Probably because the WWF was infinitely more popular at that time and Bret made the move more famous than Sting ever did.

Also, they weren't in the same company when either was establishing themselves or came off a major run.

Not entirely true at all. It wasn't until around 2000 that I stopped calling the move the Scorpion Deathlock. Sting was a Main event player and World Champion in company just as big as the WWE at the time Bret was still teaming with The Anvil. That line probably happened somewhere around 1991 for quite a few southern US fans lol
