Could we get away with having a wrestler be gay without it being a "thing" now? Have we come far enough?

I feel like even Cena's gay jokes would just fall flat if the guy was openly gay, and the younger WWE fans would probably just accept it as part of who he is.

If WWE wanted to make a guy the biggest name and heel in the business, they would have a homosexual man come out with his boyfriend, without even mentioning anything is wrong with being gay or focus on the fact that he is gay, and have him be a complete dick to everyone. News websites everywhere would gobble this up, create huge press for the WWE. Any press is good press.

I feel I must reiterate. This top star, lets say they debut Fandango like this, would be in the main event scene, have a boyfriend, be a complete dick. He would cry foul over everything that went wrong for him because of prejudice to him and his boyfriend. Faces would time and time again tell him that they don't care who the hell he's dating, that it has nothing to do with it. People would love to hate this guy but he would be considered a huge deal because of his interesting persona. The buzz created around it would land everywhere, but they couldn't get in trouble because there would be no homophobic remarks, Jerry and Cole would constantly harp on the fact that they hate this guy not because of his sexuality but because he's a complete dick.

I have a feeling he'd be the top heel in the whole company and win multiple world titles just because of the buzz around the balls it took to do this.

Pat Patterson is gay and one of the most well respected men in the company. I think WWE will have an openly homosexual superstar soon. Statistically, some of the guys in the locker room are homosexuals - but that doesn't mean a superstar with a homosexual gimmick necessarily has to be gay in their personal life.

I think Damien Sandow is pretty close to being that, weird choice of tights and everything. (btw I thought Fandango was supposed to be some kind of dancer.)

I don't think WWE going with something that radical. I saw the Swagger and Zeb alliance and that in itself is probably going to cause some dubious segments with say, Alberto Del Rio or Antonio Cesaro, Khali etc. (i.e Non-white people who are not technically American.) This is just way out there.

Even if WWE went for it, would a heterosexual man in reality, accept the role of a homosexual WWE superstar, given how people make fun of the industry for multiple reasons as is.

To me this doesn't sound good at all. You can have the most random shit pop up on the WWE product but a homosexual character is a little bit over the edge if you ask me. I would hate the character even if it'd be presented by a good wrestler because that's just what I hate about some gay people in real life. I don't have anything against gay people that are happy the way the are but I hate those people that tell you they're gay and the first thing that they say even before you can react is "do you have a problem with it? Because if you do I don't care blah, blah, blah." Or those that say it a million times and are extremely proud of it. Today it's nothing to be ashamed of so there's no need to pretend it's 1942 and scream "gay rights! gay rights!" everywhere. And I feel that this character would be just like that, mentioning the fact he's gay every two minutes and stuff like that. Gay superstars out of the ring? No problem (Because that's how you know a man's smart even though he's gay. He's gay but he doesn't brag about it everywhere he goes). Superstar that is not gay but needs to "play" a gay character? FUCK NO.

I just think it's too risky for the WWE to attempt to try and do really. All it would take is just one slip of the tongue, one joke taken the wrong way or something and WWE would have all these organisations over their backs and the negativity surrounding it.

This guy seriously didn't help the cause at all.

Honestly, it wouldn't bother me and WWE has already treaded in these waters before with Goldust and it wasn't received in a very positive light either. I'm not sure how WWE could do this without it being scrutinized heavily by the wrestling community and further tarnishing the already questionable image of professional wrestling.

I don't think it's wrong for WWE to go there, but I really don't think we are quite there yet as a species to promote that sort of thing and not expect it to receive negative criticism from most fans. Even if we are talking about a subtle innuendo like a male manager that the male wrestler seems to have a sexual interest in despite the fact the wrestler and the manager aren't flaming homosexuals, I think it's still baiting a backlash in our modern society. I would love to live in a world where that's not the case, but unfortunately I don't think we're quite there yet.

I don't like the idea of that to be honest. If a wrestler is openly gay then that's absolutely fine by me, but to make an angle out of it? No way. WWE has been treading on a very fine line about homosexuality for years now. We've had Goldust, Rico, Billy & Chuck, and even some of Cena's more homophobic comments last year. To put it mildly, WWE has gotten it very wrong every time they brought it up.

As I said, an openly gay superstar would be fine, but making it into a storyline is just far too risky. Especially if it was a straight wrestler playing a gay wrestler.

Sexuality should never be the thing that gets a superstar over, lol.

I wouldn't mind an openly gay superstar, even acknowledged in kayfabe. As long as WWE aren't overly flamboyant with it or have other wrestlers bringing it up in promos all the time, or commonly use it as a point of comedy. You know, just a normal, gay guy. A wrestler that just happens to be gay but no one really rags on him for it (unless if they wanna do some "overcoming adversity" angle).

Like others have said though, its probably just too risky to "attempt". The appeal of pro-wrestling is kind of a masculine thing in the first place, the very premise of wrestling reminds me of this 13 year old boy fantasy land where literally the only thing that matters is being able to fight better than everyone else.

.

Despite the negativity, It was one of the most over characters in wrestling history. Goldust had so much heat, Big E Langston wishes he could time travel back to 1997 and steal some of it for today.

You guys are worried about a whole lot of nothing.

Did we forget the Necrophilia angle? LOD Hawk's "suicide" angle? Austin vs Pillman "house shooting" angle?

There's nothing too taboo for the WWE nowadays.

It'd be risky for WWE because if it wasn't an uber-face, then the gay and lesbian alliances would be all pissed complaining that gays are painted in a negative light. That didn't stop WWE with Billy and Chuck though, but it seems like they care more about others opinions now than then.

I think WWE could do it, sure. It's not a matter of being taboo. My problem with it is that wrestling characters by nature are reduced to a few dominant traits. Austin: tough redneck. Kane: angry demon child. Orton: unstable, pantsless. John Cena: hustle/loyalty/respect/etc. Wrestlers don't get a lot of time on screen and they have to get a character over. In that environment, I don't see how WWE would develop a gay character without hammering the shit out of it. If people have to keep saying "it doesn't matter that you're gay" or whatever, then why make that one of the few things we get to know about the character? I don't trust WWE to do this without insulting either the LGBT community or my intelligence.

But Goldust was a fucking terrific character, that needs to be said. He never said he was gay, but everyone assumed it. Then all of a sudden he has a super-hot female valet. That was well played.

Actually Jordan lives in Louisiana and runs Wildkat Wrestling where he also trains people. As far as a gay gimmick in wrestling if done right could be good. Plus you would be surprised by how many wrestlers are really gay.
