Actually, "ill" was used back in the 80's. Fucking the Beastie Boys have an album called "Licensed to Ill" that came out in '86.

Same as "Blue":

As it happens, "Ill" meant something a bit more specific back then...If you were " Illin' " then you were getting up in someone's face and acting a bit rowdy... It's since kinda been simplified to mean "badass" (like sick, rude or whatever).
