Shelton Benjamin vs. Ric Flair
FUCK YEAH! The debut of "AIN'T NO STOPPING ME........NO!" An awesome visual that accidentally gets caught on camera of Shelton having this massive grin on his face while Flair is doing Flair things doing his entrance, that's gotta be something. Flair attempts mind games early but it backfires as Shelton uses his quickness, youth, and armature wrestling to get the better. Flair who is probably having the time of his life and has been on 150% since mania continues to bump his ass off. It's all Shelton in the early going until the ref pulls Shelton down at 5 during the corner punches allowing Flair to kick his knee out from under him. Flair works it for several minutes setting him up for the figure-four and he does lock it in but Shelton rolls over, so Flair uses that momentum to roll back over and grabs the ropes for a break. Shelton's selling is pretty good for the most part but towards the end, he just stops selling it. Randomly, Flair brings in a chair but the ref takes it away so Flair and Shelton begin to slug it out. Well, that was pointless; Anyway, Shelton connects with an enziguri followed by a heel kick. Shelton begins to make a comeback with Flair bumping as big as possible to make Shelton look amazing. He suplexes Flair into the ring but again, Flair begs off just to deliver a killer chop. He heads up top but thinks better so he takes out a pair of brass knucks but he makes the mistake of turning his back to Shelton and Shelton hits the corner splash followed by a flying clothesline off the top for the win. **1/2
Backstage: Todd Grisham interviews Randy Orton, he asks Orton if Shelton beating Flair might be a bad Oman for things to come for Evolution tonight, Orton says Shelton has only been on Raw for a few weeks and people act like he’s the 2nd coming. Orton says he’s on a winning streak of his own as well as being the longest IC champ in 7 years, beating Legend after Legend, after Legend. But tonight, he's gonna earn respect and beat down Mick Foley or Cactus Jack whoever comes out tonight making him have to retire. Orton says he’s seen all the footage Of Jack, but he’s goona show Foley a side of Orton he’s never seen before and tonight he’s gonna put the old dog that is Mick Foley down and out of his misery, once and for all.
Jonathan Coachman vs. Tajiri
This is rough, Tajiri has trouble beating up Coach, no really. This is like 6 and a half minutes and Coach controls like 5 of those minutes. Coach works the leg, and Tajiri's selling is good. Garrison Cade runs out and punches Tajiri back into a schoolboy from Coach to win. FUCK EVERYTHING! *1/2
Christian & Trish Stratus vs. Chris Jericho
GAWD DAMN! Trish looks great tonight. This is one of those angle matches, it's basically just here to add to the story of the feud and keep things going longer. Good thing is it's mostly Christian vs. Jericho, who have great chemistry against one another and neither are afraid to lay their shit in against one another. I like that they built off some of the spots from the Mania match and had counters for that, plus Jericho keeps trying to attack Trish whenever he can. Of course, we get some Trish/Jericho interactions when Jericho is down, but as soon as Jericho almost grabs her she quickly tags Christian back in. Christian is catapult into Trish in the corner, taking her out and Jericho hits a step up enzuigiri to Christian for the win. pretty good, not Mania level or anything, but this a good addition to the chapter. **3/4
Backstage: Eugene is looking at the latest Diva's special magazine when he walks in the women's locker room. Gail Kim is just in her underwear. When seeing him, she screams, so Eugene screams as well. Molly Holly comes out without her wig screaming, Eugene then pats her on her head so she freaks out looking for anything to put on her head. William Regal rushes in the locker room to pull Eugene out., he tries to apologize for Eugene, but Kim's lack of clothes makes him forget what he was saying. So Gail yells at him to get out.
WWE Woman's Championship: Victoria vs. Lita
BAD! Like really bad, and they finally get a ton of time too. They do some mat wrestling start it’s not terrible but it’s not good either. They lock up after a break then fall to the floor with neither one breaking. They somewhat attempt to pick up the pace as they attempt to do awful RVD/Lynn rolling pin sequence, but I will give them credit, they do it at the right time, unlike Lynn/RVD who do it after 25 minutes. Victoria begins to work the back and neck, Lita does do one good spot out of the tilt-a-whirl side slam she counters into a head scissors she has a very weird comeback. Lita still rushes everything, it's sloppy and mistimes a bunch of stuff, it still looks like she's going through the moves and sequences in her head so none of it looks natural. Late in the match, Victoria hit a moonsault but Lita rolls in, so, Victoria still manages to get a piece of her. The match would end when out of nowhere Victoria would hit the inside cradle for the win. Post-Match: Molly Holly and Gail Kim run out and lays out both women out ‘cause they knew the match sucked.
No Holds Barred Match For The WWE Intercontinental Championship: Randy Orton vs. Cactus Jack (Evolution Barred from Ringside)
Orton coming out with his hilarious adjace version of Barbie
, i'm gonna call her Crissy. Jack comes out with Barbie, Orton tries to swing his over the rope but the barbed wire gets caught onto the top rope and it just falls apart. AWESOME! sequence with Orton doing everything he can to avoid getting hit with barbie, he uses his quickness to get out of dodge several times. They fight over Barbie on the floor until Orton hits him in the head with a trashcan three times on the floor. Cactus comes back with a trashcan shot of his own before rolling him back in, Cactus beats him up in the ring without using weapons for a few minutes even hitting him with a baseballs slide sending Orton to the floor, he follows up with a swinging neck breaker and head up top so Orton crawls away. They fight up the ramp with Orton hitting a side suplex on the ramp for two. Backslide gets another two before Orton grabs Jack’s hair and slams him off the ramp for another two. The sounds of Foley's back and heat hitting the steel sounds so sick. Orton then throws him into the steps before grabbing Barbie. He tries to rake it against Cactus's face but Jack stops it by using his hands to block it, it's a struggle for a few seconds until Cactus low blows him and goes back on offense. Mr. Socko comes out, but stops and picks up the bat instead, he lets the crowd pick which one wins and the bat does so he nails Orton in the head with it. Orton is busted open now as Jack begins to punch away at the open wound. Cactus begins attacking the head with straight punches and the running knee. Cactus again picks up the bat and again rakes the face of Orton. AMAZING! Visual is Orton running and crawling away, he begins to slowly climb the ropes and has this amazing "FEAR" facial expression as he looks into the hard camera.
Cactus again takes the bat and rakes it some against Orton's head before dropping the leg on the bat which is placed between Orton’s legs. Jack then heads to the floor and takes out gasoline and a lighter. The fans are going crazy. Before he's about to light Barbie on fire, Eric Bischoff comes out and threatens to stop Backlash if he uses the gas. Cactus throws the gas down and then just uses a cookie sheet. CACTUS ISN'T DONE HE FUKCING PULLS OUT A HUGE BOARD THAT IS COVERED IN BARBED-WIRE. They fight over it and tease Orton going onto it but he throw's powder into Cactus's eyes and scoop slams him onto it for two. Orton then places the board in the corner and they do another AMAZING! Tease with it. It looks like Orton is about to throw him into the wire but at but the last second Orton reverses and sends him in the wire board. As Jack is hung up in it Orton dropkicks him in and throws the board into his head. Orton then grabs a bag of tacks and unloads them into the ring, Orton being the nice guy that he is, begins to spread them for more coverage. He goes for the RKO but Cactus counters by throwing Orton onto them back first. Randy facial sell of great pure pain, agony, and disbelief is on another level. They now brawl up the ramp and to the back for a split second, until Cactus brings him back out, he throws him off the fuckin’ stage through some boards set up on the floor. BANG! BANG! The ref calls for the EMT’s Jack looks like he’s about to walk away but decides NO! THAT’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH and connects with the Cactus Elbow from the stage, but that only gets two. HOLY SHIT! They eventually come back to the ring, and Jack hits the double arm DDT for two, Orton then rolls to the floor and picks up Barbie but as Cactus goes to grab him Orton hits him in the head with it. Orton hits him first in the kidneys and then to the back. He goes to hit him again, but Cactus counters by locking in the CLAW! Orton is almost out until he hits an uppercut followed by a low blow. Jack applies the claw again but Orton hits the RKO out of desperation for two.Cactus comes charging at him but Orton hits a weird version of the RKO onto Barbie for the win. STILL HOLDS UP! STILL AMAZING! Maybe the most violent WWE hardcore match ever. Hunter/Cactus was brutal as hell, but this had everything and more. ****1/2
After the match; Batista and Flair run down, and help Orton to the back.
Backstage: Ric Flair and Batista are helping Orton to the medical room when Triple H comes up to him. He says that is what Evolution is all about and he went from being a Legend Killer to being a Legend. Todd Grisham then runs up to Hunter saying Evolution is now one and one tonight and asks him what his chances are tonight. Hunter says he's been waiting for this night since Mania, he says beating Shawn would be sweet but beating Benoit here in his hometown on “Chris Benoit Day” Will be money. Lightning will not strike twice.
La Résistance vs.The Hurricane & Rosey
I have no idea why this is here, unless WWE wanted to kill the crowd, and if that was the goal. Well, they succeeded. Boy did they succeed. The superhero team gets the better for the majority of this until Hurricane goes up top but Conway catches him and kills him with a sick swinging neckbreaker. Resistance iso Hurricane and it's pretty basic, Eugene comes down as Rosey makes the hot tag and takes out both French fucks. Eugene plays peek a boo with the flags as Hurricane hits a high crossbody onto both French guys, Eugene gets in the ring and begins to run the ropes. Then Regal comes out as Hurricane hits the Eye of the Storm on Conway for the win. It is what it is. *
KANE vs. EDGE
Short at 6 minutes and a half, Edge is clearly rusty. Plus he looks like he did nothing on his time off but rehab and eat steroids. Kane works the broken wrist for a few minutes, it pretty good. Very methodical. The crowd don't give a shit about the match as they mainly chant "You screwed Bret" to Earl and "We Want Bret" Edge makes a decent comeback he goes to use the cast but ref Earl Hebner stops him allowing Kane to kick him in the face. He misses the clothesline off the top. which allows Edge to hits the impeller DDT, Kane sits up and misses the spear Hebner ducks as well so Edge kicks Kane in the balls, he hits him with the cast and finishes him off with the spear for the win. 6 minutes of nothing, they just stuck it in first gear and it didn’t go anywhere. *
Triple Threat Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Benoit
Same formula as the Mania match, lots of 2 in 1 sells. Benoit/Shawn is good, Shawn/Hunter is fine. They keep knocking Benoit off the apron so it can just be them, but that pisses Benoit off enough that he comes in cleaning house with Suplex and chops. Benoit whips Shawn to the floor as =he locks in the crossface on Hunter but he sees Shawn coming so he knocks him to the floor and sends him into the barricade. He does it again before heading up top but Hunter cuts him with headbutts, HOLY SHIT! I don't remember a time Triple H did a headbutt before. Shawn knocks Benoit off the top rope before hitting the electric chair on Hunter for two. They continue to go back and forth now, with Benoit selling on the floor. Hunter hits him with a facebuster as Benoit hits the flying headbutt on Shawn for two. Benoit tosses Hunter to the floor as he tries to German Shawn but Shawn elbows out, he attempts the flying elbow but Benoit ducks and he whips out the ref. Shawn gets knocked to the floor as Benoit attempts to lock in the Sharpshooter on Hunter and does but he sees Shawn so he locks him in the crossface instead. OH SHIT! Shawn locks Benoit in the Sharpshooter as earl Heber runs down asking Benoit if he wants to quit
Lawler makes a ton of jokes about this until Shawn breaks the hold to punch Hunter to the floor again. Huge “YOU SCREWED BRET” chant as Shawn panders to the crowd long enough for Benoit to lock him in the crossface but Hunter breaks it up with an elbow to the head. They clearly begin trying to fill up time as they start redoing over moves and stuff from before, Benoit and Hunter are on the floor when Shawn heads to the top, he attempts a crossbody but mistiness it so badly that he flies over their head and crashes through the announce table
Shawn 0 Air&Table 2 Benoit looks over at Shawn with empathy allowing Hunter to attack him from behind sending him into the ringpost and then the steps.really good Benoit/Hunter sequence for a few minutes, Hunter hits the pedigree but he’s too worn down to make the cover straight away, but when he does out of nowhere Shawn breaks up the cover at two. Hunter and Shawn go at it. He hits the elbow off the top and signals for Sweet Chin Music, but Benoit begins to get on the apron so Shawn kicks him instead, that allows Hunter to low blow Shawn for two. Shawn counters out of the pedigree by backdropping Hunter to the floor, but as Hunter is on the floor he pulls out the sledgehammer. Shawn slowly gets to his feet and Hunter comes in and hits him in the lower back with it. Hunter then goes to do it again but Benoit trips him up and pulls him to the floor but again Hunter gets the better sending him onto the steps. Hunter then sets up Benoit up to pedigree, but Benoit counters by slingshotting Hunter into the post and Hunter bumps into the first row out the crowd AWESOME! Shawn signals for Sweet Chin Music but Benoit catches the boot and counters into Sharpshooter and Shawn taps out just before Hunter can stop him. This was so damn good, I don’t love it as much as I used to as a kid or even 4 years ago when i last watched it. And it's nowhere near as good as Mania. It really didn't need to be 30, cut 5 to 7 minutes off and maybe it would have been a classic. ***1/2
