The best way I can describe socialism vs communism is this. Socialism is government regulation of the economy, strong taxation systems, but there is still room for private business. Communism is an "ideal" of no classes, no conflict, everyone owns the means of production, and an eventual dissolution of the state. I say an ideal because every time someone has tried to institute communism it has felt more like facism/a dictatorship with a sprinkle of communist ideas. It's a "utopia" meaning no-place

This. The idea is that the state "disappears" over time so that Communism can come into place (as defined by Marx), but they just... don't go away.

Communism means the people should own the means of production and consumption. Socialism the production, but its end goal is to become Communism. It's meant to be the bridge between Capitalism and Communism, but it's never an ending point.
