Crayo said:Religion can be used for some people as a way to cope with the stresses of life. They don't walk around and preach it, and they certainly do not judge others if they do not believe the same -- is that still nonsense to you? I'm just curious and I'm not attacking, but I've not really seen many people argue against those who use religion to better themselves as individuals (love thy neighbour for example), help other people in the right way, and to help them cope with life.
Religion is more than reading a book and absorbing that information.
I'm judging religion by what I've read in the religious texts themselves and not by anything else. If no one in the world practiced or believed in any religion, I would still hold the same opinion of it.
People can find inspiration through all sorts of things, whether it be art, religion, spirituality (somewhat separate from religion) or whatever. Still doesn't change the fact that so much of what is written in religious texts is oppressive, offensive, barbaric, outdated, and sometimes just plain silly. The philosophical views of morality are ok for the most part, but the supernatural aspect of it is pretty fantastical, and even that probably isn't a strong enough word for it.
Religions like Scientology and Mormonism also have people whose lives have been bettered by it and there's even groups out there that represent these religions that help others. Yet people laugh at both of them the first chance they get. Explain that one to me. Look at how people laugh at Tom Cruise or how his reputation has taken a bit of a hit just by being a Scientologist. I've even seen people breathe a sign of relief when they find out that so and so in Hollywood isn't a Scientologist like they were rumored to be (like Will Smith, for example.)
