- There is said to be major concern among some of WWE's midcarders in regards to how the WWE Network will affect their status with the company and their pay. It's a long shot but if WWE ends up putting all of their pay-per-views on the Network, or even the bigger events, then a lot of talents could potentially lose out on their pay-per-view bonuses.

Pwpix

I can see it but realistically the guys who should eat the ppv pie will get theirs in Cena, Punk, Rey, Orton, and so on. Makes no sense to plump up checks for shit like Khali and Hornswoggle getting in ppv to me anyway.

@deezy the makers of mlb.tv are apparently handling things

The Life Of Rey Mysterio. You know since Rey is always home with an injury, why not just film the Mysterio family in a reality TV Show? I'd watch it.

I don't see why midcarders should get a piece of the PPV pie, they already have a downside gurantee. This isn't the 80s, where everyone is paid on ticket sales, this is like UFC, the headliners make the big cheques because people are paying to see them, while the undercarders are just lucky to be on the card. Want better pay? Get your ass up the ranks.

I agree. It's like a middle card boxer expecting a chunk of Floyd's money when we all know Floyd's sold the damn event.

WWE has reportedly enlisted the help of MLB.tv to help them with online streams for the WWE Network. They want to make sure that their online streams don't crash when they get a lot of viewers.

As for the WWE Network's annual budget, it's reportedly about $50 million a year.

I don't computer stuff, I visit the internet, I don't live on it. Here's hoping MLB.TV is a good provider. Don't want this to go all Obamacare. Because rasslin fans are for more vicious than FoxNewz.

50 mil would mean they would need atleast 500000 subcribers for the whole year to make a profit.

I used the mlb app for the free preview before. They are widely thought to have the best streaming capabilities. I'm likely using a ps3 or roku anyhow so as long as its about the quality of game time for LP broadband, I'm good.

I still hold out hope that it will be available internationally but given the TV rights in the UK and probably elsewhere around the world, I can't see it.

It it was global, I think it would truly be ground breaking. I'd assume the UK, Japan, India, and Australia would eat it up along with the USA, Canada, and Mexico. They would never have a problem reaching a number they need. I wonder if you guys countries TV deals are coming up like they are over here

NXT still has an archaic deal with The Score(now Sportsnet 360), pretty sure that deal was until 2015, and that's from way back when that 1 hour show was called ECW. They also have an exclusive agreement with WWE for airing in Canada, its the station that plays Raw, Smackdown, NXT, and Vintage.

If this means I don't have have to pay 50 dollars a month anymore for a B PPV, then I'm just fine with this. PPV prices have been way too high for too long, with not enough reason to buy.

Really not sure, but given we have to pay anywhere around $50 to $60 a month to watch all these WWE programs and then the vast majority of PPV's too, you could see why people would be tempted by it. I just wonder if they could do like a filter on the network or something, where in countries such as the UK where we obviously have deals to broadcast certain programs, they can filter it off of their network so we can't watch RAW/SD etc on there but the rest of all their content.

If WWE was to air this in international markets, it isn't hard to think they could just blackout certain shows and air different shows during their PPVs or Raws that are locked into international deals.

CFO of wwe speaks

Barrios offered the latest comments on a proposed Network during a presentation at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference on Tuesday, December 10.

Barrios noted the pros and cons of distributing via the Internet - or "over-the-top" models - such as Netflix. One specific con is that WWE would incur all costs, as opposed to sharing costs if they distributed the Network through a traditional cable/satellite provider.

Barrios flashed back to last year's conference when he noted the technology was not ready to handle Network distribution via over-the-top, but that has changed since late 2012.

"I was here 12 months ago and people were asking me then and I said we just don't see the data to say that it’s there yet, now we see the data there. It doesn’t mean we are going that way, but it is now a viable option," Barrios said, dousing water on the idea that the Network is absolutely set for Internet distribution only, but saying it is more likely.

"One of the things that happened over the last 12 months has been happening for quite a while and we have been monitoring it for quite a while, is the consumption of long form video over-the-top and we all have Netflix to thank for this," Barrios said.

"They have done the spade work of creating the environment and the consumption habit of consumers to watch long form video over-the-top. So this, earlier this year we said where two years ago we didn't think there was enough of that happening to make a network viable over-the-top, we now believe it is viable over-the-top."

However, Barrios said WWE is still seeking a distribution deal through traditional providers.

"We continue to work with the MVPDs, see if we can knockout a deal in traditional distribution. If not, we have that option," Barrios said. "We could do it at our own discretion. In either case the economics are differen... If you went down each line item they differ between traditional and over-the-top distribution. Pricing is different, splits are different, costs are different."

Barrios added later: "If you go over-the-top you have significantly more costs, you have to do things like CDN costs, credit card fees, customer service. If you go traditional that essentially is covered up in the split that you are paying the MVPDs."

The bottom line for either model - or a combination of both - is WWE needs one million subscribers at $10-15 per month to break even. 2-4 million subscribers would then begin to double and triple WWE's revenue potential, even as WWE "cannibalizes" PPV business.

- Barrios talked in-depth about the effect on PPV business. He suggested WWE would continue to offer PPVs through traditional distribution, as well as through the Network for monthly subscribers, and they would hope the traditional distribution would eventually go away as the Network absorbs PPV business.

"Obviously a really successful network means the pay-per-view business slowly goes away and that number I gave you on the network, the incremental includes that cannibalization," Barrios told the audience.

Barrios also noted on the PPV business that WWE recognizes a $45-65 PPV event is "pretty expensive in today's world where this is so much content out there," which is why WWE wants to bundle the PPV events with the tape library and original content offered through the Network to make "everything our fans is clamoring for all in one place."

The bundle idea has not gone over well with traditional cable/satellite distributors, though.

"We’ve been working at this for a while. We’ve been working with the MVPDs, the same pitch I just gave you here, let's transform the pay-per-view business together, grow the business for both of us. Quite frankly it's been a bit of a slog, having those discussions but we continue to have them," Barrios said.

- WWE's Chief Strategy and Financial Officer George Barrios spoke at the UBS Annual Global Media and Communications Conference today. Here are some notes:

* If WWE were to leave USA Network, USA would go from #1 in prime-time to #4 or #5, which gives WWE leverage.

* Barrios said any top 50 network could pick up RAW or SmackDown and it would get them into the top 10

* WWE viewers watch their TV shows like a sports shows and sports are getting big increases in rights fees.

* They still may start the WWE Network on TV and not the internet. On the internet, WWE still needs 1 million subscribers per month to break even because there are additional costs they wouldn't have running a network on TV.

* They are hoping to sign new contracts for RAW and SmackDown by the end of April.

* Barrios noted that WWE gets one-fifth to one-tenth the money for their programming per viewer watching than NHL, NASCAR, NBA and MLB.

* They believe India will be huge for them long term.

* They believe their TV is more valuable than NASCAR, which gets six times as much money, because their viewer numbers are the same but NASCAR viewers are far more skewed over age 40.

* One year ago, WWE's data showed doing a network on the internet wasn't viable. Today they believe it is because of changing viewer habits

F4W.
They did make spike relevant in the top 10 and could do the same for FX and Fox Sports 1
