Basically, Lincoln's death allowed for his Vice President, Andrew Johnson to become President. Johnson was a fucking horrible racist and Southern Sympathizer, who basically allowed the KKK to run wild and murder blacks, and made lives arguably worse for a time post-slavery for those people (since they basically were no longer considered expensive property, just lesser beings that deserve death), and essentially conspired with the governments of the South to slow Reconstruction down heavily. This guy was the first President to be impeached, and he was literally like a few votes away from being thrown out.

When US Grant became elected, his first step was to *destroy* the KKK, literally run them into the ground. He then set up the Civil Service, he successfully managed to have Great Britain pay war reparations for helping build Confederate warships, and passed the 15th Amendment (all citizens right to vote regardless of race, etc.), and most of all was one of the few Presidents who was generally pragmatic when it came to Native American relations despite the Great Sioux War occurring during his Presidency.
