Basically, Lincoln's death allowed for his Vice President, Andrew Johnson to become President. Johnson was a fucking horrible racist and Southern Sympathizer, who basically allowed the KKK to run wild and murder blacks, and made lives arguably worse for a time post-slavery for those people (since they basically were no longer considered expensive property, just lesser beings that deserve death), and essentially conspired with the governments of the South to slow Reconstruction down heavily.
