Really? You really don't see the similarities? How about the fact that research throughout several countries across the globe have proven the dangers of processed meat and linked heart disease directly to the ways those fast food chains produced their food? Or how about the fact that there are still no laws or any obligation on behalf of the fast food chains to list the ingredients of their product like virtually every other organic product in the country? Instead, the make them go to their websites to find ingredient listings and they know no one's going to do that. They also get a pass marketing their dangerous product to children, unlike alcohol and tobacco. And despite the hundreds of thousands of deaths caused by their products each year, none of them ever get charged with manslaughter. I'm sorry, but I really don't see how you don't see the comparison. "Choosing to eat McDonalds" is not the point. I seriously doubt any of the people who DIE from it CHOSE TO DIE either. Fast food and guns are similar in that they are allowed to be circulated legally throughout the country, except the former is legal for all ages to purchase and kills a hundred times more people.

I'll explain it for you then if you don't know the difference between food and a weapon. Fast food is food, its not designed to kill, its designed to feed people, any heart disease people get from it is an unintentional by product. A gun though unlike what some people seem to think is not a book end, its not a paper weight, its not a tiny awkward glass, it is a weapon. Guns were invented to kill other people during wars. Gun nuts love to bring up shit like fast food, death by car, etc. but those are accidents/using an object for an unintended purpose. How do you not get that? A gun is a weapon pure and simple, fast food is a food source that people know isn't healthy. You cant really compare some little kid getting fast food for their birthday and getting shot in the head by some piece of shit.

OK.... wow. How the hell do YOU know that Switzerland and Canada have less "crazy blueberries"? Seriously, I mean did you conduct your own head count? Did you go door to door in all 3 countries and jot down a list of every single mentally unstable person you encountered? That's an assumption you pulled out of your ass and you know it.

Here's an actual statistic for you:

In terms of total HOMICIDE rate, America is ranked #107th in the world with a rate of 4.2.

Top 10 countries in homicide rate:

1. Honduras 91.6
2. El Salvador 69.2
3. Ivory Coast 56.9
4. Jamaica 52.2
5. Venezuela 45.1
6. Belize 41.4
7. US Virgin Islands 39.2
8. Guatemala 38.5
9. Saint Kitts and Nevis 38.2
10. Zambia 38.0

And in terms of TOTAL deaths, America isn't a Top 10 country either. We're actually surpassed by BOTH super powers Russia and China, as well as our North American neighbors Mexico. Brazil is the world leader with 40,974 homicides per year.

So, even though America kills more people with GUNS, we do not have an extraordinary issue with homicide in general. Take the guns away, and people still find a way to kill... clearly evidenced by the 106 other countries that you're more likely to be killed in.

Because countries like Switzzerland have a higher gun-people ratio, a higher percentage of the population have guns but they don't run around shooting each other. Not trying to be insulting to all Americans but something about the American pshyce makes shooting at each other cool. America may not be number one in homicides but you had 10,000+ people killed by handguns last year. Surely you can agree that, that is a problem? And yes there are other ways to kill but nothing is as easy as shooting someone, that Chinese guy that went nuts in a school with a knife didn't kill anyone. Those parents are getting to see their kids again while in America 20 kids have Christmas presents under the tree they'll never get to open.

And mass shootings were NEVER common here until 2012 when gun control became a political agenda of the Democratic party. You can interpret that implication however you please. Asia and Oceania have more documented mass murder sprees than North and South America combined, so you're wrong about that as well.
[/QUOTE]

I'll steal a line off of you Really? You're really claiming that? All my life I've heard constant stories about nutjobs going berserk in schools to the point where I hear about a mass shooting on the news and I know its in America and the saddest part is it doesn't shock me anymore. Their commonplace which is the worst part of it and yet nothing is ever done about it. If they had of cracked down on guns 20 years ago then there would be less guns on the street now. I just hope somebody does something to change this, Obama has nothing to lose he's in his second term. But if nothing else hopefully more parents start homeschooling kids because the schools, even primary schools in little towns aren't safe.

But this sort of topic always gets heated because its an emotional topic some people want to see things like this end while others dont want to lose their Merrican right to bare arms just to try and save a few lives. Guns > human life is wrong. One thing I hope we can all agree on though is that this sort of thing shouldn't happen and something needs to change.

Exactly what I was looking for. I hope you're angry that I'm shooting a DANGEROUS ASSAULT RIFLE at paper targets. I hope it makes you appalled that I'm carrying a loaded HANDGUN on my body, in my vehicle.

Now do some finger wagging and tell us what's wrong and how we need to be exactly like Canada, in all it's Utopian glory.

Why do you need to walk around with a loaded handgun on you? That gun loving pshyce is part of the problem, everybody wants a gun, so guns are commonplace and people dont think twice about them.

I dont think I've said it yet and I feel ashamed for it but RIP to all this kids and teachers. While we're sitting here bickering all those families have forever been changed for th worse and at Christmas time no less. They should be having fun with their families not having their families mourn them. RIP.

The guy who suggests people should be shot for their religious beliefs is suggesting I'm a blueberry. Ironic.

When you can cite the scripture where it states "God hates fags" and "soldiers deserve to die", I'll stand corrected.

WBC never has and never will be about religion, they are professional hatemongering trolls.

Jesus fuck, I'm very well aware of what the difference is between food and guns. But it seems you aren't aware of the corners fast food distributors cut in order to mass produce, and they do it completely aware of the health risks to their consumers and hide those risks from them in order to get away with it. Read up on it.

Who's talking about the Chinese story? China has MORE homicides than the United States and a much higher homicide rate. Period. There is no comparison. China is far worse. So just because they aren't killing people with GUNS, that means the US has a bigger problem? Are you out of your mind? Homicide is homicide regardless of the instrument used to kill. And America is NOT one of the world's most homicidal countries. You should actually look at the numbers instead of blindly subscribing to Anti-American propaganda.

I tried really hard to find a single factual statement in this mess, but all I got from is that you selectively follow news topics. In fact there were only 3 school shootings as long as I can remember... Columbine (15 years ago), Virginia Tech, and now this one. Yeah, that's really not "constant stories" as you put it.

It's called "freedom of speech". I don't agree with their sentiments either, but at least I'm not suggesting they deserve to die because of their misplaced faith. So you should think really long and hard before calling anyone a blueberry ever again.

Wow, since when did we become a bunch of Pollyannas that think everybody can be reasoned with, trusted or will obey the law?

Amazing. Ban guns. Brilliant. Criminals and cops are the only ones with guns. Those stuck in the middle with no protection pay the highest price.
It's the same bunch of people who cry that we should just talk to every dictator and war monger out there and they will be reasonable and the world can sing together in perfect harmony. Bull...Not all people can be reasoned with...not every person will obey the law...not every person is going to act in a calm, reasonable way.

OBVIOUSLY...look at this guy who did the shooting...It's not the gun...it's the psycho behind the gun and I for one (although I've never owned a gun) am thinking more, not less about getting a gun for protection. My family is worth more to me than your sensibilities. EVEN if the guns all disappeared, we'd still be clamoring for a way to protect ourselves and the ones we love.

Personally, I don't trust the government or the UN to have that much power...sorry. The rest of the world and their crime free/no gun culture (notice the sarcasm) can do what they want. You wanna start banning guns...come get some...

I don't think you are aware of the difference so I'll say it again a gun is a weapon designed to kill, the guys behind McDonalds didn't sit down one day and think "how can we give everyone heart disease?" no they made cheap, unhealthy food. A gun is a device designed, built and used to kill.

The US has a higher GUN related problem, that's the discussion here people can swerve it elsewhere to protect their beloved guns and shit on human life but America has a huge gun problem. You should read what I typed I never said America has more homicides than anyone else it has more gun related murder than anyone else. Can you admit that 10,000 dead by handguns is too much? or does human life mean that little to you? I'm not blindly bashing America, Im bashing its gun crazy culture that never chabges no matter how many nut jobs go on a rampage. And I brought up the Chinese story because you keep going on about how people will find other ways to kill, well that Chinese guy tried with a knife but he couldn't kill anyone while in America 20 kids under the age of 10 are dead.

Gun nuts love to shit on potential solutions so whats your answer to curbing this problem? Because ignoring it/accepting it is not acceptable.

Yes, people like me are the problem. I'm trained in Firearm Safety by Federal Law Enforcement, I grew up hunting and eating what game I took from the earth, and I've fired thousands of rounds without ever having an accident, or mass murdering people in a mall or school. I went out this afternoon and shot a couple hundred rounds at paper targets, and I smiled with satisfaction knowing there's a hipster crying in Europe or Canada somewhere who will sob to the United abomiNations that they need to take my guns away.

People could argue about gun control until they are blue in the face, guns are not the issue, and no amount of control will ever stop gun violence, it is the people who can obtain guns that are the issue.

If there were no guns in this kids house then this would never have happened. He wouldn't have gone to the trouble of finding a gang to buy a gun from illegally. The ease of access to guns made this crime possible. Without the guns in the house this kid would have just been depressed and may have killed himself but he would never have gone out and killed dozens of people.

This is just one of the most shocking and sad things I have ever heard of, its a sad and screwed up sometimes and living in America must sometime be so scary. Something has to be done about this kind of thing, I don't know what, but something.

This is so true. I don't know how people can be happy with a situation where they feel that they need to carry a gun on them to feel safe. If it every got to that stage in Australia I would leave because it would have meant that Australia would have gone backwards by a mile.

OK....

Top 10 countries in homicide rate:

1. Honduras 91.6
2. El Salvador 69.2
3. Ivory Coast 56.9
4. Jamaica 52.2
5. Venezuela 45.1
6. Belize 41.4
7. US Virgin Islands 39.2
8. Guatemala 38.5
9. Saint Kitts and Nevis 38.2
10. Zambia 38.0

And in terms of TOTAL deaths, America isn't a Top 10 country either. We're actually surpassed by BOTH super powers Russia and China, as well as our North American neighbors Mexico. Brazil is the world leader with 40,974 homicides per year.

I'm glad you finally resorted to petty name-calling and admitted you aren't on my level with this conversation.

Now please leave.

Australia hasn't had a mass shooting like this since 1996 when strict gun controls were brought in, they have worked extremely well here but the difference is the attitude of the general population. Australians wanted change because guns aren't ingrained in our culture unlike the US.

With regards to the homicide statistics you will note that the majority if not all the countries listed above the US aren't as advanced as the US. As a country becomes more advanced and successful crime should drop by a notably margin. US as one of the most advanced countries in the world should

Also mass shootings have been common in the US for decades, it is wrong to claim that they only started in 2012. You yourself noted some well known examples like Columbine and Virginia Tech which occured well before 2012.

In fact there were only 3 school shootings as long as I can remember... Columbine (15 years ago), Virginia Tech, and now this one. Yeah, that's really not "constant stories" as you put it.

Comparing US to China isn't a good thing. US should be miles ahead of China when it comes to crime as US is a much more advanced country and has many fewer people in poverty. China having more homicides should be expected and that doesn't mean that US having a lower homicide rate is a good thing when the rate is still high.

There may have been three main school shootings but there have been many, many mass shootings in the US over the past couple of decades. Whenever a news story comes up about a mass shooting the majority of the time it has happened in the US, it is a more common occurence there then elsewhere in the world.

There are many more examples of mass shootings, like the 2011 Tuscan shooting of a political candidate that killed half a dozen and injured a dozen more, Geneva County massacre in 2010 where a dozen were killed, the Dark Knight killer that killed a dozen and injured more than fifty, Westroads Mall shooting from 2009 that killed close to a dozen, Fort Hood from 2009 where a dozen were killed and a couple of dozen more injured, Luby's massacre from the early nineties that killed two dozen and was the deadliest before Virginia Tech. They are the main ones that I can remember of the top of my head to go along with those already listed.

Overall, and this isn't directed at anyone specifically, I fail to see why anyone needs to own an automatic or semi-automatic weapon. There is no need for anyone, even for their apparent "personal safety" to carry something like that. Yes criminals and police may have them but you may notice that very, very rarely are police or criminals the ones doing these mass shootings. Most of the time they just kill criminals. The majority of the cases listed would never have occured if it wasn't so easy to obtain guns, these people weren't criminals (before they committed these crimes) they were disturbed people that snapped and decided to kill. If they couldn't get guns I highly, highly doubt that they would have killed dozens of people.

Basically all I got out of that was "I hate all other countries that aren't America. Shut the fuck up. You're making yourself look like a fucking blueberry.

Well, RRS, you're not reading very deep. What you should have got was that there is a perception in Canada and Europe apparently that anyone in America who owns and uses guns is a Redneck blueberry. I was born and raised in Tennessee and now live in Oklahoma and am insulted by that kind of classification. Don't hate the rest of the world...we just don't owe you any explanations...we had a government come and try and confiscate our guns oh...over 200 years ago. That didn't end well.

I'm sorry. I'm just cynical enough not to trust the world to play fair or my government to be there when I need them to protect me. ESPECIALLY in the kind of world we live in. We are moments away from anarchy...good luck protecting yourself then with your fists...

I'm just saying that part of the problem is guns are so ingrained in the American psyche, they're commonplace and nobody thinks twice about having one or being given a rifle for joining a bank. That's part of the problem, sure many people use them responsibly but soccer moms cruising around in their SUVs with shotguns in the back just seems excessive and that's part of the American lifestyle. Here in Australia after Port Arthur they did something to stop any such instance ever happening again, they tightened down on gun laws and bought back assault rifles to get as many of them off the street as possible. Kids in the supposed greatest country on earth should be able to go to school without being victims of a madmans rampage. I just hope that something chances, either the laws, the pshyce towards guns or people stop sending their kids to schools, I know if I lived in the States my little girl would be looking at a life of home schooling if we didn't just up and leave.

You wouldn't understand why a Soccer mom needs a shotgun in her mini van because you dont live in a country with nearly the social problems and poverty that we do. Not all of us get to live in wonderful Sweden, the Faroe Islands, or peace loving Canada, where I'm told there is no crime and the streets are paved with gold and money just grows on trees. You don't understand our gun culture because your government disarmed all of you, and your indoctrinating state-run media calls us a bunch of barbarous savages, because you want the United abomiNations to disarm us. I agree, Kids should be able to go to school without fear, but up and "fleeing the shores for a boat" is a knee-jerk reaction that isn't realistic for most people.

Oh man, a few bad incidents! I better get on a plane and fly to Switzerland so I can be safe! Hurry! We're going to be murdered any moment by some dangerous American!

But I still can't understand why people not only accept it but are happy with it. Surely in a country like the US you shouldn't need to carry a gun on you for protection, this isn't somewhere like El Salvador or Brazil. It shouldn't have gotten to this level where everyone is afraid of everyone and feels that they need to carry a gun on them. I would have thought that people want would to turn away from the culture that keeps needlessly killing people each year. Not just mass shootings but suicides as well.

The US has, I believe, the second highest rate of suicide by gun. It is an easy solution if someone is depressed that they can reach for that gun and shoot themselves before thinking it through. If they didn't have easy access they may not go through with it because they don't want to suffer, then the moment passes and they realise that they don't want to go through with it.

I am glad that Australian government disarmed everyone. I walk the streets and I feel no fear, I can walk the streets at night and I know that I won't get shot and killed. I don't need a gun to protect me because there isn't that culture here even in the poorer areas. There is no need for me, the average joe, to carry a weapon and I wouldn't live in a country where that wasn't the case.

With the hunting culture here, I wouldnt be surprised to find out that the percentage of gun owners by population is around the same as the states. Also within the last few years there was a shooting outside of Toronto's Eaton's Centre, a mass shooting inside the same mall, a drive by in the Little Italy district of Toronto, that Lucca Magnotta idiot, the guy on the Greyhound bus that cut off a guys head and ate it, The Pickton Farmer, etc. Nobody ever said there is 0 violence in Canada, just that the numbers are down comparred to the states.

We get all your same television & movies, we hear all the same news casts, we have the illegal guns on the streets, and we have legal ones in our homes, so really why do the Americans have more gun violence than Canada?
