ROH Redemption - ROH World Championship Match: CM Punk vs. Samoa Joe vs. Christopher Daniels vs. James Gibson
Punk's ego wouldn't let him walk away without one more title match. He was also scheduled to take on former partner Colt Cabana the following night. The crowd is vocally behind Christopher Daniels here, but they also start a "Thank you, Punk," chant, so they know what time it is. And i can't believe this is the first time since 2005 that I've seen this and FUCK ME! it still holds up. There were so many stories told so well in this match. You had Joe and Daniels and their quiet dissension. You had Punk trying to run out the clock especially with his isolation of Daniels. He dropped the match to a snails pace with submission holds, and spent most of the match playing for time, knowing a draw means he retains and Gibson trying frantically to not let it happen. You had Punk being reluctant to fight Daniels and terrified to fight Joe while being comfortable fighting Gibson because he'd actually beaten him in the past. Even the little touches, like Joe quickly blocking Punk's headlock, Punk thinking he'd beaten ROH once and for all by finally pinning Joe. But that was only natural with the match they were going for. Samoa Joe was at his brutal best, and was almost underused, and the angle they worked with Gibson was genius. At the start of the match he was probably the least over guy in the ring. No fault of his own, but Punk is leaving and the biggest heel in the promotion, Joe is Joe and Daniels was insanely over for some reason. But when he came back from injury to win the belt the roof practically blew off the arena. An epic contest and a fitting end to CM Punk’s title reign is, which beyond question, the best angle Ring Of Honor has ever done (I might have to rewatch the ROH/CZW feud though)
The ovation for Gibson’s win is incredible. Spanky and Jamie’s tearful wife lead the rest of the locker room to the ring…what a moment. He calls this the most important moment of his career, more than being Cruiserweight Champion, more than Wrestlemania etc.Punk and Gibson hug in the middle of the ring and everyone chants ‘Thank You Punk’. We even go backstage and see him congratulated by Matt Hardy, Samoa Joe and Dave Prazak as well…and that’s where we fade. ****1/2
