DAMN. 200 mil in a weekend.

It ended up being $207 million. Ridiculous number, broke the record by $38 million. It is going to have a massive drop off next week but $400 million is all but confirmed. The challenge now will be chasing Dark Knight's figure of $533 million to become the highest grosing super hero movie in the US, the worldwide figure for DK will easily be beaten by The Avengers but the domestic one is a bit tougher.

4. (NEW) The Pirates! Band of Misfits (Columbia Pictures, (sony) 6.5/10

The Pirates lacked the depth and sense of fun I was expecting, The Avengers was far more inventive than I was expecting thanks mostly to Mr Wheldon, but it still was not as witty or exciting as Cabin in the Woods the sleepr hit of the year so far. Hunger Games holds steady.

The Avengers has now grossed more than $1 billion worldwide after 19 days in theatres but note that it has only been in US theatres for 10 days. It is already up to 11th on the alltime list and will be up in fourth spot by next weekend. Incredible run and it keeps breaking records, it may even be able to become the third biggest movie of all time behind Avatar and Titanic. I am sure that Disney are trying to think of how they can create an Avengers 2 after seeing how big these numbers are.

Safe should be earning more money than that but I guess the film hasn't had much promotion really. Statham is an amazing actor though. Can't believe some of the ones above it are drawing well and more than Safe.

Avengers still going strong and The Dictator off to a nice start considering the competition.

 

[Troy]

The Avengers just doesn't want to slow down, easily the fastest movie to $450 million in the US and it should be able to top Dark Knight by the end of it's run with close to $550 million. The Dictator didn't do too badly although it is a fair bit down compared to what Borat and Bruno started with. Battleship bombed when you consider how big it's budget it, it deserves to bomb because the concept is terrible, based on the game but with added aliens.

MIB 3 comes out next week, could be a chance at $100 million if all goes well or it could start with less than $50 million if the word of mouth isn't there. Waiting so long between the second and third will have hurt the box office potential because the hype for the movies just aren't there anymore.

MIB off to a nice start but I expect them to slow down quite a bit after this next week, prob see that number cut in half easily.

I'm surprised that Hunger Games is still in the top 10 even after 10 weeks. Damn.

Shame The Dictator isn't drawing much, I thought it'd be more than that. It's budget alone was $65,000,000 so hopefully they can make a bit more than that back from it. I seen it this past Tuesday and it was pretty good, great acting from SBC with quite a few laughs, some are cheap comedy but some aren't and are great scenes.
