Why is the Attitude Era SUCH a big deal?

Obviously not to everyone (myself included), but for those who LOVE it so much, the simple question is why? I mean, it's not like the wrestling was better than it had been pre-Attidue and certainly not as good as it's been post. It's also arguable whether the peak of the product's popularity occurred during the Attitude Era or during the Hogan era in the 1980's, an era which was also PG. Being someone who's lived through all the "era's" in wrestling since Hogan first won the WWF Championship off the Iron Shiek in 1984, I just don't get the love for this particular era when it doesn't seem to me that anything was all that great in it.

In the same vein, do you Attitude Era lovers really think that the ratings or WWE's profits would go up if they dropped the PG and went back to it? I certainly don't, but I'd love to have someone argue exactly how that's going to happen if they somehow did revert back to the "good old days".

As someone who never watched the Attitude Era, I cannot really judge on how good it was but I do notice people saying how amazing it was. I suppose it might be the same in twenty years when people say how they miss the CM Punk days or whatever.

well profits would immediately go down as they'd lose all the great merch deals they got going on right now.

I guess the Attitude era is held so high because it was so different at the time. Yeah, you had ECW but that was an underground thing. The WWE version was large scale, in your face and completely changed a lot of peoples perception of what pro wrestling was.

While I did like some aspects of the attitude era I didn't enjoy it all. What I think made it so endearing to people is that it was in your face and unpredictable but as the Internet has gotten bigger and we can now find things out before they happen (Batista and Hogan returns for example or match ups at WM) that can spoil that excitement. I do think that they could lose some revenue due to going back to that style of booking and programming.

While I do find if they throw some of the elements back in it could help some though like a little blood in a cage match and just a little more edge on some of the guys could help some do I want to see naked Mideon again hell no. Do I want to see another Val Venus no I don't and I definitely don't want to see another hand birth.

While I think we could have another Stine Cold type of character again that could work as long as things are booked well and done in a somewhat appropriate manner things will be fine.

Let's keep in mind that the Attitude era spawned during the Monday Night Wars. WCW had the dominant product until the arrival of DX and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Those two entities alone turned the tide and created the Attitude era. At the time, WWE was trying to survive during the faction wars. The Nation of Domination, The Corporation, The Ministry, The Hart Foundation, and then of course, DX and Stone Cold erupt on the scene. Once they showed, the landscape changed, and created a more questionable environment.

It was widely accepted because while the content was not exactly adult in nature, then implications were a bit extreme, and the still age appropriate, save the part where Ms. Kitty flashed an arena during a PPV and Sable revealed a handprint bikini, among a few other blunders.

People probably liked the Attitude Era simply because of it's edginess, it was something more for the older generation who liked violence and entertainment.

I liked it just cause of how crazy it got at some points, you seen some off this off the wall stuff today but not like the way it was done back than, but some of it I even like. I guess it's more or less I like wild and crazy, but I like comedy also, I felt more entertained during that era than I do now. I seen some of the old stuff and even that was good to me, Pre-Attitude was good, and so was it during it and little bit after it. I don't feel it would get better with profits or storyline or anything along that line, I don't feel it would get worst on profits but storylines I'm not sure, they could try something and bomb it.
