Simply put who are your favourites? And who have you've seen live.

Jack Dee - He is very dry, and paces his routines very well, he is able to stay in his grumpy character throughout his shows and even when he appears on other television shows, almost like he lives the character. His shows seem edgy without resorting to crude humour or racial content. He is actually a very humaine figure.

Rich Hall - That shapely delivered southen humour, he has a comic flair, is able to feed off the crowd and react to his surrounders. Hall does twisted and deadpan better than most, he is a very polictical comic, but also is able to turn the most silly or smallest of things into something really funny (surely the aim of any stand up worth his or hers name). A warm, yet unpredicable talent, a one off in many ways.

Lucy Porter - She has great energy and is able to give off a cuddly yet deadly comic outbusts. Porter uses finely judged personal embarrsements, dirty stories and surreall tales to over power the audience. A charming performer.

Reginald D Hunter - This guy has so much charasma, and is such a sharp and engaging speaker, and yet he is has composure and is able to blend smoothly into the back ground. His focus tends to be a lot on the gender divide and politics, just when you think he has settled on one side or the other Hunter will twist things around and bite you on the arse! One of the greatest comedy performances I have ever seen.

Issy Suttie - Best known as Dobby from Peep Show, but her stand up shows entail sweet, sad, but colouful and twisted tales of love, the working class and a world obsessed with cerebrity. To go along with her stand up, she plays songs in which she takes on the roles of different characters. A very warm and powerful performer. There is scope for her to improve.

Frank Skinner - This guy just gets better with age. He is now moulding himself out a very fine presenting career on television, while still being one of the most sought after comics. He has gone from being a cheeky every day lad, to a dark comic performer who has quick witted observations on the classes, politics, football, celebrity and pretty much everything in between. Skinner is just one of those guys who envolves and gets better with age.

Jerry Seinfeld and Tina Fey - I put these two together as I am impressed more by their sitcom work and the effect those shows have had on me. I have seen neither as stand ups, apart from the clips of Seinfeld on his show and Fey on SNL. But based on the vision of both and just how interesting their personaities are I would love to see both.

Chris Addersion - Star of the Thick of it, but an awesome stand up in his own right. The guy speaks with so much passion and bounce, he is a great physical comedian and is one of the quickest thinkers on the comedy circult. Addersion divides his time goothing around in the most eye catching way and being a total gentleman, but one you could listen to for hours on any subject. Almost like life itself.

As for shows my top five would be:

5. Lucy Porter, Lancaster the Dukes, March 2010
4. Jon Richardson, Lancaster the Dukes, October 2009
3. Mark Lamar, Peterborough the Cresant, April 2000
2. Rich Hall, Morecambe the Platform, September 2008
1. Reginald D Hunter, Lancaster Grand Theatre, April 2010.

On top of those you mentioned, who I all find fantastic especially Rich Hall who's one of my favourite, I'd add.

Kevin Bridges - The guy is massively popular at the moment, with good reason unlike the rest of the BBC brigade that've been shoved down our throats. He comes from around my area so I find most of his anecdotes very easy to relate to, and having met him, he's genuinely a really nice, cool guy.

Frankie Boyle - Not everybody's cup of tea, but I find him hilarious. Sort of stuff you shouldn't laugh at, but find yourself cringing at. His show was a bit hit and miss, but I'm going to see him in December so I can't help but be excited considering he apparently retired after his last tour.

Jerry Sadowitz - Like Boyle only much more offensive. Saw him this year in the King's Theatre in Glasgow and it was crazy, people were leaving after being verbally assaulted, you'd need thick skin to go see him, but it is an experience I'm glad I had.

Dylan Moran - I like his wimsical, trailing stories style. Probably my favourite comedy gig was seeing him at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival.

Bill Hicks - Because it's Bill Hicks.

Dennis Leary - Yeah, he apparantly ripped off a lot of Hicks' material, but I like his delivery of 100 miles per hour, chain smoking madness.

A few more to add like George Carlin, Jo Brand, Simon Amstell, Dara O'Briain, Eddie Izzard, Ed Byrne, Robin Williams, Charlie Brooker, Robert Florence, Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan, Billy Connelly... so many more.

As far as my favourite shows?, like you I'll do a top 5.

5 - Sarah Millican - was alright, not my favourite, but it was a free day out with the family so I enjoyed it.
4 - Jerry Sadowitz - Crazy.
3 - The Mighty Boosh - Bearing in mind I find the Boosh show mental when I'm sober, I attended this somewhat intoxicated and it blew my mind.
2 - Kevin Bridges - Saw him perform at a local pub for a charity event and it was fantastic.
1 - Dylan Moran - Just a really great performance from one of my favourites.

As a huge stand up comedy nerd it's kind of hard to pick a few favorites but I'll try nonetheless.

Anthony Jeselnik- To me, he is the absolute king of one liners. Rarely does he break character and his egotistical attitude just makes his jokes that much more funny. He's very dark covering topics such as religion, abortion, death and rape but flips upside down on its head. He is extremely smart, bringing up punch lines that involve Shakespeare, and has is own style that you can immediately recognize.

Paul F. Tompkins- This is more of the man himself as opposed to his comedy but his stand up is just as funny. His signature appearance is a suit and a curled mustache. He'll always tell a story, go back and break down things mid story with funny observations. Let's not forget his amazing characters such as Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber, Cake Boss and Ice T to name a few.

Maria Bamford - Maria is very original. You can always tell who she is just by her voice. Most would know her as the crazy Target lady in those commercials two years ago but her stand up is superb. She does voices throughout most of her act and although she doesn't really do a lot of them as she repeats the same voice quite a lot, it's about her reaction to said voices as its normally stories where she voices the other parts.

Hitch Hedberg - RIP to one of the best in the business. Hedberg could make anything funny. I'm not sure what it was about him but the lamest of jokes he can make me erupt in laughter. His persona was amazing and he deserves more credit from today's comics. Talk to any comic and Mitch was probably one of their favorites.

Chris Hardwick - the quick witted Hardwick is an amazing person and funny comic. He mainly talks about nerdy things referencing Doctor Who and Twilight Zone but sometimes he'll throw in jokes about his time in an all boys catholic school or growing up in the south. His podcast is amazing as well as he talks with other stand up comics and tv personalities.

Jimmy Pardo - the king of crowd work. Jimmy probably has the fastest mind in comedy. He has the ability to make anything funny although he tends to stay away from bathroom humor. He does quick banter with the audience and in his podcast, he has the most funny conversations with many fellow comics, musicians and celebrities. Many people have probably only seen him once on Tosh.0 in the David after dentist sketch but trust me when I say he is incredibly funny. He is the warm up comic on Conan and does the Pardo patrol for the website. I urge you to see his "Is Santa irrelevant" sketch for Conan.

Amy Schumer - Another dark comic. She'll mainly play a stereotype of women and make it funny. I mean the cover for her album "Cutting" has her in a cheer leading outfit, on her knees cooking with a black eye and she's smiling. Her comedy really goes all over the place from talking about her boyfriend and sex to her joking about drinking for two now that she's pregnant. Most may know her from the Comedy Centra Roast and she's done a special too.

Greg Giraldo - unfortunately another comic who we've lost. Greg was incredible at stand up. Many probably recognize him from the Comedy Central Roasts and other Comedy Central things because they loved him and knew how good he was and he deserved to be on TV. He's done two specials for them as well. I'm glad he never resorted to joking about race as I hate comics who do as its an easy way out. Greg would make jokes and people would go why has no one thought of this before. Greg was one of the first comics I got into when I first got into stand up.

Some interesting choices there. I really liked Boyle when he was on Mock the Week, but nowadays he is more interested in being a celebrity and using shock tactics just for the sake of it rather than because they add anything. Also some of areas of humour just are not funny.

I am a big Moran fan, would love to see him live.

Yeah, honestly Gervais' stand up is a million times better than his corny TV show routine.

Love all his stand up gigs, reallllyyy not keen on any of his TV/Film work.

Also, Richard Pryor.

I am the oppisite. Love his writing and comic performances on TV, but I think he is out of his depth as a stand up, just resorts to cheap gross out gags with no substance to them.

Scott have you seen Seinfeld live? He came over to the UK recently for his first shows in like a decade but the ticket prices were so ridiculous. Would love to see him having been such a big fan of the TV show.

I'm a little surprised I'm the only one who likes "alternative" comedy. To me its whats getting hugely popular and its kind of taking over tv in a stand up comedy sense. Then again maybe its just because I surround myself with that type of comedy. I guess I can understand since most of you are from across the pond. Seems like everyone except the first 2 posts likes just the big names in comedy.

I haven't heard Gervais' comedy but I have heard a lot of people shitting on him for trying to teach stand up when he hasn't been doing it for long.

Hands down, it's gotta be Patrice O'Neal (RIP). In terms of currently living comedians though, I guess Dave Chappelle.

I haven't heard any of Gervais' material so I can't say of I like it or not but I was just saying what I've heard from those I enjoy but idk what they've said about his routine.

I used alternative comedy in quotes because that's what it's labeled as but I don't see much of a difference. Basically it's just another way of doing comedy that differentiates from the norm whether it be one liners, stories or some props ala Zach Galifinakis or Demetri Martin. Various types are people who do it are Marc Maron, Brian Posehn, Sklar Brothers, Todd Glass, Patton Oswalt, Sean Cullen, Tig Notaro, Scott Aukerman, Pete Holmes, Sarah Silverman and tons more. It's not really all that different from regular stand up to me but I guess it's enough for people to label it as such.
