Re: LB presents: The Marvel Movie News Thread

Unlike the first movie where it was filmed entirely in the United States, Marvel's The Avengers 2 is moving its production overseas to the UK, according to Screen Daily. The movie will begin production later this year and principal photography is scheduled to take place in early 2014 at the Pinewood-Shepperton UK studios.

While writer-director Joss Whedon is tight-lipped about the plot of The Avengers sequel, he did talked about what's in store for the movie in very general terms.

"The grand thing is that all of these people have met so you have that out of the way. Now you can spend your time just digging in and by digging in, I mean with a scalpel, to cause pain," Whedon said.

And it appears there's going to be "[d]eath, death, and death." Perhaps Whedon is hinting at the actual character called Death itself, an entity Thanos is enamoured with.

All the actors are expected to return to reprise their roles and the movie is set for a May 1, 2015 release.

The first movie made over $1.5 billion at the global box office and is the third highest grossing movie of all time, just behind Avatar and Titanic.

sounds good to me. Titanic only got more money for the 3-d release.

Re: LB presents: The Marvel Movie News Thread

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy may have found its Gamora. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Zoe Saldana is in talks to play the green-skinned martial artist, who is a member of the said Guardians.

Although Gamora is one of the good guys, she is also the adopted daughter of Thanos, the supposed main villain in the movie. The last of her race, Gamora was picked up and raised by Thanos as a tool to further his plans. She is trained in the martial arts and has super-human strength and agility, which is pretty much required in her line of work.

Saldana will join Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista, who are playing Star-Lord and Drax the Destroyer, respectively. The other two remaining members yet to be cast are Groot and Rocket Racoon. Those two will most likely be CGI mo-cap characters.

Guardians of the Galaxy is to be directed by James Gunn, and the movie will be shooting this June over in the UK for a August 1, 2014 release.

On the rumor front, Latino Review has heard that The Controller is going to be in the movie and "will act as Thanos' main henchman and ambassador."

The Controller is a human who has been cybernetically enhanced and has his eyes set on taking over the world. Of course.

Saldana already has expreience traveling the galaxy with star trek so she should make a good addition to this. I like it.

Re: LB presents: The Marvel Movie News Thread

Seeing as Marvel have perfected the art of the post credits scene in recent years, any guesses what we're getting with Iron Man 3?

First hype for Thor? Maybe an appearance by The Hulk or Hawkeye (both seem to be pretty under the radar as far as Phase 2 goes)? First Guardians of the Galaxy appearance? Maybe even the debut of Ant-Man?

Re: LB presents: The Marvel Movie News Thread

Robert Downey Jr. is about to have another hit on his hands when Iron Man 3 opens in a couple weeks. Iron Man is the franchise that took him back from the brink to the point where his past failures—the flops, the drug addiction, the prison time—become somewhat forgettable. He’s now one of the biggest stars in the world, and has the freedom to choose projects. However, he knows that at age 48, genre movies are becoming a little too much. He learned that lesson the hard way when he injured his ankle while doing a stunt on Iron Man 3.

In a new profile for GQ, Downey talks about how that’s leading him to possibly put away the armor in the near future. He also mentions some projects beyond the Marvel Universe. Hit the jump for more.

Speaking to GQ, Downey says that the injury was a bit of a wakeup call to return to more personal projects:

“It got me thinking about how big the message from your cosmic sponsor needs to be before you pick it up. How many genre movies can I do? How many follow-ups to a successful follow-up are actually fun? Because, as quiet as it’s kept, I come from a family of very innovative writers and directors and actors and artists, and the circle of friends they were in were the people I heard having pun-offs playing poker at two in the morning, and it was just the most comforting aspect of my childhood. So there’s this kind of legacy of souls from what I consider to be a very particular time in entertainment, and I’m sensing a return to that—it’s what me and the missus are doing next. It’s not unlike: I heard Brady signed on for three more years with New England, and then he’s done being a QB, because he’ll be 40. I’m 47, and I’ll be 50.”

Note Downey turned 48 earlier this month, so the interview was clearly done before his birthday] This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Downey being replaced as Iron Man, and The Avengers 2 seems a good a time as any for a last hurrah. The GQ article also mentions that he made about $50 million off The Avengers, so Marvel probably wouldn’t mind a younger, more affordable actor.

As for what the future holds, Downey is content to pursue non-genre fare. This summer, he’ll be working on the drama The Judge with Robert Duvall, which centers on an attorney who returns home for his mother’s funeral where he learns that his estranged father, a judge who suffers from Alzheimer’s, is suspected of murder. He also tells GQ that he’d like to direct, and has an idea stirring for a Halloween picture:

“Nobody,” he says, “has cornered Halloween as a market since Halloween.” He would act in it, too. “I will say only this: I am a Village Voice reporter on the run.”

It’s a project that sounds like it’s in the nascent stages, but I’ll be curious to see if Downey continues to develop it, or if he’ll be drawn to other work in the coming years.

NOOOOO. As long as the replacement for him can carry on the same decent acting and comedy that he has. I vote David Tennant.

This shouldn’t really come as a massive surprise, but actor Michael Rooker has now joined the cast of Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. Rooker has a close working relationship with Guardians writer/director James Gunn, having appeared in Gunn’s previous films Slither and Super. He’s probably best known to the general public for playing Merle on AMC’s The Walking Dead, and while most pegged Rooker for the role of Rocket Raccooon in the space-set Marvel film, he’ll actually be tackling the role of Yondu. Hit the jump for more.

Deadline, Rooker will be playing the character Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy. In the comics, Yondu was a founding member of the Guardians and belongs to the Zatoan tribe, a group of primitive beings native to Centauri IV. He possesses no superhuman physical powers, but he’s a hunter and a natural mystic, with the ability to develop empathetic relationships with other lifeforms.

When Marvel first announced a Guardians of the Galaxy film, it was revealed that the Guardians characters would include Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot the anthropomorphic tree. Thusly, Yondu is a suprising addition and I’m interested to see what kind of story Gunn is cooking up here. The only roles left to fill (that we know of) are the likely performance-capture characters Rocket Raccoon and Groot, as Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and David Bautista are already set to play Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax, respectively. There’s also the matter of the film’s villain(s), which will likely include Thanos and reportedly The Controller.

Guardians of the Galaxy begins production this summer in London in anticipation of an August 1, 2014 release date.

Now I must see this movie. It has Michael fucking Rooker in it.

Michael Rooker & Batista = Sign me the fuck up.

I saw somewhere mention the idea of David Tennant as the next Mr. Fantastic, I think that'd be suitable to him. No idea for the next Iron Man though, Downey has really made the role his. Tough job for whoever takes it.

- Chris Hemsworth and Marvel's Kevin Feige recently spoke about Thor: The Dark World. Here are the highlights and some new images from the film…

Chris Hemsworth on The Relationship With Jane Foster: "Thor still has lot of explaining to do, and a lot of making up," says star Chris Hemsworth. "Even demigods end up in the doghouse, mate. So none of us is safe."

Kevin Feige on Foster in the Film: "So while Thor was a fish out of water on Earth in the first two films (Thor and The Avengers), this time Jane is very much a fish out of water in Asgard.

It's superhero action, but it's the familiar territory of a love triangle where the parents think your girlfriend is wrong for you," says Feige. "That's how the best of these movies work."

Hemsworth on the Relationship Between Thor and Loki: "Needing Loki's help turns everything on its head," says Hemsworth. "And it allows us to explore the underlying complexities of their relationship. It really ends up being a kind of chess match."

Some new images and plot info from Thor 2, I'm still expecting that trailer any day now.

Also of note, Chris Evans Tweeted about fighting GSP the other day, confirming a battle between Capt. and Batroc the Leaper in The Winter Soldier

Re: LB presents: The Marvel Movie News Thread

Loki! Excellent. Looks promising. Also Michael Rooker will be playing Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy, watched Eight Men Out last night and he's just seriously the man.

During the Fan Expo Vancouver this weekend, The Walking Dead’s Michael Rooker took part in a question and answer session with fans. Rooker was asked a couple questions about Guardians of the Galaxy, his new mohawk and director James Gunn.

As first reported by Comicbook.com, Michael Rooker recently met with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn in England. After Comicbook.com’s report, Deadline reported that Michael Rooker had been officially cast as Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy.

While the casting report is almost certainly true, it appears that Michael Rooker is not able to officially confirm the role, possible because it involves a character that has not been officially announced as part of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. However, Michael Rooker did talk about the Guardians of the Galaxy, showing his knowledge of the comic books.

Michael Rooker said, “Guardians of the Galaxy is a comic book series based on superhero-type guys that help protect humankind and all kinds of life that live out in the galaxies, and they kill bad guys and s*** like that, next question.â€￾

Rooker also added, “I’m not at liberty to say anything other than that.â€￾ But he gave a sinister laugh afterwards, which seemed to suggest his involvement.

Rooker also answered questions about his mohawk and director James Gunn. In regards to his mohawk, Rooker said, “I dig it, and I can’t tell you what it’s for.â€￾ When asked if it was an upcoming role, he said, “None of your business.â€￾ Ever since he got the mohawk, Rooker says people think he’s some kind of rock star and keep coming up and telling him they love his music.

In regards to director James Gunn, Michael Rooker said, “James Gunn is the most prepared director that I’ve ever known. He’s a good friend now. We’ve been friends ever since Slither, and he’s a joy to work with. He’s an excellent writer, a very well-prepared director. He comes in and talks with you. It helps a lot to have a director who knows what the hell he wants out of a scene as opposed to someone who’s over there in the corner going like ‘I’m not sure how to shoot it.’ Gunn’s not like that at all.â€￾

Re: LB presents: The Marvel Movie News Thread

We more-or-less already knew this, since as much was strongly indicated late last year, but Marvel's Kevin Feige, out on the Iron Man 3 circuit, has officially confirmed that Fox's rights to Hell's Kitchen hero Daredevil have now lapsed, and that The Man Without Fear is now comfortably back in the Marvel/Disney fold.

That's the extent of the news: there's no film yet, but it's an important step along the road to getting Matt Murdock back on screen, and it's hard to imagine that conversations aren't happening behind closed doors at Marvel headquarters.

Daredevil has had a rough ride in Hollywood since the 2003 film with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. David Scarpa (The Day The Earth Stood Still) wrote a screenplay for a DD reboot in early 2010, and David Slade came aboard to develop and direct the project in the spring of 2011. Brad Caleb Kane (Brooklyn's Finest) and David James Kelly took subsequent shots at the script, before Slade walked in mid-2012.

There was then briefly talk of The Grey's Joe Carnahan taking over the reigns (see his excellent "sizzle reel" trailer pitch below), but the short time-frame needed to get the film mounted before Fox's rights lapsed turned out to be impractical.

Lapse they definitely have then, although it's probably fair to say that Fox are not especially devastated, since they still have the X-Men and the Fantastic Four (on its own reboot path with Josh Trank). The question now is, what will Marvel do? Will they give DD his own movie, or fold him into other films first? And what of the tone? Slade's take was reportedly going to be based on Frank Miller's classic Born Again comics series, but Miller's gritty noir - which Carnahan was also down with - would seem to be an uncomfortable fit for Marvel's current vibe. Mark Waid's recent comics have been a bit more cheerful than Daredevil's been used to in the last few years. Is that the way forward?

All speculation: nothing to see here yet. But we'll be keeping a close eye on developments...

Empire

Matt Murdock is back home. Can't see the movie happening any time soon, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe just got a little more interesting.

Awesome! If done properly a Daredevil movie could be great, with how far comic book movies have come since the first DD movie I'm sure things would turn out better this time.

Re: LB presents: The Marvel Movie News Thread

1258-EW-COVER-IRONMAN3.jpg

Watch out — she’s armed.

Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow have been hoping to get Tony Stark’s ladylove Pepper Potts into some armor ever since the second Iron Man movie, fulfilling the character’s comic book evolution from the damsel in distress to the high-powered heroine known as Rescue. With Iron Man 3, it finally happens. “It’s sort of the comic-book version of a Cinderella story,†Paltrow says of her character’s four-film arc. “She starts timid and sort of cleaning up after Tony, and then she evolves into full strength and a superhero.â€

But there’s a chance that her first time in the suit may also be her last …

In this week’s cover story, Entertainment Weekly explores a question that everyone who sees Iron Man 3 this weekend will be asking: Is this the end?

Downey has fulfilled all his contractual obligations to play the hero that made him a blockbuster star, and there’s currently no Iron Man 4 on Marvel’s slate, which spans the next several years. Everyone involved — including Downey himself — expects he’ll at least return for writer-director Joss Whedon’s Avengers 2 in 2015, but Iron Man 3 doesn’t exactly leave the billionaire/playboy/philanthropist that we know and love in mint condition.

While shooting what he guessed would be a particularly controversial scene for Iron Man 3’s finale (one too spoiler-heavy to describe) Downey recalls asking Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige: “What does this mean if we wind up doing an Avengers 2? Kevin looked at me and said, ‘That’s Joss’ problem to solve.’ I was like, ‘Good man.’â€

Iron Man 3 plays rough with Marvel’s Most Valuable Superhero, which allowed director and co-writer Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) to go for broke with a whole host of story points, including finally getting Pepper into the armor, and presenting a twisted version of Stark’s most infamous villain, The Mandarin (portrayed by Ben Kingsley.) “I thought we needed to do something in the third movie to make it feel like a game-changer,†Black says.

The cover story also comes with an extensive look at all of Marvel’s post-Avengers Phase Two slate of movies, with details on the status of each of the studios upcoming projects: Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers 2, Ant-Man, and beyond.

The Marvel Studios chief Feige spills new details about the stories, and dispels some of the false rumors about what’s in the pipeline.

Some online rumors turn out to be true, however. A source confirms to EW that the twin characters Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will be joining The Avengers 2, which Whedon hinted at recently when he said he was writing a brother-sister duo into the movie. Feige maintains a poker face on that scoop, saying only: “I’m not confirming or denying. The draft could change six months from now.â€

Fans may still hyperventilate over that news. But as long as Downey’s Iron Man is definitely in it, they can also breathe a little easier.

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch will make me happy. Can't wait.

Re: LB presents: The Marvel Movie News Thread

EXCLUSIVE: Robert Downey Jr is set for another huge payday from a mega-hit Marvel movie, this time Iron Man 3. I’ve learned he’s already made $35 million from the actioner which grossed $680 million worldwide in its first 12 days. He should exceed his biggest payday to date — that $50M from The Avengers which I’ve learned was more like $70M-$80M now that the film is all in. But it’s really Avengers 2 where he’ll clean up big-time — if he wants to reprise the role. He’s hinting to some media it may be time to retire Tony Stark. And saying to other outlets that Marvel better show him more money for Avengers 2. â€I don’t know,†he said on The Daily Show. â€I had a long contract with them and now we’re gonna renegotiate.†(“You are Iron Man! You are!†cheered Jon Stewart.) I’ve learned that Marvel and therefore owner Disney are going to run into big trouble on that sequel because the upfront pay, backend compensation, break even points and box office bonuses aren’t pinned down yet for several big stars and castmates. This is major hurdle which Walt Disney Co Chaiman/CEO Bob Iger hasn’t even mentioned to Wall Street or shareholders although he’s already been hyping Avengers 2 for more than a year now.

First and foremost Marvel does not have Downey in place yet. â€They need him, and they don’t have him. He’s got a lot of leverage,†one insider tells me. Much less so Scarlett Johannsen (paid to pop up in Marvel movie after movie), Chris Evans (whom some sources say made his deal for Avengers 2 when he signed for Captain America 2), Chris Hemsworth (a much bigger star now than before and unsigned for Avengers 2), Mark Ruffalo (whose Hulk role already was cast 3 times and could be the most vulnerable), Jeremy Renner (probably grateful for more exposure), Samuel L. Jackson (Scarlett’s doppelganger) among others who were paid pittances for their first movies, not much better for the sequels, and are counting on at least $5 million upfront and better back ends for Avengers 2. That means much better than what Marvel claimed was Avengers’ break-even point: a whopping $1.1 billion in global grosses. (“If Avengers wasn’t profitable until then, why would you make it?†one rep pointedly asked Marvel top execs Kevin Feige and Louis Esposito.) In a business where studio accounting is known as fatal subtraction and even worldwide blockbusters are still supposedly in the red, Marvel and its famously frugal CEO Ike Perlmutter still give new meaning to the term stingy. I’ve learned that one reason why The Avengers was nominated for only one Oscar – Best Visual Effects – in the 85th Academy Awards contest was because Marvel refused to pay for an awards season campaign for the picture. And even when Disney offered to foot the bill, Marvel still wouldn’t budge. (Yet the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences assembled the cast onstage to create buzz.) Here’s how one exec describes any negotiation with Marvel: “I wouldn’t say it’s brutal. It’s uncompromising, not mean or draconian. The fact is this is the reality of the world we’re living in right now.â€

Related: Disney And Marvel Do Damage Control After Media Scrutiny Of Ike Perlmutter

But The Avengers cast are ready to rumble with Marvel for the Avengers sequel slated for a May 2015 release. “Some received only $200,000 for Avengers and Downey got paid $50M. On what planet is that OK?†an insider tells me. CAA represents an overwhelming majority of the Marvel stars and is trying hard to keep the negotiations out of the public limelight and media headlines. But that may not be possible with some reps blaming the studio for ’scorched earth’ tactics past and present. â€Marvel has created so much animosity by strong-arming and bullying on sequels already. It’s counterproductive,†one source tells me. Says another, “I’m sick of Kevin Feige telling me again and again how Marvel is ‘reinventing the movie business’. It doesn’t work like this. They’re reinventing business, period.†I’ve learned Marvel already has threatened to sue or recast when contracts and/or options are challenged. That prompted a few cast members to respond, “Go ahead.†I hear Hemsworth especially wasn’t anxious to go back into that arduous diet and training regimen and subsist primarily on egg whites for Thor: Dark World which hits theaters November 8th. I also understand that Scarlett Johanssen told castmates she’s “not going to cut her quote†for Marvel’s Avengers 2. The actress as butt-kicking operative Black Widow in The Avengers and Iron Man 2 is wrapping Captain America: The Winter Soldier and has a whopping 8 options total.

Already a lot of brinkmanship played out for Captain America 2 and Thor 2. Calling it the “weirdest experienceâ€, one rep still can’;t believe Marvel offered “only a $500,000 raise and then would pay another $500,000 when the movie hits $500M. Are they out of their minds?†When it was pointed out to Marvel that Hemsworth already had received $5M for his starring role in Snow White And The Huntsman, the studio shot back, â€I don’t know why you’re complaining when Marvel only has hit movies.†To which the response was, “He’s happier working at a place like Universal.†After hard-fought bargaining, Chris Evans for Captain America 2 and Chris Hemsworth for Thor 2 wound up with deals still weighted on the back end but at least with attainable break-even numbers and small upfront guarantees and box office bonuses.

The issue going forward is how many of the Avengers stars and starlets are still bound by early agreements and longterm options which Marvel can continue to exploit individually. To counter, I’ve learned the Avengers cast are becoming united behind Robert Downey Jr who is seen as the “leader†– like “a big brother†in the words of one rep - for all the younger actors in the ensemble. “He’s the only guy with real power in this situation. and balls of steel, too. He’s already sent a message that he’s not going to work for a place where they treat his colleagues like shit,†one source explains. Another rep tells me, “I have four words for Marvel – ‘Fuck you, call Robert.’†As Downey himself has said publicly about his $50M-plus payday, â€I’m what’s known as a strategic cost,†adding that Marvel is “so pissed†he earned that much. At this point also, no one is talking Iron Man 4 yet but it’s hard not to anticipate. Don Cheadle (who took over the role of James Rhodes in Iron Man 2 after Marvel pushed aside Terrence Howard) predicted there’s “potential†for a 4th installment. “No one has been specific about what that might look like or what the story could even be,†he said. “First we have to see how this one plays and if people have an appetite for it, and then we’ll figure out if there’s a way to convince Robert to come back and do another one.â€

Some reps tried to go straight to Iger in hopes of discussing renegotiations since Disney purchased the multimedia empire in 2009 for $4.3B - but were rebuffed. “Wait, that’s Marvel. You need to talk to them. I can’t have this conversation,†Iger replied, thus totally distancing himself. Other reps hoped Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn would be helpful. But Horn made clear that Marvel greenlights their own movies and only “coordinates†with him. Besides, he tells reps, “Marvel is doing such a great job running itself.†(In fact Horn himself only met Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter last fall and told a pal about their get-together. “It could not have gone better. We had a meal. I was very impressed with his directness. We’re the same age: how could we not have a good time together?â€)

The sad truth is that both Iger and Horn are scared stiff of Perlmutter and want to steer clear of the inevitable nightmare negotiations. Reps predict Ike is “going to create a lot of drama and going to want to prove a point and not look like he’s going to get run overâ€. Says one out of frustration: “I’m so bent out of shape by this asshole. He now works for a public company so I don’t understand how he can keep hiding behind the curtain.†Easy, because the Israeli-born and reclusive Perlmutter, worth $2.4B, is Disney’s third largest individual shareholder. (He had been the second biggest shareholder but that changed when Disney added Star Wars to its empire and handed George Lucas a ginormous compensation package. Disney’s top shareholder remains the Steve Jobs Trust.) Disney never dared hope that The Avengers would reap $1.5 billion in worldwide box office revenue, the third highest global gross ever. Yet no castmember has ever heard from Ike. True, Kevin Feige phoned the cast that weekend opening, but it was a first. And Iger did pick up the phone to congratulate filmmaker Joss Whedon who recalled to Deadline recently: “He couldn’t have been sweeter. He said ‘This wasn’t about the other movies — you did this’.â€

Acknowledging “I’m doing okay†compensation wise, Whedon reportedly has a “really rich deal†worth an astronomical $100M for several pics, consulting work, a put pilot at ABC, and many other elements that effectively take him off the marketplace for years and years, one source tells me. But even Whedon admits that “Marvel can be very cheap†and believes the reason the cast aren’t â€getting giant quotes†is because of â€the element of the opportunity here for something that is both popular and very human, and usually you have to choose as an actorâ€. But Whedon does see the potential contract hardball as “an issueâ€.

Here are the pertinent parts of that interview:

DEADLINE: Marvel is notoriously cheap and some of the Avengers cast will want more money for the sequel. How could that affect Avengers 2?
WHEDON: I’m not going to comment specifically because I’m not privy to that sort of stuff and I don’t think it’s my place to talk about. In general terms, yes – Marvel can be very cheap, God knows. They can also be sensible and frugal. They have a very small infrastructure and they’re not heaping this money on themselves. I don’t know a producer who’s done more and is paid less than Kevin Feige. I think that it’s an issue but it’s part of a bigger issue, which is there was a time when there was a crisis in the acting community where stars were getting $20 million and character actors were disappearing as a concept. There were no middle class actors. It was suddenly bit players and Jim Carrey, and that was it. Now the studios have gotten to a point where they’re like, “Do we need that star?†With what they’re able to to digitally and the way they create franchises there’s a little bit of a feeling of, maybe we can eliminate the actor – not totally and not totally cynically, but I’ve literally heard people at the agency say, not about Marvel, “This studio is eliminating the middle movie. They’re not making dramas or prestige pics or anything that isn’t either a franchise or a Paranormal-style found footageâ€. I think that changes the landscape for actors because really good actors are interested in doing a franchise because they need something.

DEADLINE: So are you worried about losing talent over these kinds of disputes?
WHEDON: I feel good about Avengers because I feel everyone who took it got something to sink their teeth into. They weren’t hung out to dry. It’s not a soulless piece of work. It may be inept in some places but I meant every word. Marvel distinguished themselves by going after good actors, writers, and directors who were unexpected choices. One side to that is they don’t have to pay them as much. Me, [Jon] Favreau, [Kenneth] Branagh, James Gunn – we don’t have giant action quotes, but we’re all filmmakers who want to do something with a giant action movie instead of just accomplish it. And the actors, from Downey straight on through, they only went after the people who could get it done. So how come they’re not getting giant quotes on this movie? There’s the element of the opportunity here for something that is both popular and very human, and usually you have to choose as an actor.

DEADLINE: A movie makes a billion dollars and an actor is looking at their contract for the next sequel…
WHEDON: And they’re probably going to mention that.

DEADLINE: You don’t think this could conceivably create any problems for Avengers 2?
WHEDON: I don’t, because that would make me sad and I tend to be a bit Pollyanna. I tend to think these roles can alter the course of a career. Not that Mark Ruffalo needs this or is in pursuit of this. That man will always work. But it doesn’t suck. We had an amazing time making the movie and that kind of recognition doesn’t hurt, if it’s not with Marvel or the next guy. It’s useful.

I hope all works out but this could be trouble. No RDJ then the whole movie fails along with some of the others involved.
