Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system will be launched to consumers in 'late October'.

So confirmed Tami Reller, corporate vice president of Windows, to partners attending Microsoft's worldwide partner conference in Toronto.
The OS will be released to manufacturing in the first week of August, and business users will get it around the same time, with those versions going out "as early as the beginning of August", according to MS (via ZDNet).

Video game support is expected to be a major part of the new OS, with MS having announced the integration of Xbox Live into the platform, and speculation that it may be capable of playing Xbox 360 games.

Ugh, not a fan of Windows 8 from what I've seen so I'll probably not be getting it. It just isn't the type of OS for me. I'm not liking that there is no start bar or all the other stuff. It is more for someone who has a touch screen monitor. I just hate it and I would rather stick with my Windows 7.

Seven is actually surprisingly good. About 1.000.000.000 times better than anyone expected it to be after the Vista debacle.

The second revision of Windows XP (the one without all the bugs) is still the best Windows ever released, though.

I'd rather a Mac over Windows 8 anyday.

I never said anything about Windows 7. It has a nice concept. Then again I use a mac due to my photography and graphical needs.

Windows 7 is going to be way better than Windows 8. I'm not a fan of this move toward cloud computing and internet integration. I actually just bought a computer a couple days ago so I'm eligible for a free Windows 8 upgrade if I should choose to upgrade but I really like Windows 7. Shame they didn't give it a longer life cycle. I might buy a new laptop before Windows 8 comes out because I think I'll want to stick with Windows 7 for a few more years to come.

If I could, I would still be running XP today. In fact, we still have it on the desktop at home (lappie has Vista - UGH! - and netbooks have 7).

Heck, if I could, I'd probably still be running Windows 98! Now THAT was a solid OS.

This just looks like a pathetic attempt at being Apple. Which begs the question of WHY ANYONE would want to be Apple.

I don't see why everyone is complaining? (No offense).

I can easily point out what has been mentioned in the thread as bad- and how it is not bad. Someone up for a challenge? :D

1. The missing start button/bar etc. - Actually, there is an option of reverting to the old desktop like setting for people who don't have touch computers.
2. Looks like Mac - WTF? How come? The tiles have always been an innovation of Windows. They are sleeker and much more Windows like rather than Mac.

Microsoft is trying to bridge the gap between Tablets and PCs by developing an OS that can work on both. In a few years, everything is anyways transitioning to a touch system- (I can show reports). Microsoft is just taking advantage of the situation.

Plus have you seen the features on Win8?! They are fucking mind blowing. An OS that starts in 10ish seconds? Awesomeness. Yes, there are downsides to the pre-release thingy they had earlier but they are fixing those in the coming October release.

3. As for the people who say they are against the whole cloud and internet integration thing. Google has been doing it, why not Microsoft then? The integration helps them with their business ten folds.

For example, now you may see if you are logged into gmail and then open up youtube, you automatically get logged in- without even it asking for permission (which it used to earlier). Google has been syncing all of its services under one umbrella.

I once got some newsletter on my gmail, and had youtube on. As soon as I switched videos, the advertisements changed to something related to the newsletter content/genre. Google has always been integrating stuff.

So, why not Microsoft? Helps them run business better which in turn will benefit the user only.

With all the bad things I've heard about different OS's kinda glad I've stuck with Windows XP for a while. Though Windows 7 seems fine when I've used it on other peoples cpu.

^Is awesome.

But you wouldn't be worse off trying 7 either. It's pretty sleek and bug-free - which is actually rather surprising for a Windows OS.
