Could we get away with having a wrestler be gay without it being a "thing" now? Have we come far enough?
I feel like even Cena's gay jokes would just fall flat if the guy was openly gay, and the younger WWE fans would probably just accept it as part of who he is.
If WWE wanted to make a guy the biggest name and heel in the business, they would have a homosexual man come out with his boyfriend, without even mentioning anything is wrong with being gay or focus on the fact that he is gay, and have him be a complete dick to everyone. News websites everywhere would gobble this up, create huge press for the WWE. Any press is good press.
I feel I must reiterate. This top star, lets say they debut Fandango like this, would be in the main event scene, have a boyfriend, be a complete dick. He would cry foul over everything that went wrong for him because of prejudice to him and his boyfriend. Faces would time and time again tell him that they don't care who the hell he's dating, that it has nothing to do with it. People would love to hate this guy but he would be considered a huge deal because of his interesting persona. The buzz created around it would land everywhere, but they couldn't get in trouble because there would be no homophobic remarks, Jerry and Cole would constantly harp on the fact that they hate this guy not because of his sexuality but because he's a complete dick.
I have a feeling he'd be the top heel in the whole company and win multiple world titles just because of the buzz around the balls it took to do this.
Pat Patterson is gay and one of the most well respected men in the company. I think WWE will have an openly homosexual superstar soon. Statistically, some of the guys in the locker room are homosexuals - but that doesn't mean a superstar with a homosexual gimmick necessarily has to be gay in their personal life.
