I get that. My idea of the Attitude Era would be between WrestleMania 14 and 17. There was definitely some AE stuff going on before and after that but that's just what I consider the peak period.
The official start to the Attitude Era has a defined spot for canon and it's a December episode of Raw. Vince starts the program and tells the audience Raw would be getting more attitude. For my personal canon, though, I think it starts with the debut of Raw Is War in March with the Bret Hart shoot. It's one of the first times Vince is revealed as the owner and not just a commentator.
The end is a bit more of a stretch as they don't ever really say it's over, but Ruthless Aggression Era's promo that kicks it off is technically June 2002 and they were technically using the WWF Attitude Era shirts and slogan until May 2002 when they changed to WWE. So if Attitude Era slogan stopped in May and Ruthless Aggression started in June, I think 2002 is the correct answer.
Groupin' 97-99 in with 2000-2001 considerin' the shift to match quality durin' that time period, just makes it feel like two different products. I don't even know what I'd call it but Vince Russo sure wasn't there
