This year marked the 60th birthday for the beloved Big Tex... the 52-foot cowboy at the renowned State Fair of Texas. Every autumn, hundreds of thousands of fair-goers from all over the southern US were greeted by the enormous talking cowboy who stood prominently in the center of the fair attractions and festivities. Since making his first appearance in 1952, Big Tex had become not only the icon of the State Fair of Texas, but was cherished in the hearts of many Texans whose first memories of the great fair were that of their first photo-ops with the big guy.
Tragically on October 19th, the beloved cowboy burned to the ground as a result of faulty electrical wiring. Thousands of people watched in horror as a staple of all their childhoods perished before their eyes in a massive blaze of destruction. After the fire consumed the giant icon, forklifts wheeled the fallen cowboy away in a massive body bag.
Because of the widespread popularity of Big Tex among Texas State Fair-goers, his demise has gained national coverage.
But that's only where this story begins to get weird.
Local station Fox 4 News has announced a memorial service to be held for Big Tex at the Golden Gate Funeral Home tonight. I'm not sure if they are actually burying the remains on-site, but if so that will be one pissed-off undertaker.
