Nature...Nurture...be careful not to take the individual's responsibly for their own actions out of the equation. That is the problem with "It's the gun's fault" arguments. We deflect the blame from the person who made the decision to an inanimate object. It has been proven, time and time and again that no matter what your background, you decide the direction of your life. Sooner or later, you have to get off the 'I had a bad childhood and bad parents' routine and grow up. If you need counselling, get some. But don't use it as a crutch or a prop the rest of your blessed life. The main prob is that the public in general are too eager to give some sicko an easy out. If he's nuts, get him some help. But, for God's sake, don't pat him on the head and tell him it's just his upbringing! lol...

I say that people stop discussing the issue and actually do something about it. It's going to keep happening if they don't do anything. These shootings have been a major problem in the United States for a very long time but they choose to do nothing and then when a tragedy like the shooting in Connecticut happens, we cry and whine about it. I'm so tired of this bullshit.

There are crazy people ou there.

no matter if they were in a shitty school, molested as a kid or beaten or just didn't get a hug....they would still have been crazy.

There was a time when you could put these people in a certain building where they would be monitored by professionals, instead of being let out in society to go crazy in places where you have access to guns.

Bring back real mental institutions where a parent can call the funny farm when their kid starts killing rabbits and kitties.

Bathroom in every class. Allow kids to bring in beverages. Automatic locks once class starts. It doesn't solve the issue but it sure does slow down the progress of a gunman.

I agree with you about the mental institutions and sanitoriums (sanitariums? difference?).

Many of the US' mental institutions were closed in the 1960's and 1970's. I'm not blaming One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but from a popular, social perspective, that movie turned A LOT of otherwise ambivalent Americans against the mental health system of institutionalization.

We need to bring them back. We can't just use the "here's some Zoloft. Go home now, you're all better" approach.

No, we can't. We want to try to "normalize" everybody and every sort of situation. If you don't take care of mental illness in society by providing more resources then how in the world can we prevent crazy situations like this from happening? Parents need to wake up and start to take their children's strange behavior seriously. There are usually signs that someone is mentally ill and requires help. Unfortunately, some parents choose to ignore that. Then again, some parents try but their children are on a stupid waiting list. It goes to show where our society's priorities are. "Let's spend all of our money on war because this country told us to get the fuck out rather than, "wow, we have a lot of crap to deal with in our country such as poverty, mental illness, CRIME......better start with that!"

That would be good until there's a fire....

Only locked from the outside, that's how my school has it at least.
Ah. Well when he mentioned sack lunches, beverages, and bathrooms, I got the impression the kids couldn't leave either.

My theory would have the teacher controlling the locks from in the class room or via a computer and still only lock from the outside.

Yeah I don't agree with that either. You can't seriously believe that legalizing abortion leads to a lower crime rate. I don't even understand how someone even fathomed that would make sense. Criminals are a product of their upbringing, not their womb.

I believe it because it has been proven and it makes sense. It wasn't some crackpot political commentator that works for Fox News or CNN that come up with it, the guys that found this are economists, they used the statistics out there and interpreted the data.

Criminals are a product of their upbringing and that is why legalising abortion worked. Criminals are more likely to come from poor disadvantaged areas, kids from those areas that get pregnant now had the opportunity to abort rather than bring up a child in a terrible situation which would likely lead them to crime. It broke the cycle and it reduced crime rates by a huge margin

Every other explanation out there for the large reduction in crime rates can be, and has been disproven, they may have had a small impact but the largest impact by far was legalising abortion.

But that still deals with the situation too late in the timeline. That starts working when the gunman is already on the school grounds, surely the best plan is to try to prevent it from happening and dealing with stopping it from when they get the guns or before.

So much foreigner stupidity in this thread.

People that don't live here and don't deal with ANY of our unique social issues feel the need to grasp wildly at the most pathetic strawman arguments, offering their expertise opinion, lol.

I should start telling the Euros that Football is dangerous and should be banned from all the hooliganism and drunken brawling.

There will always be crazy people trying to kill other people. You aren't going to change america so yes dealing with prevention is the only way.
