad Childress was fired post-game. Minnesota, despite having an extremely talented roster, looks from the outside to see what happens in the playoffs.

Daunte Culpepper - 14/36, 168 Yards
