Bill Nye, who in addition to being a kids science show host, is an expert on asteroids states that this should be a warning that the movies such as Armageddon and Deep Impact are based in real science facts. And that this Russian asteroid didn't even do half of what 2012DA14 would do. He also says that we shouldn't be too scared because we know about a lot of them and most of them could be diverted given enough time. Holy shit the actual explosion looks like a nuclear bomb going off and I would imagine the sound is pretty close to what a nuclear bomb sounds like as well. That is just insane but really, this has happened before and it seems that this always happens in Russia.

That happened in 1908 and basically leveled an entire forest so I guess that's what happens when a meteor explodes a little closer to the ground. Apparently, that explosion measured a 5.0 on the Richter scale and was equivalent to 20 megatons of TNT aka a good size nuclear bomb.

Hardly a what the fuck event. It's all but been confirmed that was a meteor exploding. No one witnessed it but that's basically accepted as what happened. Realistically every other theory that has been put forth attempts to explain it using theoretical physics. I'm sure if that same event happened today, it'd be confirmed as a meteor strike almost immediately. It's only cause it happened during the Cold War deep in the USSR that people even put forth these ridiculous theories.
