Night and the City (1950). Harry Fabian is a con man who's working a new con. He stumbles upon a pro wrestling show and comes up with a plan: He's gonna get into the wrestling business! Another wrestler attends this show, which is promoted by Cristo, his father the Grecco Roman wrestler Gregorious and with his other son Nicholas storms out in disgust and wants to get back to Athens. Gregorious and his black sheep son Cristo get into an argument. Harry sees this father-son dispute and recruits Gregorious to his stable.

But Cristo runs a monopoly on the wrestling business in London and doesn't want competition. Harry retaliates by provoking Cristo's main draw The Strangler in a bar and tells him he couldn't beat Nicholas. Strangler accepts the challenge. Now, the match of the century is on: The Strangler versus Nicholas. Londoners are going to pay to see the match of a lifetime: Grecco Roman Wrestling vs. Pro Wrestling.

Night and the City touches upon London's seamy underworld where much illicit activity is un-policed. Harry Fabian, in order to get 200 quid to start his wrestling promotion, promises Silver Fox nightclub co-owner Helen that if she pays him 200 quid then he can get her a license to re-open the Flamingo Nightclub. Flamingo was a profitable business which had been closed by police several years ago. Instead, he pays master forger Googlin to forge a license for her so he can get her to fork over the dough. By the time she realizes she's been conned, it's too late.

The Prince and the Showgirl (1957) June 21, 1911. His Grand Duke of Highness (Laurence Olivier) is smitten with The Coconut Girl actress Elsie Marina (Marilyn Monroe) and invites her over to his embassy building in England for dinner. The Grand Duke has a low opinion of political democracy and disdains the citizens of Carpathia. His son Nicholas is the heir to the throne and allies with the Kaiser Party to overthrow his father.

It's a comedy but there wasn't anything in the movie which made me laugh and I have a feeling it wasn't funny during the mid 50's when it first came out. It felt tedious at two hours long.

It's listed as a drama/romance everywhere I see it.

Nighthawks (1981) Deke DaSilva (Sylvester Stallone) and his partner Matt (Billy Dee Williams) have been working undercover for the past nine years in the seedy streets of Manhattan, posing as decoys (i.e a hopeless old lady) to catch thieves and drug dealers.

That all changed January 1st in London when a revolutionary terrorist Wulgar blows up a Harding & Hobbs store with innocent people in it to strike a blow against British imperialism. Wulfgar is on the loose in the Big Apple so British intelligence agent Hartman (Nigel Davenport) has recruited New York cops to go undercover to catch Wulfgar before he strikes again. Wulfgar (Rutger Hauer) is desperate, as his comrades have cut him off from their organization for his extreme violent tactics. Can Deke catch this terrorist before he kills innocents again? Or will his conscience against killing civilians make him reluctant to pull the trigger when he sees Wulfgar in sight?

I couldn't help but notice DaSilva, with his unshaven beard, looks like the spitting image of Al Pacino's Serpico. That issue aside, this is one of Stallone's better movies.

Great White Hope (1970). Based on the story of Jack Johnson. Jack Jefferson (James Earl Jones) the African American Heavyweight Champion of the World is too good in the ring, handily beating the great Franklin Brady in Reno Stadium and this is with Franklin's colleague Captain Dan as the referee. Eleanor Bachmann is Jack''s white girlfriend and soon-to-be-wife. On top of beating every white contender in the rankings, it further infuriates White America that Jack has a white girlfriend and it infuriates his fellow black Americans, too. Jack was charged with violating the Mann Act, politically motivated, for driving his girlfriend across state lines so he fled the country to London.

If he wants to get back to America and not be charged with violating the law which carries three years in prison, Jefferson agrees to lose the title to Jess Willard in Havana, Cuba. There's some truth to the charge the fight was fixed. Jess didn't last long as champion as he was brutally KO'd by Jack Dempsey in his second title defense.

Godzilla King of the Monsters (2019)

godzilla-king-of-the-monsters-poster.jpg

After 5 years of waiting King of the Monsters has arrived & its
fucking incredible. Its basically "The Avengers" of Kaiju films.

The story & writing are solid, the acting is good across the board, the
score & cinematography are fantastic & the kaiju are simply God-like.

Rodan is a true flying fire fiend, Mothra is more benevolent than ever,
Ghidorah is FINALLY allowed to shine after years of being a stiff suit
or puppet & Godzilla...well...he's Godzilla. He's a legendary fictional
character for a reason & he gets plenty of screen time to show why
he has endured for 65 years & counting.

There were so many references for die hard kaiju fans like myself...
& even some REALLY interesting original kaiju showed up for a cameo
or two.

Its not perfect as there were a couple of "Michael Bay level" jokes that
were a bit cringe & there was the odd "corny" moment...but its a kaiju
film...what do you expect?

Please...all of you...go see this film. You won't regret it...you have my
word.

Also...be sure to stay to the very end of the credits...the very, VERY end.

9.5 out of 10

This was a life-affirming film for me.

Bring on Godzilla vs. Kong!

Love, Simon (2018) Simon Speier has the perfect teenage life. He has supportive parents, a mother who's a psychiatrist and a feminist, a father who had a successful college football career and is fairly popular in Creek High School. But he holds a secret: He's gay. One day, his close friend Lea stumbles upon the Creek High School blog of an anonymous user Blue who admits he's gay. Simon finally has a soul mate! Simon proceeds to e-mail Blue (Anonymously, of course) and tell him he's also gay. But Simon has no clue who this Mystery Man is.

Ugh...

It was okay? I guess? Maybe?

Goose & Nick Fury were cool...but everything else just felt...off.

Hearing that Australian accent coming out of Talos made
me laugh nearly every time...and not in a good way...& why
did we make the Skrulls into good guy refugees?

So much for planting the seeds for the Secret Invasion
I guess.

Ehh...

I won't be watching this one again...

I'll stick to the Porn Parodies Thank you very much.
