ECW House Party 1998 - Tommy Dreamer & Balls Mahoney & Axl Rotten vs. FBI

As Rich continues on his drunken rant about touring the NWA and meeting Bob Geigel, it gets so silly that even Beulah and Ballz are incapable of keeping a straight face. Once we go through all that and start the match, Axl decides to cut a retaliatory promo, pointing out that Rich is full of shit. No, REALLY? Dreamer shoves Guido around, and Rich would be RIGHT THERE defending him if he wasn’t being held back by Tracy Smothers. Dreamer gets a full-nelson, but Guido makes the ropes. Bodyblock is reversed to a blockbuster by Dreamer, and he goes for a frog splash that gets two. Smother comes in and misses a charge, and Axl clotheslines him for two. Guido & Axl do a comedy routine and Axl works the arm. Ballz legdrops Guido, but Smothers comes back in. They slug it out and Tracy gets a sidekick. Ballz superkicks him in return for two. Tracy gets another sidekick, but tries a rana and gets powerbombed for two. Rich finally comes in, but a cheapshot on Dreamer puts the FBI in control and they all brawl out. Back in, Evil Referee Jeff Jones comes in and throws powder at the faces, allowing Guido to stomp away. Kneedrop on Axl and the FBI get a Paisan Elbow for two. Double-team shoulderblock gets two. Smothers hits the chinlock, and Guido gets a legsweep. Rich gets in for real and suplexes Axl, but misses the FISTDROP OF DOOM. Hot tag to Ballz. He cleans house, but the FBI get a triple-rollup for two. The referees argue and Jim Molineux DDTs Jeff Jones for the pin. *

ECW House Party 1998 - Chris Candido vs. Jerry Lynn

Candido finds various excuses to stall, before they start with a criss-cross and Lynn gets a dropkick. He follows with a rana after more stalling and they work off a headlock. They slug it out and Candido gets a neckbreaker and goes up for a legdrop that gets two. Chops, but Lynn dropkicks him and goes for a rana, which Candido counters with a powerbomb. Long delayed suplex gets two for Candido. Lynn pancakes him for two. Candido tries the same move, but gets rolled up for two. Nice bit of psychology there. Candido hits a lariat to stop the tide, but Lynn gets a headscissors and a backdrop. He dropkicks Candido in the corner, but Candido tosses him and takes a breather. Lynn dropkicks him out and follows with a baseball slide and a tope. They brawl outside and Lynn badly blows a somersault off the apron, nearly falling flat on the railing in the process. Back in, he goes up and gets crotched, but blocks a superplex and comes crashing down on Candido’s bad arm. Cross armlock gets the submission win VERY quickly. That finish was completely out of nowhere. Match was okay, if filled with too much stalling from Candido. **

ECW House Party 1998 - Great Sasuke vs. Justin Credible

Nicole Bass & Jason have a makeout session before the match, and I feel sick and i now want a gun to kill myself. This was during the initial insane overpush that Justin got, as Paul put him over EVERYONE in order to erase the memory of Aldo Montoya. Sasuke attacks and sends Justin crashing out, and he follows with a tope con hilo. Always a good start. They brawl outside and Justin gets acquainted with the crowd. Sasuke follows him out there with a dropkick off the railing. They brawl into the bleachers and Sasuke hauls him back in and grabs a cross-armlock. He works an armbar, into an STF and camel clutch. Half-crab and legdrop get two. Back to the cross armlock. He switches to an abdominal stretch, but Justin overpowers him, only to walk into a leg lariat. Justin bails, but Jason trips up Sasuke. He shakes it off and follows Justin out with the SPACE FLYING TIGER DROP~! Jason trips him up AGAIN, and this time it’s enough to cause him to miss a pescado and fuck up his knee on the landing. Justin goes after it like a good heel, and gives him the Ringpost figure-four and he keeps on the knee in the normal fashion. Dropkick to the knee gets two. A chair to the knee does more damage, but Sasuke cradles for two, reversed for two. Splash on the knee, but a second one misses. Sasuke comes back on one leg, but misses a moonsault and lands on the knee. Justin gives him the spinning tombstone 1-2-3. Match was quite good and better then i expected, the onl thing i didn't like was Justin worked on the leg for 5 straight minutes and violently destroying it but didn't win with a submission win. ***

ECW House Party 1998 - Rob Van Dam vs. Ban Ban Bigelow

This was during the incredibly lame “WWF invasion” period where Rob was a “loyalist” to the WWF. In an incredible twist of irony that only happens in wrestling, after ECW went bankrupt it was revealed that the WWF was actually making secret payments to Paul Heyman to keep him alive all this time. Bigelow gets a quick dropkick, but RVD kicks away and gets an enzuigiri. Sunset flip is blocked with Bigelow’s ass, and Rob bails to regroup. Stalling follows, and back in Bam Bam pounds away and tosses him like he was NOTHING. Rob tries a rana, countered with a powerbomb. See, that’s the third time in the same show they do that spot. Rob bails again. Bam Bam teaches him some manners and RVD bumps all over the place. He manages to headscissor Bigelow to hold him off, and comes back with a superkick that puts him over the railing into the crowd. Rob heads back in and follows up with a dive into the front row. No somersault, just a basic leap. He keeps knocking Bammer down and gets more mad hangtime on another dive. Bam Bam finally gets back in, where Rob slugs him down. He misses Rolling Thunder, but keeps stomping away. Pump splash misses, but he legdrops the back for two. Monkey flip is stopped and Bigelow catapults him and gets an elbow for two. DDT gets two. Avalanche and Bigelow goes up, but misses a senton. Rob makes use of a chair, and gets a split-legged moonsault. Bammer tosses the chair at him and Rob bails again. Too much of that here. Bigelow stops to go after Fonzie, and the ref is bumped as a result. Bigelow chairshots Rob into the front row, but now Candido runs in and gets abused by Bammer. So does Tammy. And Francine. And Shane Douglas, but that’s enough distraction for Rob to hit the missile dropkick and frog splash for the pin. Their match in Buffalo a few months later was so much better it’s not even close. *1/2

ECW House Party 1998 - ECW TV Title: Taz vs. 2 Cold Scorpio
They work the mat to start and exchange leg submissions. Taz overpowers him, but Scorpio pounds away. Shoulderblock and superkick send Taz out, and Scorpio follows with a baseball slide. Back in, Taz gets a release powerbomb and elbow. They head out and brawl, which Taz gets the best of. Back in, and Taz dumps him again. This is going nowhere. Back in, Scorpio takes over as he rams Taz into a chair, then goes up for a splash that gets two. Back up, somersault legdrop gets two. Back-kick sets up another highspot, but Taz T-Bones him out of nowhere. Backdrop suplex puts both guys down, but Taz misses a charge and gets superkicked. Scorpio goes up for an apparent finish, but the moonsault only gets two, pissing off the crowd. Back up for the 450, but he wastes time and doesn’t cover. Not smart. Tazzmission quickly finishes it. *1/2

ECW House Party 1998 - The Dudleys vs. New Jack & Kronus & Spike Dudley
Gertner then takes credit for the Dudleyz being the rightful six-man champs, until even Joey thinks the joke is pounded into the ground. Speaking of jokes pounded into the ground, Joel goes for the topical reference by making fun of Sonny Bono’s death. Man, talk about your dated references. The Dudleyz are introduced as though they were the Freebirdz, and that’s pretty much it as far as entertainment value for this match goes. Big brawl to start as the faces bring plunder with them and gang up on Big Dick. Spike takes Bubba, but gets sent flying. Bubba kills him in the crowd, and Kronus is already bleeding. In the ring, Big Dick and New Jack go and Jack uses the crutch to no effect. Big Dick avalanches Jack and Sign Guy handcuffs him to the top rope, which is how he spends the rest of the match. The Dudleyz take turns teeing off on him in the corner, and that goes on WAY too long before Spike finally makes the save, hitting Acid Drops on both Bubba & D-Von. Unfortunately, he proves unable to handle Big Dick and goes through a table as a result. Kronus kicks away at Bubba and Big Dick, and gets the 450 for two. He goes after Sign Guy and Gertner, but gets pushed into a Bubba Cutter for two. Double-team neckbreaker gets two. 3D finishes. 1/4*

ECW House Party 1998 - Stairway to Hell Match: Sandman vs. Sabu
This is the famous Stairway to Hell match, featuring a ladder leading up to barbed wire. Sabu hits him with the ladder right away a few times, and he legdrops him between a chair and the ladder for two. Atomic Arabian Facebuster gets two. Sandman bails and Sabu follows with a plancha into the crowd. They brawl for a while, and over to the broadcast position, where Sabu sets up a table and puts Sandman through it. Sandman comes back with a slam and elbowdrop and they brawl back to the ring. Sandman suplexes a ladder onto Sabu and see-saws it into Sabu’s jaw. He follows with a suplex onto a table and legdrop on it. He puts the ladder across the railing and apron and legdrops Sabu on it. Sandman climbs and grabs the barbed wire, but Sabu dropkicks the ladder and sends him crashing out of the ring and through a conveniently placed table. You can actually do that spot in No Mercy, which is a scary thought. But speaking of scary, Sabu tries to follow him out with a plancha, and lands chin-first on the railing, breaking his jaw in the process. That’s just repulsive to see. Into the ring, Sabu chairshots Sandman into the barbed wire, and blood results. He puts Sandman in the tree of woe, with barbed wire on his face, then dropkicks a chair at him. Blind charges misses, and Sandman canes him. Fonzie hastily tapes up Sabu’s rapidly bleeding jaw, but it’s obvious he needs medical attention, badly. Triple jump moonsault is blown, Arabian facebuster is blown, and Sandman obviously gets the message because he finishes Sabu with a caneshot. It was an okay bunch of spots, but Sabu’s injury just shot the ending all to hell. **

ROH Manhattan Mayhem III - ROH World Tag Team Titles, Submission Match: The American Wolves (w/Shane Hagadorn) vs. Kevin Steen & El Generico

This was the Wolves fifth defense. And They're accompanied by Shane Hagadorn. The champs play keepaway early on and refuse to lock up. Steen and Generico are eager to get the fight started, so they chase the Wolves to the floor and the brawl is on. The challengers are in complete control early on, much to the delight of the NYC crowd. Then they spend too much time gloating, and Richards takes advantage, bringing Steen back in the ring. Richards goes for a missile dropkick, but Steen avoids it and locks on a Sharpshooter. Edwards breaks that up. I hate it when in no-disqualification matches they enforce tags and the legal man rule. What exactly is the referee going to do in a match where the only way a team can win is by submission? Richards escapes an abdominal stretch and tags Edwards. Before too long the challengers are back in control. Edwards backs Steen into a corner and tags Richards, who wisely goes after Steen's arm, starting to wear it down. The Wolves work Steen's arm briefly, and then shift focus to his knee. Also, why does the referee enforce rope breaks? After a long beating, Generico comes flying in to the ring with a cross body off the top rope, taking both Wolves out. This gives Steen time to recover, and he hits a superkick and a cannonball in the corner, and then locks on another Sharpshooter. Richards escapes and Steen makes the tag. Generico nails Richards with the running Yakuza kick in the corner, a Suplex, and then another Yakuza. He tries to choke Richards out but Edwards breaks it up. Steen and Edwards fight to the floor while Generico slugs Richards down in the ring. Generico runs into the ropes and Edwards pulls them down. Richards then leaps off the top rope with a Shooting Star Press to the floor, wiping everyone (including his own partner) out. Back in the ring Generico catches Richards with a Michinoku Driver. Generico tries another running Yakuza but Richards catches the leg and hits a Dragon Screw, and then vicious attacks the knee. Richards puts Generico up top and then gets knocked down. Edwards runs in with a knee to Generico's face, and then hits a super rana. Richards locks Generico in a Texas Cloverleaf and Steen just barely breaks it up. Moments later Steen locks Richards in yet another Sharpshooter, but Richards won't give up. Edwards tries to break it up, but Generico catches him and locks on a Sharpshooter as well! The Wolves break the holds. Steen goes for a Package Piledriver but gets backdropped to the floor. Generico hits a running Yakuza on Edwards and sets him up top. Richards comes out of nowhere to whack Generico in the knee with the ring bell, and Edwards locks on a single leg crab. Generico taps and the Wolves retain. Not as crazy good as their HDNet match, but a fine addition to the feud. ****

ROH Violent Tendencies - ROH World Tag Team Titles: The American Wolves (w/Shane Hagadorn) vs. KENTA & Roderick Strong

This is their sixth defense. They are of course accompanied by Shane Hagadorn. KENTA and Davey Richards start the match, as there is heat left over there from their singles match back in April. Strong is replacing the injured Bryan Danielson. He boots Davey right out of the sky. Then, he no-sells Eddie's laughable (for KENTA) attempts at offense and slaps the stupid off his face. Finally, he goes crazy with kicks on everybody. The Wolves regroup and isolate KENTA for a spell. He refuses to budge on a suplex, though, and suplexes Eddie. Davey cuts off the tag, and they do that SUPERB pupil-vs.-teacher sequence where they mirror each other's kicks. Roderick gets the hot tag, and the two former No Remorse Corps members slug it out. KENTA recovers enough to bust out a SICKENING counter to a kick by bending Davey over into an STF. Edwards makes the save before getting tossed. DOUBLE STOMP! Edwards breaks up a series of kicks from the outside and gets knocked on his ass. That gives Richards the opening to suplex KENTA, though. The Wolves escape double Go2Sleeps and hit superkicks. The challengers escape their clutches and go for the Go2Sleeps again, but the Wolves counter AGAIN, this time to double Dragon Screws! Roddy and KENTA counter to small packages, though. A counter of a counter of a counter of a move they've never even used? Tremendous! The Wolves hit their superkick/German/jackknife finisher on Roderick, but KENTA. Just. Makes. The. Save. DOOMSDAY BUSAIKU KNEE! ONE, TWO, THR-Richards makes the save. INSANE sequence sees Davey KICK, PUNCH AND CHOP THE SHIT OUT OF Roddy only to get MOWED THE FUCK DOWN by KENTA coming in with a flying Yakuza kick. He came out of nowhere. KENTA stand up right into a superkick from Edwards who, in turn, meets the boot of Roderick Strong. The crowd is freaking out! Roderick covers. ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! The Wolves hit the doubleteam lungblower on Roderick. ONE, TWO, THRE-NO! Edwards turns him over into half-crab, though, and Roderick has to tap. That was an absolutely tremendous tag team match with non-stop action, as can be expected from the Wolves at this point and cause all 4 guys have worked with eachother for years they dozen twists and turns, few of which you see coming and a few you've never seen from these guys. ****1/4

P.S. I may have left some ring action out cause it was so fast and the action never stopped.

ROH Final Countdown Tour: Chicago - ROH World Tag Titles: The American Wolves (w/Shane Hagadorn) vs. The Briscoe Brothers

Jay accuses the Wolves of ducking them, and this was originally scheduled as a non-title match. But ROH President Cary Silkin changes it to a title match, The Briscoes attack right away and have all the momentum on their side. Edwards is the unfortunate Wolf who gets stuck in the Briscoe's half of the ring. They work him over a bit, until Edwards hits a jawbreaker and tags Richards. Jay picks up where he left off with Edwards and they start beating up Richards now. Neither Jay nor Mark seems interested in selling any Wolf offense in these opening minutes. Of course as soon as I type that, the Wolves take over on Mark, who continues trying to fight back. Mark avoids a double-team maneuver and makes the tag to Jay. The Wolves try to double-team Jay but that doesn't go well for them. Jay hits Richards with a Death Valley Driver for two. The Wolves recover and Richards locks Jay in a Texas Cloverleaf, and Mark comes in to break it up. They continue to work Jay over in their half of the ring for several minutes, keeping Jay away from his brother. Of course at some point Jay decides to stop selling and makes the tag to Mark, who comes in a house afire. He nails Edwards with a Fisherman Buster for two. He follows up with a Super Ace Crusher for another near-fall. He goes for the Cutthroat Driver but Edwards reverses it to a belly-to-back suplex, and Richards gets the tag. Mark tries a Uranage but Richards counters with a victory roll for two. Richards comes back with a handspring enziguiri while Mark stands there waiting for it. The Wolves finally go after Mark's previously injured knee. Edwards hits a super duper Frankensteiner and Richards locks him in the Texas Cloverleaf. Jay tries to break the hold and Richards spits in his face. Everybody's up now and throwing kicks and strikes, and all four eventually go down. Jay and Edwards wind up as the legal men in the ring, and Jay hits a big clothesline for two. The Wolves come back with double-teaming and Edwards locks Jay in the Half Crab until Mark breaks it up. They go for the superkick / German Suplex combo but Jay avoids it and hits the Jay Driller! Richards breaks up the pin, but then gets dumped to the floor. The Briscoes hit the Doomsday Device, but Richards breaks it up by dropkicking Paul Turner in the face. That's enough for the disqualification. You had to know that was going to happen when Cary made the last-minute switch. Exciting match, but the Briscoes unwillingness (or inability) to sell anything for more than three seconds really dragged this down. ***1/2

ROH Final Countdown: Glory by Honor VIII - ROH Tag Team Titles, Ladder War: The American Wolves (w/Shane Hagadorn) vs. Kevin Steen & El Generico

This is the Wolves ninth defense. Edwards is coming into the match with a broken elbow that he received in a street fight with Steen last night in Boston. which draws an "Eddie Edwards" chant from the crowd in admiration of the man's balls. He gets no such respect from Steen who goes right after him and tries to bite his face off. Steenerico use the ladder to clothesline both Wolves. The Wolves keep Steen from going up, but he suplexes Davey on the ladder. The Wolves backdrop Generico on a ladder and handcuff Kevin Steen. With Steen helpless, that leaves Generico to take the superkick/German through a table. Davey wraps a chain on his leg and kicks Steen with it. Steen punts Davey in the nuts and knocks Edwards over as he's going up. Generico recovers enough to hit DOUBLE YAKUZA KICKS! That leaves Hagadorn alone, and Generico steals the key from him. FREE STEEN! The match enters a lull as Steen sets up tables on the floor. The challengers set up tables in the corners of the ring and a ladder in the middle. On the outside, Steen sets up a table on top of a ladder stretched across the apron and barricade. Edwards takes a wicked chairshot from Generico and gets spinebustered into a ladder. They put the Wolves on the tables and prepare to splash them from the ladder, but Davey shoves the ladder over. Edwards wipes out Steen with a DDT through a nearby table. Generico and Richards go up. Generico fights him off long enough to hit the SUPER SUNSETBOMB THROUGH THE TABLE! Edwards storms back in, and Generico tries it again. This time, though, Edwards backdrops him through the table! Everyone take a second to recover, and Generico wipes out Richards with a tope under the ladder and through the ropes. Steen goes up the big-ass ladder, but Edwards recovers enough to shove him over. TIIIIIMBEERRRRRR! Steen plummets through the table and ladder at ringside! Edwards and Generico battle it out on top of the ladder. Edwards fights him off just long enough for Davey to hit Generico with the chair. That sets up a half-crab through the rungs of the ladder. Davey climbs over his partner to retrieve the belts. Of course it wasn't as good as the first one, but props to Edwards for giving a hell of an effort. And to Steen and Generico's who were willing to kill themselves. It's so hard to rate ladder matches these day cause all the NON DEATH spots have been done before, sure, but it was the intensity and desperation that set this apart. ****1/4

ROH Dragon Gate Invasion - Homicide vs. El Generico

Homicide is at his pissed off here because classic Colt dissed him on the "Good Times, Great Memories" show. After some stalling Homicide dumps Generico to the floor right away and tosses him into the barricade. He goes after Generico with a wooden chair but the referee persuades him not to use it. Back in the ring Generico gets a drop toehold and an armdrag. Homicide comes back with a hurricanrana but gets armdragged out of the ring. Back in the ring Generico grabs an armbar. Homicide goes to the corner to break. He chops Homicide and then runs from him 3 times. Homicide catches him with a German suplex and a stiff kick to the back. He drops a knee for 2. He pulls at the mask but the referee breaks that up. He puts on a chinlock but Generico fights out. Homicide hits a knee to the gut for 2. He hits the knee in the corner and kicks Generico in the back. He goes back to the chinlock and then hits a belly-to-belly overhead suplex for 2. He sets Generico on the top turnbuckle but Generico comes back with a sunset flip powerbomb for 2. Homicide blocks a blind charge but gets hit with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Generico hits a springboard dropkick and Homicide bails. Generico follows him out with a corkscrew body press. Back in the ring Generico comes off the top with a crossbody for 2. Homicide blocks the brainbuster but gets caught in a wristlock. Generico comes back with a tornado DDT for 2. Homicide hits an Ace Crusher from the second rope for 2. He hits a bodyslam for 2. He climbs to the top but Generico cuts him off. Homicide fights him off and hits the diving headbutt. He hits a pair of short-arm clotheslines and the lariat for the win. This was basiclly a squash, but a pretty entertaining one at that. **
